Henderson completes Chelsea switch after Brentford exit

Chelsea have brought in England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, ending his short stint at Brentford and giving the veteran a fresh chapter at Stamford Bridge.

The former Liverpool skipper, who was part of England’s squad at this year’s World Cup in North America, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Blues.

Henderson said joining a club of Chelsea’s stature, working under a manager he rates highly, and playing alongside such a talented squad made the move impossible to turn down. He also pointed to the clear ambition shown by the club’s ownership as something that impressed him deeply. Looking ahead, he said his focus would simply be on working hard every day, on and off the pitch, to help his new teammates and push the team forward.

Reports had already surfaced last week confirming that Henderson’s Brentford deal had been cancelled once Chelsea’s interest in the midfielder became apparent, setting the stage for a move between the two west London-adjacent rivals.

The 36-year-old rose to prominence during his years at Liverpool, where he won both the Premier League and the Champions League. He departed Anfield in 2023 to join Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, before switching to Dutch giants Ajax only half a year later. His return to English football came last year through a two-year contract with Brentford.

A veteran of 91 caps for England, Henderson featured in this year’s World Cup squad but played only sparingly, and later suffered a broken arm during the tournament.

His move to Chelsea comes just two days after the club completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. It has been an active summer in the transfer market for the Blues, who already broke the British transfer record by paying £117 million ($157 million) for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, while also adding French defender Maxence Lacroix and Atalanta man Marco Palestra to their ranks.

Chelsea’s previous campaign ended in disappointment, as they finished 10th in the Premier League table, narrowly behind Brentford, and missed out on European qualification altogether. Manager Xabi Alonso will now be eager to turn things around when his side begins the new season with an away trip to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.

Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja among 10 killed …

British Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja has died along with nine other climbers in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, according to his expedition company. Elite Expeditions confirmed the death of the 43 year old climber on social media, saying the news came with profound sadness and heartbreak following Thursday’s avalanche. Purja, who was born in Nepal and later served in the British army, had earned global recognition for climbing the world’s 14 highest peaks in just over six months in 2019. Pakistani officials had earlier reported the recovery of the bodies of three other climbers from the same expedition, identified as American Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah also confirmed Purja’s death, saying the loss of six Nepali climbers and four foreign climbers, including world record holder Purja, in Pakistan’s Karakoram range had shocked the nation. Shah said the climbers’ courage and contributions would continue to inspire others. Naila Kiani, a spokesperson for the Alpine Club of Pakistan, which is coordinating rescue operations, told a British broadcaster that Purja had led numerous expeditions she had personally taken part in and described him as an extremely experienced and fearless climber with strong leadership skills. Kiani said the Alpine Club would only formally confirm his death once his body has been recovered, though she acknowledged rescuers fear all members of the group have died. She said search teams have spotted some bodies but have not yet been able to reach them. Rescue teams in Pakistan have been searching for the missing climbers on the world’s 12th highest peak following the avalanche, which struck the 8,047 meter summit in the Karakoram mountain range. Purja was leading the multinational climbing group at the time. Also known as Nims, Purja rose to international fame in 2019 after climbing all 14 of the world’s peaks above 8,000 meters in 189 days, breaking the previous record by more than seven years. His achievement later became the subject of a Netflix documentary titled 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. At the time of his historic climb, he described the effort as grueling but humbling, and said he hoped to show that determination, self belief and positivity could make anything possible. Purja served in the British military for 16 years, including a decade in the special forces, and received an MBE from the late Queen in 2018 in recognition of his extreme high altitude mountaineering achievements. He lived in Hampshire in southern England with his wife and three year old daughter, and was also known as the first Gurkha soldier to climb Everest while still serving in the British military. In his final social media post, shared on Monday, Purja wrote that he had not originally planned to climb Broad Peak. He said his trip had initially been focused solely on Gasherbrum II, another peak in the Karakoram range, but that he realized shortly before departing for Pakistan that summiting Broad Peak as well would leave him needing just one more mountain to become the first person in history to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters twice without supplemental oxygen. He described the added goal as something that emerged unexpectedly rather than as part of a plan, writing that opportunities tend to present themselves quietly to those already putting in the work. He added that he was asking Broad Peak for nothing more than safe passage up and back down, saying he never took any mountain for granted. Broad Peak is widely regarded as one of the more difficult peaks for climbers to summit. The mountain was first successfully climbed in 1957 by an Austrian expedition, and while many climbers have reached its summit since then, dozens have died attempting the ascent. One of its deadliest recorded years was 2013, when at least six climbers lost their lives on the mountain.

Forensic report confirms drug toxicity in Township…

Punjab Police Chief Abdul Kareem has said the deaths of two women at Lahore’s Township Police Station were caused by combined drug toxicity, ruling out physical violence or police torture as the cause of death. Addressing a press conference at the Central Police Office in Lahore, the Inspector General of Police said a detailed investigation had been conducted into the deaths. The Lahore CCPO and DIG Investigation also attended the briefing. According to the IG, the Medical Board found no signs of physical assault, external injuries or wounds on either woman. A separate magisterial inquiry conducted under Section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure also found no evidence of torture by police officials. The police reviewed complete CCTV footage related to the incident and recorded statements from police personnel and witnesses. The two women had been brought to Township Police Station following action on a 15 emergency call. A case under Sections 379 and 420 of the Pakistan Penal Code was subsequently registered after a written complaint was received. Police said both women had previously been involved in several alleged fraud and cheating cases registered in Lahore and Gujrat. CCTV footage also showed that their clothes appeared to have been torn before they were taken into police custody. The Medical Board had earlier observed several injection marks on the women’s arms. Samples were subsequently collected by the Punjab Forensic Science Authority for detailed examination. The final forensic report has now confirmed the presence of nine different types of drugs in samples obtained from both women. The Medical Board concluded that the combination of drugs caused toxicity, leading to cardiopulmonary arrest and death. IG Punjab Abdul Kareem said the police would continue to follow the law and ensure transparent accountability. He stressed that no individual would be treated as being above the law. The police chief also briefed the media on several other cases. He said significant progress had been made in the Hina Javed murder investigation in Rawalpindi, where three suspects were nominated and two had been arrested. Investigators, he said, established that an incident initially reported as suicide was actually a murder. Regarding the Abdullah Tahir murder case, the IG said police were working to arrest the suspected shooters. The suspects reportedly fled towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and efforts were underway to trace their whereabouts. On police reforms, Abdul Kareem said the Dolphin Force was being reorganised, with its command and control to be placed under local station house officers. The department is also considering modern electric motorcycles for the force, while new motorcycles have already been provided to Murree Police for improved patrolling. The IG further announced stronger measures against corruption within the police department. He said the Internal Accountability Branch was being strengthened and regional and district police officers had been directed to take strict action against officials involved in corrupt practices. Speaking about the Ghaziabad rape case, the IG said police had arrested the nominated suspect and secured relevant medical, forensic and CCTV evidence. Footage from the police station, Safe City cameras and other local cameras was collected, while statements from the victim, complainant, relatives and other relevant individuals were recorded. Police personnel found negligent in the case were suspended and departmental inquiries were initiated. The Punjab Institute of Mental Health also conducted assessments of the victim.
