Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow: Discovering China through Life at Yanshan University

By Areeba Younis

The first rays of sunlight spread across the campus of Yanshan University as students quietly begin another day. Some walk purposefully toward classrooms with books in hand, while others pause beneath tree-lined pathways to enjoy the calm before lectures begin. In the distance, the modern skyline of Qinhuangdao reflects the morning light, while the quiet rhythm of campus life unfolds with remarkable order. For an international student, these seemingly ordinary moments reveal something extraordinary: a place where centuries of cultural heritage and the ambitions of a modern nation exist in harmony.

When I first arrived in China from Pakistan, I expected to encounter advanced technology, modern cities, and world-class universities. Those expectations were quickly fulfilled. What I did not anticipate was how naturally tradition and innovation would coexist in everyday life. At Yanshan University, I discovered that China’s progress is not defined by replacing its past but by building upon it. Every day offers new evidence that preserving cultural identity and embracing innovation are not opposing goals—they are complementary forces shaping the country’s future.

Walking across campus, I often see students reading beneath ancient-style pavilions before entering laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology. Traditional Chinese architecture blends seamlessly with modern academic buildings, creating an environment that respects history while encouraging discovery. This balance extends beyond the university itself. Whether observing cultural festivals enthusiastically celebrated by both Chinese and international students or attending lectures on artificial intelligence, engineering, and sustainable development, I have witnessed how the values of the past continue to guide the innovations of tomorrow.

The experience extends beyond the classroom. Nearby streets reflect the same remarkable balance. Local restaurants continue to prepare recipes passed down through generations, while customers pay using digital platforms within seconds. Morning markets preserve customs that have connected communities for decades, yet efficient transportation systems, smart city infrastructure, and digital services demonstrate how technological advancement has become part of everyday life. Rather than replacing tradition, innovation appears to strengthen it by making daily life more connected, accessible, and efficient.

Yanshan University itself represents this philosophy. Its reputation for excellence in engineering and scientific research reflects China’s commitment to technological advancement, yet the university also places great importance on cultural exchange, community, and mutual respect. As international students, we are encouraged not only to pursue academic success but also to understand Chinese culture through festivals, volunteer activities, language learning, and interactions with local communities. These experiences transform education into something far greater than earning a degree—they become lessons in understanding different perspectives and appreciating shared human values.

Living in Qinhuangdao has further deepened this understanding. The city’s coastal beauty, green parks, and historic landmarks exist alongside expanding infrastructure, modern industries, and sustainable urban development. The coexistence of natural landscapes and economic progress reflects a broader vision of development that values both environmental stewardship and long-term prosperity. As someone studying economics and business, I find this balance particularly meaningful because it demonstrates that development can be measured not only by growth but also by the quality of life it creates.

Perhaps the greatest lesson I have learned is that China’s future is being built without losing sight of its cultural foundations. Respect for education, family, community, and tradition continues to shape daily life even as technology transforms industries and society. This combination has challenged many of my previous assumptions about modernization. Rather than viewing tradition and innovation as competing forces, I have come to see them as partners in creating resilient and sustainable progress.

As the evening lights illuminate the campus and students gather to discuss assignments, share meals, or simply enjoy a walk with friends, Yanshan University becomes more than a place of higher learning. It becomes a meeting point where cultures, ideas, and aspirations come together. Every conversation, every shared experience, and every lesson contributes to a broader understanding that education is not confined to classrooms—it is found in the relationships we build and the perspectives we gain.

For me, studying at Yanshan University has been more than an academic journey. It has been an opportunity to witness how a nation can confidently embrace the future while honoring its past. In an increasingly interconnected world, this balance offers an important lesson: true progress is achieved not by abandoning tradition, but by allowing it to inspire innovation. Here, where tradition meets tomorrow, I have found not only a university but also a deeper appreciation of China’s enduring spirit and its vision for the future.

