Flood alert as rivers rise, Sukkur, Marala and Bal…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is bracing for another spell of flood-related risks as heavy monsoon rains, rising river levels and high water storage at major dams put several parts of the country on alert.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergencies Operation Centre, has warned of possible low to moderate flooding in vulnerable areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the latest assessment, the Indus River has already reached low flood levels at Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa and Guddu. While the Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, Kabul and Sutlej are currently within normal ranges, officials expect water flows in several major rivers to increase on August 8 and 9.

The NDMA has identified Sukkur on the Indus, Marala on the Chenab and Balloki on the Ravi as areas where low-level flooding could occur. The Jhelum downstream of Mangla Dam and the Kabul River near Adezai are also being closely monitored.

Several districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Shangla, Khyber, Orakzai, Kohat, Tank and North and South Waziristan, face the possibility of low to moderate flooding. In AJK, Bagh and Kotli are also considered vulnerable, while Zhob, Musakhel, Kohlu, Barkhan and Dera Bugti in Balochistan remain under watch.

Punjab is facing risks from hill torrents, particularly in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur. The NDMA has also warned of possible urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Okara and Lahore.

Water storage at the country’s major reservoirs remains high. Tarbela Dam’s water level has reached 1,548 feet, with storage at 97.94 per cent, compared with 95.98 per cent during the same period last year. Mangla Dam is at 1,205.2 feet, with storage recorded at 62.99 per cent, slightly above last year’s 62.80 per cent.

Authorities have urged residents, tourists and travellers in mountainous and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, as intense monsoon rainfall can trigger flash floods, landslides and debris flows with little warning.

People have been advised to avoid riverbanks, streams and other vulnerable locations and to check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling as the monsoon system continues to affect the country.

Guterres to make historic Syria visit after 17 years

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Syria on Saturday. It will be the first visit by a serving UN secretary-general to the country since 2009. The visit comes at a major turning point for Syria. The country is trying to rebuild after years of war, political instability and international isolation. Syria’s conflict began in 2011. It continued for almost 14 years. The war killed hundreds of thousands of people. Millions more were forced to leave their homes. The conflict ended with the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. Syrian opposition forces removed Assad from power after a rapid offensive. The country is now being led through a transitional period under President Ahmed al-Sharaa. His administration is seeking to establish a new political system and restore Syria’s relations with the international community. Guterres is expected to meet Sharaa during his visit to Damascus. He will also hold talks with Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. The UN secretary-general is also expected to meet other Syrian officials. He will hold discussions with representatives of civil society as part of his visit. The United Nations says Guterres will focus on Syria’s future. He is expected to underline the importance of creating a stable, inclusive and prosperous country. The visit is also expected to highlight the need for national reconciliation. Syria faces major challenges after years of destruction and displacement. The country’s transition has not been without difficulties. Sectarian violence remains a serious concern. Large numbers of Alawites were killed in violence in Syria’s coastal region last year. The Alawite community was closely associated with the former Assad government. Violence later affected the Druze community in southern Syria. Hundreds of people were reportedly killed during clashes. Guterres has expressed concern over both episodes of violence. He has called for accountability and protection for Syria’s minority communities. The new Syrian government is also working to restore diplomatic relations. Damascus wants to move beyond the alliances that dominated the country during Assad’s rule. Syria had long relied heavily on Russia and Iran. The new leadership is now seeking broader international engagement. Sharaa has already taken steps towards rebuilding Syria’s global diplomatic presence. Last year, he became the first Syrian president since 1967 to attend the UN General Assembly in New York. Washington has also taken steps towards improving relations with Damascus. The United States has removed most of its broad sanctions on Syria. US President Donald Trump has also indicated that Washington intends to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Guterres is expected to address Syria’s new parliament on Monday. The speech could focus on the country’s political transition and its future relationship with the international community. He will also visit a UN peacekeeping force operating near the Israeli-Syrian frontier. The force has maintained a buffer zone between Israeli and Syrian forces for decades. The situation in southern Syria remains sensitive. Israeli forces have occupied additional areas in the region since Assad’s removal. The Syrian government has demanded the withdrawal of Israeli troops. Damascus has also called for a return to the 1974 disengagement agreement. Guterres’ visit therefore carries significant diplomatic importance. It comes as Syria attempts to rebuild its institutions, economy and international relationships. For the United Nations, the visit also provides an opportunity to engage directly with Syria’s new leadership.

‘Tamasha’ returns for season five, promises bigger drama

Adnan Siddiqui has officially confirmed the return of Tamasha, announcing that its fifth season premieres today. He shared the news alongside photos with the show’s former winners, building instant buzz among fans. The actor posted images with past champions of the reality series to mark the occasion. In his caption, he promised the drama would be bigger and the arguments meaner than in previous seasons. Siddiqui kept his message short but effective, simply telling fans to expect the unexpected. The line was enough to stir fresh anticipation among the show’s loyal viewer base. Tamasha follows a group of celebrity contestants living together inside a house, completely cut off from the outside world. Throughout the season, they face daily tasks, public evictions and constant conflict among housemates. Siddiqui has now overseen four previous seasons of the show, each producing a new winner. Past champions include Umer Aalam, Aruba Mirza, Malik Aqeel and Saif Ali Khan, all of whom remain closely associated with the franchise. Just last week, a short teaser gave fans their first real look at the upcoming season. It showed new contestants covering their faces as they made their way toward the house, keeping their identities hidden for now. Several former winners also jumped in to share their own posts, adding to the reunion excitement. Season two winner Aruba Mirza wrote that every season creates new stories, but some victories become memories that last forever. Season four champion Saif Ali Khan shared his own photos from around the newly revamped mansion. He captioned the post by hinting at a bigger house and even bigger dreams this time around. Last season’s finale had already generated massive hype, with viewers hooked on the drama and viral clips flooding social media. Alongside that popularity, though, the show also faced criticism over incidents of alleged sexist behaviour inside the house. Those controversies, paired with the friendships and rivalries unfolding on screen, kept audiences deeply invested throughout the run. With a new batch of contestants, a redesigned house, and Siddiqui himself promising even bigger drama, season five looks primed to dominate conversations all over again.

Israeli strikes persist in Lebanon, white phosphor…

Israeli forces have continued carrying out strikes in southern Lebanon despite an existing ceasefire, with Arab media reports alleging that white phosphorus was used in the mountainous area of Ali al-Tahir. The latest reported attacks come a day after an Israeli strike killed 11 people, including seven members of the same family, according to local and foreign media reports. The continued bombardment has intensified concerns over the fragile ceasefire and the humanitarian situation in southern Lebanon. Iran has strongly condemned the Israeli military action, describing the ongoing attacks as aggression against Lebanon. Tensions escalated earlier this year after Hezbollah launched an attack on Israel, two days after the United States and Israel began military action against Iran. Israel subsequently expanded its operations in Lebanon and took control of parts of the country’s southern region. Israeli authorities have said their forces will remain in the area to prevent further attacks against communities in northern Israel. Foreign news reports say that at least 4,300 people have been killed in Lebanon since March 2 amid the continuing escalation.
