Emilio Gay boosts England ahead of Pakistan Tests

BECKENHAM: England have received a timely boost ahead of their Test series against Pakistan, with opener Emilio Gay included in the Professional County Club Select XI squad for a three-day warm-up match.

Gay’s participation is encouraging news after the left-handed batter suffered a right shoulder injury while representing Durham against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup last week. He experienced discomfort early in his innings before aggravating the problem while playing a straight drive against Toby Roland-Jones.

The 26-year-old was forced to leave the field after scoring nine runs from 17 deliveries, raising concerns over his availability for England’s upcoming Test assignment. However, medical scans reportedly showed no serious damage, allowing Gay to return to competitive action as England assess his fitness.

The warm-up fixture at Beckenham was initially scheduled for four days but has been shortened to three following an agreement between the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Gay will feature alongside England Test squad members Shoaib Bashir and Matthew Fisher in the PCC Select XI. The match could provide England with an important opportunity to monitor Gay’s shoulder before the first Test.

Gay earned his place in England’s Test plans after an impressive run of form and made his international debut earlier this summer. His availability is particularly significant as England reshape their batting line-up following Ben Stokes’ retirement.

Bashir, meanwhile, remains highly regarded by England’s selectors despite limited recent county appearances. The young spinner may not feature in the Test XI, with England considering a four-seamer attack and relying on Dan Lawrence and Joe Root for occasional off-spin.

The PCC Select XI will be coached by England Under-19 head coach Mike Yardy, with the England Lions head-coach position currently vacant.

For England, Gay’s return offers a welcome sense of relief — but the warm-up match will reveal whether the opener is truly ready for the pressure of Test cricket against Pakistan.

Trump administration asks Congress for $87 billion…

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has asked Congress to approve nearly $87 billion in emergency funding as the United States faces mounting military costs linked to its escalating confrontation with Iran, according to American officials. The funding request was presented after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a classified briefing to lawmakers, outlining the financial and operational demands of the ongoing conflict. He later addressed members of a Senate committee, arguing that additional resources are essential to sustain military operations and protect US national security interests. During the briefing, Hegseth said the conflict with Iran has already cost the United States approximately $37.5 billion, reflecting the growing financial burden of extended military deployments, air operations and regional security missions. Warning lawmakers about the consequences of delaying the request, the defense secretary said failure to approve the funding would create what he described as one of the most serious security risks facing the country. He also rejected suggestions that Washington was responsible for the current crisis, insisting that Iran’s actions had driven the escalation. The administration’s request comes as military tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with both sides exchanging threats and continuing operations across the region. Analysts say the financial demands of the conflict are increasing as the United States seeks to maintain its military presence while supporting allies in the Middle East. Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that US funding allocated for military operations against Iran is being depleted at a rapid pace. The report suggested that continued operations without fresh congressional approval could place additional strain on defense resources and future military planning. The funding debate is expected to become a major issue on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers are likely to scrutinize both the size of the request and the administration’s broader strategy toward Iran. Some members of Congress are expected to seek greater clarity on military objectives, projected costs and the potential duration of the conflict before approving additional spending. Political observers say the request highlights the increasing economic impact of the confrontation, which is unfolding alongside rising concerns over global energy markets and regional stability. As Congress prepares to debate the proposal, the administration continues to argue that additional funding is necessary to maintain operational readiness and respond to evolving security challenges. The outcome of the request could play a significant role in shaping Washington’s military posture and diplomatic options in the weeks ahead.

Over one million evacuated as Typhoon Dolphin makes landfall in eastern China

More than one million people have been evacuated across eastern China following the landfall of Typhoon Dolphin, which struck Zhejiang province on Sunday evening packing maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h. The system slammed into Yuhuan before making a second landfall in Wenzhou shortly after, forcing emergency relocations and widespread transport shutdowns. Meteorological authorities downgraded Dolphin to a tropical storm on Monday morning, but critical warnings remain active for severe urban flooding, torrential downpours, and landslides across eastern provinces through Wednesday. The severe weather triggered massive transport disruptions, including the cancellation of 1,400 flights in Shanghai alone. In Wenzhou, officials relocated roughly 900,000 residents and opened over 1,000 emergency shelters, while Taizhou evacuated 390,000 people. In Shanghai, urban flooding submerged ground-floor businesses in high-traffic tourist areas, prompting major attractions like Disneyland and Legoland to halt operations. In Fujian province, maritime agencies suspended dozens of passenger ferry routes and shut down over 100 offshore construction projects. Search operations are underway in Wenling, Zhejiang, for a nine-year-old boy who remains missing after being swept into the sea. Chinese state media also confirmed the arrest of two individuals accused of fabricating and spreading AI-generated misinformation about storm casualties online. Before striking mainland China, the storm system intensified monsoon conditions across the region, causing eight deaths in the Philippines and injuring five elderly residents in Okinawa, Japan.

