Shakib ready to return to Bangladesh if assured of security

DHAKA: Bangladesh cricket star and former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan has said he is prepared to return home from exile, face ongoing court proceedings and play a farewell series if the government guarantees his safety.

Shakib, 39, has been living in the United States since the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government following a deadly student-led uprising in August 2024.

The former Bangladesh captain remains politically linked to Hasina’s Awami League, having previously served as a lawmaker from the party. He is currently facing criminal cases in Bangladesh, including one related to the alleged killing of a protester and another involving anti-corruption authorities.

Speaking to Reuters from Sri Lanka, where he is playing franchise cricket, Shakib said he wanted to return and was willing to appear before the courts.

He said he would go back if the government formally assured him that adequate security would be provided.

Shakib maintained that he had not committed any wrongdoing and described the murder case against him as baseless. He said the case was filed on a day in August 2024 when he was playing a match in Toronto.

The cricketer also said he had previously attempted to return to Bangladesh. In late 2024, he boarded a flight after receiving assurances that he would be protected, but was reportedly instructed to turn back while the journey was underway.

He eventually landed in Dubai before returning to the United States.

Shakib said another planned return was blocked after he posted a birthday message for Hasina. He questioned why such a social media post should prevent him from entering his own country.

The former captain also rejected suggestions that he should distance himself from Hasina or the Awami League to facilitate his return.

Shakib recently appeared virtually at a press conference in Delhi alongside Hasina. Following the event, his vacant home in Bangladesh was reportedly attacked.

He defended his participation, saying his message was focused on peace and Bangladesh’s progress.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Shakib must face the legal process like any other accused person and surrender before Bangladeshi courts.

Meanwhile, Shakib said he still hopes to represent Bangladesh in a farewell series and possibly play at the 2027 ODI World Cup.

He acknowledged that retirement was approaching but said he remained physically fit and continued to enjoy playing cricket.

The cricketer also revealed that his bank accounts had been frozen for around 18 months during investigations. He said he had not seen his parents in Bangladesh for nearly two years.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said officials from the two countries held discussions in Tehran on Friday and Saturday. The talks focused on common principles and practical mechanisms for ensuring the safe movement of ships through the strategic waterway. Baqaei described the discussions as productive and said progress had been achieved. He added that technical and political consultations between the two countries would continue. Iran also said there had been no change in the existing maritime traffic situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway remains a key route for international energy and commercial shipments, making any prolonged disruption a major concern for global trade. At the same time, Iranian military officials claimed that Tehran had targeted US military facilities in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain during retaliatory operations. Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Akraminia said Iran had taken action after accusing Washington of violating previous commitments related to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian army spokesman General Abolfazl Shekarchi also claimed that the United States had failed to achieve its objectives against Iran. He described the situation as difficult for Washington and said the US was looking for a new strategy. Iranian officials further claimed that US military infrastructure in Iraq’s Erbil suffered extensive damage during the conflict. Tehran has warned that its military operations could resume if hostilities escalate again. The United States, meanwhile, says its naval blockade against Iran remains in effect. US Central Command said American forces had redirected several commercial vessels accused of attempting to breach the blockade. It also reported disabling two vessels and boarding others to verify compliance. One oil tanker was inspected in the Arabian Sea before continuing its journey, while another vessel was reportedly disabled in the Gulf of Oman after allegedly ignoring repeated warnings. The US actions have added to concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region. Kuwait has rejected reports that it participated in military operations against Iran. Kuwait’s ambassador to the United States said her country had not taken part in attacks against Tehran and had not allowed its territory, airspace or territorial waters to be used for offensive operations. Kuwait has also condemned attacks against shipping in the Red Sea. Its Foreign Ministry described such attacks as a threat to maritime security, international trade and freedom of navigation. Kuwait expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and backed measures taken by Riyadh to protect its security and interests. The latest Red Sea tensions followed the Houthis’ announcement of a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia subsequently launched strikes against Houthi-held areas, while the Houthis later claimed attacks on Saudi oil facilities. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has meanwhile warned countries supporting US military operations against Tehran. An IRGC spokesperson said countries cooperating with Washington could become targets and specifically referred to Britain and Gulf states. US President Donald Trump has also reportedly paused plans for further strikes against Iran after nearly two weeks of military action. Reports suggested concerns over the availability of US air defence supplies in the region were among the factors behind the decision. The reported pause could provide additional space for diplomatic efforts, although it remains unclear whether it represents a temporary break or a broader halt to US strikes. US forces are reportedly maintaining contingency plans should major military operations resume.

