Punjab setting new benchmarks in governance, CM Maryam

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Thursday said the province was setting benchmarks in good governance, development and progress, adding that Punjab had emerged as a leader in every field.

Addressing the passing-out parade of Lady Recruit Course-18 at the Police Training College, Chung, the chief minister said Punjab was the only province where women were serving as chief minister, in the police force, and as commissioners and district police officers (DPOs). She said no force in the world could stop the progress and prosperity of a country where 51 per cent of the population actively contributed to national development.

CM Punjab said she felt immense pride in the courage and determination displayed by Punjab’s daughters, describing each visit to the training college as an emotional experience. She praised the recruits for successfully completing rigorous training, including handling heavy weapons.

Congratulating the families of the recruits, she said the parents deserved equal recognition for encouraging their daughters to serve the nation despite outdated social norms. “As capable as these daughters are, equally remarkable are the parents who sent them to serve the country without caring about obsolete traditions,” she said.

She said the graduating batch of 1,156 women was the largest in Punjab’s history, while more than 6,000 women were already serving in the Punjab Police.

The chief minister said wearing the police uniform marked the beginning of a great responsibility, which had to be fulfilled with honesty, hardwork and justice. Although she did not wear the uniform herself, she said she remained fully conscious of its dignity and sanctity.

She said the government was committed to making Punjab’s cities, roads and streets completely safe for women. Expressing satisfaction over the increasing confidence of women travelling independently on scooters, she said girls going to schools, colleges and workplaces no longer needed anyone’s assistance. “Take out your bike and go, because Punjab is now safe,” she remarked.

CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz claimed that the crime rate in Punjab had reached its lowest level in history. Recalling criticism when she assumed office, she said many believed governance and maintaining law and order were not the responsibility of women. “I was also told that this was not women’s work, but today the way Punjab is progressing is being cited as an example around the world,” she said.

She urged the recruits not to pay attention to those who questioned their abilities and instead focus on physical fitness, professional competence and career development. She encouraged them to exercise regularly, maintain a balanced diet, and strive for higher positions in the police service.

Addressing the Inspector General of Police, she called for paving the way for Punjab’s first female inspector general. “If a woman can become the chief minister, then no position is beyond reach,” she said.

The chief minister said the presence of 1,156 newly-trained women officers in the field would help ensure that no woman in Punjab felt unsafe. She directed the recruits to inspire confidence among the public so that citizens felt protected whenever they saw a police officer.

Referring to women entering different professions, she said many women now drove taxis independently to earn a respectable livelihood, reflecting improved security conditions in the province.

CM Punjab said the Punjab Police had received record and historic investment under her government. She added that unnecessary layers of protocol had been removed and she remained in direct contact with the police force.

She said she had worn the police uniform symbolically to restore the dignity and respect of the force. Whenever questions were raised about the police, she added, she had also accepted responsibility for the institution’s shortcomings.

“We are one team, and it is because of this unity that Punjab is achieving remarkable progress,” she said.

The chief minister said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had established Lahore as a Safe City through a CCTV surveillance system, while the facility was now being expanded to 40 districts across Punjab. She claimed that suspects were now being arrested within two hours and that crime-sensitive districts often went days or even weeks without any major crime being reported.

She advised the recruits never to consider themselves inferior to anyone and urged them to continue improving both personally and professionally. Stressing the importance of continuous learning, she said she herself learned something new every day while managing the affairs of the state and encouraged the recruits to adopt modern methods of smart and proactive policing.

Concluding her address, CM Punjab once again congratulated the parents and said the ceremony had proved that daughters were a source of pride and honour. She remarked that when a father appreciated his daughter, it became a moment of immense pride for the entire family.

Addressing the graduating recruits, she asked, “Daughters of Punjab, are you alert?”

