Pakistan unveils five-year plan to revive hockey

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Mohiuddin Ahmad Wani has unveiled an ambitious three-to-five-year roadmap aimed at rebuilding Pakistan’s national sport from the grassroots level and restoring the country’s competitiveness on the international stage.

The plan comes at a difficult time for Pakistan hockey. The national team’s defeat against England in its opening match of the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup has once again raised questions about the sport’s decline and the team’s ability to compete with the world’s leading sides.

Wani said the federation wanted to move away from short-term decisions and instead build a sustainable system that could continuously produce quality players.

“Our priority is not just to win one tournament but to rebuild the entire hockey ecosystem,” he said.

Under the proposed system, young players would progress through school, district, provincial and national competitions before entering the senior setup. The PHF says the pathway will be based on merit, allowing talented players to rise through the ranks regardless of their background.

The federation also plans to draw lessons from successful hockey systems in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and India. Greater emphasis will be placed on modern coaching, professional training methods and improved infrastructure.

A major target is to increase the number of astro-turf facilities across Pakistan from the existing 52 to 100 within five years. The proposed facilities would not merely provide playing surfaces but also host coaching programmes, competitions and dedicated initiatives for women’s hockey.

Coaching is another key part of the roadmap. Local coaches are expected to receive advanced training with the assistance of foreign experts, while the national side would be given greater international exposure through overseas tours and visits by foreign teams to Pakistan.

The PHF also intends to improve financial incentives for players and provide clearer career opportunities, an important step toward encouraging talented youngsters to choose hockey as a long-term profession.

The roadmap envisages grassroots and infrastructure development during the first year, stronger academies and coaching programmes in the second, followed by a performance review in the third year.

Wani stressed that restoring Pakistan hockey would require sustained cooperation from governments, stakeholders and the public.

The challenge is formidable, but the PHF hopes its long-term approach can turn Pakistan’s once-dominant hockey tradition into a competitive future rather than another chapter of sporting nostalgia.

Information Ministry accuses Al Jazeera of biased …

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has accused international broadcaster Al Jazeera of presenting a misleading picture of the recently held Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, alleging that its coverage selectively portrayed the electoral process. In an official statement, the ministry said the broadcaster reported from selected polling stations in Muzaffarabad and relied on carefully chosen interviews and timings that did not accurately reflect the overall conduct of the elections. It claimed the reporting created a distorted impression of the voting process and failed to represent the broader electoral environment. The ministry further alleged that such coverage appeared aimed at undermining the credibility of the elections and ignoring what it described as the democratic will expressed by voters across the region. It maintained that the people of AJK had exercised their right to vote despite political tensions. Alongside its criticism of the coverage, the ministry reminded foreign media organisations operating in Pakistan that reporting assignments outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi require prior approval under the country’s External Publicity Guidelines. It urged all foreign correspondents to comply with the regulations governing reporting in other parts of the country. The AJK elections, however, remained under intense scrutiny after allegations of irregularities and isolated incidents of violence emerged during polling. Opposition parties accused authorities of interfering in the electoral process, while the ruling coalition exchanged allegations of rigging and misuse of state resources. Human rights organisations also expressed concern over reports of deaths and injuries linked to election-related unrest. They called for transparent and independent investigations into the incidents and stressed that maintaining public order should not come at the expense of fundamental rights, including peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. The elections were held against the backdrop of political unrest that has continued in AJK since last year’s protests over governance reforms and constitutional issues. The controversy surrounding reserved refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly also remained a major political issue during the campaign.

PARCO, Cnergyico lead $1bn refinery exports

Pakistan’s oil refining sector has achieved a major milestone. The country’s five major refineries exported petroleum products worth around $1.046 billion during the fiscal year 2025-26. This is the first time that the refinery sector has crossed the $1 billion export mark. The development has also strengthened the sector’s role as a source of foreign exchange for Pakistan. The achievement comes as the country continues to face pressure from a large trade deficit. Pakistan’s trade deficit is estimated at around $40 billion, increasing the importance of exports and import savings. The five major refineries made a significant contribution to the overall export earnings. Pakistan Arab Refinery Company (PARCO) recorded exports of around $277 million. Cnergyico Pakistan Limited exported petroleum products worth approximately $258 million. National Refinery Limited (NRL) recorded exports of around $238 million. Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) exported products worth approximately $200 million. Meanwhile, Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) exported petroleum products worth nearly $73 million. PARCO and Cnergyico remained the biggest contributors. Their combined exports reached approximately $535 million. This accounts for more than half of the total exports recorded by the five refineries. The development is particularly significant because the refining sector has traditionally been viewed mainly as a means of reducing Pakistan’s dependence on imported petroleum products. The latest figures show that the industry is increasingly contributing to both sides of the equation. It is helping reduce the import burden while also generating foreign exchange through exports. Cnergyico has also entered the global marine fuel market. The move could provide the company with new export opportunities and help expand Pakistan’s presence in the international fuel market. Industry modernization is expected to further improve the sector’s performance. Upgraded refinery facilities can increase production efficiency and enable companies to produce products that meet international market requirements. Further investment in refinery upgrades could therefore lead to higher exports in the coming years. It could also increase savings on petroleum imports. The latest performance highlights the growing importance of Pakistan’s refining industry. With continued modernization, better efficiency and access to international markets, the sector could become an increasingly important source of foreign exchange for the country. The development also comes at a critical time for Pakistan’s economy. Higher exports and lower import dependence are essential for reducing pressure on the country’s external account.

