London motorway chaos: M25 closed after major industrial fire near St Albans

A major industrial fire near London has forced the closure of the M25 in both directions, triggering widespread traffic disruption and fears of possible explosions.

The blaze broke out at a commercial premises in Ventura Park, near St Albans, shortly after 9.20am on Tuesday. Huge plumes of thick smoke could be seen rising over the motorway as firefighters rushed to contain the fire.

The M25 has been closed between Junction 21A and Junction 22, with motorists warned to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Emergency services took the decision to close the motorway amid concerns over smoke, falling debris and the potential for secondary explosions from the industrial site.

Multiple fire appliances have been deployed to tackle the blaze, while police officers are also at the scene managing the emergency and surrounding traffic.

National Highways has warned motorists to expect significant delays and congestion, urging drivers to allow extra time for their journeys or avoid the affected area altogether.

The incident has caused major disruption on one of London’s key orbital routes, with congestion building on surrounding roads as traffic is diverted away from the closed section.

Residents close to the fire have been advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the heavy smoke.

The fire is also close to a railway line, with Network Rail representatives liaising with firefighters as emergency services assess the situation.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Emergency crews remain at the scene and the M25 will stay closed while firefighters work to bring the blaze under control and authorities determine when it is safe to reopen the motorway.

Motorists are being urged not to travel towards the affected section and to follow official traffic and emergency-service instructions.

The incident remains ongoing.

Shaheen Shah Afridi leaves Lanka Premier League du…

Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has returned home after leaving the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to personal reasons. The left-arm pacer, who was representing the Kandy Royals in the tournament, departed from the event before its conclusion, ending his participation in the ongoing competition. During his time in the Lanka Premier League, Shaheen Afridi was also involved in a disagreement with his team management over his exclusion from the playing squad for a match on July 19. The incident reportedly created tension between the player and the franchise during the tournament. In the match against the Colombo Capitals, Shaheen Afridi was informed that he would be used as an impact player. However, his name was not included in the official team sheet submitted for the match. The omission reportedly upset the Pakistani fast bowler, who expressed his disappointment over the situation. The issue was later addressed after the Kandy Royals management apologized to Shaheen Afridi. Following the apology and discussions with the team officials, the fast bowler returned to action and participated in subsequent matches for the franchise. Despite the disagreement, Shaheen Afridi continued to contribute to his team’s campaign in the tournament. He played six matches in the Lanka Premier League and took seven wickets, demonstrating his effectiveness as one of the leading fast bowlers in the competition. Shaheen Afridi is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most important international cricketers and has established himself as a key figure in the national team’s bowling attack. Known for his pace, swing, and ability to take early wickets, he has represented Pakistan across all formats of international cricket and has earned recognition as one of the world’s top fast bowlers. His participation in overseas T20 leagues has provided him with valuable experience and exposure against international players. The Lanka Premier League was another opportunity for him to showcase his skills and maintain competitive form ahead of future international assignments. The Kandy Royals management’s decision to apologize after the team sheet controversy helped resolve the matter, allowing Shaheen Afridi to continue his involvement in the tournament. However, his early departure due to personal reasons means that he will no longer be available for the remaining matches of the league. The exact nature of the personal reasons behind Shaheen Afridi’s return to Pakistan has not been disclosed. His decision comes as part of his personal commitments, and there has been no official indication that his departure is related to any injury or cricketing issue. Fans and cricket analysts have closely followed Shaheen Afridi’s performances in the tournament, particularly because of his reputation as a match-winning bowler. His seven wickets in six matches highlighted his continued ability to perform at the highest level in franchise cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Board and supporters will now be hoping that Shaheen Afridi returns refreshed and prepared for upcoming international challenges. His fitness, form, and availability remain important factors for Pakistan’s future cricketing plans.