    Shaheen Afridi credits Champions Cup for World Cup preparations

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Islamabad on Wednesday. The meeting focused on Pakistan-Kuwait relations, regional developments and ways to expand cooperation between the two countries. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also attended the meeting. Federal ministers for defence, commerce, national food security, communications, maritime affairs and petroleum were present. Advisers to the prime minister also joined the discussions. Prime Minister Shehbaz conveyed his best wishes to Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled. He said Pakistan and Kuwait shared close and brotherly relations. The prime minister said the relationship was built on shared values, mutual trust and longstanding ties. He added that both countries had supported each other during difficult times. The regional situation was a major part of the discussion. Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Kuwait’s leadership and people. He strongly condemned attacks on Kuwait and other friendly Gulf countries during the ongoing regional conflict. He said Pakistan stood with its brotherly Gulf partners during the challenging situation. Shehbaz said Pakistan remained committed to promoting peace and stability in the region. He said Islamabad was playing the role of an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator in efforts to ease tensions. The prime minister stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.     CHAKWAL: Three minors were allegedly subjected to sexual abuse in separate incidents reported in Chakwal district, with police registering cases against the suspects and arresting three men, including a mosque imam, while two others were taken into custody after an alleged exchange of fire. The incidents, reported in the jurisdictions of Wanhar and Kallar Kahar police stations, have caused concern among residents and prompted calls for effective protection of children and swift action against those found responsible. In the first case, a 10-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a local mosque imam after other children attending Quran lessons had left the mosque, according to the complaint lodged by her father with Wanhar police. The complainant said his two daughters regularly went to a nearby mosque in Mohallah Bawa Khan Baig to learn Quranic recitation. On the day of the alleged incident, the imam allegedly sent the 5years younger sister home early and dismissed the other children after hearing their lessons. According to the complaint, the suspect then allegedly called the 10-year-old girl into a room and sexually assaulted her. The girl was allegedly threatened with a knife and warned that she would be killed if she disclosed the incident to anyone. Police registered a case against the imam and launched an investigation. The suspect was subsequently arrested in an injured condition during an operation in the Manara area, police said. According to police, a raid on Wasnal Road, Manara, to arrest the suspect when he allegedly attempted to flee after seeing the police party. Police said the suspect stumbled and fell while fleeing, causing a pistol allegedly concealed in his waistband to discharge. He sustained a gunshot wound and was arrested before being shifted to the Trauma Centre in Kallar Kahar for medical treatment. The suspect was identified as Maulvi Saqlain Hussain, son of Nazar Hussain, a resident of Manara. In a separate incident within the jurisdiction of Kallar Kahar police station, a 16-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man who was staying at a local mosque in Shamsabad, near Khai village. According to the complaint filed by the boy’s father, who is a prayer leader at the mosque, the suspect allegedly assaulted his son and later attempted to assault him again. The complainant said the boy had initially remained silent about the alleged earlier incident out of fear. However, when he went to serve food to the traveller staying at the mosque, a commotion was heard after some time. The mosque caretaker and the boy’s father allegedly reached the spot and saw the suspect attempting to assault the boy, prompting the suspect to flee, according to the complaint. The boy later informed his father about the alleged earlier incident as well. In the third incident, two men allegedly involved in the sexual assault of a Class 10 student were arrested in an injured condition following an alleged exchange of fire in Chak Nagri, an area falling within Wanhar police jurisdiction. According to police, the suspects and two unidentified accomplices had allegedly taken the student to a nearby forest several days earlier, subjected him to severe physical assault and sexually assaulted him. Police alleged that the suspects recorded the incident and subsequently used the video to blackmail and intimidate the student. A police team later raided the suspected hideout to arrest the accused, police said. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the police party along with their two unidentified accomplices. During the ensuing exchange of fire, the two wanted suspects sustained gunshot wounds, allegedly after being hit by firing from their own accomplices, according to police. The two unidentified men escaped under the cover of darkness and the forest terrain. The injured suspects were arrested and shifted to a medical facility for treatment. Police said further investigation and legal proceedings were under way. The three cases have highlighted concerns over the vulnerability of children to sexual violence and exploitation. Residents have called for prompt investigation of the allegations, protection of the victims and strict action against suspects if the charges are established in court. Police officials said investigations into all the cases were continuing and that further action would be taken in accordance with the law.

    Court awards Ahsan Iqbal Rs2.5m in defamation case

    An Islamabad District and Sessions Court has ruled in favour of Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal in a long-running defamation case against PTI leader Murad Saeed. The court ordered Murad Saeed to pay Rs2.5 million in damages for making allegations that were not proven during the proceedings. Additional Sessions Judge Hakim Khan announced the verdict after hearing the case. The court held that Murad Saeed’s statements had damaged Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation and public image. It directed the PTI leader to compensate the federal minister with Rs2.5 million. According to the judgment, Murad Saeed accused Ahsan Iqbal of being involved in corruption worth Rs70 billion. However, the court found that he failed to provide any evidence to support the allegations. The court ruled that the accusations of corruption, misuse of authority, and receiving illegal commissions were defamatory because they remained unsubstantiated. The judgment stated that Ahsan Iqbal had initially sought Rs10 billion in damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation. However, the court observed that the amount claimed was excessive in view of the evidence presented during the trial. It therefore awarded Rs2.5 million as reasonable compensation. The court further observed that Murad Saeed’s controversial statements had harmed Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation, dignity, and credibility. It said the allegations created a negative impression of the minister among the public and directly targeted his honesty, integrity, and professional standing. The judgment also noted that Murad Saeed neither appeared before the court during the proceedings nor submitted evidence to substantiate the corruption claims. The absence of supporting material, the court said, weakened his defence and left the allegations unproven. The case originated from statements made by Murad Saeed in 2019 regarding the Multan-Sukkur Motorway project. At the time, he alleged that Ahsan Iqbal had committed corruption in connection with the project. After reviewing the evidence and hearing the arguments, the court concluded that the accusations were not established and therefore amounted to defamation. The verdict marks the conclusion of the defamation proceedings, with the court reaffirming that public allegations of corruption must be backed by credible evidence.
