parents stress linked

Parents stress linked to giving children smartphones

Many parents give smartphones to their children and a major reason behind this behaviour has now been identified. Parents who experience stress tend to give their children devices to keep them occupied or calm while also being less likely to enforce limits on screen time.

A study conducted by the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University included 822 parents raising children between the ages of 4 and 8. The participants provided information through online surveys about their children’s behavior, parental stress and screen-time habits.

The findings showed that parents tend to allow their children to use smartphones for longer periods when their children’s behaviour becomes difficult to manage.

Researchers said parents should not hesitate to seek support for managing their own stress. They also advised parents to set limits on children’s screen time and provide them with purposeful, age-appropriate content.

They emphasized that parents should establish appropriate boundaries and spend quality time with their children to promote a healthy environment. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on children’s excessive smartphone use.

A study published in January 2026 explored links between online content and problems related to children’s development.

Similarly, research published in BMC Public Health in October 2024 found that spending excessive time in front of screens can have negative effects on mental health. The risk of depression, anxiety, irritability and other problems was particularly higher among children aged 9 and 10.

The research found that the more time children spent in front of screens, the more severe their symptoms of depression tended to be. According to the study, activities such as video chatting, watching videos and playing video games were associated with a greater increase in this risk.

  • Why you keep opening the fridge

Have you ever opened the fridge looked inside for a few seconds closed it without taking anything and then returned a short time later to do the same thing? If so you’re not alone. Psychologists say this habit is usually not caused by hunger.  Instead it is often linked to the way the brain responds to boredom routine and the search for something enjoyable. Experts explain that when people feel bored or mentally tired the brain looks for something that brings quick pleasure.  Foods high in sugar fat or salt can create a temporary feeling of comfort and satisfaction. As a result people may walk to the fridge without even realizing why. Opening the fridge can also become part of a daily routine. After spending time working on a computer or taking a short break many people automatically head to the kitchen even if they are not hungry. Another reason is curiosity. The brain hopes there might be something new or exciting inside such as a favorite dessert leftover food or a snack that was forgotten. Experts compare this behavior to checking a phone again and again for new messages even when you know there may not be any. Psychologists say habits often follow a simple pattern: a trigger a routine and a reward. For example feeling bored or finishing a task can trigger the habit of opening the fridge. Even if no food is eaten the action itself can provide a brief sense of interest or relief. People who work from home or spend long hours alone may be more likely to develop this habit because boredom can sometimes feel similar to hunger. Experts also say the environment plays an important role.  A bright kitchen a fridge that is easy to reach or food that is clearly visible can make people more likely to open the fridge. The next time you find yourself opening the fridge again, ask yourself one simple question “Am I really hungry or am I just looking for something to do?” According to psychologists the answer may surprise you.

  • AC mistake to avoid after heat

After spending time outside in extreme heat switching on the air conditioner as soon as you get home may feel refreshing. However health experts say this habit can sometimes be harmful. According to doctors the body works continuously to keep its temperature balanced. In hot weather it cools itself by producing sweat and widening blood vessels. If you suddenly move from intense heat into a very cold room your body experiences a rapid temperature change. This is known as thermal shock. Experts say this sudden change may cause headaches sore throat coughing dizziness tiredness breathing problems or a feeling of discomfort. People with asthma allergies or other breathing conditions may be affected more seriously. Health specialists recommend resting for a few minutes in a shaded or normally cooled area after coming home instead of sitting directly in front of the AC. This gives your body time to adjust gradually. They also advise drinking enough water before entering a very cold room. Hot weather can lead to dehydration and staying hydrated helps reduce stress on the body. Another concern is that air conditioners can dry out the air which may dry the nose and throat. This can lead to throat irritation dryness or coughing especially if the AC is set to a very low temperature or the cold air blows directly on the body. Doctors say there is no need to avoid using an air conditioner during summer. Instead keep the temperature at a comfortable level drink plenty of water and avoid moving straight from extreme heat into a very cold environment. These simple steps can help protect your health and reduce the risk of heat related problems.

You may have heard people say that going to the gym or lifting weights can stop your height from growing.  Because of this belief some young people avoid exercise and weight training. But is this really true?  Let’s find out. Going to the gym has become very popular among people who want to stay fit and healthy.  Some people exercise to lose weight while others want to gain muscle and strength. Gym workouts are especially popular among young people. However several myths about weight training still create confusion. One common myth is that going to the gym at a young age can stop height growth. This belief is especially common among teenagers and young people between 18 and 20 years old. Can weightlifting stop height growth? Many people believe that lifting heavy weights at a young age can prevent the body from growing taller especially when a person carries heavy weights on their shoulders. However there is no strong scientific evidence that normal strength training stops a person’s height from increasing.  Weightlifting itself does not automatically stop growth. However young people should be careful when doing heavy workouts.  Using too much weight or exercising with the wrong technique can cause injuries.  Younger people should learn proper form and when possible exercise under the guidance of a qualified trainer. What actually affects height? A person’s height is mainly influenced by genetics. Hormones nutrition sleep and overall lifestyle can also play a role in healthy growth.if the body does not produce certain growth related hormones properly it can affect normal development. Poor nutrition can also prevent the body from getting the nutrients it needs for healthy growth. The body also contains growth plates which are areas near the ends of certain bones that help bones grow longer during childhood and adolescence.  These growth plates naturally close as a person reaches physical maturity. Therefore going to the gym does not simply stop height growth.  A healthy diet proper exercise enough sleep and safe workout techniques are more important for overall growth and fitness.

  • The Disappearing Baloch Culture

Hani Rasheed Through the pages of your newspaper, I want to draw attention to the gradual disappearance of Baloch culture. We proudly call ourselves Baloch, but sadly, many of us are no longer following our own traditions, values and cultural practices. Our language, traditional dress, customs and respect for elders are slowly being replaced by modern influences. Modern life is not wrong, but forgetting our identity is a serious concern. Our culture is our history and a symbol of our identity. If we do not protect it today, future generations may know the word “Baloch” but forget the true meaning of Balochi culture. The government, schools and families should work together to promote Balochi language, traditions and cultural values. Young people should be encouraged to learn about their history and respect their cultural roots. I hope your newspaper will highlight this important issue and encourage people to protect our beautiful Baloch culture.
