Allah Wale Foundation awards Rs3.338m scholarships to 34 students

Lahore: Reinforcing its commitment to promoting education and supporting talented students facing financial hardships, Allah Wale Foundation (AWF) has approved scholarships for deserving students of the University of Rasul, Mandi Bahauddin. As part of the selection process, scholarship interviews were conducted on 5 August 2026 at AWF’s Mega Kitchen on Raiwind Road, Lahore. Following a comprehensive assessment, all 34 shortlisted students were awarded scholarships.

The Scholarship Selection Committee comprised Dr. Khalid Manzoor Butt, Director of the Scholarships Program; Dr. Shazia Lone, Finance Secretary; Mr. Majid Mustafa; and Qazi Muhammad Ali, representative of the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC). The committee evaluated applicants on the basis of academic merit, financial need, and overall eligibility before making its recommendations.

Under the approved financial assistance package, Rs. 962,000 has been allocated for tuition fees, Rs. 120,000 for hostel charges, Rs. 864,000 for mess expenses, Rs. 180,000 for transportation, and Rs. 1,212,000 as monthly stipends. The total value of scholarships approved for the current semester amounts to Rs. 3,338,000.

Speaking on the occasion, AWF Chairman Shahid Lone commended the Scholarship Selection Committee for conducting a transparent and merit-based evaluation process. He emphasized that investing in education is, in essence, an investment in the nation’s future and the development of its human capital.

Dr. Khalid Manzoor Butt stated that the Foundation’s financial support would enable deserving students to continue their professional education without financial barriers while empowering them to become responsible, self-reliant, and productive members of society. He added that the success of a student extends far beyond individual achievement, creating opportunities for entire families and contributing to the development of a more educated, prosperous, and progressive society.

She maintained that the people of Azad Kashmir have a longstanding bond with the PPP and asserted that no other political party enjoys the same level of public support in the region. The PML-N has not publicly responded to Faruqui’s allegations. Meanwhile, results from the second phase of the AJK elections continue to emerge, with the PML-N maintaining a clear lead according to unofficial results.

Following the rescue, emergency medical personnel provided Waqas with first aid at the scene before assessing his condition.   • Senate seeks PM intervention over Khairpur Dates Research Centre

    Islamabad: A major agriculture research project aimed at improving Pakistan’s date production has faced a setback after the proposed Dates Research Centre in Khairpur was excluded from the Public Sector Development Programme 2026 and 2027, prompting the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research to demand immediate reconsideration of the decision. The committee expressed concern that a project designed to improve date farming, develop disease-resistant varieties, increase exports and support farmers was left out due to financial limitations. The matter was discussed during the 29th meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, chaired by Syed Hussain Tariq, MNA, at Parliament House Islamabad. Officials informed the committee that the joint project of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur for establishing the Dates Research Centre could not be included in the PSDP 2026 and 2027 because of limited financial resources. The Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives informed the committee that the Ministry of National Food Security and Research had prioritized only three new development schemes for inclusion in the national development programme, leaving several important projects outside the plan. The committee strongly disagreed with the decision and highlighted the importance of the dates sector for Pakistan’s agriculture and economy. Members noted that Pakistan is among the leading date producers, and a dedicated research centre could help farmers increase production, fight crop diseases, improve quality, develop new varieties and boost the country’s share in international markets. The committee directed the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to formally approach the Ministry of Planning and request a review of the decision. The committee also decided to seek a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss establishing the Dates Research Centre through cooperation between the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur. During the proposed meeting with the Prime Minister, the committee also plans to discuss other major agriculture challenges including wheat imports, setting a fair minimum support price for wheat, providing DAP fertilizer subsidies similar to regional countries and investigating reasons behind wheat shortages despite earlier reports of surplus stocks. The committee said agricultural development requires long term planning and research facilities to support farmers and improve food security. The meeting also reviewed concerns regarding artificial sweeteners and flavored drinks, especially their possible health effects on children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Officials informed the committee that earlier recommendations were made after findings from the National Institutes of Health highlighted possible health risks linked with excessive consumption of such products. The committee was informed that frequent consumption of artificial sweeteners and flavoured drinks may contribute to health problems, including an increased risk of diabetes and other serious diseases. The committee expressed dissatisfaction over delays in implementing earlier recommendations and directed the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority to urgently review existing regulations. PSQCA was directed to hold a meeting in Islamabad involving committee members, health officials, NIH representatives, mango growers and other stakeholders. The committee instructed that revised standards should include clear product labels, prevention of misleading claims, visible health warnings, proper expiry date information, suitable fruit pulp requirements and regulations for plastic bottle usage. The National Institutes of Health was also directed to provide scientific evidence regarding health impacts and international guidelines to help improve the regulatory framework.

