Gun attack on Police van kills two officers in DI …

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two police personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), were martyred after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police van in the Daraban area of Dera Ismail Khan on Friday, authorities said.

According to officials from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), the attack occurred near Shah Alam Mor, where the police team was travelling to conduct an operation after receiving intelligence about the presence of suspected militants in the area.

As the police van reached the location, armed assailants launched a sudden attack, firing multiple rounds at the vehicle. The officers immediately returned fire, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire.

Despite the retaliation, two police officials, including an ASI, sustained critical injuries and were martyred in the line of duty. Officials said the attackers managed to flee the scene under the cover of the exchange of fire.

Security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Investigators are collecting evidence from the scene while intelligence agencies are assisting in identifying those responsible for the assault.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities are treating it as an act of terrorism.

The latest incident highlights the persistent security challenges in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where law enforcement personnel have increasingly come under attack during counterterrorism operations.

Police officials vowed that those behind the ambush would be brought to justice, reaffirming their commitment to continuing operations against militant groups despite the growing threats. The sacrifice of the fallen officers, they said, reflects the courage and dedication of Pakistan’s security forces in maintaining peace and protecting citizens.

Anne Hathaway drops a bombshell on Julie Andrews?…

Fans of The Princess Diaries have been given a bittersweet update about the long-awaited third movie. Anne Hathaway has addressed Julie Andrews’ decision not to return as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, a role that became one of the most beloved parts of the original films. Andrews recently confirmed that she will not appear in The Princess Diaries 3. The 90-year-old actress explained that she has essentially retired from on-screen acting and felt the new story could continue without her character. She also acknowledged that turning down the opportunity was difficult. (InStyle) Hathaway, who played Mia Thermopolis in the first two movies, has responded warmly when discussing her former co-star. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Hathaway described Andrews as a warm, gracious and funny person and reflected on the special connection they developed while making the original movies. (EW.com) For Hathaway, Andrews’ absence is particularly meaningful because the veteran actress played such an important role in her early career. Their relationship was not simply limited to the characters of Mia and Queen Clarisse. Andrews also became someone Hathaway admired and learned from. Still, Hathaway has made it clear that the third movie is moving forward. During Disney’s D23 event on August 14, she reassured fans that the team is working hard to make sure the sequel feels right. She also thanked audiences for their patience as the project continues to develop. (Harper’s BAZAAR) The third installment has taken years to reach this stage. Adele Lim, known for Crazy Rich Asians, is directing the film, while Hathaway is returning as Mia and is also involved behind the scenes as a producer. The story has gone through changes, with an earlier version of the script being scrapped as the filmmakers searched for the right direction. (People.com) Andrews’ decision means fans will not see the familiar grandmother-granddaughter dynamic that helped define the first two movies. However, her legacy as Queen Clarisse remains a major part of the franchise. While her absence may be disappointing, Hathaway appears determined to honor what made the original films special. The challenge now is creating a new chapter that feels familiar without simply repeating the past. After more than two decades, Mia is finally heading back to Genovia. And although Queen Clarisse will not be there in person, the impact Julie Andrews made on the franchise is unlikely to disappear.

Pakistan High Commission London launches direct digital property transfer service for British Pakistanis

In a major step to improve consular services for overseas Pakistanis, the Pakistan High Commission in London has launched a digital property transfer facility, enabling British Pakistanis to transfer property in Punjab without travelling to Pakistan. Introduced in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives to enhance services for the Pakistani diaspora, the initiative allows overseas Pakistanis to complete the property transfer process directly at the High Commission after verifying their identity. Under the new system, applicants are no longer required to issue a Power of Attorney or appoint an agent to handle property transfers on their behalf, reducing the risk of fraud and unnecessary legal expenses. The digital property transfer process is designed to be transparent, secure, efficient and cost-effective, offering overseas Pakistanis a streamlined alternative to the traditional method of property transactions. The service is part of a collaboration between the Punjab Land Records Authority (PLRA) and Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bringing digital land record services closer to the Pakistani community in the United Kingdom. Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modernising public services and facilitating overseas Pakistanis by allowing them to manage property matters from London without the need to travel to Pakistan.

    7.1-magnitude earthquake jolts Japan’s Kyushu

TOKYO: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kyushu island on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas. The earthquake hit Kumamoto prefecture at around 4:27pm local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The agency recorded the tremor at the highest level on Japan’s seven-point seismic intensity scale in some areas. Following the earthquake, the JMA warned that tsunami waves of up to one metre could reach nearby coastal areas. Residents were urged to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities. The Japanese government also issued emergency earthquake warnings for several prefectures across Kyushu. These included Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki. The strong tremor disrupted daily life in several areas. Around 40,000 homes reportedly lost electricity after the earthquake. Train services operated by JR Kyushu were also suspended as authorities assessed the situation. Kyushu Electric Power said its Sendai and Genkai nuclear power plants reported no abnormalities or damage following the earthquake. Officials continued monitoring the facilities as a precaution. The latest earthquake comes after another strong tremor struck northern Japan on June 25. That earthquake measured 7.2 in magnitude but did not cause major casualties or widespread damage. Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. It sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country experiences thousands of earthquakes every year. It also accounts for a significant share of the world’s earthquakes measuring magnitude 6 or higher.

