Jiang Zemin at 100: A Visionary Reformer and a Friend Pakistan Remembers

 August 17, 2026 marked the 100th birth anniversary of Jiang Zemin, one of the most consequential leaders of modern China. A grand commemorative gathering at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, presided over by President Xi Jinping, reflected the enduring importance of Jiang’s political and economic legacy.

Jiang Zemin’s life was remarkable because he was, at his core, an engineer who later became a statesman. Born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, on August 17, 1926, he studied electrical engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and graduated in 1947. His technical training shaped a practical approach to leadership: understand the problem, assess the available resources and build a solution capable of lasting.

His rise coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in modern history. After serving as mayor of Shanghai and later as secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Jiang played an important role in the city’s reform and modernization. He supported the transformation of Pudong into a major international and modern urban district, helping establish the foundations for Shanghai’s emergence as a global economic center.

When Jiang assumed China’s top leadership in 1989, the international environment was changing rapidly. The political transformation of Eastern Europe, the collapse of the Soviet Union and major domestic challenges created enormous uncertainty. Yet China maintained political stability and continued its programme of reform and opening up.

One of the defining features of the Jiang era was the consolidation of the socialist market economy, following the strategic direction established by Deng Xiaoping and formally advanced after Deng’s southern tour in 1992. Jiang helped translate this vision into institutional and economic transformation. The result was a period in which China accelerated market-oriented reforms, expanded its engagement with the global economy and strengthened the foundations for the extraordinary growth that followed.

China’s accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001 was among the most significant milestones of this period. It opened a new chapter in China’s integration with international trade and investment and contributed to the rapid expansion of Chinese exports and global economic engagement. Jiang’s leadership was also associated with deeper regional cooperation, including the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in 2001.

For Pakistan, however, Jiang Zemin was more than a distant Chinese leader. His connection with Pakistan began long before he entered China’s highest office. In 1976, as a professional engineer and leader of a Chinese technical delegation, he spent time at Taxila and was involved in important technical and administrative decisions connected with the commissioning of the Foundry and Forge Works of the Heavy Mechanical Complex. This cooperation formed part of China’s broader contribution to Pakistan’s industrial and engineering capacity.

The story of Jiang and Taxila carries special significance. It represents a relationship built not only through diplomatic statements but also through factories, machines, engineers and skilled workers. The Heavy Mechanical Complex became an important symbol of Pakistan-China industrial cooperation, and Jiang’s personal association with it gave Pakistan a unique connection with a man who would later lead the world’s most populous country.

During his state visit to Pakistan in 1996, Jiang reportedly maintained contact with former Pakistani colleagues from his earlier days at Taxila, demonstrating that he had not forgotten the professional relationships and human connections formed decades earlier.

It would therefore be fair to describe Jiang Zemin as a leader who helped strengthen the modern foundations of China-Pakistan friendship. He was not the founder of the relationship, whose roots go back to earlier generations of leaders, but he was a major bridge-builder who gave that friendship a distinctive personal and industrial dimension.

At 100, Jiang Zemin’s legacy remains substantial. He was bold during uncertainty, pragmatic during transition and confident in China’s capacity to reform without abandoning its strategic direction. He understood Deng Xiaoping’s vision and helped carry the reform and opening-up process into a new era.

For China, Jiang will be remembered as a major reform-era leader. For Pakistan, he will also be remembered as an engineer who once worked at Taxila, a statesman who valued friendship, and a leader whose life connected the development journeys of two nations. His legacy is not confined to history; it remains visible in the enduring strength of China-Pakistan cooperation.

  • Forgotten memories may not be gone

    New research suggests that some memories that seem to be forgotten may not completely disappear from the brain.  Instead they may remain stored in a quiet state and can sometimes return when a person receives the right reminder or is placed in a familiar environment. Scientists studied fruit flies and found that memories could become active again when the flies were placed in an environment similar to the one where the memory was first formed. This suggests that some memories may not be erased with time. They may simply become harder for the brain to access. Human memory is a very complex system. Some memories become weaker over time while others may suddenly return after seeing a familiar place, smelling a certain scent or noticing another related signal. However researchers still do not fully understand why the brain sometimes creates false memories along with real ones.  Understanding how the brain brings back true memories and creates inaccurate ones remains an important question for scientists. The findings could  help researchers better understand how memories are stored in the brain and how different surroundings or reminders can help bring forgotten memories back.

