ML-1 project review to be completed by October 30

An important meeting regarding the ML-1 project was held under the chairmanship of Chairman Pakistan Railways Syed Mazhar Ali Shah. International design consultants, review consultants, and senior officers of Pakistan Railways attended the meeting.

The meeting reviewed in detail various matters related to the upgradation of the Karachi-Rohri section. Discussions were also held on the project’s preparation, progress, and future course of action.

Chairman Pakistan Railways directed that the review phase of the ML-1 project be completed by October 30, 2026. He also directed that the progress of the project be continuously monitored and reviewed on a weekly basis.

It was decided that the second phase of market consultation for the ML-1 project will commence on September 8, 2026. The second phase will include detailed consultations with market experts and relevant stakeholders on project preparation, technical matters, and the way forward.

Pakistan Railways will benefit from market proposals, international experience, and expert opinions to make the ML-1 project more effective, modern, and viable. The principles of merit, transparency, and competitiveness will be ensured at every stage of the project’s preparation and implementation.

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi expressed satisfaction over the progress on the ML-1 project and said that ML-1 is the foundation for the development and modernization of Pakistan Railways and for meeting future requirements. The upgradation of the project will significantly improve train speeds, passenger facilities, and the overall performance of Pakistan Railways.

The Federal Minister said that the ML-1 project would be further strengthened and made more effective in light of the best proposals and expert opinions. He emphasized that merit, transparency, and competitiveness are of fundamental importance to the project and that there would be no compromise on these principles.

Muhammad Hanif Abbasi said that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is taking a keen interest in the ML-1 project and has directed that it be completed within the stipulated timeframe. The Prime Minister is also continuously monitoring progress on the project.

The Federal Minister for Railways said that, in view of the progress made so far, the prospects for the commencement of Pakistan Railways’ flagship ML-1 project this year are bright. The government is taking all necessary measures to make ML-1 the foundation of a modern, safe, high-speed, and efficient railway system in the country.

    A senior doctor at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has asked to step down from her responsibilities amid controversy surrounding the death of a 65-year-old patient who was shifted from the hospital’s emergency department to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) on July 28. Dr Sanobar Sikandar, JPMC’s only senior emergency medicine specialist, submitted a request to the hospital’s Executive Director seeking relief from her duties as an assistant professor of medicine. She cited mounting professional pressure, internal interference and what she described as an unhealthy working environment. Dr Sanobar said the hospital administration criticised her after asking her to explain the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death. She said the situation had made it increasingly difficult for her to continue managing her medical, teaching and administrative responsibilities effectively. In her application, she highlighted what she described as a lack of professional respect in the emergency department, political interference and inappropriate conduct by some junior doctors. She said these issues had caused her severe mental stress and made it difficult to continue working under the prevailing conditions. The Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh has backed Dr Sanobar and urged the JPMC administration to address the dispute immediately. YDA Sindh Chairman Dr Mehboob Noonari said Dr Sanobar is the hospital’s only FCPS assistant professor in emergency medicine. He noted that she also serves as faculty for the FCPS programme and supervises trainee doctors. Dr Noonari warned that her departure could seriously disrupt emergency medicine training at JPMC and may even put the FCPS programme at risk of closure. He also alleged that the administration was pressuring Dr Sanobar to protect the doctor who was in charge of the night shift when the incident occurred. He questioned why the night-shift in-charge was being shielded and demanded that hospital authorities clarify the matter. The YDA chairman further claimed that senior doctors had questioned Dr Sanobar over her decision to issue an explanation regarding the patient’s death, raising concerns about the handling of the case within the hospital.

The incident occurred near Godam Chowk, where the affected family members reportedly became ill after drinking tea. According to the family, a dead lizard was later discovered inside the teapot, raising concerns that it may have contaminated the drink. Rescue personnel reached the scene and provided initial medical assistance to the victims. Following a preliminary examination, all five patients were shifted to Nishtar Hospital for further treatment. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine how the lizard ended up in the teapot.

    ATC remands Mushtaq Ahmad for three days

    ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Monday granted police a three-day physical remand of former senator Mushtaq Ahmad and his associate, Daniyal, in a case linked to a protest over the recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The suspects were presented before Duty Judge Rukhsanda Shaheen after their arrest. During the hearing, the prosecution requested a 30-day physical remand, arguing that investigators needed additional time to recover a vehicle and alleged weapons connected to the case. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a three-day remand instead of the longer period requested by the prosecution and directed police to continue their investigation. The case has been registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the protest and the allegations associated with it. The development comes days after Mushtaq Ahmad’s supporters claimed he had been detained for more than 24 hours after security personnel stopped him from entering Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to his team, the detention was linked to his public support for protests taking place in the region. Following his release, Mushtaq Ahmad addressed a press conference in Islamabad, where he announced plans to hold a condolence, solidarity and peace gathering in support of the people of AJK. He invited students, journalists, civil society members and Kashmiri residents of Islamabad to participate in the event at F-10 Markaz. Earlier, Mushtaq Ahmad had stated that he was travelling to AJK carrying white flags as a symbol of peace and solidarity with families affected by the recent violence. He said security officials stopped him at Azad Pattan Bridge and prevented him from entering the region, after which he recorded a protest message and began returning to Islamabad. His team further alleged that Punjab Police later intercepted his vehicle in Kahuta and took him into custody.

    Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has highlighted the key provisions of the landmark Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, stressing that any external armed attack on Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or Türkiye will be considered an attack on all three countries. Dar said the agreement, signed in Makkah Mukarramah on 7 August 2026, reflects the depth of the brotherly relations between the three nations and is the culmination of years of consultations and strategic coordination. Under the accord, an external armed attack against any one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all, consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. The Foreign Minister stressed that the agreement is purely defensive in nature and is not directed against any country. He said the accord is intended to strengthen cooperation in confronting shared peace and security challenges while promoting regional stability and prosperity. Dar also clarified that the Makkah Accord does not replace or abrogate any existing bilateral or multilateral agreements between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, or their agreements with other countries and international organisations. Another significant provision, he said, is that the agreement remains open to other countries in the region willing to uphold its fundamental principles and resolve differences through mutual respect, cooperation and peaceful means. Dar reaffirmed that the agreement is consistent with Pakistan’s foreign policy and said Islamabad would continue working with all brotherly countries towards lasting peace and stability. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and to building a more secure, stable and prosperous future for the peoples of the region.

    Six non-local workers killed in Kech

    Six non-local workers have been killed by militants linked to Fitna al-Hindustan in the Nasirabad area of Kech district, Balochistan, according to security sources. The sources said militants initially abducted six workers and killed another worker, identified as Javed, on July 27. The attackers later killed all six abducted workers, bringing the total number of victims in the incident to seven. The deceased workers have been identified as Muhammad Arshad, Muhammad Taimur, Muhammad Parvez, Muhammad Wazir, Muhammad Amjad and Muhammad Yahya. According to security officials, four of the victims came from Punjab, while two belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The workers had reportedly been employed on development projects in Balochistan. Their deaths have raised fresh concerns about the security of workers from outside the province who travel to Balochistan for employment and infrastructure projects. Security sources also recalled a separate incident in Mashkel, Balochistan, where militants recently killed five non-local workers. The victims in that attack were also reportedly working on development-related projects. The latest killings come amid continued security challenges in parts of Balochistan, where militants have repeatedly targeted civilians, security personnel and workers involved in development activities. Security forces have been conducting operations against militant groups in various parts of the province.
