Punjab imposes 60-day ban on swimming in water bod…

The Punjab government has imposed a 60-day ban on swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across the province.

The restriction has been introduced under Section 144 of the law. The Punjab Home Department issued a notification announcing the ban.

According to the notification, people will also be prohibited from bathing in rainwater accumulated on streets, roads and open areas.

The government has also restricted boating without official permission in the province. The ban applies to the water bodies covered under the notification.

Officials said the restrictions were imposed to protect human lives during the ongoing monsoon season.

Water levels have increased in several dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across Punjab. Heavy rainfall has also created pools of standing water in different areas.

Authorities fear that entering these waters could increase the risk of drowning and other accidents. The government has therefore moved to prevent people from swimming or bathing in potentially dangerous locations.

The Home Department said the restrictions would remain in place for 60 days. Citizens have been advised to cooperate with the authorities and avoid entering rivers, canals, dams and other water bodies.

The ban comes as Punjab continues to experience monsoon rains. Several parts of the province have already faced heavy rainfall, flooding and rising water levels.

Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas where water levels are rising. People have also been advised to follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary activities near flooded areas.

  • Welfare pharmacy seal-off adds to poor patients’ woes

GUJRAT: The District Health Authority (DHA) has shut down the medical store of the Patients’ Welfare Association at Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital following the recent visit of Punjab Secretary for Health and Population Nadia Saqib, a move that has drawn concern from patients, civil society representatives and local residents. The medical store, which had been providing medicines to poor and needy patients on a welfare basis, was closed after Secretary Nadia Saqib’s visit to Gujrat last week. Medical stores at THQ hospitals in Kharian and Kunjah were also closed following the health secretary’s directions, according to official sources. The Health Department’s position is that medicines should not be distributed without a Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) report. Officials said the Jalalpur Jattan store was sealed because the medicines available there did not have the required DTL reports. They maintained that the department could not allow medicines to be provided to patients without ensuring their quality through the prescribed testing process. However, the closure of the patients’ welfare association’s medical store has raised concerns among local residents, particularly because the association had been supplementing the medicines officially provided by the hospital and helping poor patients who could not afford medicines from private pharmacies. Sources said the official medicine budget of Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital was already very low, even when compared with hospitals functioning at the THQ level. Local authorities had therefore engaged civil society and philanthropists to supplement the officially provided medicines and facilitate poor and needy patients. The development has also triggered protests by civil society representatives, who have demanded immediate attention to the shortage of medicines and other healthcare facilities at the hospital, particularly now that the welfare pharmacy is no longer operational. Representatives of the Patients’ Welfare Association have also urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take notice of the situation and ensure the establishment of a proper THQ hospital at Jalalpur Jattan, permission for the resumption of medicine provision through appropriate channels, and an increase in the hospital’s medicine budget. The association’s representatives have also criticised the frequent changes of medical superintendents at Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital and demanded more medical officers and other staff to improve healthcare services. Jalalpur Jattan was upgraded as a tehsil headquarters by former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in 2022. Despite being the second major urban centre of Gujrat district, the tehsil has yet to get a THQ-level hospital for its population of around 700,000, according to local sources. The issue has become particularly sensitive for residents because the Patients’ Welfare Association had emerged as an important support system for poor patients seeking treatment at the civil hospital. While the Health Department insists that medicines must undergo the required testing process before being distributed, local residents argue that the closure has further reduced an already limited source of medicines for needy patients. The situation has now put the spotlight on both the quality-control requirements for medicines and the broader shortage of healthcare resources at Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day overcomes leak fears as …

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven that even a major piracy leak cannot slow down one of Marvel’s biggest theatrical events in years. Just hours before the highly anticipated film officially premiered, a high-quality bootleg copy reportedly surfaced online and quickly spread across X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The leak sparked concerns that piracy could hurt the movie’s opening-day performance, with fans urged across social media to avoid spoilers and support the official theatrical release.  Despite those fears, the latest Spider-Man adventure bounced back in spectacular fashion. According to early box office figures, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an astonishing $72 million in preview screenings, setting a new Marvel record. The figure surpassed the previous preview record of $60 million, which had been held by Avengers: Endgame since 2019. The milestone highlights the enormous excitement surrounding Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker and demonstrates that audience demand remained strong despite the piracy concerns.  Industry analysts now expect the film to deliver one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history, with projections ranging between $260 million and $280 million worldwide. If those estimates hold, Brand New Day will cement itself as one of Marvel Studios’ most successful launches ever.  The overwhelming interest is hardly surprising. The film marks Holland’s first solo Spider-Man outing since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The story follows Peter Parker as he struggles with life after Doctor Strange’s memory spell erased his identity from the world. Living in isolation, Peter faces emotional challenges while confronting dangerous new enemies in a fresh chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Marvel has also benefited from an extensive promotional campaign leading up to the release. Earlier this year, the movie’s trailer generated unprecedented online attention, becoming the biggest trailer launch in history with more than 719 million views in its first 24 hours. That record later placed it ahead of the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer, underlining just how much anticipation surrounded the Spider-Man sequel long before tickets went on sale.  The recent piracy incident nevertheless serves as another reminder of the growing challenge facing major Hollywood releases. High-profile films increasingly become targets for online leaks, forcing studios to step up security while encouraging audiences to experience blockbusters in theaters instead of through illegal copies.  For Marvel, however, the early results suggest the leak had little impact on audience enthusiasm. Instead of slowing momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung past expectations, broken a long-standing Marvel preview record, and positioned itself as one of the defining box office successes of 2026.

