QUETTA: A security official was martyred and six others were injured when an explosive device targeted a security convoy in Khad Kocha, Mastung district, on Saturday, police said.

According to officials, the bomb had been planted near Gro in the Khad Kocha area along the Quetta-Karachi National Highway. It was detonated as security vehicles passed through the area, striking one of the vehicles.

A senior police officer confirmed the death and injuries, saying the remaining vehicles in the convoy were not affected by the explosion.

Following the blast, an exchange of fire continued in the area for some time. Police officials said the attackers fled after additional security personnel arrived at the scene.

The deceased official and injured personnel were taken to Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities subsequently closed the highway, disrupting traffic at several points, while security forces launched a search operation to locate those responsible.

The incident came a day after another explosion in the same area killed four labourers working in an apple orchard and injured three others. Medical officials said the victims had suffered visible splinter injuries.

    Pakistan Air Force’s J-10C fighter jets reportedly engaged Indian aircraft during the May 2025 aerial confrontation without direct support from airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. The claim was made in a report by Ukrainian defence publication Defense Express. The report cited Chinese state television and comments from Chinese radar specialist Ben De. According to the report, Pakistani J-10C jets used their onboard KLJ-7A radars to detect and engage Indian aircraft. The jets were reportedly able to track targets from a distance of around 200 kilometres. The report claimed that six Indian aircraft were shot down during the confrontation. It included three Rafale fighter jets among the aircraft allegedly destroyed. The report said the Pakistani fighters did not require direct targeting assistance from AEW&C aircraft during the reported engagements. Instead, the J-10Cs reportedly used their own radar systems to identify and track targets. The KLJ-7A is an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar designed for modern air combat. It can detect and track multiple targets and provide information needed for air-to-air engagements. The report’s claims have drawn attention because AEW&C aircraft are normally used to provide wider-area surveillance and help fighter jets detect threats at longer ranges. The reported use of the J-10C’s onboard radar suggests that the aircraft could conduct long-range engagements with greater independence from airborne surveillance platforms. The May 2025 confrontation involved intense aerial activity between Pakistan and India. Both sides made competing claims about losses and the effectiveness of their military operations. The claim that six Indian aircraft were destroyed, including three Rafales, has not been independently verified. India has also disputed Pakistan’s claims about aircraft losses. The reported account therefore remains a claim attributed to Chinese sources and the Ukrainian defence publication.

        ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has announced the Pakistan Civil Awards 2026 honouring 372 Pakistani citizens, overseas Pakistanis and foreign nationals for their outstanding achievements, services and acts of courage in various fields. The awards were announced on August 14, 2026 on the occasion of Independence Day, by the President of Pakistan. According to an official press release issued by the Cabinet Division, the honours recognise individuals who have demonstrated exceptional performance, excellence, dedication and bravery. The awards will formally be conferred at an Investiture Ceremony on Pakistan Day, March 23, 2027. The recipients come from diverse fields, including science, engineering, education, medicine, literature, arts, sports, journalism, social welfare, philanthropy and public service. A significant number have also been recognised for gallantry and sacrifices made while performing their duties. Among scientists, Dr Shahid Mahmud has been selected for the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in Science (I.T.), while Prof Dr Syed Zafar Ilyas and Prof Dr Mudassir Asrar will receive the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Several other scientists, including Dr Sajjad Hussain, Prof Dr Aneela Zameer Jaffery and Dr Urooj Saeed, have been selected for the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. Engineers Dr Muhammad Sadiq and Prof Dr Naeem-ul-Haq Tariq have also been named for the award. In education, Prof Sheikh Imtiaz Ali (late) has received the Nishan-i-Imtiaz posthumously. Lt Gen (retd) Moazzam Ejaz has been selected for the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, while other educators and researchers have been recognised with Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. The government has also honoured numerous doctors and health professionals. Prof Faisal Saud Dar has been selected for the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, while the late Prof Dr Tahir Shamsi has been awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz posthumously for his contributions to bone marrow transplantation. The arts category includes actors, singers, musicians, painters and theatre personalities. Sultana Siddiqi has been selected for the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, while Nisho Begum, Iftikhar Ahmed Thakur, Syed Fasih Uddin Soharwardhy, Shakir Hussain, Taranam Naz and Saira John Peter are among those receiving the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Numerous performers and traditional artists have also been recognised through the Presidential Award for Pride of Performance and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. Literary figures have also featured prominently. Asad Muhammad Khan has been selected for the Nishan-i-Imtiaz for his contributions to fiction, drama and poetry, while Ejaz Rahim and Muhammad Khurshid Ul Hasan Rizvi will receive the Hilal-i-Imtiaz. Sports personalities, including wrestler Bashir Bhola, shooter Kishmala Talat, squash player Noor Zaman, boxer Muhammad Waseem and cricketer Sadiq Muhammad, have also been recognised. Journalists Muhammad Saleh Zaafir and Haji Nawaz Raza have been selected for the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, while several other media professionals will receive Pride of Performance and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz awards. Public service remains one of the largest categories, with Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Mohsin Naqvi, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahad Khan Cheema and Bilal Azhar Kayani selected for the Nishan-i-Imtiaz. The list also includes numerous military personnel, police officers and civilians recognised for bravery. Forty-three individuals have been named for the Sitara-i-Shuja’at, with many receiving the honour posthumously for sacrificing their lives in the line of duty. Several foreign nationals have also been honoured for their services to Pakistan. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has been selected for the Nishan-i-Pakistan, while other international figures have been chosen for various civil awards. The government has separately recognised overseas Pakistanis for their contributions, with recipients selected for honours including the Nishan-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. The official notification was issued by Cabinet Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal on August 14. The awards will be formally presented on March 23, 2027.