Bessent says Hormuz shipping deal with Iran could …

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to normal shipping traffic could be reached within a day or two, as diplomatic activity intensified across the Gulf region. Speaking in a television interview, Bessent said American officials are in active discussions with Iranian counterparts and expressed optimism about a near term breakthrough. “There is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow,” he said, adding that the goal is to move toward a more normalized posture in the conflict. Asked whether any agreement would let Iran charge ships a toll for using the waterway, Bessent said he expects the outcome to guarantee freedom of movement rather than a fee based system. He noted that vessel traffic through the strait has picked up in recent days despite lingering danger, and predicted that energy prices would ease once a deal takes hold. His comments followed a report from The New York Times saying Iran and Oman have moved close to an arrangement that would restore commercial shipping through the strait. Under the terms described in that report, inbound vessels would travel through a corridor close to the Iranian coast while outbound ships would use a route nearer Oman. Iranian officials told the newspaper that no formal tolls would apply, though they said a service charge tied to environmental protection, cargo security and staffing costs would be split evenly between Tehran and Muscat. A US official pushed back on that characterization, calling the Iranian version inaccurate and insisting any temporary shipping lanes would not need Iranian sign off or involve fees. The report also noted that some Pentagon officials worry the arrangement could look like a concession to Tehran, while some Iranian officials privately questioned whether it would actually stop further American strikes. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that mediators including Doha, Pakistan and Oman continue to coordinate closely to bridge the gap between Washington and Tehran, exchanging draft proposals between the two sides. Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said there is still no clear timeline for a final agreement, and Qatar separately called for a return to normal conditions in the strait while diplomacy continues. Tension over the waterway remained visible even as talks progressed. A dry bulk carrier called the Minoan Pioneer, sailing under the Liberian flag, was struck by an unidentified projectile near Oman’s coast on Tuesday, according to maritime security sources. The strike reportedly hit the engine room and sparked a fire in the crew’s living quarters, forcing the entire crew to abandon ship. One crew member, the vessel’s third engineer, was reported missing. The ship’s Greece based operator did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The incident followed an earlier report from the UK Maritime Trade Operations center, which said a separate cargo vessel had broadcast that it was hit by an unknown projectile about 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. No group has claimed responsibility for either strike, and authorities have opened an investigation. In Tehran, President Masoud Pezeshkian used a televised address to reject reports that he had offered his resignation amid the ongoing standoff with Washington. “If I were going to resign, I would announce it publicly,” he said, denying any rift with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei or the armed forces and insisting the leadership is working in full coordination. He separately said Iran intends to defend its territorial integrity but has no interest in expanding the conflict, while claiming Iranian missile and drone strikes had disrupted US military goals during a recent 17 day period of fighting. The regional picture grew more complicated elsewhere. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for a drone strike on Najran Airport in southern Saudi Arabia, with military spokesman Yahya Saree saying the attack struck its target accurately. He described the strike as retaliation for alleged Saudi drone incursions over Yemen’s Saada and Hajjah provinces and warned that further violations would draw a response. Saudi authorities had not commented on the claim as of Tuesday. In Lebanon, a seventh round of direct negotiations with Israel opened in Rome under American sponsorship, continuing talks tied to a framework agreement the two sides signed in June covering a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory in exchange for Lebanese army deployment and the disarming of armed factions, a clear reference to Hezbollah. Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassem used a speech at an Arbaeen commemoration in Baalbek to criticize the talks, saying they have delivered only “shame, humiliation, despair and repeated concessions” for Lebanon. He accused Lebanese President Joseph Aoun of acting with bias rather than serving as a unifying figure and argued that only the earlier US brokered truce between Washington and Tehran had kept Israeli strikes at bay. Financial markets showed relief at the signs of diplomatic movement. Brent crude futures fell about 7 percent to near $83.77 a barrel on Monday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high. Asian stocks and oil prices ticked higher again on Tuesday. In a Truth Social post, Trump described Iran’s leadership as “unbelievably duplicitous” while claiming more talks were scheduled for the near future. He also reasserted that the US Navy maintains full control over the strait, writing that nothing passes through unless Washington allows it. The exchange fits a broader pattern that has defined the conflict since it began roughly five months ago under the codename Operation Epic Fury. Trump has repeatedly threatened major military escalation only to step back and cite diplomatic openings, while Iran has publicly refused direct talks with Washington since a memorandum of understanding both sides signed collapsed in early July. Washington maintains that June’s memorandum obligated Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, while Tehran insists the agreement preserved its authority over traffic through the waterway, a disagreement that continues to sit at the center of the standoff.

Mass HIV screening detects 141 positive cases afte…

A large-scale HIV screening campaign launched after the emergence of cases at Karachi’s Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital has identified 141 HIV-positive individuals, prompting authorities to intensify investigations and strengthen preventive measures across Sindh. Speaking at a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Regulation and Coordination, Sindh Labour and Human Resources Minister Saeed Ghani said more than 10,500 people were screened in and around Valika Hospital. Of them, 120 tested positive for HIV, including 81 children of registered Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) workers, while the remaining 39 had no affiliation with the institution. Ghani said the provincial government has assumed responsibility for providing treatment to all affected children and is working to ensure they receive the best possible medical care. He added that a panel of leading healthcare experts and hospitals is being formed to oversee the treatment process. As part of precautionary measures, HIV screening was also expanded to Landhi Hospital and surrounding areas. More than 7,500 people were tested, with 21 additional HIV-positive cases confirmed. According to the minister, these individuals had no previous record of treatment at the hospital, suggesting that some infections may have originated from other sources. The minister also revealed that final show-cause notices had been issued to 37 doctors, paramedics and hospital officials following inquiry committee recommendations into the Valika Hospital incident. He warned that anyone found responsible for criminal negligence would face both departmental and legal action. To support affected families, Ghani announced that a Rs2 billion endowment fund has been established under SESSI. The fund will be managed by an independent body to ensure transparency and provide long-term assistance to those impacted by the outbreak.