Pakistan to lead new Turkey-Saudi defence pact

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to take the first three-year leadership of a new secretariat established under the defence agreement signed by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia in Makkah on Aug 7, giving Islamabad a prominent role in coordinating the emerging regional security framework. According to Turkish and international media reports, the secretariat will serve as the central mechanism for implementing decisions taken by the three countries and coordinating their growing defence cooperation. After Pakistan’s initial three-year term, leadership is expected to pass to Saudi Arabia and then Türkiye. The agreement is built around a collective-security principle under which an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three. However, unlike NATO’s automatic response mechanism, the pact leaves the nature of any response to be determined according to the circumstances and the request of the affected country. A high-level council comprising foreign and defence ministers as well as military chiefs is also expected to oversee the arrangement. The council is expected to meet twice a year, while cooperation could range from intelligence sharing and logistics to direct military assistance when required. The partnership also places a strong emphasis on defence technology. The three countries plan to expand cooperation in unmanned systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence, alongside joint military exercises designed to improve coordination among their armed forces. Joint defence production, research and technology transfer are also part of the broader framework. For Pakistan, the first leadership term could prove strategically significant. Islamabad already maintains longstanding defence ties with both Ankara and Riyadh, and its role at the secretariat could give it greater influence in regional security diplomacy. Türkiye has stressed that the agreement is defensive and is not directed against any particular country. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the pact is intended to strengthen regional security rather than replace existing alliances. With the Middle East facing continued instability, the new arrangement could become an important test of how effectively three regional powers can turn political solidarity into practical defence cooperation.

Ancient Roman shipwreck found off Sicily carrying hundreds of 2,000-year-old amphorae

Italian authorities have uncovered an ancient Roman merchant ship off the coast of Sicily, dating back to the 2nd or 1st Century BC. The vessel was discovered lying 46 metres underwater roughly three nautical miles off Mazara del Vallo. Measuring 21 metres long and 6 metres wide, the vessel’s cargo holds remain piled with hundreds of well-preserved amphorae, primarily Dressel 1A ceramic jars used during the late Roman Republic to transport commodities such as wine, olive oil, and grain. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the site as “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years”. Local fisherman and free-diver Giacomo De Mola first flagged the site after detecting an anomaly on his sonar scanner that resembled a massive reef or rock. Upon diving down to investigate, he encountered the intact cargo mound surrounded by marine life. Following De Mola’s report, specialist divers from the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Carabinieri Art Squad), working alongside the Sicilian Region’s Superintendency of the Sea, were dispatched to survey and document the seabed. Archaeologists also identified two lead anchor stocks alongside the vessel’s structure. Italian maritime authorities have implemented security measures to safeguard the wreckage from illicit looting while further documentation and cargo analysis take place.

Thailand’s ancient monastery earns Unesco World Heritage status

A historic Buddhist monastery in southern Thailand has been added to the Unesco World Heritage List, giving the country another globally recognized cultural landmark and providing stronger support for its long term preservation. The recognition marks an important milestone for Thailand as it is the first World Heritage site located in the country’s southern region. The newly listed site is Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, located in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The Thai Foreign Ministry announced that it is now Thailand’s ninth World Heritage site. Officials said the designation will help improve conservation efforts through closer cooperation between national authorities and local communities, ensuring the monastery remains protected for future generations. The announcement was celebrated at the monastery with traditional ceremonies. Monks gathered to chant blessings while officials and visitors took part in the event by striking a ceremonial gong. Local media described the atmosphere as one of pride and celebration as the centuries old temple received international recognition. According to Unesco, the monastery has served as one of the region’s leading Buddhist centers since it was established in the eighth century. Over the centuries, it has become an important place of worship, education, and cultural exchange. The temple complex is home to impressive stone stupas, a large reclining Buddha statue, and numerous standing and seated golden Buddha figures. Visitors can also see detailed sculptures and artistic depictions of guardian deities throughout the site. The monastery reflects a rich blend of religious and cultural influences that shaped Southeast Asia over many centuries. Because of its location on the Thai peninsula between the Pacific and Indian oceans, it became a meeting point for traders, pilgrims, and scholars from across the region. Unesco noted that traditions and architectural styles from Brahmanism, Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Theravada Buddhism, along with influences from India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, are all visible in the site’s design and religious practices. These different cultural traditions have been woven into the monastery’s buildings, ceremonies, and daily rituals, making it a valuable symbol of the region’s shared history. The site’s historical importance and unique cultural identity were key reasons behind its inclusion on the prestigious World Heritage List. Thailand hopes the international recognition will also strengthen its tourism industry. World Heritage status often attracts more international visitors, helping local economies while raising awareness about the importance of preserving cultural landmarks. Tourism remains one of Thailand’s most important economic sectors, although visitor numbers have not yet fully recovered to levels seen before the Covid-19 pandemic. Government figures show that tourist arrivals during the first half of this year were more than three percent lower than during the same period in 2025. Officials believe the addition of another World Heritage site could encourage more travelers to explore destinations beyond Thailand’s traditional tourist hotspots. Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan now joins a distinguished list of Thai World Heritage sites that includes the Historic City of Ayutthaya, the Thungyai Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, and the Ancient Town of Si Thep. The latest recognition highlights Thailand’s rich cultural heritage while reinforcing efforts to preserve one of the country’s most significant religious and historical treasures for generations to come.
