Pakistan ‘not a hard state’, says DG I…

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said on Friday that Pakistan cannot yet be described as a “hard state,” stressing that the country’s laws must apply equally to all citizens without discrimination or elitism.

Speaking at a press conference focused on the security situation in Balochistan, the military spokesperson said the briefing aimed to address concerns about the province and explain the broader national security landscape.

He clarified that the term “hard state” does not refer to military rule but to a system where the rule of law is upheld uniformly, every citizen is treated equally, and all issues are resolved through legal and constitutional mechanisms.

The DG ISPR urged citizens to balance demands for rights with their constitutional responsibilities. Referring to Article 5 of the Constitution, he said loyalty to the state and obedience to the Constitution and the law are fundamental obligations of every Pakistani. He added that national identity should take precedence over provincial or ethnic affiliations, emphasizing that every citizen’s foremost identity should be Pakistani.

Highlighting the country’s counterterrorism efforts, Lt Gen Chaudhry said security forces have conducted 40,348 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across Pakistan so far this year, averaging around 194 operations daily, with a significant number taking place in Balochistan.

According to the military spokesperson, security forces have eliminated 2,084 terrorists during 2026, averaging nearly 10 militants killed each day. He said 3,145 terrorist incidents have been recorded this year, while 819 people have lost their lives, including 303 Pakistan Army personnel, 194 members of law enforcement agencies, and 322 civilians.

He also revealed that 28 suicide bombings have occurred this year, claiming that most of the attackers were Afghan nationals. He said Afghan citizens, along with individuals linked to Afghan security forces, were among those killed or arrested during counterterrorism operations.

Comparing recent years, the DG ISPR said security forces killed 2,597 terrorists throughout 2025, while the total for 2026 has already reached 2,084. He noted that the effectiveness of counterterrorism operations has improved over time, with security forces now inflicting heavier losses on militant groups.

Responding to questions about the increase in terrorist incidents, Lt Gen Chaudhry said militant groups affiliated with the Taliban have intensified their activities because Pakistan has adopted a firm stance against them. He added that the rise in reported incidents also reflects the growing number of proactive intelligence-based operations, which lead to more engagements between security forces and terrorists.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s security forces remain committed to eliminating terrorism and maintaining stability across the country, particularly in Balochistan.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali skips the usual teaser for ‘Love & War’s grand first look

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for doing things his own way, and his next big move looks set to prove that once again. According to an exclusive Bollywood Hungama report, Love & War, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, will not be introduced through a standard teaser or motion poster like most big-ticket films usually are. An industry source revealed that Bhansali himself is closely involved in shaping a special promotional asset meant to give audiences their very first look into the film’s world. The plan is to unveil this sometime in August, marking the official start of the film’s marketing rollout. “The makers are taking a rather unconventional route with Love & War. Instead of a standard promotional launch, they are developing a special asset that will serve as the audience’s first introduction to the film,” the source shared, adding that the project is being built as an immersive experience, with Bhansali working alongside his core creative team to bring it to life. This approach lines up with how Bhansali typically works, treating every visual detail as something meant to stir emotion and pull viewers straight into his cinematic world. Rather than going the usual route with character posters or a short teaser, he’s reportedly aiming to build something that reflects the scale, tone and emotional depth of Love & War even before the full promotional push kicks in. The asset is said to be in its final stages of development, with Bhansali overseeing every part of the creative process personally. If things stay on schedule, audiences should get their first real glimpse of the film sometime in August, offering an early sense of just how ambitious this project really is. While the exact format is still being kept under wraps, sources suggest it is designed to feel far bigger than a typical promo. The goal, apparently, is to create something closer to an event, instantly pulling viewers into Bhansali’s world and setting the tone for what’s shaping up to be one of Hindi cinema’s most-watched upcoming releases. Love & War brings Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal together on screen for the first time under Bhansali’s direction, making it one of the most anticipated films in recent memory. Ever since it was announced, the project has kept fans and industry watchers hooked on every update. If everything goes as planned, this first look could end up being remembered as a genuine promotional milestone, one that fits perfectly with Bhansali’s long-held belief that storytelling starts well before the audience takes their seat in the theatre.

