South Korea football association apologises over old referee scandal

South Korea’s football association has apologised over a controversial old scandal involving claims that foreign referees were provided inappropriate entertainment during visits to the country more than a decade ago.

The apology came after a media report revived allegations surrounding incidents that reportedly took place between 2011 and 2012, including during visits by referees involved in qualifying matches for major international tournaments.

According to the report, foreign match officials were allegedly provided inappropriate entertainment on several occasions. It cited a 2016 investigation by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which reportedly found that such entertainment had been arranged seven times between March 2011 and March 2012.

The allegations included visits to massage establishments where the costs of sexual services were reportedly covered. The claims have renewed questions over the standards and practices surrounding officials during that period.

The Korea Football Association expressed regret over the matter and apologised for the controversy. The governing body also stressed that such practices are no longer taking place and that corporate cards are not being used in a similar manner.

The resurfacing of the allegations comes at a difficult time for the association, which is already facing scrutiny over the appointment of former national team coach Hong Myung-bo.

South Korean police reportedly raided the association’s offices on Thursday as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hong’s appointment, which has attracted significant criticism.

The latest developments have therefore placed the football body under renewed pressure to address concerns over governance and transparency.

While the historical allegations date back more than a decade, the association’s apology has once again brought the episode into the spotlight, raising fresh questions about accountability within South Korean football.

Mustafa Zahid may return for ‘Awarapan 2’ remake track

Nearly two decades after Tera Mera Rishta became one of the biggest hits from Awarapan, original singer Mustafa Zahid may be returning for the sequel. The Pakistani vocalist appears set to reunite with the franchise’s makers. According to a Mid-day report, the 41-year-old is reportedly in talks with producers Mukesh Bhatt and Vishesh Bhatt. The discussions center around a remake for Awarapan 2. The development is notable given Bollywood’s long-standing stance on Pakistani artistes since the 2016 Uri attack. That boycott was reaffirmed more recently, following the 2025 Pahalgam attack. Despite that backdrop, talks are reportedly moving forward. If the deal goes through, the song would reportedly be recorded in Dubai rather than India. A source close to the matter told the publication that this could mark one of the rare recent instances of a Pakistani playback singer working on a mainstream Hindi film. However, the track itself will not feature in Awarapan 2 directly, as its inclusion could create certification complications for the film. To work around that, the makers are said to be considering releasing the song exclusively through social media promotions, bypassing theatrical use entirely. Meanwhile, the film’s own trailer dropped on August 6, marking the franchise’s return after 19 years. Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as Shivam Pandit, now portrayed as older and more emotionally scarred. Disha Patani joins the cast as Zara, while Shabana Azmi takes on the role of antagonist Nafisa. The soundtrack brings together composers Mithoon, Jeet Gannguli and Amaal Malik, among others, with tracks like Ve Junoon and Yeh Awarapan already released. The trailer also includes a recreated version of Tera Mera Rishta, now sung by Saaj Bhatt and Subodhh Sharma. Original lyricist Sayeed Qadri has returned to pen the updated version of the track. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 is set for a worldwide release on August 14. The film will clash at the box office with Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, setting up a high-profile release-date showdown.

Henderson completes Chelsea switch after Brentford exit

Chelsea have brought in England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, ending his short stint at Brentford and giving the veteran a fresh chapter at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool skipper, who was part of England’s squad at this year’s World Cup in North America, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Blues. Henderson said joining a club of Chelsea’s stature, working under a manager he rates highly, and playing alongside such a talented squad made the move impossible to turn down. He also pointed to the clear ambition shown by the club’s ownership as something that impressed him deeply. Looking ahead, he said his focus would simply be on working hard every day, on and off the pitch, to help his new teammates and push the team forward. Reports had already surfaced last week confirming that Henderson’s Brentford deal had been cancelled once Chelsea’s interest in the midfielder became apparent, setting the stage for a move between the two west London-adjacent rivals. The 36-year-old rose to prominence during his years at Liverpool, where he won both the Premier League and the Champions League. He departed Anfield in 2023 to join Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, before switching to Dutch giants Ajax only half a year later. His return to English football came last year through a two-year contract with Brentford. A veteran of 91 caps for England, Henderson featured in this year’s World Cup squad but played only sparingly, and later suffered a broken arm during the tournament. His move to Chelsea comes just two days after the club completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. It has been an active summer in the transfer market for the Blues, who already broke the British transfer record by paying £117 million ($157 million) for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, while also adding French defender Maxence Lacroix and Atalanta man Marco Palestra to their ranks. Chelsea’s previous campaign ended in disappointment, as they finished 10th in the Premier League table, narrowly behind Brentford, and missed out on European qualification altogether. Manager Xabi Alonso will now be eager to turn things around when his side begins the new season with an away trip to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.

