He said that the desire for greater profits could ultimately lead AI tools to replace human employees. However, Hinton acknowledged that AI technology would also create new employment opportunities. Nevertheless, he believes the number of new jobs may not be sufficient to replace all the jobs that could be lost. He also admitted that it is extremely difficult to predict the long-term effects of AI technology. Hinton has previously issued warnings about the risks associated with AI. At one point, he estimated that there was a 10% to 20% chance that AI could eventually contribute to the destruction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential dangers of AI. Hinton acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding AI can be troubling because no one knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like in the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it. Earlier, in an August 2025 podcast appearance, Hinton said that AI is learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand and that there may be no reliable way to simply switch it off. Hinton’s research helped lay the foundations of machine learning, the technology that enables computers to replicate aspects of human intelligence. However, in recent years, he has been campaigning for AI to be developed and used safely. In 2023, Hinton left his position at Google saying that bad actors could potentially use the technology to harm other people. In a recent interview, when asked about the pace of AI development, he said that most experts in the field currently believe that eventually possibly within the next 20 years, humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans. He described this as a frightening prospect, comparing current AI technology to a three-year-old child, while noting that children grow up very quickly. According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He explained that the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the need for humans to develop greater physical strength because people began relying on increasingly powerful machines. He believes humanity is now doing something similar with human intelligence potentially creating technology that could surpass human intellectual capabilities. When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said that it would largely depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology. In his view, AI could have remarkable benefits in the medical field and could improve the efficiency of almost every industry. However, he stressed that society needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of AI technology.

These are sourced globally from North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. While everyday apparel from heavy winter coats to designer sneakers remains a staple, the modern Mayo Landa experience goes far beyond clothing. Collectors regularly scour the market for genuine heavy-leather jackets, vintage denim, and retro sports gear that would cost hundreds of dollars internationally. Stalls feature everything from Japanese porcelain and European glassware to high-end kitchenware and functional electronics. Antique items are hidden within subtle corner stalls and old storerooms. Victorian brass lamps, mid-century mechanical clocks, classic cameras, old vinyl records, and hand-carved wooden artifacts. Prices are mostly negotiated through traditional haggling.   • Organic eggs may have higher environmental impact

    A new study by researchers at the University of Oxford suggests that producing organic and free range eggs may have a greater impact on the environment than eggs produced by hens kept in conventional cage systems. According to the research if all egg production switched to organic and free range farming carbon emissions could increase by about 60%. The amount of land needed for egg production would also nearly double. The researchers estimated that producing only organic and free range eggs would release around 2.316 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases. In comparison producing eggs only from caged hens would generate about 1.184 million tonnes. The study explains that while organic and free range systems are often considered better for animal welfare they require more hens to produce the same number of eggs.  This is because hens kept in cage systems generally lay eggs more efficiently. Researchers also warned that organic and free range farming may require more land and could have a greater impact on water pollution. The study’s lead author, Dr. Harriet Bartlett said that future decisions about egg production should carefully balance three important factors animal welfare environmental impact and the need to produce enough food.

    A US bookstore staff was left surprised when a package arrived containing a book that had been stolen from the store nearly 40 years ago. The package also included an apology letter and $100 in cash as compensation. The package was recently delivered to Bookleggers, a bookstore in Old Town Eureka, California. When the staff opened it, they found a copy of The Unstrung Harp. The letter explained that the sender had stolen the book from the store about four decades ago.  He said he was a student at the time and was struggling with alcohol addiction and financial problems. He also wrote that he found the book recently while cleaning out his garage. After discovering that the bookstore was still operating he decided to return the book and apologize for what he had done. The man included $100 with the book and told the store owners they could contact him if they wanted to take any further action. Bookstore owner Jennifer McPhaiden said she and her staff were deeply touched by the letter. She said it was surprising to see someone return after so many years to admit their mistake and try to make things right.

He should possess an uncolonized space where external obligations, public opinions, and societal expectations are strictly forbidden. In this interior, he argued, we establish our true independence and safeguard our core identity. Montaigne was writing long before the advent of smartphones, social media feeds, and workplace notifications. However, his reflections speak directly to a growing contemporary dilemma. The erosion of personal mental autonomy. This 16th-century insight continues to captivate modern psychologists. It reveals how carving out deliberate quietude remains our strongest defense against emotional exhaustion. To appreciate Montaigne’s metaphor, it helps to envision a medieval or Renaissance shopkeeper. In the front of the store, the merchant greets customers, negotiates prices, manages displays, and puts on a professional performance upto public expectations. However, behind the commercial counter sits a private back room. A space away from the gaze of buyers, where the owner can rest, reflect, and exist simply. Montaigne argued that human life operates on a similar dual structure. We all inhabit public identities. We are employees, parents, partners, citizens, and friends. In these roles, we must navigate duties, relationships, and social etiquette. However, Montaigne warned against allowing these outward roles to swallow our entire psychological existence. Our self-worth and peace of mind mustn’t rely exclusively on external validation. We must leave ourselves utterly vulnerable when those external structures vanish. The back room of the mind isn’t a place to hide misdeeds or abandon loved ones. Rather, it is a deliberate mental reserve. It is the part of your consciousness that remains unrented. It’s where you can question assumptions, process emotions, and figure out what you genuinely believe before the rest of the world tells you how to think. Psychologists today pose distinction between two experiences that are often conflated. Loneliness is an involuntary, painful state caused by an unwanted deficit in social connection. It acts as an emotional alarm signal that our fundamental human need for belonging is unmet. In contrast, solitude is a voluntary, chosen pause from social interaction. Recent psychological studies affirm what Montaigne intuitively understood. When individuals intentionally step back from social eengagements in reflective solitude, they experience lower levels of stress, improved emotional regulation, and creative problem-solving. Crucially, the key variable that determines whether time alone feels refreshing or painful is personal agency. Chosen solitude restores energy, whereas forced isolation breeds distress. Montaigne’s philosophical framework complements these findings by emphasizing that true solitude is a mental habit rather than a physical location. You do not need to retreat to a secluded mountain or cut ties with society to experience it. You can sit in a crowded coffee shop or a busy subway train and still inhabit your internal back room. One condition provided that you retain control over your own thoughts and judgment. In the modern digital landscape, preserving an uncolonized back room has become significantly more difficult. Technology companies design algorithms specifically to capture and monetize human attention. Our devices invite us to check messages from the moment we wake up. Afterwards, we respond to emails, view news updates, and seek social validation in the form of likes and comments. Many people have turned their entire interior life into a public display. Every preference is shared. The thought is broadcast. The free moment is filled with external input. When every gap in our day is filled with podcasts, streams, or scrolling feeds, the boundary protecting our inner retreat disintegrates. We become perpetually accessible to everyone else while remaining complete strangers to ourselves. Most people cannot afford to abandon their careers or family obligations to go live in isolation. So, a mental back room in the 21st century requires intentional daily boundaries. The room does not need to be built with physical walls. It can be constructed out of time and habits. A daily twenty-minute walk without wearing headphones or listening to audiobooks allows thoughts to drift, settle, and organize naturally. The delaying act of checking social media notifications for the first thirty minutes after waking up ensures that your mind starts the day with its own thoughts. Also, keeping personal journal where thoughts are written purely for self-clarification reclaims the joy of private thought. Ultimately, Montaigne’s classic essay reminds us that reserving a private space in the mind is not an act of selfishness or social withdrawal. On the contrary, an inner sanctuary ensures that we return to our families, workplaces, and communities. We bring a grounded, clear-headed, and genuine self to the table. We ensure that while we may give our time to the world, we never give away the key to our mind.