  • Important of Diplomacy in Modern Conflicts

By Dhani Bux Wassan Peace cannot be kept by force it can be achieved by understanding (Albert Einstein). In an increasingly interconnected world, disputes and tensions among nations have become more complex, involving geopolitical rivalries, ethnic and religious conflicts, ideological differences, civil unrest, and cyber warfare. These challenges threaten global peace and stability, and destroy the hustle and bustle of cities, turning them into ashes. These assaults lead to violence against innocent people . Amidst humanitarian crises and violence, diplomacy plays a crucial role in maintaining global peace, stability, and mutual prosperity among nations. Diplomacy is the most effective way to mediate disputes among nations through negotiations and table talks, preventing major conflicts and saving thousands of innocent lives. It is a manifestation of wisdom and dialogue. Modern conflicts are far more violent and complex than traditional wars. They arise from the struggle for power, competition over resources, territorial disputes, political instability, nationalism, separatism, and economic inequality. These conflicts have transformed cities into ruins, leaving streets littered with debris and countless lives lost. Millions of people have been displaced, deprived of education, healthcare, and shelter, and forced to live in extreme poverty. They have also left mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children waiting in vain for their loved ones who never returned from the battlefield. Now, let us turn our attention to the Israel–Palestine war. Since October 7, 2023, the conflict has continued for more than 1,000 days. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 73,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, while millions have been displaced and face severe humanitarian conditions. Similarly, the Russia–Ukraine war has continued for more than 1,600 days. The conflict has destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, and vital infrastructure, forcing millions to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries. History reminds us that when regional conflicts escalate into world wars, the world loses its path to peace. The First and Second World Wars claimed millions of lives and devastated entire nations. If diplomacy fails and violence prevails, humanity risks repeating the tragedies of the past. Therefore, dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful negotiation remain the only sustainable path. As modern conflicts continue to grow the importance of diplomacy cannot be overstated. Diplomacy provides nations with a peaceful means of resolving disputes through dialogue and compromise rather than violence. It prevents misunderstandings from escalating into armed conflicts and helps build trust and cooperation among nations. Strong diplomatic relations create a stable environment that encourages economic growth, attracts foreign investment, expands trade, and creates employment opportunities. Moreover, diplomacy facilitates humanitarian assistance, strengthens regional cooperation, and promotes lasting peace. In an increasingly interconnected world, it remains the most effective instrument for achieving peace, stability, and shared prosperity. History demonstrate that diplomacy repeatedly succeeded where military cops failed .The Camp David Accords (1978) ended decades of hostility between Egypt and Israel, proving that persistent dialogue can transform long-standing enemies into peace partners. Similarly, the Good Friday Agreement (1998) brought an end to years of violence in Northern Ireland through negotiation and political compromise. The Dayton Peace Agreement (1995) ended the devastating Bosnian War, while the Indus Waters Treaty (1960) between Pakistan and India has endured despite multiple wars, demonstrating that diplomatic agreements can survive even during periods of intense political tension. These examples illustrate that meaningful dialogue, mutual respect, and sustained negotiations often achieve what military force cannot. As former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan wisely observed, “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together.” In modern world conflicts strengthening diplomacy is essential for building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future. Governments should prioritize dialogue over confrontation, invest in skilled diplomacy, and promote mutual trust through regular communication. International organizations, regional alliances, and civil society also have an important role in facilitating peaceful negotiations and resolving disputes before they escalate into violence. At the same time, nations must uphold international law, respect sovereignty, and work together to address shared challenges such as climate change, terrorism and cyber threats. By embracing cooperation instead of conflict, diplomacy can prevent wars, protect human lives, and lay the foundation for lasting global peace and sustainable development. To conclude, diplomacy remains the cornerstone of peace and stability in an increasingly turbulent world. While modern conflicts have become more complex due to geopolitical rivalries, technological advancements, and transnational threats, dialogue and cooperation continue to offer the most effective path to lasting solutions. Military force may end battles, but only diplomacy can build enduring peace, restore trust, and promote mutual understanding among nations. As global challenges continue to transcend borders, the international community must strengthen diplomatic institutions, uphold international law, and foster a culture of cooperation. A peaceful and prosperous future depends not on the power of weapons, but on the wisdom of dialogue and the commitment to resolve differences through diplomacy. • Healthy weight may protect male fertility study

Male infertility is becoming a growing health concern around the world and new research suggests that excess body fat may be one of the reasons behind the rising number of cases. A study from Aarhus University found that higher levels of body fat can negatively affect male reproductive health and reduce fertility. The researchers followed 1,058 young men, who were about 18 years and 9 months old when the study began. They measured body fat body weight and muscle mass to understand how body composition affects fertility. According to the researchers a healthy body fat percentage for men is generally between 8% and 19%, while 20% or higher is considered elevated. The study found that men with higher body fat had on average a 23% lower sperm count than those with healthier body fat levels. The researchers also found that excess body fat may disrupt hormones that play an important role in sperm production and overall reproductive health. Hormonal changes caused by obesity can reduce both sperm  quality and fertility. Experts say maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise a balanced diet enough sleep and stress management can support both overall health and reproductive health. Avoiding smoking limiting alcohol and managing long term medical conditions may also help improve fertility. The findings were published in the journal Human Reproduction. The study supports earlier findings from the World Health Organization, which reported in 2023 that about 17.5% of adults worldwide experience infertility at some point in their lives. The WHO also noted that infertility affects people in high middle and low income countries making it a global public health challenge. Researchers say that while infertility can have many causes keeping body fat at a healthy level may be an important step in protecting male fertility and improving reproductive health.