Initial report suggests Mir Raza Ali was shot from…

KARACHI: An initial medical report has reportedly indicated that businessman Mir Raza Ali sustained a gunshot wound from behind, while several signs of physical violence were also found on his body following his exhumation for a fresh post-mortem examination. According to investigation sources, the preliminary report has addressed all 14 questions raised by police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed during the medical examination. The findings reportedly include a gunshot injury to the rear of the body, fractured ribs and multiple injuries to Ali’s head and face. The report also noted marks of violence on different parts of the deceased’s body. However, investigators have yet to officially receive the medical findings. SSP SIU Samiullah Somroo, who is leading the police investigation, said the investigation team had not been informed about the report or its findings. The exhumation process lasted around three hours and was conducted under the supervision of forensic experts. During the procedure, 17 samples were collected from the body for further examination. Four samples were preserved for DNA testing, while the remaining samples were collected for chemical analysis. Two additional reference samples were obtained from Ali’s parents to assist with DNA matching. Investigators said the collected samples have been preserved and will be submitted to the forensic laboratory at the University of Karachi on Monday. The chemical and DNA examination reports are expected to be available within three to four days. Ali’s body was exhumed earlier as part of efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. After the medical examination was completed, his remains were reburied at a graveyard near Tariq Road. Ali, an IBA graduate and businessman, had returned home from his shop on the night of July 28. He later left the house again, telling his family that he would return within 10 minutes. He did not return, and his body was subsequently recovered from Gulistan-e-Jauhar. His father, Mir Hussain, has maintained that his son was murdered and rejected suggestions that he died by suicide. During the latest proceedings, members of the medical board collected various samples from Ali’s grave as part of the renewed examination. His family members and their lawyer, Jibran Nasir, were present at the graveyard, while a heavy police contingent was deployed to maintain security. The authorities had restored the original eight-member medical board responsible for supervising the exhumation after the family objected to the replacement of the panel with a five-member board. The disagreement had earlier prevented officials from carrying out the scheduled exhumation. Mir Hussain later said he was satisfied with the latest proceedings. He expressed hope that the fresh examination would provide clarity about what happened to his son. The family has also alleged that a fake audio recording attributed to Ali was circulated in an attempt to influence the case and create confusion around the circumstances of his death. The family’s lawyer had earlier raised concerns about changes to the medical board and questioned the decision to replace the original panel. He later said the family was satisfied with the renewed proceedings, which were conducted in the presence of the judicial magistrate, investigation officer and members of the medical team.

Ryan Gosling set to produce live-action Flintstones movie

Ryan Gosling is stepping into another major Hollywood project, this time entering the prehistoric world of one of animation’s most recognizable families. The Barbie star is reportedly in the early stages of developing a live-action movie based on The Flintstones for Warner Bros., with his Open Invite producing partner Jessie Henderson also attached to the project. The upcoming film is expected to offer a fresh take on the classic animated franchise rather than simply retelling the original story. According to reports, the project will center on Bamm-Bamm Rubble, the famously strong and energetic son of Barney and Betty Rubble. The character has been a memorable part of The Flintstones universe since the original animated series, and the new film could explore what his life looks like as an adult. While the project has generated interest because of Gosling’s involvement, it is still in the early development stage. The producers are currently looking for a writer who can shape the story and bring the concept to the big screen. No director or additional cast members have been confirmed at this stage, meaning many details about the live-action adaptation remain under wraps. Gosling’s involvement marks another ambitious addition to his growing list of Hollywood projects. Alongside his acting career, the 45-year-old actor has increasingly taken on producing responsibilities, including through his partnership with Henderson. Their next producing collaboration is Love of Your Life, a romantic drama directed by Rachel Morrison. The film is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month and is expected to attract attention as another major project from the pair. Meanwhile, Gosling also remains connected to the possibility of returning to the world of Barbie. Discussions surrounding a potential sequel to the hugely successful 2023 movie have reportedly been complicated by negotiations over compensation. The original film, directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, became a global phenomenon and featured Gosling alongside Margot Robbie. Although plans for a follow-up have reportedly faced delays, interest in another Barbie movie remains high. Gosling’s portrayal of Ken became one of the most talked-about aspects of the original film, earning him widespread praise and further establishing his versatility as an actor. Gosling has also had a successful year with Project Hail Mary, his major 2026 science-fiction release. The movie attracted audiences internationally and added another commercially successful title to his filmography. Its strong reception has only increased anticipation surrounding his future projects. With The Flintstones now reportedly entering development, Gosling appears set to continue exploring a wide range of genres and characters. A live-action story centered on an adult Bamm-Bamm could give the classic franchise a modern direction while introducing the beloved character to a new generation. However, fans will have to wait for further announcements before the project moves forward. With a writer still being sought and no official production timeline revealed, the live-action Flintstones movie remains in its early stages. If Gosling and Henderson succeed in bringing the concept together, the project could become another high-profile addition to Warner Bros.’ growing slate of franchise films.
