Rain continues across Sindh

Intermittent rain continues to affect several parts of Sindh, including Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta and Sujawal, bringing relief from the heat but also causing water accumulation in low-lying areas.

In Mirpurkhas, persistent rainfall has flooded several low-lying localities, with rainwater entering homes and creating difficulties for residents. The situation has also disrupted routine activities in affected areas.

Power supply has also been affected in parts of Mirpurkhas following a fault in a high-tension transmission line. Residents have faced electricity outages as efforts continue to address the technical issue and restore the supply.

Weather conditions remain unsettled across southern and southeastern Sindh, where rain-bearing clouds continue to dominate the region. Further rainfall is possible in several areas as the weather system remains active.

In Karachi, light rain and drizzle were reported in several parts of the city, including Quaidabad, Malir and Gulistan-e-Johar. The showers brought cooler conditions to some localities, while residents in other areas continued to experience cloudy and humid weather.

Authorities and local administrations are monitoring the situation, particularly in low-lying areas where continued rainfall could lead to further water accumulation and temporary disruption to daily life.

Evan Rachel Wood breaks silence on Practical Magic…

Evan Rachel Wood has finally addressed her absence from Practical Magic 2, sharing her honest feelings about not returning for the highly anticipated sequel to the 1998 cult classic. While promoting her latest project, The Shards, the actress spoke with Entertainment Tonight and admitted she is disappointed that she won’t be reuniting with the cast that helped shape one of her earliest film experiences.  Wood portrayed Kylie Owens, the eldest daughter of Sandra Bullock’s character Sally Owens, in the original Practical Magic. The upcoming sequel, inspired by Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic, sees Joey King taking over the role of Kylie, while Maisie Williams has been cast as Antonia Owens, originally played by Alexandra Artrip.  Reflecting on the decision, Wood said she understood why the filmmakers may have chosen a different direction. She explained that after reading The Book of Magic, she felt the novel could have allowed her character to return. However, she acknowledged that the movie appears to be taking a different creative approach, making her involvement less likely.  Despite understanding the creative changes, the actress admitted the experience has been emotional. She said what hurts the most is missing the opportunity to reunite with the original cast and revisit the iconic house where much of the film was shot. According to Wood, those shared childhood memories are impossible to recreate and would have been meaningful not only for the actors but also for longtime fans of the beloved fantasy film.  This is not the first time Wood has spoken about the sequel. In 2025, she revealed on social media that she had offered to return “even for one scene or one line,” but was informed that the roles were being recast. She emphasized that the decision was entirely out of her hands and said she would have happily returned if given the opportunity.  Even so, Wood made it clear that she holds no ill will toward the production. She wished Joey King the very best in taking over the role and expressed hope that the new cast enjoys the same magical experience she had while filming the original movie nearly three decades ago.  Practical Magic 2 will reunite original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman alongside returning cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. The sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 11, 2026, bringing the magical Owens family back to the big screen for a new generation of fans.  Evan Rachel Wood has finally addressed her absence from Practical Magic 2, sharing her honest feelings about not returning for the highly anticipated sequel to the 1998 cult classic. Dar urges SCO action against Afghan terrorism

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to strengthen regional cooperation against terrorism, saying lasting peace and economic development cannot be achieved unless militant groups operating from Afghan territory are effectively eliminated. Addressing the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Dar said Pakistan remains committed to regional peace and wants to see Afghanistan emerge as a peaceful, stable, regionally connected and economically prosperous country. He said a secure Afghanistan would benefit not only Pakistan but all SCO member states and the wider region. The foreign minister described terrorism originating from Afghan territory as one of the most serious security challenges facing Pakistan. He said militant organisations continue to use Afghan soil for recruitment, training and planning attacks, creating persistent threats to regional stability. Dar said Pakistan has suffered heavily from terrorism in recent years. According to him, more than 560 Pakistanis have lost their lives in over 2,000 terrorist incidents since the beginning of this year. He added that investigations into several attacks had also identified the involvement of Afghan nationals. He urged the SCO to play a more active role in addressing the security situation and called on the Afghan authorities to honour their international commitments against terrorism. He stressed that no country’s territory should be allowed to serve as a base for militant activities targeting neighbouring states. Speaking about the SCO, Dar said the organisation has developed into one of the region’s most important platforms for cooperation over the past 25 years. He noted that it now promotes collaboration not only in security but also in trade, economic development, connectivity, culture and regional stability. Looking ahead, Dar said the organisation should place greater emphasis on digital development, technological cooperation, innovation and energy security to meet future regional challenges and promote sustainable economic growth among member states. Turning to the Middle East, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect remain the only effective means of resolving international disputes. He said peaceful negotiations are essential for achieving lasting regional peace and preventing further conflict. He also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Dar said Pakistan played an important role in encouraging direct engagement between the two countries, leading to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year. He described the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement and encouraged the international community to build on the progress made through continued negotiations. On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Dar held separate meetings with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing regional cooperation and expanding collaboration through multilateral organisations. During his meeting with Wang Yi, both leaders reviewed Pakistan-China relations and exchanged views on regional developments. The Chinese foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote regional peace and extended best wishes for Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the SCO for 2026-27.

  • Senate questions OPF MD’s Rs1m salary and appointment

Islamabad: A controversy has emerged over the appointment of the Managing Director of the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) after Senator Aimal Wali Khan raised serious questions in the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat regarding the selection process, salary package and background of the appointed official. During the meeting chaired by Senator Rana Mahmood ul Hassan, Senator Aimal Wali Khan questioned the appointment of the OPF Managing Director and demanded complete details from the concerned authorities. Senator Aimal Wali Khan said that while the government has discussed the financial difficulties faced by ordinary citizens, concerns arise when senior government positions receive very high salaries. He pointed out that the Prime Minister had publicly stated that a person can manage monthly expenses with Rs8,000, while an individual appointed in OPF was receiving a salary of Rs1 million per month. He further informed the committee that another individual had been appointed in OPF with a monthly salary of Rs2.5 million, raising questions about government pay structures and appointment policies. The senator also raised questions regarding the nationality and background of the OPF Managing Director. He alleged that the appointed individual does not possess a Pakistani National Identity Card and is a British citizen by birth. He also questioned how a person who had faced conviction by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) could receive another government appointment. Following these concerns, the Senate Committee took notice of the matter and directed the relevant authorities to provide complete details regarding the appointment of the Managing Director of Overseas Pakistanis Foundation. The committee stressed that appointments in public institutions must follow transparency, accountability and proper procedures to maintain public confidence. Responding to questions regarding government appointments, officials of the Establishment Division informed the committee that suitable candidates are not available for certain specialised positions, which creates difficulties in filling important posts. Senator Aimal Wali Khan also criticised the broader culture of retaining officials in important positions despite long periods of inability to perform duties. He remarked that some individuals continue to hold positions even when they are unable to actively perform their responsibilities. The matter was discussed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat held at the Establishment Division under the chairmanship of Senator Rana Mahmood ul Hassan. The meeting was attended by Senators Saadia Abbasi, Abdul Qadir, Dilawar Khan, Aimal Wali Khan and Saleem Mandviwalla, along with the Secretary Cabinet Division and Secretary Establishment Division. The committee directed authorities to submit the required information so that the issue of public appointments, governance and institutional reforms could be reviewed in detail in upcoming meetings.