Aamir Muqam invites Rawalakot sit-in leaders for d…

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Aamir Muqam has extended an offer of dialogue to protesters staging a sit-in in Rawalakot, urging demonstrators to engage in peaceful negotiations while distancing the federal government from recent controversial remarks about the region. Speaking during a televised interview, Muqam said the people of Rawalakot have always been, and will continue to remain, Kashmiris, emphasizing their historical identity and longstanding contributions to Pakistan. “The people of Rawalakot are Kashmiris, have always been Kashmiris, and will remain Kashmiris,” the minister said, stressing that the government values the sacrifices made by the residents of Poonch and other parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. His remarks came amid growing political tensions following comments attributed to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, which sparked criticism and prompted strong reactions from political leaders and residents in the region. Muqam clarified that Khawaja Asif’s statement reflected his personal opinion and should not be interpreted as the official position of either the federal government or the ruling party. “The statement does not represent government policy,” he said, adding that the people of Rawalakot had rendered immense sacrifices for Pakistan during critical periods of history and deserved respect and recognition. Addressing the ongoing sit-in, the minister appealed to protesters to choose dialogue over confrontation. He said the government believes the majority of those participating in the demonstration are patriotic citizens with genuine concerns rather than individuals pursuing unlawful objectives. “I do not consider everyone at the sit-in to be terrorists,” Muqam said. “Most participants are loyal Pakistanis. They should distance themselves from elements with negative agendas and come forward for meaningful talks.” The minister reiterated the government’s willingness to resolve issues through negotiations, saying constructive engagement remained the most effective path toward restoring calm and addressing public grievances. His appeal comes as authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation in Rawalakot, where demonstrations have drawn national attention amid heightened political debate and security concerns. Political observers believe Muqam’s conciliatory tone signals an effort by the federal government to ease tensions and prevent further escalation through dialogue rather than confrontation. His reassurance regarding the identity and sacrifices of the people of Rawalakot is also being viewed as an attempt to rebuild trust following the controversy surrounding recent public statements. The government’s next steps, including any formal negotiations with protest representatives, are expected to shape developments in the coming days as officials seek a peaceful resolution to the standoff.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Château Miraval …

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s former French estate, Château Miraval, has reportedly escaped damage despite dangerous wildfires burning in parts of southern France. According to TMZ, smoke was seen rising near the famous winery on Friday as firefighters continued battling fast-moving blazes across the region. While the sight of thick smoke sparked concern among fans, aerial images reportedly showed no visible damage to the historic property. Authorities have continued to monitor the situation as changing weather conditions keep the fire risk high. (tmz.com) Château Miraval, located in the Provence region of southern France, has remained in the spotlight for years because of both its award-winning rosé wine and the ongoing legal dispute between Jolie and Pitt over ownership of the estate. The former couple purchased the property together in 2011 and married there in 2014 before separating two years later. Since then, Miraval has become a central issue in their lengthy legal battle. (apnews.com) The latest concern comes as southern France faces another challenging wildfire season. High temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds have fueled several fires across the region, prompting emergency responses and temporary evacuations in affected communities. Firefighters have been working around the clock to contain the flames and protect homes, forests and historic landmarks. (reuters.com) Although smoke was visible near Château Miraval, reports indicate that the estate itself has not suffered any confirmed structural damage. Emergency crews have continued monitoring the area to ensure the fire does not spread closer to the property. Officials have also urged residents and visitors to follow safety instructions as weather conditions remain unpredictable. (tmz.com) Beyond the immediate wildfire threat, Miraval continues to attract attention because of the legal fight between Jolie and Pitt. In recent years, the former spouses have exchanged lawsuits over Jolie’s sale of her stake in the winery to the Stoli Group’s wine division, with Pitt arguing that the sale violated an earlier agreement. The dispute remains unresolved and has become one of Hollywood’s most closely watched legal battles. (apnews.com) For now, the focus has shifted from the courtroom to the safety of the estate and surrounding communities. The apparent lack of damage to Château Miraval has come as welcome news, but officials warn that wildfire conditions can change rapidly. As firefighters continue their efforts across southern France, the situation remains fluid. While Miraval appears to have avoided harm, authorities say continued vigilance is essential until the fires are fully contained. The incident serves as another reminder of the growing impact of extreme wildfire seasons across Europe and the importance of protecting both communities and cultural landmarks.
