Joe Root ends England curfew ahead of Pakistan Tests

BECKENHAM: England Test captain Joe Root has removed the midnight curfew previously imposed on the team, signalling a shift towards greater personal responsibility ahead of the three-match Test series against Pakistan.

Root, speaking to Sky Sports, said he did not believe strict curfews were necessary and instead wanted England players to behave like adults and take responsibility for their actions both on and off the field.

“There’s not going to be a curfew. I don’t think this needs to be a big deal, to be honest,” Root said.

The experienced batter explained that players needed the freedom to make sensible decisions without constant supervision. In his view, responsibility away from the cricket field should go hand in hand with the standards expected from players representing England.

Root said the team would focus on managing itself effectively, with players expected to “self-police” and look after one another. He also stressed that everyone in the squad understood the responsibilities that come with playing international cricket.

The decision marks a notable change from the approach taken under former captain Ben Stokes, when a midnight curfew was introduced as part of the team’s discipline and culture.

For Root, however, the priority is creating a strong environment rather than enforcing rigid rules. He said England should be remembered for their performances on the field rather than stories about incidents away from cricket.

The captain also acknowledged that players should be able to celebrate victories, enjoy themselves and have a drink when appropriate, provided they understand their responsibilities.

“Let’s be adults. Look after yourselves, look after each other,” Root said, emphasising the importance of a healthy team culture.

England are now preparing for a challenging Test series against Pakistan, with Root and head coach Stephen Fleming expected to establish clear standards for the squad.

The message from Root is straightforward: England’s players will have more freedom, but with that freedom comes accountability. The captain hopes the approach will strengthen team unity while keeping attention firmly on cricket.

The legislation includes dozens of recommendations made by investigators after the crash. The Senate had earlier passed its own proposal, known as the ROTOR Act, but the measure failed to secure enough support in the House under fast track voting procedures, leaving the reforms stalled. According to the NTSB, the collision could have been prevented if both aircraft had been equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast technology, commonly known as ADS-B. The system allows aircraft to continuously share their position with air traffic controllers and nearby aircraft, improving awareness in busy airspace and reducing the risk of collisions. Earlier this year, the NTSB concluded that failures within the Federal Aviation Administration contributed to the fatal accident. Investigators found that the FAA had allowed helicopters to operate too close to commercial flight paths near Washington’s airport without maintaining adequate separation. The agency was also criticized for failing to properly review safety data and for not acting on earlier recommendations to redirect helicopter traffic away from the area. The House approved legislation would require most US military aircraft to be fitted with collision prevention technology by 2031. Fighter jets, bombers and drones would be exempt from the requirement. The bill also introduces new standards for collision mitigation systems on civilian airplanes and helicopters to improve safety across the aviation sector. Lawmakers from both chambers are continuing negotiations to resolve differences between the House and Senate versions of the legislation before a final bill can be approved. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford recently said the agency has been providing technical guidance to Congress throughout the legislative process. He noted that the FAA has the authority to expand the use of ADS-B technology without waiting for new legislation but said clear direction from Congress would provide a stronger framework for implementing long term safety improvements. The NTSB believes the proposed reforms would significantly strengthen aviation safety and reduce the chances of another catastrophic midair collision.     Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned the government that his party could expand its ongoing protests into a nationwide wheel-jam and shutter-down strike if the petroleum levy is not abolished. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday, Rehman said the nationwide strike could begin after August 26, following 12th Rabiul Awwal. He said the party would also establish protest camps in different parts of the country as part of its campaign. If the government failed to respond to its demands, he warned that JI could consider marching towards Islamabad on foot. The JI chief said he would address the party’s sit-in in Lahore, while a public gathering was scheduled at its Karachi protest site on Friday. Rehman said rising inflation had placed a heavy burden on ordinary citizens. He criticised the petroleum levy, describing it as an unfair additional charge on consumers. According to him, consumers were paying around Rs80 per litre under the levy. He claimed the charge was originally introduced to support the modernisation of Pakistan’s oil refineries but that the government had collected more than Rs8 trillion through it while spending less than Rs100 billion on refinery upgrades. He called for the immediate abolition of the levy and urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reduce petrol and diesel prices by Rs130 per litre. The government recently revised fuel prices, reducing the price of high-speed diesel while increasing the price of petrol. Rehman said the JI’s protests in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar were gaining support from traders, religious scholars, young people and members of civil society. He said the demonstrations had grown beyond the petroleum levy issue and were now highlighting broader public concerns. He said JI would not attend government briefings as part of negotiations. Instead, he demanded that government representatives visit the protesters and engage with them directly. The JI leader also referred to the party’s previous campaign against independent power producers. He claimed that negotiations following that protest resulted in the closure of several power projects and new agreements that saved the national exchequer Rs3.36 trillion. He called for a review of the remaining independent power producers, arguing that negotiations could help bring down electricity costs within 12 to 18 months. Rehman also criticised the government over the country’s growing debt, taxes and electricity prices. He claimed Pakistan’s total debt had reached Rs98 trillion and urged authorities to reduce reliance on interest-based financing. He called for greater austerity in government spending and suggested limiting official vehicles to engines of up to 1,300cc. The JI emir also criticised what he described as excessive privileges for the political elite while ordinary citizens continued to face rising living costs and taxes. On provincial matters, Rehman accused successive governments in Sindh and Punjab of failing to resolve major economic and social problems. He also criticised Punjab’s education policy and raised concerns over the outsourcing of thousands of schools.