  • Vaping may be as harmful as smoking

    Smoking is well known to cause lung cancer heart disease and breathing problems.  However many people believe that vaping is a safer alternative. New scientific research suggests this belief may be misleading. Studies show that using e-cigarettes can also harm the body and may cause damage similar to that seen in cigarette smokers. Experts say switching from cigarettes to vaping should not be considered completely safe. Although e-cigarettes do not contain traditional tobacco they still expose the body to harmful substances. Research published in 2026 by the University of New South Wales along with findings from scientists at the University of Southern California found that vaping can damage the DNA in cells of the mouth and lungs. DNA is the body’s genetic blueprint. It controls how cells grow and function. When DNA is damaged the risk of serious diseases including cancer can increase. Researchers also found that sweet and fruit flavored vape products may contribute to DNA damage. People who use pod based vaping devices showed even higher levels of cell damage in the study. According to the scientists vaping may increase the risk of cancers of the mouth and lungs.  The research also found that DNA damage in people who vape was almost as severe as the damage seen in cigarette smokers. Although vaping and smoking work differently both can seriously affect health. Health experts advise people not to think of vaping as a harmless option. Every vaping session may damage important cells in the body. They recommend avoiding vaping altogether and raising awareness about its possible health risks.

    Kashmir’s nightingale Habba Khatoon

    Habba Khatoon stands as Kashmir’s Nightingale and Zoon: the Moon of Kashmir. Living in the 16th century, she transformed personal grief, marital heartbreak, and political exile into the foundational canon of Kashmiri romantic poetry. She was born to a peasant family in Chandhara village (Pampore), famous for its saffron fields. Unlike most rural girls of her era, her father sent her to a local maktab where she learned Persian and Arabic, nurturing her early literary talent. She got married to a peasant named Aziz Rathar. Unappreciative of her poetic disposition and intelligence, her husband and mother-in-law ill-treated her. She began singing her inner pain while working in the saffron fields and fetching water. Legend holds that while hunting near Pampore, Prince (later Sultan) Yousuf Shah Chak heard her singing under a plane tree. He arranged her divorce and married her as he was mesmerized by her voice and beauty. This marriage elevated her to Queen of Kashmir as Habba Khatoon. Emperor Akbar summoned Sultan Yousuf Shah to Delhi under the pretense of talks, arrested him, and exiled him to Bihar. Kashmir fell to Mughal rule, breaking Habba Khatoon’s world. She shed her courtly garments, donned the robes of an ascetic, and wandered the valley singing lamentations for her lost king. In short, she refused royal comfort. She spent her final years near Gurez and Athwajan, where her tomb rests today. Before Habba Khatoon, Kashmiri verse was dominated by devotional mysticism: Vaakhs and Shrukhs. She revolutionized Koshur literature by introducing the Lol. Lol is a short, melic lyric of intense personal feeling, love, longing, and domestic intimacy. It’s particularly designed to be sung rather than recited. One of her most iconic pieces, sung to this day across the valley: Mey haa karchey kitt kitaye, Mey kar tayiaar lole-vun… Chey kyaah gazi chaani roopeye, Volo haa maalyene dhoopeye! I have prepared myself in every way, I have composed my heart into a song of longing… What does it cost your beauty to look upon me? Come, my love, let us gather wild mountain herbs together! In the following verses, she uses Kashmir’s fleeting spring as an allegory for human beauty and time: Gulaan goy rang, pholan goy bahar, Mey valai poshan hyund hahaar… Yuthus chhumyene chaani dhaar, Volo maayi chaane pyarey! The flowers have faded, spring has taken its leave, My youth is wilting like a blossom in the heat… My eyes remain fixed on the path where you disappeared Come back, my beloved, for the sake of love!   After emperor Akbar exiled her husband to Bihar, she wrote this verse that captures geopolitical heartbreak reduced to raw human loss: Cchey saazey vaaye, bo saazey vaaye, Kati chhak chey, bo kati chhas… Diluk zaar vanay kith-kith bo, Jeel-e-Jhelum geyi aaba-haar! You play your tune far away, while I play mine in solitude, Where are you trapped, and where am I left to wander? How shall I tell you the agony of my heart? Even the waters of the Jhelum weep and overflow their banks for us. Her poetry is more than a story of personal transformation. It is the emotional arc of Kashmir itself. By introducing the Lol, she pulled Kashmiri verse down from abstract, detached mysticism into the intimate, beating heart of human experience. She gave language to the quiet endurance of ordinary women, the agony of sudden separation, and the unyielding beauty of a homeland caught in the tides of history.  

