LAHORE: Police have claimed to have solved the mystery surrounding the deaths of a US national and her three children in a private housing society in Lahore, saying forensic evidence indicates the woman fatally poisoned her children before taking her own life.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Lahore DIG Investigation Zeeshan Raza said forensic findings and the investigation suggest the woman mixed potassium cyanide into ice cream and gave it to her three children on July 17 before consuming the poisoned dessert herself.

According to investigators, the woman had recently arrived in Lahore from the United States with her husband and children. Police said the investigation revealed she had been suffering from mental health problems and had allegedly searched online for methods of suicide before the incident.

The DIG further stated that investigators believe the woman also attempted to serve the poisoned ice cream to her husband, but he did not consume it.

Police said the investigation included forensic analysis, digital evidence and interviews with family members. Authorities also conducted a polygraph examination of the husband as part of the inquiry before concluding that he was not involved in the deaths.

During the investigation, police traced the source of the chemical allegedly used in the incident. Officials said the woman had arranged for the parcel containing the chemical to be delivered to a friend’s residence instead of her own address.

As part of the probe, police arrested two additional suspects, including the owner of an online chemical business and a delivery rider. Investigators allege the shop owner illegally sold potassium cyanide online and received Rs138,540 for the transaction.

Police said both suspects will face legal proceedings for their alleged role in supplying the hazardous chemical. Investigators added that a comprehensive case file is being prepared in coordination with prosecutors to ensure the accused are prosecuted under the relevant laws.

The case shocked the country after the woman and her three children were found dead under mysterious circumstances earlier this month. Authorities say the investigation relied on forensic evidence and digital records to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the online sale of highly toxic chemicals and highlighted the importance of stronger oversight, as well as greater awareness and access to mental health support for individuals experiencing severe psychological distress.

The rapid progress in AI driven weather forecasting has sparked growing competition among technology firms, research institutions and national meteorological agencies worldwide, with China establishing itself as one of the sector’s most active players. Even so, meteorologists caution that AI tools currently serve as a complement to physics based forecasting rather than a full replacement. These systems still struggle to accurately capture sudden shifts in storm intensity, and they remain largely untested when it comes to long term climate modeling. As a result, traditional forecasting methods are expected to remain a core part of weather prediction for the foreseeable future, even as AI tools continue to mature and take on a larger role alongside them.     PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has directed a citizen named Quaid-e-Azam to appear before the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Board after his Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) was blocked. The matter came before the court after the citizen challenged the blocking of his CNIC through a petition. A division bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmed and Justice Inamullah Khan heard the case. During the proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer told the court that his client was a businessman. He said the citizen’s CNIC had been blocked and requested the court to intervene in the matter. The lawyer sought relief against the action taken against his client. He maintained that the blocking of the identity card had affected the citizen and required judicial consideration. A NADRA representative also appeared before the court. The Director Legal of NADRA informed the bench that the CNIC had not been blocked without reason. He said the authority had found the petitioner’s identity record suspicious. According to NADRA, the issue required further verification of the citizen’s record and identity documents. After hearing both sides, the court did not immediately order the restoration of the CNIC. Instead, the bench directed the petitioner to appear before the NADRA Board. The court’s direction means that the petitioner will have an opportunity to present his position before the relevant authority. NADRA will then examine the matter in accordance with its verification process.     PPP, PML-N hold unity talks over AJK polls

    Senior leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) held a high-level meeting in Muzaffarabad on Thursday to defuse growing political tensions over the ongoing Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. The meeting came after days of heated exchanges between the two coalition partners following the Mirpur election. The PPP had accused the electoral process of being marred by widespread irregularities and raised concerns over the credibility of the results. They also agreed that the dispute should not affect the remaining phases of the AJK elections. The meeting also reviewed security arrangements for polling in the remaining constituencies, particularly in Muzaffarabad. Both parties agreed that no individual should be allowed to carry weapons inside or around polling stations. They stressed that strict security measures were necessary to ensure peaceful, transparent and orderly polling.     QUETTA: A security official was martyred and six others were injured when an explosive device targeted a security convoy in Khad Kocha, Mastung district, on Saturday, police said. According to officials, the bomb had been planted near Gro in the Khad Kocha area along the Quetta-Karachi National Highway. It was detonated as security vehicles passed through the area, striking one of the vehicles. A senior police officer confirmed the death and injuries, saying the remaining vehicles in the convoy were not affected by the explosion. Following the blast, an exchange of fire continued in the area for some time. Police officials said the attackers fled after additional security personnel arrived at the scene. The deceased official and injured personnel were taken to Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities subsequently closed the highway, disrupting traffic at several points, while security forces launched a search operation to locate those responsible. The incident came a day after another explosion in the same area killed four labourers working in an apple orchard and injured three others. Medical officials said the victims had suffered visible splinter injuries.