But despite his success across multiple genres, the acclaimed filmmaker says there is one type of movie he has no desire to direct anytime soon—a romantic comedy.  While promoting his latest epic, The Odyssey, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Nolan was asked whether fans could ever expect him to make a romantic comedy. Although the question was posed jokingly, the director gave a surprisingly thoughtful answer, admitting that the idea genuinely intimidates him.  “I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult,” Nolan said. “I love watching those movies.” However, he explained that making audiences laugh consistently is one of the toughest challenges in filmmaking, giving immense credit to directors and actors who specialize in comedy.  The two-time Academy Award winner went on to explain why comedy demands a unique level of precision. According to Nolan, filmmakers working in dramatic or suspenseful genres have more room for interpretation if a particular scene doesn’t resonate with viewers. Comedy, on the other hand, leaves little room for error because jokes either land—or they don’t. That pressure, he admitted, is enough to make him “terrified” of attempting the genre himself.  Nolan’s comments have quickly sparked discussion among movie lovers, many of whom praised his honesty. Fans pointed out that although the filmmaker has mastered science fiction, historical drama, superhero films, psychological thrillers and war epics, his willingness to acknowledge the difficulty of comedy reflects his respect for fellow filmmakers.  Interestingly, while Nolan appears reluctant to direct a romantic comedy, he recently revealed that The Odyssey has increased his interest in another genre—horror. The filmmaker said working on the mythological adventure, which features several frightening sequences, has left him eager to explore horror further, provided he finds the right story.  The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, marks another ambitious project for Nolan. Shot entirely using IMAX cameras, the film has received praise for its scale, practical effects and emotional storytelling, continuing the director’s tradition of delivering visually spectacular cinematic experiences.  Although fans may never see Christopher Nolan helm a lighthearted romantic comedy, his candid remarks highlight the immense respect he has for the genre. For now, the celebrated filmmaker remains committed to telling bold, ambitious stories—while happily leaving romantic laughs to directors who have mastered the art of comedy.

However, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has yet to officially comment, fueling speculation over its stance on the sensitive issue. The discussion began after Naqvi argued that Pakistan’s existing administrative framework had become ineffective and called for a national consensus on establishing smaller provinces to improve governance and public service delivery. His remarks quickly drew support from coalition allies, including the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP). Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal described the proposal as an urgent national necessity rather than a political choice, stressing that decentralizing administrative powers was essential for effective governance. The MQM-P has long advocated the creation of an additional province in Sindh, making the party one of the strongest supporters of the initiative. Privatization Minister Abdul Aleem Khan of the IPP also endorsed the proposal, suggesting that each of Pakistan’s four existing provinces could eventually be divided into three administrative regions. He argued that smaller provinces would bring government closer to the people and reduce the hardships faced by citizens traveling long distances to provincial capitals. Despite growing support from coalition partners, the proposal faces significant constitutional and political challenges. Any change to provincial boundaries requires a two-thirds majority in the affected provincial assembly, making consensus difficult to achieve. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which governs Sindh and is also part of the federal coalition, has expressed strong reservations, warning that such a move could create more problems than solutions. Opposition leaders have also criticized the proposal, arguing that the government lacks the political mandate for such a major constitutional change. They insist that strengthening democratic institutions and improving governance should take priority over redrawing provincial boundaries. Political analysts have offered differing views on the initiative. Some believe creating new provinces could deepen ethnic and regional divisions, while others see the debate as an attempt to shift public attention away from pressing national issues, including recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and ongoing security challenges in Balochistan. Many experts argue that empowering local governments under the 18th Constitutional Amendment would be a more practical and effective way to improve governance without altering provincial boundaries. Mustafa Kamal also acknowledged that stronger local governments are essential regardless of whether new provinces are eventually created. With the PML-N maintaining silence and key coalition partners taking opposing positions, the proposal has opened a fresh political debate that is likely to remain at the center of Pakistan’s national discourse in the coming months.

      ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday night, during which the two sides discussed recent developments in the region and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on issues of mutual interest. According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two foreign ministers agreed that dialogue and diplomacy remained the most effective means of addressing regional challenges and promoting peace and stability. The conversation took place as Pakistan continues its diplomatic engagement with regional and international partners amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Islamabad has increasingly emerged as an important diplomatic channel in efforts aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging negotiations between the parties. Dar has recently held discussions with several senior diplomats regarding the rapidly changing regional situation. Last week, he met US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott, Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong and Pakistan’s Ambassador-designate to Sweden Ahmed Amjad Ali. During these meetings, the foreign minister exchanged views with the diplomats on regional developments and Pakistan’s efforts to contribute to peace and stability. Eide described Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts as a service to the international community and expressed strong support for the role Islamabad had assumed since the conflict began on February 28. The latest diplomatic contacts also come against the backdrop of a major regional security development: the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye on August 7. The trilateral agreement has been described as a defensive security framework designed to strengthen collective deterrence, expand military cooperation and contribute to regional stability. The agreement has attracted considerable attention because of the growing security challenges in the region and the evolving strategic relationships among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. The Makkah agreement follows the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia last year. That pact established a stronger bilateral security relationship and stated that aggression against either country would be regarded as aggression against both. The latest developments indicate that Pakistan is seeking to strengthen diplomatic and security partnerships while maintaining its stated preference for dialogue and peaceful resolution of regional disputes. Dar’s conversation with Fidan further reflects the close relationship between Islamabad and Ankara, particularly on regional security and diplomatic matters. Both countries have consistently emphasized the importance of cooperation, consultation and peaceful negotiations in addressing regional crises.     Indian filmmaker Karan Johar marked the occasion of Guru Purnima with an emotional tribute to two people he says transformed his life and career—superstar Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Aditya Chopra. Through a heartfelt social media post, Karan reflected on the guidance, encouragement, and unwavering faith they showed in him long before he became one of Bollywood’s most successful directors. Sharing nostalgic photographs with Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra, Karan looked back on the early days of his journey in the film industry. He recalled a life-changing moment when Aditya Chopra invited him to assist on the iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. At the time, Karan was planning to continue his studies, but Aditya convinced him to stay back and experience filmmaking from behind the scenes. According to Karan, Aditya spoke to him late one night and urged him to work on the film. More importantly, he encouraged Karan to become a director, insisting that he had the talent for it. Karan remembered Aditya telling him that avoiding this path would be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Those words remained with him and eventually changed the direction of his future. The following morning, Karan discussed the opportunity with his father, the late producer Yash Johar. He asked for one year to work on a film set before making any long-term decisions. Karan shared that his father questioned whether he understood the responsibilities of working on a set. When Karan admitted he did not, Yash Johar offered advice that stayed with him forever. He explained that technical knowledge alone could make someone a producer, but becoming a director required genuine passion and commitment. Karan acknowledged that Aditya Chopra believed in his potential at a time when he lacked confidence in himself. That encouragement gave him the courage to step into filmmaking and eventually direct his first feature film. The filmmaker also reflected on another unforgettable moment involving Shah Rukh Khan. During a trip to Switzerland, the actor confidently told Karan that he would one day become a director and that Shah Rukh himself would star in his debut film. Karan admitted he did not take the promise seriously at the time, assuming it was simply a kind gesture. However, after returning to India, Shah Rukh Khan fulfilled that promise. He stood by Karan and supported him as he prepared for his directorial debut. That support eventually led to the creation of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the film that launched Karan Johar’s career as a director and became one of Bollywood’s biggest successes. Concluding his Guru Purnima message, Karan expressed deep gratitude to both Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra. He said their trust, mentorship, and belief helped him overcome self-doubt and pursue storytelling with confidence.
