Lebanon becomes first Middle Eastern country to abolish death penalty

Lebanon’s parliament has voted to abolish capital punishment, making it the first nation in the Middle East to formally end the practice.

While Lebanon has maintained a de facto moratorium on executions since 2004, courts continued to hand down death sentences for major crimes including murder, terrorism, and espionage.

Prior to the vote, human rights group Amnesty International estimated that 85 individuals remained on death row across the country.

Under the new legislation, capital punishment will be replaced by life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour.

Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar described the vote as “historic”, noting that the legal existence of the death penalty had previously hampered Beirut’s ability to secure the extradition of criminal suspects from nations where capital punishment is outlawed.

International observers and human rights organisations welcomed the landmark decision.

The European Union stated that Lebanon was setting a powerful example for the region, while French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot praised the vote as a courageous step that upholds democratic values. Human Rights Watch also lauded the law, calling it a monumental victory for human rights in the Middle East.

The 23-year-old actor opened up about his relationship during a recent interview, revealing that the couple first met while working together on Poetic License, the directorial debut of filmmaker Maude Apatow. Although they quickly developed a close connection on set, Hoffman explained that they did not begin dating until after filming had wrapped. According to the actor, the relationship became official when Parker visited New York to meet his mother, renowned costume designer Mimi O’Donnell. It was during that trip that Hoffman asked Parker to be his girlfriend, describing the moment as heartfelt and memorable. The actor shared that while filming helped them get to know each other, they intentionally waited until production had ended before taking their friendship to the next level. Their decision allowed them to separate work from their personal lives and build a relationship naturally. Following Hoffman’s confirmation, fans flooded social media with supportive messages celebrating the couple. Many admired their chemistry and expressed happiness that the actors had finally made their romance public. One fan commented that the pair appeared genuinely happy together and praised Hoffman for seeming kind and sincere. Another wrote that they loved seeing the two together, while a third jokingly referred to them as “two nepo babies,” acknowledging their famous Hollywood family backgrounds. Although their relationship has only now been publicly confirmed, rumors linking Hoffman and Parker have circulated since 2025. The pair first met in November 2024 while filming Poetic License, where they formed a close friendship. Despite their growing bond during production, they chose not to pursue a romantic relationship until several weeks after filming concluded. Speculation about their romance intensified in June 2025 when Parker hinted during an interview that she was seeing someone she described as “sweet.” Although she did not reveal the person’s identity, fans quickly began connecting the dots after noticing her frequent appearances with Hoffman. The rumors gained further momentum as the two were spotted together on multiple occasions, including social media posts that showcased their time together away from the spotlight. Interest in their relationship continued to grow in September 2025 when Hoffman and Parker attended the Toronto International Film Festival to promote Poetic License. During the event, the actors were photographed sharing a lighthearted moment while playing with a puppy, fueling even more speculation that they were more than just co-stars. Despite increasing public attention, both actors largely kept their private lives out of the spotlight, avoiding public discussion about their relationship for more than a year. Now, with Hoffman openly confirming their romance, fans finally have official confirmation that the pair are indeed together. His candid comments have been warmly received by supporters, many of whom have followed the couple’s journey from co-stars to partners. As both actors continue to build successful careers in Hollywood, their relationship has become one of the entertainment industry’s most talked-about young romances, with fans eager to see what lies ahead for the couple both on and off the screen.

Australia initiates legal action against Telegram over failure to remove extremist content

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman-Grant, has launched legal proceedings in the Federal Court against messaging platform Telegram, alleging the company failed to comply with statutory safety obligations under the country’s Online Safety Act. The regulator claims Telegram permitted a permissive environment by hosting easily accessible extremist content, including footage of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, the May 2022 Buffalo attack in New York, and filmed terrorist executions. The platform faces potential fines of up to 54.6 million Australian dollars for its non-compliance. The legal action follows a history of regulatory friction, including a one million Australian dollar fine imposed on Telegram in February 2025 for failing to answer inquiries regarding child abuse and violent material on time. Inman-Grant noted that whilst Australia does not license digital services, the regulator possesses the statutory authority to request a Federal Court order ceasing Telegram’s operations within the country if necessary. A spokesperson for Telegram rejected the allegations, stating that the platform’s anti-terrorism moderation efforts are well documented and confirming that the company will contest the claims in court.

Shahood Alvi sparks controversy with candid marriage remarks

Pakistani television actor and director Shahood Alvi has once again found himself at the centre of social media discussions following his candid remarks about marriage, relationships and the role of women in maintaining a healthy relationship. Shahood began his showbiz career at Pakistan Television as a boom operator alongside his maternal uncle, Iqbal Ansari. He later moved into acting and gradually established himself as a recognised performer through his work in several popular television dramas. The actor is married to Saima Shahood, and the couple has three daughters, Areeba, Sajal and Arija, all of whom are now married. Shahood frequently appears on morning shows, particularly programmes that feature discussions about marriage, relationships and family life. During a recent television appearance alongside actresses Laila Zuberi and Fariha Awan, Shahood shared his views on why some husbands may lose interest in their wives. His comments, however, quickly attracted attention and divided opinions online. Discussing the possible reasons behind a decline in a husband’s interest, Shahood suggested that women who spend most of their time at home may sometimes carry the smell of ingredients such as ginger and garlic from cooking. He contrasted this with men working in offices, where they may encounter women wearing perfumes. He questioned why a husband would remain attracted if his wife smelled of cooking ingredients, while women in offices might be dressed up and wearing fragrance. The actor also made another controversial remark when the discussion turned towards seeking professional help for marital problems. When Fariha Awan suggested therapy as an option for couples facing difficulties, Shahood jokingly questioned what would happen if a therapist ran away with someone’s wife. He repeated the warning while referring to psychiatrists, describing it as a humorous concern. Shahood further said that spending excessive amounts of time on a mobile phone could be a negative sign in a marriage. He suggested that women should also make an effort to regain their husbands’ attention by preparing food they enjoy and getting ready before their husbands return home. Laila Zuberi agreed that making an effort to look presentable for one’s spouse has traditionally been viewed positively. Recalling her childhood, she said she remembered her mother applying lipstick before her father returned home. Fariha Awan also supported the idea that women could make additional efforts to present themselves well before their husbands came home. Shahood went on to discuss his own marriage, saying he had tried to teach his wife several practical tasks, including paying bills, shopping for groceries and driving. However, he said jokingly that she never learned these skills and referred to her humorously as a “stubborn one.” He also recalled advice from actress Bushra Ansari, who had discouraged his wife from learning how to drive. According to Shahood, Bushra believed that once housewives learned to drive, their responsibilities could increase because they might then be expected to take children to school and bring them back. Following the television appearance, Shahood’s comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some users criticised his remarks as outdated or insensitive, others viewed them as part of the informal and humorous nature of morning-show conversations. Despite the debate, Shahood’s comments have once again placed discussions surrounding marriage, expectations from spouses and gender roles in the spotlight.