“The Ark” in an era of ecological reckoning

In summer 2026, the power plant “Batcave” opened a group exhibition The Ark curated by renowned painter Eric Fischl alongside Powerhouse Arts President Eric Shiner. Bringing together roughly 90 animal sculptures by a multigenerational line-up of international artists. The exhibition uses the ancient narrative of the Great Flood as a mirror for modern ecological and cultural turmoil. The concept behind The Ark draws directly from the myth of the Deluge, an archetypal narrative found across diverse world traditions where catastrophic waters sweep away the old world to test human stewardship and resilience. Yet rather than adopting a purely apocalyptic or alarmist tone, the exhibition framing focuses on empathy, kinship, and survival. Co-curator Eric Fischl notes that animal sculpture offers a unique vehicle for exploring profound existential truths. Animal sculpture also captures raw instinct and sublime wonder through physical form. By placing non-human creatures at the center of the narrative, the exhibition encourages viewers to rethink their place within the broader web of life.  From Historic Whaling Port to Post-Industrial Sanctuary The journey of The Ark mirrors its thematic concern with changing environments. An earlier, smaller iteration of the show debuted at The Church in Sag Harbor, Long Island. A historic coastal town deeply tied to the 19th-century whaling industry. In that seaside context, the sculptures called to mind maritime history and marine life under threat. When relocated and expanded for Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn, the narrative shifted dramatically toward urban ecology and environmental remediation. Displaying ninety animal figures inside a rehabilitated power plant adjacent to heavily polluted urban waters creates a poignant visual tension. The physical site itself acts as a metaphor: an industrial relic turned creative sanctuary, witnessing the slow process of ecological recovery alongside the artistic preservation of animal life. Masterpieces of Instinct and Form The roster of participating artists spans decades and stylistic movements, uniting legendary figures of contemporary art with bold emerging voices. Pioneering Figures: Works by artists such as Maurizio Cattelan, Kiki Smith, Bruce Nauman, Sarah Lucas, and Jim Dine showcase how animals have long served as psychological stand-ins for human vulnerability, angst, and desire. Expanded Roster for Brooklyn: Newly added works by artists including Wangechi Mutu, Cannupa Hanska Luger, François-Xavier Lalanne, Nohemí Pérez, and Nari Ward introduce critical perspectives on Indigenous land sovereignty, post-colonial environments, and urban material reuse. Craft and Material Labor: Because Powerhouse Arts functions primarily as a fabrication facility, the exhibition doubles as a tribute to artistic craftsmanship. Visitors encounter bronze beasts, woven totems, carved wood, and reassembled found materials, celebrating the tactile labor behind each creation.   By encouraging close physical encounters with these sculpted beasts, The Ark bridges the gap between artistic tradition and ecological activism. It asks visitors to consider what merits saving when tides rise. It is suggesting that compassion for vulnerable creatures may well be our most essential anchor in turbulent times.

  • 5 Footwear types that may cause pain

When choosing shoes or slippers most people focus on style comfort and appearance. But footwear can also affect your health. Wearing the wrong type of footwear for long periods may put extra pressure on your feet, knees hips and lower back. Experts say there is no single type of footwear that is perfect for everyone. Your foot shape flat feet, walking style and how long you wear the shoes can all make a difference. Here are five common types of footwear that may cause problems for some people. Flip-Flops Flip-flops are common around the house and are often used in bathrooms because they are light and easy to wear. However most flip-flops provide very little support. They usually do not give the arch of the foot enough support especially for people with flat feet. Wearing them for long periods may affect the way you walk and put extra stress on your legs and knees. They are better suited for short-term use rather than long walks or standing for hours. Pointed shoes and flats Pointed shoes and flat shoes can look stylish especially with formal or office outfits. But some have a narrow front that leaves little room for your toes. Regularly wearing tight pointed shoes can squeeze the toes and cause discomfort. Over time they may also affect the natural position of the toes. Choose shoes that give your toes enough room to move comfortably. Crocs Crocs are popular because they are soft lightweight, and comfortable. Many people wear them at home while shopping or during daily activities. However very soft footwear may not provide enough stability for everyone. If your feet do not get proper support while walking, your walking pattern may change and place extra stress on your legs and knees. When choosing Crocs or similar footwear look beyond softness. Check the fit, sole and overall support.  Kolhapuri Sandals Kolhapuri sandals are traditional and look great with many outfits. However their flat soles often provide limited arch  support. People with flat feet may find this type of footwear less comfortable especially when worn for long periods. Poor support can affect foot alignment and may increase pressure on the knees and other parts of the lower body. This does not mean Kolhapuri sandals are harmful for everyone. The key is to consider your foot shape and comfort before wearing them for long periods. High heels and some boots High heels are popular for their stylish look but wearing them for several hours every day can cause problems for some people. High heels shift more body weight toward the front of the foot. Your body also changes its position to maintain balance which can put extra stress on the lower back and hips. Pointed high heels can also put more pressure on the toes and the front of the foot.  They may be better saved for special occasions rather than daily wear. How to choose better footwear Good footwear should be more than just attractive. When buying shoes or slippers Make sure •Your feet feel comfortable inside them •Your toes have enough room to move •The sole provides enough support •The footwear fits properly You can walk naturally without pain If you regularly experience foot knee hip, or back pain after wearing certain footwear consider changing it. If the pain continues or becomes worse speak with a qualified healthcare professional. The bottom line Fashion is important but comfort and foot health should come first. Choose footwear that matches your foot shape provides proper support and does not put unnecessary pressure on your feet or joints.
