Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the Ministry of Interior’s affiliated institutions to become more autonomous, empowered and capable of making decisions independently rather than referring every matter to the ministry.

He made the remarks while chairing a meeting of heads of all subordinate departments and institutions of the Ministry of Interior. The meeting reviewed the performance of various institutions, ongoing reforms and measures to improve coordination and communication among them.

Naqvi stressed that institutions should take timely decisions within their respective mandates. He also instructed officials to immediately propose necessary legal amendments and administrative reforms wherever existing laws or procedures create obstacles to effective functioning.

The interior minister said the Ministry of Interior deals with matters that are different and more sensitive than those handled by many other ministries. He assured participants that the government would provide full support to newly established institutions, including the Land Port Authority, and ensure that all departments receive the resources they need.

He called for stronger cooperation among the ministry’s institutions and directed their heads to adopt comprehensive measures to strengthen data protection and cybersecurity. He said modernising the institutions and bringing them in line with contemporary requirements remained a key priority.

Naqvi also asked the heads of all affiliated institutions to submit comprehensive two-year transformation plans for their respective organisations. He said the government aims to transform every institution under the Ministry of Interior along modern lines and improve its overall efficiency.

“The goal is to make every institution under the Ministry of Interior exemplary and public-friendly,” Naqvi said, stressing the need to set clear targets and ensure their timely achievement to provide citizens with better facilities and quality services.

The minister also highlighted the performance of the ministry’s institutions during the Hajj operation, noting that the absence of any reported drug-smuggling case during the operation reflected improved performance and stronger enforcement measures.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry also addressed the meeting and said a culture of poor performance had previously existed in federal institutions. He said the government had taken steps to change that mindset and was now focusing on target-based, result-oriented and performance-driven work.

Chaudhry stressed that all institutions must focus on measurable outcomes, improve efficiency and work collectively to deliver better services to the public.

    ISLAMABAD: The second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections faced fresh controversy on Sunday after the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) alleged delays, administrative shortcomings and electoral irregularities in several constituencies. Meanwhile, the AJK Election Commission postponed polling in one constituency due to severe weather conditions. Polling continued in 21 constituencies, including nine seats in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee constituencies across Pakistan. More than 1.2 million registered voters were eligible to cast their ballots under strict security arrangements. PPP AJK Election Cell In-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor claimed that polling was delayed in several constituencies because polling staff failed to reach polling stations before voting began. He said dozens of polling stations remained without election officials at the scheduled opening time, causing inconvenience to voters and delaying the electoral process. According to the PPP, similar problems were reported in multiple constituencies where polling staff arrived late, preventing voters from exercising their right to vote on time. The party urged the Election Commission and local administration to ensure immediate deployment of staff and restore normal polling. Separately, the AJK Election Commission announced that polling in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-I had been postponed after heavy rainfall and landslides blocked key roads, making it impossible for polling teams and election material to reach several polling stations. Election authorities said efforts were made to reopen the affected routes, but worsening weather conditions prevented polling from taking place. The Commission said a new polling date would be announced later and apologised to voters for the inconvenience. The PPP questioned the decision to postpone polling across the entire constituency. Party leaders argued that if only certain polling stations were affected by landslides, polling should have continued in the remaining accessible areas. They called on the Election Commission to release a detailed report explaining the reasons behind the postponement. The party also alleged delays in additional constituencies, claiming that polling staff had not reached several stations even hours after voting officially began. It maintained that the delays affected voter participation and raised concerns over the smooth conduct of the election. PPP leaders further alleged that blocked roads prevented hundreds of voters from reaching polling stations. The party demanded the immediate reopening of affected routes and called for measures to ensure that voters could cast their ballots without obstruction. In another complaint, the PPP claimed that some of its polling agents were prevented from performing their duties at polling stations despite fulfilling legal requirements. The party urged election authorities to intervene and ensure equal treatment of all contesting candidates and their representatives. The PPP also accused rival political workers of violating election rules in certain constituencies and alleged that government employees were participating in election activities in violation of the code of conduct. The party demanded an immediate investigation and legal action wherever irregularities were confirmed. Separately, PPP leader Nadeem Afzal Chan criticised the conduct of the elections, describing reported delays in ballot paper distribution and administrative issues as unacceptable. He said the party wanted the electoral process to remain transparent and credible and warned that unresolved issues could undermine public confidence.

    Islamabad district courts begin summer break

    The summer vacation in Islamabad’s district and sessions courts began on Saturday and will continue until August 31, according to the official schedule issued by the judicial authorities. The district judiciary announced that regular court proceedings will remain suspended during the vacation period. However, essential judicial work will continue through designated duty judges to ensure that urgent legal matters are addressed without delay. The Sessions Judges of both the East and West divisions issued separate duty rosters for the summer break. Under the schedule, one additional sessions judge and one judicial magistrate will remain on duty in each division throughout the vacation period. The duty judges will hear urgent cases requiring immediate judicial intervention. These include matters related to physical remand, judicial remand, bail applications and other emergency cases that cannot be postponed until the courts reopen after the holidays. The arrangement has been made to ensure that litigants continue to have access to the courts for urgent legal relief despite the suspension of regular proceedings. Judicial officials said the vacation roster has been prepared to maintain the smooth functioning of the district judiciary while allowing judges and court staff to observe the annual summer recess. The district and sessions courts are expected to resume their normal schedule after the summer vacation concludes on August 31. Until then, only cases of an urgent nature will be taken up by the designated duty judges in both the East and West judicial divisions of Islamabad.

During the operation, teams conducted raids at various shops, inspected suspicious products, and confiscated items whose sale near educational institutions has been prohibited under the law. The Punjab Counter Narcotics Force along with district administrative of multiple cities has also issued orders to seal shops found violating the relevant laws and regulations. Earlier, the Directors of the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force visited various educational institutions and met with the administrations of schools and religious seminaries. During the visits, the administrations were urged to closely monitor students activities within the institutions and immediately report any presence or sale of narcotics or intoxicating products in the vicinity of educational institutions to the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force helpline 1012. The Punjab Counter Narcotics Force also organized lectures and awareness seminars in Murree to educate students about the harmful effects of narcotics and intoxicating products. According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force, CNF is carrying out similar operations across the province to protect students from the menace of drugs. The spokesperson emphasized that discouraging the use of products that may gradually lead young people towards narcotics is essential for preventing drug abuse. Raising awareness about the harmful and devastating effects of narcotics is also a key component of an effective anti-narcotics strategy. The spokesperson said that parents and teachers have a fundamental role in protecting students from drugs. Parents at home and teachers at educational institutions can play a vital role in safeguarding students by keeping a close watch on their activities and identifying signs that may expose them to the risk of drug use. The spokesperson said that the Punjab Government is taking serious and comprehensive measures to eliminate drugs from the province. In line with the vision of the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force is continuing effective enforcement operations against narcotics across the province alongside public awareness initiatives. The Force has now launched similar operations across Punjab against the illegal sale of narcotics and intoxicating products in and around educational institutions and religious seminaries. The spokesperson reiterated that the mission of the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force is to make Punjab drug-free, and operations against drug peddlers and the illegal sale of intoxicating products will continue until this mission is achieved. Public cooperation and timely reporting are essential to the success of law-enforcement agencies. Citizens are urged to immediately report the illegal sale of narcotics, intoxicating medicines, and other such products to the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force helpline 1012.