Ronaldo wedding rumor sends fans to wrong Church

FUNCHAL: Hundreds of Cristiano Ronaldo fans reportedly gathered outside a historic cathedral in Portugal over the weekend, hoping to catch a glimpse of the football superstar on his wedding day — only to discover that they had arrived for someone else’s ceremony. Rumors circulating on social media and in media reports claimed that Ronaldo was set to marry his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez, on Saturday in Funchal, the capital of Portugal’s Madeira island. Although Ronaldo’s family reportedly denied the claims, the speculation was enough to send scores of excited fans and journalists to the city’s historic Sé Cathedral. Many waited outside for hours, holding mobile phones and cameras in anticipation of the arrival of the Al Nassr star and Rodriguez. But the expected celebrity wedding never happened. Instead, the cathedral was preparing to host the wedding of a local couple, Nicole and Fabio. Fabio had already arrived at the church, while Nicole faced an unexpected challenge: getting through the crowd that had gathered outside believing Ronaldo would soon appear. The unusual situation created confusion around the cathedral, with tourists, fans and members of the media filling the surrounding streets. The Sé Cathedral administration later addressed the incident on its official Facebook page, congratulating the newly married couple while explaining that the large number of journalists and tourists had caused considerable confusion. The church eventually had to be closed while the wedding ceremony took place. In another post, the cathedral described the scene outside as something it had never experienced before, noting that the bride had difficulty entering the church because of the crowd. The guests also appeared to find the situation amusing. One guest joked to local media that they suddenly felt like celebrities themselves. Another questioned how anyone could have believed Ronaldo would arrive for a wedding without significant security arrangements. Ronaldo himself appeared to see the funny side of the episode. The footballer reportedly reacted to an Instagram post about the confusion with laughing-with-tears emojis, giving fans a glimpse of his reaction without directly confirming or denying any future wedding plans. Ronaldo and Rodriguez have been together for years and became engaged last year. Reports have previously claimed that Ronaldo presented Rodriguez with an expensive engagement ring featuring a large diamond. Despite the latest frenzy in Madeira, the couple has not announced a wedding date. For now, fans hoping to witness Ronaldo walk down the aisle will have to wait — and perhaps check the guest list before heading to the church.

Indian court acquits ex-wrestling chief in harassment case

A court in New Delhi has acquitted former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a high-profile sexual harassment and stalking case filed by several women wrestlers, bringing an end to one of India’s most closely watched legal proceedings involving the sports community. Singh, 69, a former member of parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had faced allegations from a group of prominent female wrestlers who accused him of sexual harassment, inappropriate conduct and demanding sexual favours. He consistently denied all allegations throughout the investigation and trial. The case attracted nationwide attention in 2023 after leading Indian wrestlers, including world champion Vinesh Phogat and Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, launched weeks-long protests demanding Singh’s removal from the Wrestling Federation of India and legal action against him. The demonstrations sparked widespread debate over athlete safety, accountability and the treatment of women in Indian sports. According to Singh’s legal team, the court cleared him of all charges after finding inconsistencies in witness testimonies and contradictions in key aspects of the prosecution’s case. Following the verdict, his supporters celebrated outside the court by showering him with flower petals, bursting firecrackers and chanting slogans. Reacting to the ruling, Singh welcomed the decision and maintained that he had always been confident of his innocence. He described the judgment as a complete vindication of his position. Despite the acquittal, wrestler Vinesh Phogat said the legal battle was not over. She announced that the athletes would challenge the verdict before a higher court, insisting they would continue seeking justice. Phogat said it had taken immense courage for the wrestlers to file complaints against a politically influential figure and vowed to pursue the case through all available legal channels. The controversy first erupted in 2023 when protesting wrestlers accused authorities of delaying action despite their complaints. Images of athletes being detained while marching towards the Indian Parliament drew widespread attention and intensified public scrutiny of the case.
