Taylor Swift wedding dress sparks bridal fashion buzz

Taylor Swift’s closely guarded wedding dress has already begun influencing the bridal fashion industry, even though the design has yet to be publicly revealed.

Bridal companies are preparing for a possible surge in demand for gowns inspired by the pop star’s wedding look.

Swift reportedly wore a Christian Dior creation during a private celebration at Madison Square Garden on July 3. Details of the dress have remained tightly controlled, leaving fans and designers waiting for images of the outfit.

David’s Bridal is among the companies preparing for the potential trend. The retailer’s design team has reportedly developed around two dozen concepts based on styles associated with Swift.

The designs explore elements such as Hollywood glamour and drop-waist silhouettes. The company expects to move quickly once more details about Swift’s dress become available.

Search interest for Swift-inspired wedding dresses has also reportedly increased on the retailer’s website.

Designers are considering several possibilities for the next major bridal trend. These include embellished ball gowns, minimalist dresses with subtle detailing and shorter outfits that could be worn during a wedding reception or ceremony change.

Design teams are also watching for details beyond the dress itself. Swift’s hairstyle, makeup, colours, floral decorations and veil could all influence future bridal collections.

Other major bridal brands are also monitoring the situation.

Spanish bridal label Pronovias said it could take inspiration from the silhouette, fabrics and overall style associated with Swift’s wedding appearance. The company has previously drawn inspiration from high-profile celebrity and royal weddings.

Designers at luxury bridal houses are particularly interested in whether Swift chooses an unusual colour, fabric or distinctive veil. Such details could quickly spread through the wedding fashion market if they attract attention from brides.

New York-based Jenny Yoo is taking a more cautious approach and waiting for the dress to be revealed before making design decisions.

The Justin Alexander Group is also considering the possibility of incorporating Swift-inspired elements into its upcoming collections. The company is currently working on designs for its spring and summer 2028 range.

If Swift’s dress generates strong demand, bridal companies could attempt to bring similar styles to stores earlier than their usual production schedules.

Independent bridal retailers are expected to take a less direct approach. Rather than reproducing Swift’s dress, they may highlight existing gowns that share similar features with the celebrity’s eventual look.

The fashion frenzy also raises intellectual property questions.

Legal experts say US copyright rules generally do not protect the basic cut, shape or silhouette of clothing. This can allow designers to create gowns influenced by a particular aesthetic.

However, distinctive decorative details such as embroidery, beadwork or other original elements may receive legal protection.

Brands could also face trademark or unfair competition issues if they falsely imply that a Swift-inspired gown is officially connected to the singer or Dior.

For this reason, bridal companies are expected to draw inspiration from broader trends rather than directly market dresses using Swift’s or Dior’s names.

South Korea football association apologises over old referee scandal

South Korea’s football association has apologised over a controversial old scandal involving claims that foreign referees were provided inappropriate entertainment during visits to the country more than a decade ago. The apology came after a media report revived allegations surrounding incidents that reportedly took place between 2011 and 2012, including during visits by referees involved in qualifying matches for major international tournaments. According to the report, foreign match officials were allegedly provided inappropriate entertainment on several occasions. It cited a 2016 investigation by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which reportedly found that such entertainment had been arranged seven times between March 2011 and March 2012. The allegations included visits to massage establishments where the costs of sexual services were reportedly covered. The claims have renewed questions over the standards and practices surrounding officials during that period. The Korea Football Association expressed regret over the matter and apologised for the controversy. The governing body also stressed that such practices are no longer taking place and that corporate cards are not being used in a similar manner. The resurfacing of the allegations comes at a difficult time for the association, which is already facing scrutiny over the appointment of former national team coach Hong Myung-bo. South Korean police reportedly raided the association’s offices on Thursday as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hong’s appointment, which has attracted significant criticism. The latest developments have therefore placed the football body under renewed pressure to address concerns over governance and transparency. While the historical allegations date back more than a decade, the association’s apology has once again brought the episode into the spotlight, raising fresh questions about accountability within South Korean football.

