Mohsin Naqvi calls for autonomous, modern Interior…

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the Ministry of Interior’s affiliated institutions to become more autonomous, empowered and capable of making decisions independently rather than referring every matter to the ministry. He made the remarks while chairing a meeting of heads of all subordinate departments and institutions of the Ministry of Interior. The meeting reviewed the performance of various institutions, ongoing reforms and measures to improve coordination and communication among them. Naqvi stressed that institutions should take timely decisions within their respective mandates. He also instructed officials to immediately propose necessary legal amendments and administrative reforms wherever existing laws or procedures create obstacles to effective functioning. The interior minister said the Ministry of Interior deals with matters that are different and more sensitive than those handled by many other ministries. He assured participants that the government would provide full support to newly established institutions, including the Land Port Authority, and ensure that all departments receive the resources they need. He called for stronger cooperation among the ministry’s institutions and directed their heads to adopt comprehensive measures to strengthen data protection and cybersecurity. He said modernising the institutions and bringing them in line with contemporary requirements remained a key priority. Naqvi also asked the heads of all affiliated institutions to submit comprehensive two-year transformation plans for their respective organisations. He said the government aims to transform every institution under the Ministry of Interior along modern lines and improve its overall efficiency. “The goal is to make every institution under the Ministry of Interior exemplary and public-friendly,” Naqvi said, stressing the need to set clear targets and ensure their timely achievement to provide citizens with better facilities and quality services. The minister also highlighted the performance of the ministry’s institutions during the Hajj operation, noting that the absence of any reported drug-smuggling case during the operation reflected improved performance and stronger enforcement measures. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry also addressed the meeting and said a culture of poor performance had previously existed in federal institutions. He said the government had taken steps to change that mindset and was now focusing on target-based, result-oriented and performance-driven work. Chaudhry stressed that all institutions must focus on measurable outcomes, improve efficiency and work collectively to deliver better services to the public.

British home secretary faces heavy criticism over attempt to deport grooming gang leader to Pakistan

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is facing sharp backlash over the government’s attempt to forcibly deport Shabbir Ahmed, a convicted child sex offender and leader of a grooming gang, to Pakistan. The controversy has sparked a diplomatic row between the United Kingdom and Pakistan, with the British government threatening sanctions against Pakistan if it refuses to accept Ahmed. Ahmed, who was convicted of child sexual exploitation in 2012, was recently released from prison. However, attempts to remove him face significant legal hurdles under the Immigration Act 1971. Under this legislation, Commonwealth citizens who moved to the UK before 1973 and have resided there for at least five years are protected from deportation. Having arrived in the UK during the late 1960s, Ahmed remains shielded by these statutory protections. Members of the British Pakistani community have expressed strong opposition to Mahmood’s approach, alleging that the Home Office is pushing the measure to appease far-right political factions

Bilawal vows to fight alleged poll rigging in AJK

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), without naming the party directly, of relying on electoral manipulation to gain power and warned that his party would resist any attempt to rig the upcoming elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Addressing a PPP workers’ convention in Muzaffarabad, Bilawal said the large turnout at the gathering showed that his party was heading towards victory in the August 2 elections. He urged party workers to remain active and mobilise voters, expressing confidence that the “arrow” — the PPP’s electoral symbol — would emerge victorious. Bilawal alleged that certain political groups had historically benefited from manipulated elections and now believed they could use the same tactics in AJK. He said the people of Kashmir would not allow such efforts to succeed and that PPP workers and voters would stand against any attempt to undermine the electoral process. Referring to his party’s political rivals, Bilawal claimed that their rise to power had often followed controversial election processes. He said the PPP had repeatedly faced electoral challenges but continued to win public support despite what he described as unfair political practices. The PPP chairman also raised allegations of rigging in the constituency of senior party leader Chaudhry Yasin. He claimed that polling agents and workers had reported irregularities at around 30 polling stations, alleging that the stations were occupied and votes were unlawfully cast. Bilawal said he had evidence regarding the alleged irregularities and called on the Election Commission to order immediate re-polling at the affected polling stations if it had no involvement in the alleged misconduct. He maintained that the PPP would accept defeat if voters rejected the party through a transparent and fair election. However, he said the party would not accept what he called a “stolen election” and would continue to challenge any result that emerged through alleged manipulation. Bilawal also pledged to fight for the restoration of what he described as the “stolen seats” of Kashmir and promised to pursue the rights of the people through democratic and constitutional means. He said the PPP wanted to secure ownership and political rights for the people of AJK through the power of the ballot rather than through armed struggle. He urged voters to support the party’s electoral campaign and vowed that the PPP would continue its efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at the international level. Bilawal said the Bhutto family and the PPP had worked for three generations to highlight the Kashmir cause globally, adding that his party would continue to advocate for the rights and aspirations of the people of the region through political and diplomatic channels.

Gold climbs back near 10-week peak, investors awai…

LONDON: Gold prices rose on Wednesday as investors reduced expectations of tighter US monetary policy and turned their attention to upcoming inflation data that could influence the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. Spot gold gained 0.6 per cent to $4,391.82 an ounce by 0535 GMT, while US gold futures for December delivery advanced 0.2pc to $4,451.90. The precious metal had reached a 10-week high a day earlier before encountering technical resistance around $4,387, near its 100-day moving average. It subsequently closed lower for the second time this month. Market analyst Kelvin Wong of Oanda said the recent strength in gold was largely driven by changing expectations about Federal Reserve policy. He noted that prices had also gained momentum after breaking above the $4,200 level late last week. Gold recorded its strongest weekly gain since January on Friday after weaker-than-expected US employment figures prompted traders to reduce their expectations of further interest-rate increases. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets are now assigning roughly a 50 per cent probability to a rate hike in September, down from about 60pc before the jobs report. Lower interest rates generally benefit gold because the metal does not generate interest, making it relatively more attractive when yields decline. Investors were awaiting the latest US Consumer Price Index figures later on Wednesday for further clues about the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee has meanwhile said inflation remains a greater concern for him than weakness in the labour market. Oil prices also extended their gains after the United States and Houthi forces reported separate attacks involving shipping on Tuesday. Meanwhile, hopes of an end to the Iran conflict appeared to weaken after Tehran indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless certain conditions were met.
