Upper Dir battles massive cholera outbreak as case…

PESHAWAR: A major cholera outbreak has struck several areas of Upper Dir in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, infecting more than 3,000 people and placing severe pressure on local healthcare facilities, officials said on Saturday. The outbreak has affected multiple localities, including Ashirai Dara, Sharingal, Barawal and Dir Khas, where a large number of residents have reported symptoms associated with the waterborne disease. According to Dr. Sahibzada Imtiaz, Medical Superintendent of the District Headquarters Hospital in Upper Dir, the number of cholera patients has risen rapidly over the past few days. He said more than 3,000 people, including women and children, have been infected since the outbreak began. Hospital authorities revealed that 600 patients were admitted in a single day, highlighting the alarming pace at which the disease is spreading. The influx of patients has overwhelmed the District Headquarters Hospital, leaving medical staff under immense pressure. Doctors said several patients remain in critical condition and are being shifted to other healthcare facilities for specialized treatment because the main hospital has reached full capacity. In response to the health emergency, teams from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department have been dispatched to the affected districts. Public health officials are conducting field inspections, monitoring the spread of the disease and working to improve access to safe drinking water. Authorities are also testing local water sources to identify possible contamination, as cholera is commonly spread through polluted water and poor sanitation. Health experts have urged residents to drink only boiled or purified water, maintain proper hygiene and seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe diarrhea, vomiting or dehydration. They stressed that early treatment can significantly reduce the risk of serious complications. The outbreak has raised concerns about public health infrastructure in remote areas, where limited access to clean water and medical services can accelerate the spread of infectious diseases. Officials say emergency response efforts will continue until the situation is brought under control and further infections are prevented.

Katy Perry, Justin Trudeau share pint in cozy summer snapshot

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau were spotted sharing a casual pint together, appearing in high spirits as the former Canadian prime minister looked back on his summer highlights. Trudeau, 54, posted a montage on Instagram on Friday, capturing key moments from the past few weeks. Among the images was a warm photo of him and Perry, 41, smiling together over drinks. The post also featured a photo from his meetup with Michelle and Barack Obama, along with a picture from his daughter Ella-Grace’s graduation. A family holiday snapshot rounded out the collection. In his caption, Trudeau expressed gratitude for the memorable moments and the people who made the summer feel special to him. The post came shortly after the couple was spotted arriving at a private airport in Olbia, Italy, adding yet another stop to their ongoing travels together. Trudeau and Perry have now been together for more than a year. Dating rumours first surfaced after they were seen dining together in Montreal last July. After roughly six months of speculation, the pair confirmed their relationship publicly on Instagram in December. Since then, they’ve made several joint public appearances. Earlier this summer, the couple made their red carpet debut together at the 25th Annual Tribeca Festival. They also attended the premiere of Perry’s concert film, “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris.” Speaking about the relationship at that event, Perry told PEOPLE she feels far more grounded across many areas of her life these days. She described herself as being very much in love. She added that the concert film’s premiere took place after she’d already met the person she now calls the love of her life. According to Perry, that connection left her feeling far more anchored, especially given how easily she can otherwise feel scattered. Perry was previously in a long-term relationship with actor Orlando Bloom for nine years. The former couple, who share five-year-old daughter Daisy, ended their relationship in the middle of last year.

Romania shuts final nuclear reactor as severe Danube drought forces emergency energy measures

Romania has completed a full shutdown of its Cernavoda nuclear power plant after severe drought dropped water levels in the Danube River to historic lows. The plant, which relies on the Danube for cooling and typically provides 20% of the country’s electricity generation, took its second reactor offline following the prior closure of its first reactor in late July. State operator Nuclearelectrica stated that the second reactor was shut down due to the ongoing drop in water levels, with no restart anticipated for at least ten days. To mitigate the energy shortfall, Romania declared a state of emergency for August, activated a 330-megawatt lignite-fired power plant, and requested that major industrial consumers and households curb power use during peak hours. Major automakers including Dacia and Ford have paused domestic production to help conserve power. The total shutdown immediately threatens energy security in neighbouring Moldova, which relies on Romanian imports to cover up to 60% of its electricity deficits. Moldovan authorities warned of potential rolling power cuts if alternative supplies cannot be secured from Ukraine or Western Europe. Across Europe, low river levels have similarly forced nuclear output reductions in France and triggered emergency engineering interventions in Hungary.