Police identify key suspects in Abdullah Tahir mur…

LAHORE: Police have made significant progress in the investigation into the murder of former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ticket-holder Abdullah Tahir, who was shot dead in Lahore on July 29. Investigators say fresh evidence has led to changes in the direction of the probe, while efforts are underway to arrest all those allegedly involved in the killing. According to police officials, the investigation has been reassigned after the suspected shooters were identified during the inquiry. The case was initially being handled by the Investigation Wing of Ghalib Market Police Station. However, investigators decided to revise the probe after obtaining new information about the suspects and their alleged roles in the incident. Police said the alleged main facilitator, Arsalan Jatt, played a key role in the planning and execution of the attack. Investigators claim he transported the suspected shooters from Gujranwala to Lahore in a vehicle before the murder took place. Authorities believe this journey was part of a pre-planned operation carried out before the attack on Abdullah Tahir. Officials further stated that the prime suspect accused of masterminding the murder, identified as Gogi Butt, is currently outside Pakistan. Police said legal proceedings have been initiated to secure his return to the country. Authorities plan to seek the issuance of an international Red Notice to facilitate his arrest and extradition through the relevant international law enforcement agencies. Investigators are also working to trace the remaining suspects believed to have participated in the crime. Police teams are analysing evidence, questioning witnesses and reviewing available records to establish the complete sequence of events and identify everyone involved in the planning and execution of the attack. Police officials said the investigation is continuing on multiple fronts and further arrests are expected as more evidence is collected. Authorities have expressed confidence that all individuals responsible for the murder will be brought before the courts. Abdullah Tahir, a former PTI ticket-holder, was killed in a shooting incident in Lahore on July 29.

Stephen Baldwin explains why he chose faith over H…

Stephen Baldwin has opened up about one of the biggest decisions of his career, revealing why he stepped away from mainstream Hollywood despite enjoying major success in the 1990s. The actor said he deliberately chose a different path from fellow movie star Tom Cruise, explaining that fame and blockbuster success were never his ultimate goals.  Baldwin, now 60, reflected on his career in a recent interview with People, looking back at the period following his acclaimed performance in the Oscar-winning film The Usual Suspects. At the time, many believed he was on track to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Instead, Baldwin said he decided to walk away from that path after experiencing a profound change in his personal life.  “I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise and have to make $100 million at the box office,” Baldwin said, adding that he preferred living a simpler life over chasing blockbuster success. He stressed that the comment was not intended as criticism of Cruise but as an explanation of his own priorities and ambitions.  According to Baldwin, everything changed in the early 2000s when he became a born-again Christian. His spiritual journey began after a Brazilian housekeeper working for his family shared what he described as a prophetic message, saying he and his wife, Kennya Baldwin, would one day dedicate their lives to ministry. Although skeptical at first, Baldwin said his perspective shifted after attending Christian events with his sister Beth Baldwin.  One event featuring Christian skateboarders particularly inspired him. The experience led him to create Livin It, a faith-based skateboarding video that combined extreme sports with Christian teachings. The project became a success and eventually grew into a nationwide ministry that took Baldwin to more than 125 churches over four years. That, he said, was the moment he realized his future was no longer in mainstream Hollywood.  Since then, Baldwin has focused on producing faith-based content while remaining active through podcasts, speaking engagements and independent projects. He admitted that his outspoken religious beliefs and political views may have made him less appealing to traditional Hollywood studios, but he has no regrets about the direction his life has taken.  The actor also credited his family for keeping him grounded. Married to Kennya Baldwin since 1990, he said his wife has been his “anchor,” while describing his faith as the foundation of everything he does. As the father of Hailey Bieber and grandfather to two young children, Baldwin said family remains his greatest blessing.  Looking back, Baldwin believes choosing purpose over fame was the right decision. While his career could have followed a more conventional Hollywood trajectory, he says he found greater fulfillment by dedicating his life to faith, family and meaningful work. Rather than measuring success by box office numbers, Baldwin now defines it through the impact he can have on others and remains convinced that his best years are still ahead.
