PTI’s Akmal Khan Bari moves LHC over police hara…

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Akmal Khan Bari has approached the Lahore High Court (LHC), accusing the Punjab Police of political victimisation and unlawful harassment, while seeking constitutional protection for himself and his family against what he alleges are repeated illegal actions by law enforcement authorities.

The constitutional petition was filed through senior lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa, with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab and other relevant officials named as respondents. The petition urges the court to intervene, alleging that police actions have exceeded legal limits and infringed upon the petitioner’s constitutional rights.

According to the plea, police officials allegedly raided Akmal Khan Bari’s residence at around 10:00 p.m. on July 27. The petitioner claims that officers entered the premises without lawful justification and subjected his family members to intimidation and harassment during the late-night operation.

The petition further states that Bari had previously been arrested in what he describes as a fabricated criminal case. It argues that the latest police action is part of a broader pattern of political victimisation aimed at pressuring him because of his affiliation with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The petitioner maintains that no criminal allegation currently justifies repeated police raids or coercive measures against him or his family. He contends that such actions violate the fundamental rights guaranteed under Pakistan’s Constitution, including the rights to personal liberty, dignity, privacy, and equal protection before the law.

According to the petition, law enforcement agencies are legally bound to operate within the framework of the Constitution and cannot exercise their authority arbitrarily or for political purposes. It alleges that the conduct of the respondents is mala fide, unlawful, and inconsistent with constitutional safeguards designed to protect citizens from abuse of power.

Bari has requested the Lahore High Court to issue directions restraining the Punjab Police and other respondents from taking any unlawful coercive action against him. He has also sought specific orders preventing police officials from harassing, intimidating, or interfering with members of his family.

Additionally, the petition asks the court to direct all respondents to perform their duties strictly in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws, ensuring that no individual is subjected to harassment without legal grounds.

The Lahore High Court is expected to take up the constitutional petition for preliminary proceedings, where it will determine whether notices should be issued to the respondents and what further legal steps, if any, are warranted. The Punjab Police had not issued an official response to the allegations at the time this report was filed.

Screwworm spreads in Mexico, raising alarm across …

MEXICO CITY: A dangerous flesh-eating parasite known as the New World screwworm is spreading through parts of Mexico and Central America, with hundreds of human infections reported and growing concern over its potential impact on livestock and animal health. The parasite is the larval stage of a particular fly. Unlike ordinary flies, the female screwworm fly can lay eggs in open wounds or vulnerable areas of living animals and humans. The eggs can hatch within about a day, after which the larvae enter the wound and feed on living tissue. The infection, known as myiasis, can become severe if treatment is delayed. In serious cases, the larvae can damage muscles and even reach deeper tissues and bones. A study published in a medical journal linked to US health authorities examined 202 confirmed human cases recorded in Mexico between April 2025 and March 2026. Researchers found that reported infections increased sharply, rising from roughly three cases a week in 2025 to more than nine cases a week during 2026. More than half of the patients examined had infections involving their legs. Other cases affected the head, neck, nose, mouth and eyes, highlighting the parasite’s ability to invade different parts of the body through wounds or vulnerable tissue. The study reported six deaths among the patients examined, although researchers directly linked only one of those deaths to screwworm infection. The average age of patients was about 61, while 72 per cent were men. Researchers also found that 77 per cent of those infected had at least one pre-existing medical condition, potentially increasing their vulnerability to complications. The parasite is considered particularly dangerous for livestock because its larvae feed on living tissue. Untreated infections can cause serious wounds, weaken animals and, in severe cases, prove fatal. The resurgence has also raised concerns in the United States. The country had previously eliminated the New World screwworm after decades of control efforts, achieving eradication in 1966. However, the parasite returned to the spotlight after an infected calf was confirmed in Texas’s Zavala County in June 2026, according to international reports. The development has heightened fears that the parasite could spread further north, particularly through livestock movement and other routes. Health and agricultural authorities face the difficult task of controlling the parasite while detecting infections early. For people, experts generally stress the importance of seeking medical attention for unusual or worsening wounds, particularly after exposure in areas where screwworm is circulating. The outbreak serves as a reminder that a tiny insect can create a major public-health and agricultural challenge when conditions allow a dangerous parasite to spread.