  • MIT robot can fly and swim

    Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a unique robot that can both fly through the air and swim underwater just like diving birds. The lightweight robot costs around $300 and was designed by MIT’s AeroAquatic Robotics team.  Scientists believe it could one day help monitor oceans study marine life and support environmental protection. The robot was inspired by diving birds which use the same wings to fly in the air and move through water.  While scientists have studied these birds for years building a robot that can perform both tasks efficiently has been a major challenge. To solve this the MIT team carefully studied how diving birds move and used those findings to design the new machine. The robot called the Flapping Aerial Aquatic Vehicle weighs only 250 grams.  It runs on a battery powered motor and has nylon wings and a tail coated with water resistant nanoparticles to protect them from moisture. According to the researchers the robot is programmed to flap its wings at a specific frequency allowing it to move smoothly in both air and water without changing its basic movement. It can fly at speeds of up to 13.4 miles per hour and swim at about 2.2 miles per hour. On a single battery charge it is designed to fly as far as 6 kilometers or swim up to 2 kilometers. The robot was tested for about one year first in a water tank in Massachusetts and later in Lake Geneva Switzerland where researchers evaluated its performance in real world conditions.

  • The Triangle of Trust and Tension: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India

    By Engr. Saqlain Abid Geography is destiny. A nation cannot choose its neighbours, but it can choose how to live with them. The strongest defence in any democracy is not perpetual conflict but sustained diplomacy, confidence-building measures, and peaceful negotiations. Pakistan and Afghanistan are two countries bound by centuries of shared history, religion, culture, and ethnic ties. Yet, what was once described as a brotherly relationship has gradually transformed into one defined by mistrust, accusations, and strategic competition. Today, India has emerged as the third player in this evolving regional triangle.   What exactly went wrong? How did decades of goodwill give way to blame games and border tensions? And why is India now finding greater strategic space in Afghanistan? These questions have become even more relevant following Amnesty International’s allegations regarding Pakistan’s reported airstrikes on the Omeed Rehabilitation Centre near Kabul on 14 March. The organisation questioned Pakistan’s justification for the operation, while Islamabad firmly rejected the allegations and maintained that its forces targeted legitimate security threats. The competing narratives deserve careful examination.   The first perspective is that of Afghanistan. Following the withdrawal of US forces in 2021, Pakistan welcomed the Taliban’s return to power. General Faiz Hameed, then ISI chief, was closely associated with the Doha process, while the government of Imran Khan projected Pakistan as a key mediator in Afghanistan’s political transition. Relations initially appeared warmer than they had been for years.   However, the atmosphere soon changed. One of the major turning points was the case of Sharifullah, an alleged ISIS-K commander. Pakistan argued that his arrest strengthened its claims regarding cross-border terrorism and militant networks operating from Afghan territory. The Taliban leadership rejected these accusations, insisting that Afghanistan should not be blamed for Pakistan’s internal security challenges.   Instead of responding through military escalation, Kabul gradually diversified its diplomatic and economic partnerships. Trade with India expanded while commerce with Pakistan declined. Afghanistan increasingly relied on Iran’s Chabahar Port and the India-built Zaranj–Delaram Highway to reduce dependence on Pakistani transit routes. Although these alternatives are longer and more expensive, Kabul appears willing to pay that price in pursuit of greater strategic autonomy. For the Taliban government, sovereignty has become closely linked with economic independence.   The controversy surrounding the reported strike on the Omeed Rehabilitation Centre further widened the trust deficit. Human rights organisations questioned Pakistan’s account of the operation, while Islamabad maintained that the target was linked to militant activity and defended its actions as part of its counterterrorism campaign. The differing claims remain disputed and continue to shape international perceptions.   Pakistan’s narrative is considerably different. Islamabad maintains that the resurgence of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacks represents one of its greatest national security challenges. Successive governments have argued that militant groups continue to exploit Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan. From Islamabad’s perspective, stronger military action became unavoidable because diplomatic engagement failed to produce sufficient cooperation.   The arrest of Sharifullah also carried broader geopolitical significance. Pakistan’s intelligence cooperation with the United States strengthened Islamabad’s engagement with Washington. At the same time, the government accelerated the repatriation of undocumented Afghan migrants, arguing that national security required stricter border management. Critics viewed these measures as increasing pressure on the Taliban government, while Pakistan defended them as sovereign decisions taken in the national interest.   Perhaps the greatest strategic miscalculation, however, was underestimating how quickly a trusted partner could seek new alliances. History shows that when friends become rivals, they often understand each other’s vulnerabilities better than long-standing adversaries.   India forms the third side of this regional triangle. Over the past two decades, New Delhi has invested billions of dollars in Afghanistan through reconstruction projects, infrastructure, education, and trade. As relations between Islamabad and Kabul have deteriorated, India has found greater diplomatic space to strengthen its presence. Development assistance, expanding trade, and improved connectivity have gradually transformed India into an increasingly influential partner for Afghanistan.   The result is a new regional reality. Pakistan views Afghanistan primarily through the lens of security. Afghanistan seeks strategic independence and diversified economic partnerships. India has capitalised on the growing mistrust by expanding its diplomatic and commercial footprint.   Geography cannot be changed, but policies can. Pakistan and Afghanistan will remain neighbours regardless of political differences. Continued confrontation will benefit neither country, while diplomacy, intelligence cooperation, and mutual respect remain the only sustainable path forward. The future of South Asia will depend not on military victories but on whether Islamabad, Kabul, and New Delhi choose cooperation over confrontation.