    PSX drops over 1,000 points

    The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained under pressure on Thursday as the benchmark KSE-100 Index fell by more than 1,000 points during intraday trading, reflecting cautious investor sentiment amid rising geopolitical tensions and uncertainty in global financial markets. By late morning, the KSE-100 Index had dropped to around 174,994 points, losing over 1,049 points, or approximately 0.6%, from the previous session. Selling pressure was witnessed across several major sectors, including automobile assemblers, cement, fertiliser, oil and gas exploration, oil marketing companies, power generation and refineries. Heavyweight stocks also traded in negative territory, contributing to the market’s decline. The latest downturn follows a sharp fall in the previous trading session, when the benchmark index lost nearly 1,581 points. Analysts attributed the continued weakness to escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have fuelled concerns over global economic stability and pushed international oil prices higher. Global market uncertainty also weighed on investor confidence. Asian stock markets showed mixed performance as investors assessed the US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged. The central bank’s policy stance left markets uncertain about the future direction of interest rates, while rising US Treasury yields added to concerns. Meanwhile, international oil prices remained volatile. Brent crude slipped below $90 per barrel after surging sharply a day earlier as conflict in the Middle East intensified. Despite the heightened tensions, reports indicated that commercial shipping through the region continued. Regional equity markets also experienced fluctuations, with technology shares remaining under pressure following recent losses linked to concerns over heavy investment in artificial intelligence and slowing returns.

    Azad Kashmir enters final counting phase

    Polling has ended in the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. The vote-counting process has now begun. Polling was held in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli. These included LA-14 Bagh-1, LA-15 Bagh-2, LA-16 Bagh-3 and LA-17 Bagh-4 Haveli. The polling process started at 8am and continued until 5pm. Voters were allowed to cast their ballots throughout the scheduled polling hours. With polling now concluded, election officials have started counting the votes. The results will determine the outcome of the remaining constituencies in the third phase. The first two phases had already produced a lead for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. In the first phase, polling was held for 13 seats in the Mirpur Division. The PML-N won nine of these seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party secured four. The second phase covered nine seats in the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for refugees. The PML-N won 15 seats in the second phase, while the PPP secured six seats. The third phase is being closely watched as the counting process will complete the voting process across the remaining constituencies. Election authorities are expected to announce results after the completion of counting and the required verification process. The outcome of the third phase will also determine the final balance of seats and pave the way for the formation of the next government in Azad Kashmir.

    MQM-P groups resume talks after Bahadurabad clash

    Differences between two groups within the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have led to renewed contacts and negotiations between the rival factions, according to party sources. The dispute reportedly surfaced after a party meeting at the MQM-P headquarters in Bahadurabad, Karachi. Tensions escalated during the incident, with members of one group allegedly engaging in a physical confrontation with MPA Ijazul Haq, party leader Zakir, and their supporters. MQM-P leader Aminul Haq claimed that members of the opposing group also resorted to intense aerial firing during the confrontation. He said one party worker sustained injuries in the firing, while several others were hurt as a result of stone-pelting. Following the escalation, senior leaders from both sides have started communicating with each other in an effort to ease tensions and resolve their differences through dialogue. Party sources said the two groups are currently holding discussions and exploring ways to settle the dispute. The sources added that the two factions may hold a joint press conference within the next 48 hours. During the press conference, the leadership is expected to outline the party’s future course of action and announce decisions aimed at addressing the internal differences. The developments come as the party seeks to prevent further escalation and restore unity among its ranks following the clash at the Bahadurabad headquarters.
