At least 18 migrants die as thousands cross into Spain’s Ceuta enclave

At least 18 migrants have died while attempting to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after thousands crossed the border from Morocco in one of the largest migration surges seen in the region in recent years. The humanitarian situation continued to worsen on Friday as migrants kept arriving by sea while clashes broke out between Moroccan security forces and groups gathered near the border.

Hundreds of migrants were seen on hills overlooking Ceuta as Moroccan authorities used tear gas to disperse crowds trying to move toward the Spanish territory. Despite the security operation, many people continued to swim across the narrow stretch of water separating Morocco from Ceuta. At the same time, large numbers of migrants who had already entered the enclave chose to return to Morocco on foot.

Rachid Sbihi, who heads a local association representing Spain’s Civil Guard officers, described the situation as a serious humanitarian emergency. He said thousands of migrants, including many unaccompanied children, were sleeping in parks, streets and public spaces because reception centres had reached capacity. Emergency teams and military personnel sent to the area have mainly focused on treating the injured and providing humanitarian assistance as authorities struggle to manage the crisis.

According to local officials, many of the 18 victims drowned while trying to swim into Ceuta. Others reportedly died during a stampede near the breakwater at Tarajal beach as large crowds rushed toward the border. Rescue teams continued searching the coastline while personal belongings including shoes, clothing and flotation devices were scattered along the shore.

Many migrants said they left Morocco in search of better economic opportunities in Europe. One migrant, 33 year old Ahmed Karim, said unemployment and limited prospects at home had driven many people to take the dangerous journey. He explained that many dream of reaching Europe or the United States but see few legal opportunities to do so.

Moroccan authorities strengthened security along the border by deploying additional police officers, using water cannons and firing warning shots into the air to stop more crossings. Human rights groups said migrants who were detained near the border were transported further into Morocco, although many others continued arriving in the area hoping to enter Ceuta.

Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, expressed hope that those who had crossed into Ceuta would voluntarily return. She said Morocco supports safe and orderly migration but did not comment on what had triggered the sudden movement of thousands of people toward the Spanish territory.

Officials in Spain linked the surge to a recent Supreme Court ruling stating that migrants who reach Spain by swimming cannot automatically be returned, unlike those who cross by land or climb the border fence. The Spanish government argued that people smuggling networks had exploited public misunderstanding of the ruling to encourage migrants to attempt the dangerous crossing. Some Moroccan rights activists questioned that explanation, saying many migrants were unlikely to have known about the legal decision.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was expected to visit Ceuta after local authorities requested military assistance. His government’s migration policies have come under criticism from opposition politicians, who argue that recent measures granting residency and work permits to certain undocumented migrants have encouraged more people to head for Spain. The government rejected those claims, insisting the current crisis is unrelated to its immigration reforms.

The unrest also spread to Melilla, Spain’s other North African enclave, where groups of migrants attempted to cross the border and clashed with Moroccan police. Rights groups reported injuries among security personnel and dozens of arrests. Spanish officials have not yet confirmed how many migrants entered Ceuta, although media reports estimate that between 30,000 and 49,000 people crossed into the territory within a single day, placing enormous pressure on a city with a population of about 84,000.

Poland’s main opposition party splits following loyalty pledge ultimatum

Poland’s main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party has fractured following a severe internal dispute over its political strategy, with former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and dozens of his allies breaking ranks with longtime leader Jarosław Kaczyński. The split occurred after Kaczyński issued an ultimatum demanding all PiS lawmakers sign a strict loyalty oath committing them not to collaborate with outside political groups. Dozens of parliamentarians, led by Morawiecki, refused to sign the pledge before the deadline, leading Kaczyński to declare that those who abstained had effectively resigned from the party. The former prime minister confirmed that his faction includes 40 members of parliament, three members of the European Parliament, and one senator, though he maintained that his group sought to preserve unity while broadening the right-wing electoral base toward younger, centre-right voters. The division threatens PiS’s status as the largest party in the Polish parliament, a position it held despite losing power to Donald Tusk’s pro-European coalition in 2023. As the conservative vote increasingly fragments across competing factions ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections, the formal expulsion of the dissident lawmakers is scheduled to be processed at a party leadership meeting.