Sohail Afridi says KP Police, CTD key to restoring…

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said that lasting peace in the province can only be ensured by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), stressing that no other force can replace their role in maintaining law and order. Speaking to reporters after visiting those injured in the recent explosion in Swat, the chief minister said peace is a shared responsibility and a common need for every citizen. He added that all political parties, religious groups, and people from different schools of thought are united in their desire to restore peace across the province. Afridi said the provincial government remains fully committed to its security policy and will implement it without compromise. He urged the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stand together in support of peace and stability. He praised the sacrifices made by the provincial police and said the government is providing the force with all the resources it needs to combat terrorism and maintain security. According to the chief minister, more than Rs35 billion has been allocated to strengthen police infrastructure, modern equipment, and operational capacity. He maintained that the KP Police and CTD have the experience, capability, and commitment required to tackle security challenges and said no third party could establish peace in the province more effectively than these institutions. The chief minister said peace is essential for economic growth and public prosperity, adding that development cannot take place without a secure environment. He reaffirmed that strengthening law enforcement agencies remains one of the provincial government’s top priorities. Commenting on national politics, Afridi criticised the federal government, claiming it came to power through what he described as a “Form 47 mandate.” He urged the federal leadership to focus on addressing its own governance and economic challenges instead of criticising the provincial government. He also alleged that Rs5 trillion had been paid under the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) framework and claimed that the country’s economic indicators, including GDP growth, were declining.

Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem join students at Delhi protest

Actors Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem visited the ongoing student protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi during the early hours of Thursday, expressing support for demonstrators calling for accountability over alleged irregularities in the country’s education system. The sibling duo was accompanied by actor Rachit Singh as they walked alongside students who have been camping at the protest site for weeks. The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging misconduct and irregularities linked to the NEET examination process. Videos circulating on social media showed the actors arriving at the protest around 2:13 a.m. Huma, dressed casually in a black top and blue jeans, was seen interacting with protesters and walking through the gathering with a smile. Rachit Singh, wearing a white shirt, stayed close to her, while Saqib Saleem was also spotted joining the march and speaking with students. The visit quickly drew attention online, with many social media users praising the actors for showing solidarity with the students during the late-night demonstration. Others viewed their presence as a significant show of support from members of the film industry for a movement that has continued to gain momentum across the country. Huma and Rachit recently collaborated on the film Baby Do Die Do, which was produced by Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem under their production banner. Their appearance together at the protest marked an unexpected reunion, this time in support of a public cause rather than a film project. The student demonstrations, reportedly led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), have expanded to several cities in recent weeks. Protesters have continued to demand greater transparency and accountability regarding the alleged examination irregularities, while urging authorities to address their concerns. Organisers have maintained that the movement will continue until their demands are met. In a statement shared on social media, representatives of the protest said they would remain united in their campaign and continue pressing for action. The protests have witnessed moments of heightened tension. Earlier this week, clashes reportedly broke out after police attempted to disperse demonstrators using batons and tear gas. Several protesters were removed from protest sites during security operations, while opposition leaders participating in demonstrations outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence were also detained during a separate sit-in. Despite the tense atmosphere, student groups have continued their demonstrations, attracting support from activists, public figures and members of the entertainment industry. The appearance of Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem adds to the growing list of Bollywood personalities who have publicly voiced solidarity with the students and their demands. As the protests continue, attention remains focused on the government’s response and whether officials will address the concerns raised by demonstrators. With public support growing and demonstrations showing no signs of slowing down, the movement has become one of the country’s most closely watched developments in recent weeks.
