JERUSALEM: An Israeli chief rabbi has sparked widespread controversy after reportedly denying the existence of the Palestinian people and asserting that Gaza and the occupied West Bank belong exclusively to Jews.

Chief Rabbi David Yosef was quoted as saying that there was no Palestinian nation in the past and that Palestinians have no rights to the land. His reported remarks have drawn attention amid the continuing conflict in Gaza and growing international concern over the humanitarian situation.

Yosef also reportedly claimed that Gaza and cities in the West Bank belong to Jews and suggested that Gaza would eventually be destroyed and populated by Jewish people.

The comments come as Israeli military operations in Gaza continue, with Palestinian officials reporting further deaths and injuries. The conflict has caused widespread destruction, displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis.

The remarks have also renewed scrutiny of developments in the occupied West Bank, where tensions between Palestinians and Israeli settlers remain high.

According to reports, Palestinian residents and farmers in areas including Hebron have faced incidents involving Israeli settlers. One reported incident involved a Palestinian farmer’s donkey being tied to a vehicle and dragged, resulting in the animal’s death.

Palestinian leaders and rights advocates have long opposed attempts to deny Palestinian national identity or rights, while the international community continues to debate the political future of Gaza and the West Bank.

    Political tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have deepened as Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) entered the second phase of its elections. Despite several rounds of negotiations, the two coalition partners failed to resolve their dispute over the first phase of polling. The second phase of the elections is being held in nine constituencies of Muzaffarabad division and all 12 refugee constituencies. Authorities have made extensive security arrangements to ensure peaceful polling, while political uncertainty continues to dominate the electoral process. The disagreement began after the first phase of elections in Mirpur, where the PML-N secured key victories. The PPP questioned the election results and alleged irregularities in several constituencies. The PML-N rejected the allegations and insisted that the elections reflected the public mandate. The dispute has led to an exchange of sharp political statements between leaders of both parties. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah criticized PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for repeatedly raising allegations of election rigging. He questioned the basis of such claims and also referred to the election of President Asif Ali Zardari while responding to the PPP’s criticism of the 2024 general elections. Rana Sanaullah also commented on Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent remarks regarding the country’s governance system and the debate over creating new provinces. He criticized the minister’s statements and questioned his political rise. Meanwhile, PPP leader Saeed Ghani strongly defended his party during a press conference. He claimed that the PPP had never formed a government through election manipulation. He alleged that the PML-N had repeatedly benefited from controversial election outcomes and accused its leadership of making baseless allegations against the PPP. It later withdrew objections in two constituencies but continued to demand action regarding Charhoi and Nakyal, where its candidates were defeated by PML-N nominees. During the negotiations, PML-N representatives maintained that any irregularities were isolated incidents rather than evidence of systematic rigging. They argued that such incidents had occurred in previous elections and should not be used to question the overall electoral process. The talks, however, failed to produce a final agreement. As a result, political tensions remained high ahead of the second phase of voting. Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met PML-N President Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umra to review the evolving political situation. The meeting focused on the party’s strategy and the growing dispute with the PPP over the AJK elections. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also attended the consultation. The participants reviewed the political challenges facing the ruling coalition and discussed possible steps to prevent further escalation between the two allied parties. In another development, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said he had received a positive response to his proposal for establishing a truth and reconciliation commission in Azad Kashmir. He described the response as encouraging and said the proposal had also received support from the AJK Legislative Assembly. Bilawal said he would carefully review the suggestions before consulting AJK Prime Minister Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore. He added that discussions would also be held with the federal government and other stakeholders to determine whether a consensus could be reached on the proposed commission.

    Apple has projected slower sales growth for the current quarter, disappointing investors as ongoing supply chain problems continue to limit the company’s ability to meet strong customer demand. The weaker outlook sent Apple shares down by more than five percent in after hours trading despite the company reporting better than expected financial results for the previous quarter. The technology giant said revenue for the quarter ending in September is expected to grow between 9 and 11 percent compared with the same period last year. That forecast fell short of market expectations, which had predicted growth of around 12 percent. Apple also expects iPhone sales to increase at a mid teens rate, slightly below analysts’ forecasts. Chief Executive Tim Cook said the company’s biggest challenge is not weak demand but limited supplies of critical components. He explained that shortages of advanced chip manufacturing technology have reduced Apple’s ability to produce enough of its custom designed processors, especially for its Mac computers. Cook said the company is reviewing all possible options to secure additional supplies, including working with alternative memory chip suppliers. Apple’s Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh told investors that the company expects gross profit margins to remain between 47 and 48 percent during the current quarter. Although supply problems remain a concern, executives said demand for Apple products continues to be stronger than expected across several product categories. According to Cook, the company experienced particularly high demand for its Mac lineup during the recently completed fiscal third quarter. Sales of Mac computers rose by nearly 29 percent, driven by strong demand for the entry level MacBook Neo and the premium MacBook Pro models. Cook said the advanced chip manufacturing industry currently lacks the flexibility to respond quickly to unexpectedly high demand, making it difficult for Apple to increase production. Despite concerns about future growth, Apple reported financial results that exceeded most market expectations. Revenue for the fiscal third quarter, which ended on June 27, increased by 16.4 percent to 109.42 billion dollars. Net profit reached 2.02 dollars per share, including benefits from tariff refunds provided by the United States government. Even without those refunds, earnings remained above analysts’ expectations. The company’s strongest performance came from iPhone sales, which climbed 21.7 percent to 54.25 billion dollars. These were Apple’s highest ever third quarter iPhone sales, a period that usually experiences slower demand as customers wait for new models to be released later in the year. Analysts believe some consumers accelerated purchases because of concerns that future price increases could result from the global shortage of memory chips. Mac sales also exceeded expectations, reaching 10.35 billion dollars during the quarter. However, iPad sales declined by 5.9 percent to 6.19 billion dollars. Cook said the decline reflected difficult comparisons with the previous year, when Apple launched a lower priced iPad model that generated unusually strong demand. Revenue from Greater China increased by 22.4 percent to 18.82 billion dollars, although that figure still fell below market forecasts. Analysts said investors remain uncertain about whether demand will remain strong if Apple decides to raise iPhone prices during its expected product launch in September. Although Apple continues to benefit from strong consumer interest and solid financial performance, the company acknowledged that supply chain disruptions remain a major obstacle. Executives said resolving shortages of advanced chips and memory components will be critical to maintaining growth as demand for premium technology products continues to rise.

The directive was initially revealed by The Washington Post following heightened scrutiny regarding the condition of US weapons reserves during the ongoing conflict. Spokesperson for the Department of Defence Sean Parnell verified the authenticity of the directive, noting that the submissions will directly shape the Pentagon’s budget request for fiscal year 2028. “The August 5 memo is real,” Parnell stated. “It will inform the fiscal year 2028 budget submitted to Congress for funding, and it is entirely consistent with our ongoing push to rebuild the defence industrial base.” Parnell added that direct engagement with weapons manufacturers is routine practice, defending the administration’s aggressive measures to expedite procurement schedules. He detailed that Feinberg is actively working to overhaul what he characterized as a broken, outdated, and overly intricate procurement framework, ensuring the military retains the capability to produce equipment at a pace that matches modern threat levels.