Kendall Jenner fuels Jacob Elordi romance rumors with poetry

Kendall Jenner has sparked fresh speculation about her relationship with actor Jacob Elordi after sharing an emotional piece of love poetry on social media. The model and entrepreneur took to Instagram on August 11, just two days after celebrating the 29th birthday of her younger sister, Kylie Jenner. Instead of sharing another glimpse into her family celebrations, Kendall posted a meaningful poem that appeared to explore love, vulnerability and the complicated emotions that can emerge in relationships. The poem, titled For Grace, After a Party, was written by acclaimed American poet Frank O’Hara. It focuses on the intimate feelings of someone deeply in love and the contrast between private emotions and the chaos of social situations. The poem begins with the line, “You do not always know what I am feeling,” setting an emotional and reflective tone. It then describes how the speaker’s feelings for his loved one can become overwhelming, even in a room filled with people. The writing continues to explore the idea of expressing intense emotions indirectly. The speaker recalls being surrounded by strangers while realizing that his strongest feelings were connected to the person he loved. The poem presents love as something powerful enough to transform anger, loneliness and ordinary moments into deeply personal experiences. Later, the poem shifts toward a quieter scene between two people who share an intimate relationship. The speaker describes waking after a night out and finding comfort in the presence of his loved one. Even an ordinary moment, such as being asked how they would like their eggs prepared, becomes meaningful because of the emotional connection between the couple. Kendall’s decision to share the poem has prompted fans to wonder whether it could have a connection to her own romantic life. She has reportedly been linked to Jacob Elordi, with speculation surrounding the pair growing after they were seen spending time together on several occasions. The two have reportedly grown closer since the beginning of the year and have been spotted enjoying time together during the summer. Their relationship has attracted considerable public attention, particularly because both Kendall and Jacob have generally kept their personal lives away from the spotlight. While Kendall did not provide any explanation for sharing the poem, its romantic and vulnerable themes quickly led fans to interpret the post as a possible message connected to her relationship. However, there is no confirmation that the poem was intended for Jacob or that it reflects the current state of their romance. Kendall may simply have connected with O’Hara’s words and wanted to share them with her followers. For now, the Instagram post remains open to interpretation, leaving fans to speculate about whether Kendall was expressing her feelings or simply appreciating a powerful piece of poetry.

Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk says he remains ali…

Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk says he has lost 11 kilograms during a 26 day hunger strike but remains alive, as his protest continues to fuel a wider youth movement demanding education reforms in India. Wangchuk, known widely as Sonam sir, has become the central figure in a youth led campaign organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, which is calling for sweeping education reforms and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He was removed from the group’s protest site at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday and taken to a hospital, where he has continued his fast. Despite his removal from the demonstration site, thousands of supporters have kept returning to Jantar Mantar, even after a heavy handed police response to a march toward parliament earlier in the week left numerous protesters and police officers injured. That crackdown has intensified public anger and energized opposition parties, creating a growing political challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Modi has not addressed the protests directly or met with demonstrators, but he issued a statement on social media that many interpreted as an effort to connect with students angered by repeated leaks of exam papers. He wrote that the welfare of the country’s youth matters above all else and said the government would establish fast track courts to deliver swift punishment for those responsible for the leaks. A spokesperson for the Cockroach Janta Party, Ashutosh Ranka, responded that the government’s plan addressed the aftermath rather than the root cause, saying the movement wants to know why the leaks keep happening and who profits from them. He indicated in a video statement that protesters intend to continue their campaign until their demands are met. Even though Wangchuk is no longer physically present at the protest grounds, his fast has become a symbolic centerpiece of the movement, with demonstrators displaying placards and artwork referencing his hunger strike. Before he was hospitalized, he spent 21 days enduring intense summer heat while consuming only salt and water. Medanta Hospital in Gurugram said in a statement that Wangchuk was admitted to intensive care and is being monitored by a team of specialists. The hospital described his condition as stable and said his vital signs remain within normal ranges, adding that all treatment is being given with his consent. On Wednesday, senior figures including Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, along with opposition lawmakers, activists and public personalities, again urged Wangchuk to end his fast. Health Minister JP Nadda, who visited the hospital on Tuesday night, said he too had asked the activist to stop and rejoin efforts to guide young people, adding that the government remains willing to discuss the issues he has raised. Wangchuk has so far rejected these appeals. In a video statement recorded from his hospital bed on Wednesday night, he said he wants to end his fast because his work matters to him, but added that he would only do so once the government guarantees no force or retaliation will be used against students. He said he would end the strike immediately if that assurance comes, and would continue if it does not. He also praised the students involved in Monday’s confrontation with police, saying they showed remarkable composure even while being beaten with sticks, and said their restraint under pressure led him to keep going with his fast. Neither Wangchuk’s latest statement nor an earlier letter he sent to government ministers he met on Tuesday mentioned Pradhan’s resignation directly, though the Cockroach Janta Party maintains that the demand has not changed. Dipke told supporters that the protest at Jantar Mantar will continue until Pradhan steps down, and said the movement would not let Wangchuk’s sacrifice or the injuries suffered by students go without result. The standoff reflects a broader pattern seen in past protest movements across South Asia, where a single high profile figure’s personal sacrifice becomes a rallying point that sustains momentum long after the initial spark fades. Hunger strikes in particular have a long history in Indian political life as a tool for applying moral pressure on governments, dating back to independence era activism, and their effectiveness often depends on sustained public attention and the government’s willingness to negotiate before a health crisis forces the issue. As the standoff continues, the government faces mounting pressure to address both the immediate demand for accountability over exam paper leaks and the broader question of how education policy is managed, while doctors continue to monitor Wangchuk’s condition inside the hospital.