Heatwave pushes UK death toll towards 2022’s grim record

Britain is edging dangerously close to matching one of its deadliest summers on record, and the peak heat month of August hasn’t even fully arrived yet. The UK Health Security Agency reported that an estimated 2,877 people have already died from heat-related causes this year. That number is nearly twice the total seen throughout all of 2025, and it’s steadily approaching the historic high recorded back in 2022. This latest update comes as the country deals with its fourth heatwave of the year. A string of unusually intense hot spells has already driven temperatures to record-breaking levels in parts of Britain during May and June. The extended dry spell has also worsened conditions on the ground, contributing to a rise in wildfires across several regions. Breaking the numbers down further, most deaths occurred across two distinct periods. Late May accounted for 753 fatalities, while a particularly severe June heatwave saw that number jump sharply to 2,124, prompting authorities to issue a rare red heat-health alert. Even though these figures only cover a two-month window, they already surpass the total number of heat-related deaths recorded across the entire previous year. Experts studying the data believe that roughly 42 percent of these deaths can be traced back to the effects of human-driven climate change. That estimate has reignited concern among scientists and public health officials, who warn that healthcare systems and at-risk populations are facing mounting pressure as extreme heat becomes more frequent. The crisis is not confined to the UK alone. Neighboring countries have also been hit hard, with wildfires sweeping through parts of France, Spain, and Greece. These fires have claimed the lives of several firefighters, forced thousands of residents to evacuate, and caused major disruptions to businesses and travel throughout the affected areas. France’s national health agency confirmed on Wednesday that the country recorded 5,764 excess deaths between June 17 and July 2 alone. Germany has faced a similarly troubling situation, with its national health body, the RKI, reporting on Thursday that around 9,800 people have died from heat-related causes so far this year. As temperatures remain stubbornly high across Europe, health officials continue urging caution, particularly for elderly individuals and those with existing health conditions who face the greatest risk during prolonged heat events.

PEMRA fines news channel Rs10 million, bans Fiza Ali show

Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting convened a high profile session at the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) headquarters, revealing pressing issues affecting Pakistan’s media sector, including heavy fines, project funding discrepancies, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The session, chaired by Mr. Pullain Baloch, highlighted a landmark enforcement action where Local News Channel was fined 10 million PKR for serious content violations, a penalty exceeding the typical 1 million PKR limit due to the case’s gravity. Officials confirmed the amount had been deposited into the Federal Consolidated Fund to maintain regulatory compliance. The committee also examined entertainment content, focusing on morning shows. A notable case involved performer Fiza Ali, whose program was removed from broadcast for airing content deemed inappropriate for family audiences. Despite this, her social media activity remained outside PEMRA’s jurisdiction, highlighting regulatory gaps in digital media oversight. Another key revelation was a coordinated cyber attack in March 2024, targeting Geo News, Abb Takk, Hum TV, and ARY. Satellite transmissions were compromised, and social media accounts were hacked. PEMRA has mandated all licensees to undergo cybersecurity audits and upgrade their systems by August 2026 to prevent future breaches. Worker welfare and salary recovery were also discussed. The PEMRA Council of Complaints reported 437 complaints regarding unpaid wages, with successful recoveries, notably at Bol TV. The committee directed that government advertisement clearances be linked to the timely payment of staff salaries. Discrepancies in staffing at regional stations were flagged, with Khairpur station employing 49 staff compared to 75–89 staff in other regional hubs like Quetta and Peshawar, raising concerns about resource allocation and operational efficiency. MNA Sehar Kamran raised serious objections regarding the 2026-27 Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). She questioned the increase from 14 projects costing 12.3 billion PKR to 17 projects totaling 14.5 billion PKR, including 10 unapproved projects, demanding transparency on decision-making and additional expenditures. The committee also reviewed violations by an entertainment channel airing content described as “excessively liberal,” which prompted discussions about the absence of a pre censorship system to prevent public offense. The session underscored ongoing challenges in media regulation, project oversight, cybersecurity, and worker protections, highlighting the need for stronger accountability and transparent implementation of government directives.