79th Independence Day ignites nationwide patriotic…

Independence Day celebrations were held across Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, with political leaders, judges and government officials highlighting national unity, development, democracy and the sacrifices made for Pakistan. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, in her Independence Day message, said the occasion was a day for the younger generation to renew its commitment to the country’s future. She said she wanted to see young people equipped with books, pens and laptops, stressing that genuine development would only be achieved when no section of society was left behind. Lahore High Court Chief Justice Justice Aalia Neelum, addressing a flag-hoisting ceremony, said love for the homeland was part of faith. She said every citizen had a responsibility to work tirelessly for the country’s progress and added that the Punjab judiciary was striving to ensure the effective delivery of justice. Independence Day celebrations were also held at King Edward Medical University in Lahore. Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique attended the ceremony as chief guest, cut the Independence Day cake and led prayers for the country’s security and prosperity. He said every citizen must play a role in Pakistan’s development. A flag-hoisting ceremony was also organised at the Sports Board Punjab. The secretary sports, director general sports and other officials and employees attended the event. The national flag was hoisted and participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Pakistan. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said Independence Day should also serve as an opportunity to reflect on the objectives and sacrifices behind the creation of Pakistan. He said the country was established in 1947 on the principles of unity, discipline and firm faith, but 79 years later the nation had still not fully achieved national cohesion. Fazlur Rehman called for overcoming regional, linguistic and group-based divisions and urged people to move forward as one Pakistani nation. He said the objectives of Pakistan’s creation included an Islamic system, a prosperous economy and stable democracy. Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said Pakistan was created on the basis of the Two-Nation Theory but the country had yet to fully realise the objectives for which it was established. He criticised successive governments for making people’s lives difficult and said the implementation of the Quran and Sunnah was essential to achieving Pakistan’s true destination. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi hoisted the national flag at Governor House. Iran’s Consul General Ali Banafsheh Khah also attended the ceremony. Prayers were offered for Pakistan’s development, prosperity and stability, while Kundi and the Iranian consul general jointly cut the cake marking the country’s 79th Independence Day. K-P Adviser on Finance Muzammil Aslam said the province had witnessed significant improvements and called for greater efforts to strengthen the region. He said the provincial government had faced serious financial difficulties when it took office but the situation had subsequently improved. Aslam said officials should set clear targets for what they wanted to achieve before the next Independence Day. He also stressed the need for collective efforts to eliminate terrorism from the province. K-P Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah said the objectives behind the creation of Pakistan would be fulfilled. He said the people would not hesitate to make sacrifices for the country and would continue working towards its progress and stability. Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja also congratulated the nation on Independence Day. She paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending the country and described the armed forces as guarantors of peace and development. She said Pakistan’s growing international standing reflected the efforts of its political and military leadership. According to her, Pakistan is increasingly recognised globally for its commitment to peace, development, defence and its vision of a digital future.

Kristen Stewart’s video misused to spread false claims about Robert Pattinson reunion

A clip of Kristen Stewart is making rounds online. It comes with a caption falsely claiming she wants to rekindle things with ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson. The caption even suggests she would leave her spouse to make that happen. The video itself is from an old interview. In it, Stewart discusses something entirely unrelated to Pattinson. She talks about the value of public embarrassment. She says she considers herself lucky to have had moments of falling flat on her face publicly. A healthy dose of humiliation, she adds, keeps a person grounded. Despite this, the clip was recirculated with a fabricated caption. It claims Stewart broke down in tears, confessing that cheating on Pattinson remains her biggest regret. The caption alleges she still thinks about him. It even claims she’d divorce her husband for one more chance at being with him. The claim falls apart quickly. For starters, Stewart is not married to a husband at all. She came out publicly as gay in February 2017. In April 2025, she married screenwriter Dylan Meyer. The two have since spoken openly about their relationship. Recent interviews show Stewart in a happy place, both personally and professionally. She has collaborated with Meyer on creative projects, while continuing to focus on her work behind the camera as a director. Friends close to the couple have described their marriage as steady, with both partners actively supporting one another’s careers. The misleading video appears to be piggybacking on an old, real story from Stewart’s past. Back in 2012, she publicly apologized after being caught in an affair with Rupert Sanders. Sanders directed her in Snow White and the Huntsman. At the time, Stewart was still in a relationship with Pattinson. She addressed the situation publicly and expressed sincere regret. That moment became widely publicized and has followed her in tabloid coverage for years since. Nothing in her recent interviews or public statements supports the idea that she wants to reunite with Pattinson. There is also no indication of her considering ending her marriage over it. The viral claim appears to be a case of an old clip stripped of context, then paired with an entirely invented narrative to drive engagement. Such recycled clips are a common tactic online, where old footage is repurposed with misleading captions to spark outrage or attract clicks, often at the expense of the public figure’s actual words and intent.