    The architecture of world-building in fiction

    When readers choose a speculative novel or immerse themselves in a literary landscape, they are considering than following a character’s journey. They are stepping into a fully realized alternate reality. The imaginary reality is complete with its own geography, social hierarchies, natural laws, and cultural mythologies. While world-building is often discussed as a technical craft of maps, timelines, and terminology, its true power lies in psychology. The most compelling fictional universes merely inform readers. They subtly reshape how the human brain processes space, identity, and meaning. Psychologists refer to the mental phenomenon of becoming lost in a narrative as narrative transportation. When world-building is executed with precision, readers undergo a temporary shift in consciousness. Their immediate physical surroundings fade, and their working memory fully commits to the sensory and spatial details of the fictional environment. This process relies heavily on cognitive schemas. The mental blueprints the brain uses to organize information about the real world. Effective authors exploit these schemas. They purposefully present familiar elements of human behavior or physics to evoke wonder. What makes world-building psychologically resonant is the sheer volume of factual detail an author creates. Above all, the emotional truth that lies within those details. A fantasy city or distant alien colony feels authentic. Especially, its architecture, customs, and laws reflect the lived anxieties and aspirations of its inhabitants. Consider how fictional societies address scarcity, power, memory, or grief. When a setting’s internal logic mirrors fundamental human dilemmas, the brain accepts the setting as tangible. The world becomes a living stage rather than a static backdrop. Furthermore, immersive world-building fulfills a profound psychological need for safe exploration.  Well-crafted settings safely ask readers to navigate complex political systems, environmental collapses, or unfamiliar norms from a comfortable distance. Fiction acts as cognitive testing where readers can process real-world existential fears without experiencing direct danger. The sense of discovery that comes from decoding a world’s hidden rules releases dopamine. The experience rewards the reader’s curiosity and keeps them engaged across hundreds of pages. Ultimately, world-building is an exercise in mutual trust between writer and reader. The author provides the architectural framework. However, the reader’s mind brings the bricks and mortar. They use their own memories, visual imaginations, and emotional experiences to bring the landscape to life. When done right, a well-built fictional world never truly leaves the reader. Long after the final page is turned, its echoes linger in the mind. The immersive imagination forever alters how we view the boundary between what is real and what can be imagined.
