Colombia’s new president takes office with hardline pledge on security and economy

Abelardo De La Espriella has been sworn in as Colombia’s president in Cali, breaking with the tradition of holding the inauguration ceremony at the congressional building in Bogotá.

The 48-year-old former lawyer and ally of US President Donald Trump won June’s runoff election on a platform focused on hardline security measures, significant cuts to state spending, and the expansion of national energy production.

During his inaugural speech at the Pichincha Battalion military base, De La Espriella declared that peace negotiations with armed groups are completely exhausted.

He stated that criminal syndicates must either submit to the rule of law or face a direct response from security forces. To combat drug trafficking, he announced plans to resume aerial spraying to eradicate coca crops and confirmed that Colombia will join the US-led Shield of the Americas programme.

On the economic front, De La Espriella pledged to freeze public spending and simplify the tax regime to stimulate private investment, while proposing to reduce the size of the state by up to 40%. He confirmed that established social programmes would remain intact.

To boost declining reserves, the new administration plans to expand oil and gas exploration, including the use of responsible fracking, alongside efforts to strengthen state-owned energy firm Ecopetrol.

De La Espriella’s inauguration reflects a wider political shift across Latin America. Incoming Finance Minister Miguel Gomez noted a fiscal deficit between 7% and 8% of GDP, indicating that initial governance will depend on executive decrees whilst navigating a divided congress.

Meanwhile, opposition figures led by Senator Ivan Cepeda organized peaceful demonstrations in Barranquilla, pledging to defend democratic institutions and monitor potential rollbacks of social protections.

The case was lodged by the state following an incident that took place a few days ago. According to police officials, a large group of transgender persons allegedly entered the police station in an agitated state and created unrest inside the premises. They are accused of pelting stones, damaging government property and disrupting official work. Police said the protesters allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked at the police station. Police are also reviewing available evidence, including surveillance footage, to identify everyone involved in the alleged vandalism and attacks on government property.

Recent photos and videos from the film’s production have quickly gone viral across social media platforms. While many fans admired his new hairstyle and youthful appearance, others began speculating that he may have undergone subtle cosmetic enhancements. The actor’s smoother facial features and refreshed look prompted online discussions, with some social media users suggesting that treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers could have contributed to the change. Others believed his appearance was simply the result of professional grooming, better lighting, makeup, or natural aging. Several fans also noticed that Fawad appears slimmer than before. His visible weight loss led to further speculation, with some users wondering whether it could be related to lifestyle changes or health management. Others even guessed that weight-loss medication might have played a role. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding these claims. Comments on social media reflected a wide range of opinions. Some users praised the actor for looking fresh and stylish, while others expressed surprise at how different he appeared. A few jokingly asked for the name of the cosmetic surgeon they believed had enhanced his appearance, while others insisted the transformation was likely due to his haircut and overall styling rather than cosmetic procedures. As a result, all claims circulating on social media remain unverified. For now, the actor remains focused on his upcoming projects, with fans eagerly awaiting his return to both television and cinema. South African court pauses impeachment proceedings against Cyril Ramaphosa

South Africa’s Western Cape High Court has granted President Cyril Ramaphosa a temporary order halting parliamentary impeachment proceedings against him. The interdict pauses the work of a parliamentary impeachment committee until the court reviews a November 2022 panel report in September, which concluded that Ramaphosa “may have committed” serious violations regarding the Phala Phala farm scandal. The controversy stems from a 2020 break-in at Ramaphosa’s luxury farmhouse in Limpopo, where $580,000 in undeclared foreign currency hidden inside a sofa was stolen. While a former spy chief alleged the stolen sum reached $4 million and accused the president of concealing the robbery from tax and police authorities, Ramaphosa has maintained his innocence, stating the cash came from a legitimate sale of 20 buffaloes. Although the ruling African National Congress (ANC) initially quashed impeachment efforts in Parliament in 2022 and prosecutors dropped criminal charges in 2024, a Constitutional Court ruling in May 2026 reinstated the impeachment process. Ramaphosa welcomed Friday’s court decision, affirming his respect for judicial independence while awaiting the full review hearing in September.