LHC judge steps aside from bail hearing in Libya b…

LAHORE: Lahore High Court ( LHC) Justice Ghulam Sarwar Nihang has recused himself from hearing the post-arrest bail petition of a suspect allegedly linked to the Libyan boat tragedy. The case involving accused Shafaqat Ali was taken up by the Lahore High Court, where Justice Nihang informed the court that he had previously served as a member of the commission formed to investigate the Libya shipwreck. Given his previous involvement with the commission, the judge said he did not consider it appropriate to hear the bail petition concerning the same matter. The case record was subsequently referred to the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court for further proceedings. During the hearing, the defence counsel argued that bail had already been granted to suspects in several similar cases and requested that Shafaqat Ali also be released on bail until the trial court reaches a decision. The case is part of investigations launched following the Libyan boat accident. The Federal Investigation Agency’s Mandi Bahauddin office has registered cases against suspects allegedly connected to the incident. In a related development, another accused, Muhammad Tahir, has also been granted post-arrest bail in the Libya boat tragedy case.

Zelenskiy accuses Russia of targeting world food s…

Ukraine and Russia traded accusations of lethal attacks on Sunday, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy saying Moscow deliberately targeted global food security by striking the seaport at Odesa. Three people died and 37 sustained injuries in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv after a multi storey apartment block took a direct hit. Across the border, authorities in Russia’s Belgorod region reported that a Ukrainian drone attack killed five people and wounded 25 others. Odesa seaport takes major damage Zelenskiy said a strike had damaged Odesa’s seaport, a critical hub for Ukraine’s agricultural exports. Local authorities reported that dozens of drones and missiles struck the southern seaside city, wounding a dozen people in the process. “In this way, the Russians are at war with the world’s food security,” Zelenskiy said, framing the attack as part of a broader effort by Moscow to disrupt global grain supplies that flow through Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. The Ukrainian president said Russia also struck nine other regions across the country on Sunday, extending the assault well beyond Odesa alone. Russia has spent months bombarding Odesa in a sustained campaign aimed at cutting Ukraine off from the Black Sea and choking its export routes. Ihor, a 67 year old Odesa resident whose apartment narrowly avoided destruction in the latest strikes, said residents have grown accustomed to the danger. “Everyone who lives in Odesa knows that the most common target is around the port area,” he said. Ukraine strikes Russian oil tankers in response As Ukraine works to choke off the revenue Russia relies on to fund its war effort, Kyiv’s forces have repeatedly targeted Russian oil tankers and other cargo vessels moving through the Black Sea. Ukrainian forces claimed three additional strikes on such vessels on Sunday alone. Both countries have widened their campaigns against each other’s logistics networks in recent months. E-commerce warehouses on both sides of the border and Ukrainian petrol stations have come under sustained attack throughout the summer. Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz reported a significant rise in attacks on its facilities over the past three days, including strikes on oil extraction sites overnight. Ukraine’s energy ministry said Russian forces also struck power facilities in the Odesa region, cutting electricity to a substantial share of the port city’s residents overnight. Power had already been restored to 90,000 consumers by Sunday, the ministry said. Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed striking fuel storage facilities in the ports of Odesa and nearby Chornomorsk, saying the sites were being used to support the Ukrainian military. Pope Leo renews call for peace At the Vatican, Pope Leo used his Sunday address to renew calls for an end to the war, now in its fourth and a half year. Speaking before worshippers gathered for the Angelus prayer, the pontiff said tragic incidents are multiplying across the conflict, leading to a growing number of civilian casualties, including children. The renewed papal appeal comes as both Russia and Ukraine show little sign of scaling back their attacks, with strikes on energy infrastructure, ports and logistics networks continuing to intensify on both sides as the war grinds into its fifth year without a resolution in sight.