Samsung software update triggers battery and heating complaints

Samsung’s latest software update has sparked concern among some Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra users, with numerous reports suggesting that the update has negatively affected battery performance, charging speed, and overall device temperature. Many users have taken to online technology forums and social media platforms to share their experiences, claiming that their smartphones are no longer performing as efficiently as they did before installing the update. According to user reports, one of the most common issues is rapid battery drain. Several Galaxy owners have said their devices now lose power at a much faster rate, even during light or moderate usage. Some users claim that a phone charged to 100% can drop to a significantly lower battery level within only a few hours, despite being used for basic tasks such as messaging, browsing the internet, or checking emails. This unexpected battery consumption has become a major source of frustration for many customers who previously enjoyed reliable battery life. Another frequently reported problem is overheating. Users say their smartphones become unusually warm shortly after the software update, even when the devices are idle. Some owners have mentioned that their phones heat up while simply resting on a table or couch without any demanding applications running. Others have observed increased temperatures during everyday activities such as streaming videos, browsing social media, or using navigation apps. The excessive heat has raised concerns about the long-term impact on battery health and overall device performance. In addition to battery and heating issues, several users have reported slower charging speeds after updating their devices. According to these reports, phones now require more time to reach a full charge than they did before the software installation. Although charging still functions normally, the extended charging time has become another inconvenience for users who depend on fast charging during their daily routines. Technology enthusiasts and community members believe the issue may be linked to background system processes that fail to complete properly after the update. These processes may become trapped in continuous operating loops, forcing the phone’s processor to remain active even when the device is not being used. As a result, the processor consumes more power than usual, leading to faster battery depletion and higher internal temperatures. While Samsung has not yet released an official statement acknowledging the reported issues, users can try several temporary measures to reduce their impact. Reviewing the Battery Usage section in the Settings menu can help identify applications consuming an unusually high amount of power. Closing these apps, clearing their cache, or limiting background activity may improve battery performance. Users may also benefit from temporarily disabling automatic cloud backups if they suspect syncing services are contributing to the problem. Restarting the smartphone can also terminate unnecessary background processes that may have become stuck after the update, potentially improving battery life and reducing overheating. This is not the first time Samsung users have experienced battery-related issues following a major software release. Similar problems have been reported after previous updates, and in many cases, the company later resolved them by releasing follow-up software patches. Until Samsung provides an official fix, Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra owners experiencing these problems may need to rely on these temporary troubleshooting methods. Users are also encouraged to keep their devices updated, as future software releases are expected to address the reported battery drain, overheating, and charging performance concerns.

Arjumand Rahim opens up about anxiety and multiple ER visits

Arjumand Rahim is one of Pakistani television’s most enduring and respected performers. She began her career in the 1990s and has built a body of work that spans three decades, evolving alongside the industry itself and consistently delivering performances that leave a mark. Her recent role in Sher reminded audiences precisely what she is capable of, earning widespread praise and reinforcing her standing as one of the finest actors of her generation. Away from the screen, however, she has been quietly navigating a health struggle that was far more frightening than anything she has portrayed on camera. Appearing as a guest on Vasay Chaudhary’s show, Arjumand spoke with remarkable candour about a period in her life when she repeatedly found herself in the emergency room with no clear explanation for what was happening to her body. She described feeling faint and physically unwell on multiple occasions, with each ER visit leaving her more shaken than the last. Adding to her fear was a deeply personal detail: her father had passed away due to cardiac arrest, and the physical symptoms she was experiencing brought that grief rushing back in the most frightening way possible. Every episode of faintness or discomfort carried the shadow of that loss. It was only when she received a proper diagnosis that the picture began to make sense. She was found to be suffering from extreme anxiety and depression, conditions that had been manifesting through very real and alarming physical symptoms. For someone who had not understood what was happening to her, the diagnosis, while difficult to hear, was also the beginning of clarity. She sought professional help, underwent therapy, and received the treatment she needed to begin recovering. She described the period before the diagnosis as truly frightening, a time when she did not know what was wrong with her and could not explain what her body was doing or why. The uncertainty, layered on top of grief and the physical toll of the episodes themselves, made for an extraordinarily difficult stretch of time. The good news, and she was clear about this, is that she is doing significantly better now. The treatment worked, and the willingness to seek help made the difference. Her decision to speak openly about what she went through carries weight beyond her own story. In Pakistan, conversations around mental health and its physical manifestations remain challenging, and the stigma surrounding anxiety, depression and therapy continues to prevent many people from reaching out. When a figure of Arjumand Rahim’s stature speaks plainly about her own diagnosis and her experience of getting treatment, it sends a message that reaching for help is not weakness but the beginning of getting better. That is a message worth hearing.