Oil prices climb amid US-Iran tensions as markets brace for supply risks

LONDON: Global oil prices moved higher on Friday and were set to post strong weekly gains as investors closely monitored escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, raising fears of potential disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East. Brent crude futures advanced by 1.45%, reaching $88.33 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 1.26% to $82.27 a barrel. The gains came as diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional conflict showed little progress, increasing uncertainty in global energy markets. Market participants remained focused on reports that Washington could intensify economic pressure on Tehran, including the possibility of expanding maritime restrictions and tightening sanctions. Analysts said any further deterioration in relations between the two countries could have a significant impact on global crude exports, particularly given the Middle East’s critical role in oil production. Energy analysts noted that concerns over supply interruptions have become a key driver of recent price movements. While no major disruption has yet occurred, traders are pricing in the risk that a broader conflict could affect shipping routes and regional oil infrastructure. “Geopolitical developments continue to dominate market sentiment,” analysts said, adding that a major escalation could trigger a sharper increase in oil prices and add to inflationary pressures worldwide. Meanwhile, economic data from the United States added another dimension to market activity. A survey released on Friday indicated that consumer sentiment weakened in early August as households faced higher living costs, partly linked to rising energy prices and global uncertainty. US retail sales data also came in weaker than expected, leading investors to scale back expectations of another interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve next month. The softer economic outlook pushed the US dollar lower and reduced Treasury yields, offering support to commodities priced in dollars, including gold and oil. Spot gold prices climbed 0.69% to $4,380.03 per ounce, while US gold futures settled 0.4% higher at $4,437.30 an ounce as investors sought safe-haven assets amid geopolitical concerns. In currency markets, the Japanese yen strengthened slightly against the US dollar, trading near 159.37 per dollar. The movement followed reports that the Bank of Japan may consider raising interest rates as early as September. However, traders continued to watch the key 160-yen level, which could prompt intervention by Japanese authorities. Global equity markets showed mixed performance. On Wall Street, technology stocks weighed on major indexes after recent gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 73.41 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also closed lower. Despite Friday’s decline, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq remained on course for a third consecutive weekly gain. European markets also ended lower, snapping a four-week winning streak as rising oil prices and geopolitical risks overshadowed generally positive corporate earnings. MSCI’s global equity index edged down 0.09%, reflecting cautious investor sentiment, while Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan recorded modest gains. Market strategists said investors are increasingly balancing optimism over corporate earnings and expectations of easier monetary policy against uncertainty surrounding international conflicts. John Sidawi, Senior Portfolio Manager at Federated Hermes, observed that financial markets have recently shown resilience despite geopolitical shocks, but warned that this calm may not last indefinitely. He noted that either a significant escalation in conflict or a clear diplomatic breakthrough could lead to a much stronger market reaction than current asset prices suggest.

Karachi petroleum dealers consider options as dispute over strike call looms

Plans for a nationwide closure of petrol pumps entered a new phase after dealers in Karachi refrained from immediately supporting a shutdown call issued by petrol pump owners. The Petrol Pump Owners Association had instructed fuel outlets to close across the country from midnight following inconclusive negotiations with Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik. However, the Karachi Petroleum Dealers Association did not move to align with the closure order due to disagreements between the two bodies. To address the situation, the Petroleum Dealers Association scheduled an executive committee meeting to consult with counterparts across Pakistan and evaluate the seven-day deadline set by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The meeting’s outcome will decide whether the association proceeds with a nationwide strike or pursues alternative methods of protest. The Petroleum Dealers Association stated that the government has requested an additional week to resolve outstanding demands and assured dealers that its concerns will be addressed. The association noted that it will consider the government’s request during its internal consultations and formally communicate its final strategy to OGRA and relevant state authorities.

Govt not serious about political dialogue, says R…

Islamabad: Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Raja Nasir Abbas, has accused the government of lacking genuine commitment to political engagement, saying it is not serious about holding meaningful talks to resolve the country’s ongoing political challenges. Speaking to private media, Abbas said the opposition has consistently advocated dialogue and political engagement as the best way to address national issues. He stressed that the opposition remains ready for constructive negotiations and urged the government to take practical steps toward initiating the process. Referring to recent efforts aimed at opening communication channels, Abbas said senior politician Mahmood Khan Achakzai had proposed a meeting in Parliament’s Constitution Room and had even suggested that discussions could take place at the residence of government representative Rana Sanaullah if needed. According to Abbas, these proposals reflected the opposition’s willingness to find common ground. Currently in Iraq to attend Arbaeen commemorations, Abbas said he is prepared to return to Pakistan immediately if meaningful negotiations are scheduled. He reiterated that the opposition is willing to meet the prime minister and the government’s negotiating team at any time to pursue a political settlement. Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai also questioned the government’s intentions, arguing that recent actions contradict its public calls for dialogue. He said that if the government were genuinely interested in negotiations, it would not have registered terrorism-related cases against opposition members. Yousafzai maintained that successful negotiations require a positive political environment, alleging that government actions have instead deepened tensions. He further claimed that meaningful talks would have included facilitating meetings between opposition leaders and jailed PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, adding that even family members have reportedly faced restrictions on meeting him. The latest statements highlight the continuing deadlock between the government and the opposition, with both sides publicly expressing support for dialogue while accusing each other of creating obstacles to meaningful political negotiations.

Punjab imposes 60-day ban on swimming in water bod…

The Punjab government has imposed a 60-day ban on swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across the province. The restriction has been introduced under Section 144 of the law. The Punjab Home Department issued a notification announcing the ban. According to the notification, people will also be prohibited from bathing in rainwater accumulated on streets, roads and open areas. The government has also restricted boating without official permission in the province. The ban applies to the water bodies covered under the notification. Officials said the restrictions were imposed to protect human lives during the ongoing monsoon season. Water levels have increased in several dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across Punjab. Heavy rainfall has also created pools of standing water in different areas. Authorities fear that entering these waters could increase the risk of drowning and other accidents. The government has therefore moved to prevent people from swimming or bathing in potentially dangerous locations. The Home Department said the restrictions would remain in place for 60 days. Citizens have been advised to cooperate with the authorities and avoid entering rivers, canals, dams and other water bodies. The ban comes as Punjab continues to experience monsoon rains. Several parts of the province have already faced heavy rainfall, flooding and rising water levels. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas where water levels are rising. People have also been advised to follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary activities near flooded areas.
