Six non-local workers killed in Kech

Six non-local workers have been killed by militants linked to Fitna al-Hindustan in the Nasirabad area of Kech district, Balochistan, according to security sources.

The sources said militants initially abducted six workers and killed another worker, identified as Javed, on July 27. The attackers later killed all six abducted workers, bringing the total number of victims in the incident to seven.

The deceased workers have been identified as Muhammad Arshad, Muhammad Taimur, Muhammad Parvez, Muhammad Wazir, Muhammad Amjad and Muhammad Yahya. According to security officials, four of the victims came from Punjab, while two belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The workers had reportedly been employed on development projects in Balochistan. Their deaths have raised fresh concerns about the security of workers from outside the province who travel to Balochistan for employment and infrastructure projects.

Security sources also recalled a separate incident in Mashkel, Balochistan, where militants recently killed five non-local workers. The victims in that attack were also reportedly working on development-related projects.

The latest killings come amid continued security challenges in parts of Balochistan, where militants have repeatedly targeted civilians, security personnel and workers involved in development activities. Security forces have been conducting operations against militant groups in various parts of the province.

Barrister Saif calls for new provinces, governance…

PESHAWAR: Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Adviser Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif has called for the creation of additional administrative provinces, saying Pakistan needs major structural reforms to improve governance and public service delivery. In a statement issued on Sunday, Saif said the proposal to establish new provinces should be taken seriously, arguing that the existing administrative framework is no longer capable of addressing the growing needs of the population efficiently. He said discussions alone would not bring meaningful change and urged the federal government to move beyond proposals by initiating practical measures for administrative restructuring. According to him, governance can only improve if reforms are implemented instead of remaining limited to public debate. Saif maintained that decision-making authority is concentrated within a small section of the bureaucracy, which limits administrative efficiency and delays the resolution of public issues. He stressed that a more balanced distribution of powers would strengthen governance and improve accountability. He said Pakistan requires comprehensive administrative reforms that would transfer greater authority to lower levels of government. Establishing new provinces, he added, would bring the government closer to the people, improve access to public services and ensure faster responses to local challenges. The former adviser also highlighted the importance of an effective local government system, saying empowered local bodies are essential for addressing citizens’ problems at the grassroots level. He argued that decentralisation and stronger local institutions would enhance transparency, improve service delivery and promote sustainable development across the country.

Judge walks out after uproar in Aleema case

RAWALPINDI: An anti-terrorism court judge in Rawalpindi left the courtroom after expressing anger over repeated disruptions during the hearing of a case against PTI founder Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan. The case relates to a case registered over the November 26 protest. The hearing turned tense when the prosecution began questioning Aleema Khan and her witness about property-related matters. During the proceedings, prosecutor Zaheer Shah questioned Aleema Khan’s witness, Fatahullah Barky, about whether he was aware of alleged properties owned by Aleema Khan abroad. Defence lawyer Faisal Malik immediately objected. He argued that the question was not relevant to the case being heard by the court. The prosecutor then questioned Aleema Khan directly about alleged properties in Dubai and New Jersey. Aleema Khan rejected the allegations. She said she did not own any illegal property. She maintained that the properties had been described as benami assets in an earlier legal dispute. The prosecutor then asked whether the Supreme Court had imposed a fine on her in connection with the alleged benami properties. Aleema Khan replied that former chief justice Saqib Nisar had issued a decision that, according to her, was contrary to the law. She further claimed that a tribunal later cleared her in the matter. The prosecutor also asked whether she had paid a Rs30 million fine following the Supreme Court’s orders.Aleema Khan said that Rs29.4 million had been deposited. She added that the tribunal subsequently cleared her. During the hearing, Aleema Khan asked the court to record her statement. The court began recording her statement. However, the defence counsel raised another objection. The repeated objections and arguments created a noisy situation inside the courtroom. Judge Amjad Ali Shah expressed strong displeasure over the disruption. He questioned the defence counsel over the objection and said that if the accused wanted her statement recorded, there was no reason for the court not to record it.The judge’s remarks came as arguments continued between the prosecution and defence. The proceedings were subsequently disrupted and the hearing was adjourned.Further proceedings in the case will take place on a later date. The hearing highlighted tensions between the prosecution and defence over the relevance of questions being asked during the proceedings

Pakistan turns 79, leaders call for unity, reform …

ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day on Friday, the country’s civilian and military leadership delivered a common message: the sacrifices that created Pakistan must now be matched by unity, institutional reform, economic progress and opportunities for its people. Independence Day celebrations began across the country with traditional ceremonies. A 31-gun salute was held in Islamabad, while 21-gun salutes were fired at provincial headquarters. At the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi, a change-of-guards ceremony was also held to honour the founder of Pakistan. The messages issued by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the armed forces focused not only on Pakistan’s past but also on the challenges shaping its future. Zardari urges reforms and investment in youth In his Independence Day message, President Zardari paid tribute to the leaders of the Pakistan Movement and millions who made sacrifices for an independent homeland. He described independence as more than a historic achievement, saying each generation had a responsibility to strengthen the country and build on the work of those who came before. Reflecting on the country’s security challenges, the president said the events surrounding last year’s Marka-i-Haq had demonstrated Pakistan’s desire for peace as well as its determination to defend its sovereignty and national interests. He also paid tribute to members of the armed forces, police and law enforcement agencies who had lost their lives while protecting the country. The president stressed that Pakistan’s security was closely connected with peace in the region. He said the country would continue using diplomatic channels to encourage dialogue, reduce tensions and support regional stability. But the strongest part of his message centred on domestic development. Zardari called for economic, social and governance reforms, better education, stronger skills development and greater opportunities for young people. He said Pakistan’s youth represented the country’s greatest strength and that investment in their education and abilities would ultimately determine the nation’s future. For ordinary citizens, he noted, national progress should be visible in everyday life — through better education and healthcare, employment opportunities and greater economic security for families, farmers, workers and businesses. PM Shehbaz highlights economic progress Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called for national unity while highlighting what he described as economic achievements made during the past two-and-a-half years. He said Pakistan had navigated difficult circumstances and moved towards economic stability, while remittances from overseas Pakistanis had risen by $11.3 billion over two years. The prime minister identified information technology, innovation, industrial and agricultural development, employment creation, education and skills training as key priorities for the government. He also praised the armed forces for their role during Marka-i-Haq and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its national interests, including its water resources. Shehbaz pointed to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye as evidence of Pakistan’s growing strategic importance. He also reiterated Islamabad’s support for the people of occupied Kashmir and Palestine, while calling for diplomatic solutions to regional disputes. Military leadership calls for unity Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu also issued Independence Day messages. According to ISPR, the armed forces paid tribute to Jinnah, the country’s martyrs, veterans, law enforcement personnel and citizens who had served Pakistan. The military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the Constitution and protecting national interests. The message also stressed that Pakistan’s real strength lay in the unity and collective determination of its people. As the green and white flags filled streets, buildings and homes across the country, the leadership’s messages offered a reminder that Independence Day is not only about remembering 1947. It is also about asking what Pakistan can become in the years ahead — a country where security is matched by stability, economic growth by opportunity, and national strength by better lives for its people. The shared call from the leadership was clear: unity, discipline and meaningful reform must turn the promise of independence into progress for every Pakistani.
