Punjab authorities have stepped up action against Afghan nationals living in the province without valid documents.

The Foreign National Security Cell of the Punjab Home Department is carrying out checks across the province. Officials are identifying Afghan nationals who are staying without acceptable visas.

Those found to be residing illegally are being detained. They are then moved to designated holding centres before being repatriated to Afghanistan.

A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department said 2,689,295 Afghan nationals have so far been repatriated from Pakistan.

The spokesperson said 140,468 undocumented Afghan nationals have been sent back from Punjab alone.

Officials said the action is being carried out under the government’s existing policy. Under the policy, Afghan nationals without valid and acceptable visas are considered to be staying illegally in Pakistan.

The crackdown is not limited to one area. Officials are conducting checks in residential neighbourhoods and commercial markets across Punjab.

The authorities are also monitoring places where foreign nationals may be living or working. The purpose is to identify people who do not have the required legal documents.

The department said detained Afghan nationals are transferred to holding centres. These facilities are being used to manage the repatriation process.

There are currently 39 active holding centres across Punjab. According to the department, 188 Afghan nationals are currently staying in these centres.

The provincial authorities have also directed action against people who rent properties to undocumented foreign nationals. Cases can be registered against property owners found violating the relevant rules.

Officials said the enforcement drive will continue across the province. Authorities are maintaining checks in different areas as part of efforts to enforce immigration regulations.

India’s representative is expected to join the executive committee meeting through video link. The visiting officials are also scheduled to inspect sports facilities in Islamabad as part of their assessment of preparations. Lahore, however, is not included in the venue inspection itinerary. Pakistan intends to hold the Games primarily in Islamabad and Lahore. Lahore will serve as the Games Secretariat and is expected to host most of the competitions, while Faisalabad will also be involved as a host city, with handball scheduled to be played there. The upcoming edition will be Pakistan’s third time hosting the South Asian Games. The country previously staged the regional competition in Islamabad in 1989 and again in 2004. The biennial Games bring together athletes from across South Asia in a wide range of sporting disciplines.     Islamabad set to become medical tourism hub

    The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) is accelerating plans to establish Pakistan’s first luxury medical tourism model centre in Islamabad, with the aim of capturing a greater share of the rapidly growing global medical tourism market. Pakistan is seeking to benefit from the global medical tourism industry, estimated to be worth around $144 billion, while the country currently accounts for only about 0.5% of the market. The initiative gained momentum after plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr Muhammad Salman Khan approached the SIFC Secretariat seeking up to 25,000 square feet of land or a built-up facility for a five-star luxury medical centre with room for future expansion. In his proposal, Dr Khan said cosmetic surgery and dentistry together account for around 35% of global medical tourism activity. He argued that Pakistani specialists can provide international-standard services at significantly lower costs than those charged in countries such as Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom. The SIFC subsequently convened a high-level meeting at its secretariat on August 5. Representatives from the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Jinnah Medical Complex and medical professionals participated in the meeting. According to the meeting minutes, Dr Salman presented a phased plan for the project. The initiative would initially introduce premium “Med Suites” in Islamabad, followed by a dedicated medical tourism centre and eventually the development of a comprehensive Islamabad Medical City. Participants identified several advantages that could help Pakistan compete in the international medical tourism sector. These include significantly lower treatment costs, a large pool of qualified medical specialists and a sizeable overseas Pakistani community that could form an initial customer base for the proposed services. The meeting also highlighted the distinction between aesthetic tourism and broader medical tourism. Officials agreed that establishing a dedicated luxury aesthetic tourism centre in the federal capital could help create the foundation for a new high-value industry. The proposed facility could attract thousands of international patients to Pakistan and generate valuable foreign exchange for the country. Islamabad was considered a suitable location because of its relatively secure environment, scenic surroundings and high-quality residential infrastructure. The proposed model would combine specialised medical services with a five-star hospitality experience for patients and their accompanying family members. The meeting concluded with several directives to move the proposal forward. The CDA was asked to arrange a follow-up meeting within a week involving Dr Salman Khan, the CDA chairman and other relevant stakeholders to examine the proposal in detail. Medical experts were also directed to prepare a comprehensive investment, commercial and financial feasibility study for the proposed project at the Jinnah Medical Complex. Separately, the SIFC was asked to arrange meetings between leading medical specialists and representatives of major five-star hotels in Islamabad. The discussions will assess commercial interest and examine the practical feasibility of developing dedicated medical tourism facilities. The project has now entered an initial implementation phase, with several government institutions involved in evaluating the proposal.

    Pakistan marks Kashmir Exploitation Day

    Pakistan observed Kashmir Exploitation Day on August 5, with political leaders reaffirming their support for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir and describing India’s actions of August 5, 2019, as illegal and contrary to international law and United Nations resolutions. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan remains committed to supporting the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. In his message, he stated that India’s unilateral constitutional changes made on August 5, 2019, were unlawful and pledged Pakistan’s continued moral, political and diplomatic support for Kashmiris. He also urged India to reverse all measures that altered the disputed region’s constitutional status. The Foreign Office said Pakistan continues to observe Kashmir Exploitation Day to highlight the events of August 5, 2019. A spokesperson praised the courage, resilience and sacrifices of the people of Indian-administered Kashmir and reiterated Islamabad’s support for their cause. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to the families of those who lost their lives during the Kashmir conflict and urged the United Nations and international human rights organisations to take notice of alleged human rights violations in the region. She said Pakistan would never accept the constitutional changes introduced by India in 2019. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said India’s actions were against United Nations Security Council resolutions and called on the international community to play a greater role in protecting human rights in Kashmir. Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani condemned India’s August 5 measures, saying attempts to alter the region’s demographic composition and identity were unacceptable. In Peshawar, a solidarity rally led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi was held from the Civil Secretariat to the Governor House. Government employees and people from different walks of life participated in the event. Addressing the rally, Kundi said Pakistan would continue to stand with the people of Kashmir and support their aspirations. Sindh Home and Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar said the use of force and restrictions could not weaken the determination of the Kashmiri people. Sindh Assembly Speaker Owais Qadir Shah also urged the United Nations to play a more effective role in addressing the situation. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said the struggle of the Kashmiri people would continue until the dispute is resolved in accordance with United Nations resolutions. Senator Sherry Rehman praised the resilience and determination of Kashmiris, while Federal Minister Amir Muqam, speaking at a rally in Islamabad, reiterated Pakistan’s support for Kashmir and criticised India’s policies in the disputed territory. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari also condemned India’s 2019 constitutional changes, saying they had failed to suppress the Kashmiri people’s demand for self-determination and warning that such policies could undermine regional peace.