Khuzdar triple murder rocks Balochistan Assembly

The alleged murder of a young woman’s fiancé, uncle and father in Balochistan’s Khuzdar district over a marriage dispute echoed in the Balochistan Assembly, where lawmakers demanded the immediate arrest of the main suspect. During the assembly session chaired by Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, Provincial Minister Ali Madad Jatak informed the house that the suspect allegedly killed the woman’s fiancé after his marriage proposal was rejected. He said the victim’s uncle was also murdered, while the woman was allegedly abducted before being recovered by police. According to the minister, the woman’s father was later shot dead after her video statement highlighting security threats surfaced on social media. Jatak told the assembly that despite two days having passed since the father’s killing, a first information report (FIR) had not yet been registered. He expressed concern over the delay in legal proceedings and called for immediate action against the accused. Opposition Leader Younis Zehri warned that if the suspect was not arrested, the provincial chief minister and the home minister would be held responsible. In protest over the lack of progress, both Zehri and Provincial Minister Ali Madad Jatak staged a walkout from the assembly. Member of the Provincial Assembly Maulana Hidayatur Rehman also voiced serious concern over the incident and demanded the resignation of the provincial home minister. He claimed that those responsible for the crime were widely known and criticised the prevailing law and order situation in the province. Responding to the criticism, Home Minister Zia Langove assured lawmakers that the government was in contact with the affected family and that police had been directed to arrest the suspect without delay. The speaker instructed the Inspector General of Police, the Deputy Inspector General and the Khuzdar district police chief to ensure the suspect’s arrest within two days. He also sought daily progress reports on the investigation before adjourning the assembly session until August 28.

Pakistan dismisses Indian defence minister’s Azad Kashmir threats as attempt to hide domestic turmoil

Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has forcefully rejected comments by his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, who declared that New Delhi would only hold talks on Azad Kashmir, claimed the Pakistani-administered region as an “integral part of India”, and warned that any attempt to undermine Indian sovereignty would invite a “decisive response” from its armed forces. Singh had also accused Islamabad of continuing to sponsor “terrorism” against India. Asif hit back directly, stating that Singh’s aggressive rhetoric was a clear attempt to “deflect the attention from internal turmoil and increasing unrest” following mass protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. He warned New Delhi against distortion and military posturing, emphasising that while Pakistan remains committed to peace, its resolve to defend its sovereignty is absolute and must never be tested. The Pakistani Foreign Office echoed these concerns, calling on the United Nations to hold India accountable to Security Council resolutions guaranteeing the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Iran issues fresh warnings as regional tensions es…

Tensions across the Middle East intensified on Saturday as senior Iranian military and political officials issued strong warnings to the United States and its regional partners, while Kuwait reported intercepting drones it said were launched from Iran. Major General Abdollahi, commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, accused Washington of deliberately widening the regional conflict. In a statement shared on X and reported by Iranian state media, he alleged that the United States was pursuing a strategy aimed at expanding the war and increasing its influence across the Middle East. According to Abdollahi, the recent confrontation with Iran demonstrated that Washington was prepared to target the interests and resources of Muslim nations to achieve its objectives. He further claimed that the US was relying on the wealth, infrastructure, and strategic assets of regional countries to protect its military presence while reinforcing Israel’s security. The Iranian commander argued that the balance of power in the region had shifted in Iran’s favor, asserting that the United States and Israel failed to achieve their goals during the latest conflict. He also claimed they were now attempting to continue the confrontation through the territory of neighboring Muslim countries. Abdollahi urged regional governments to reconsider their cooperation with Washington, warning that nations acting as a “defensive shield” for the United States could eventually face the consequences of war. Separately, Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of the parliament’s National Security Commission, warned that any future attack on Iran would have devastating consequences for the region. He claimed that such a conflict could reduce regional infrastructure to the “Stone Age” and cautioned against further military action. Meanwhile, Kuwait strongly condemned what it described as Iranian aggression after reporting drone attacks on key facilities. Kuwaiti authorities said their air defense systems detected and destroyed multiple hostile drones that entered the country’s airspace early Saturday. Officials stated that a government installation in northern Kuwait and civilian vehicles on Bubiyan Island sustained material damage from falling debris, although no casualties were reported. Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry described the attacks as a serious violation of the country’s sovereignty and said it reserved the right to take all necessary measures to protect its national security, interests, and critical infrastructure. Iran also warned that continued US maritime pressure could trigger broader consequences. Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said ongoing American actions could ultimately lead to restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz and other strategic waterways, warning that such developments would have significant consequences for global energy markets and the wider economy. At the same time, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that Iran had emerged victorious from the recent conflict but stressed that the country must strengthen its long-term stability and national resilience. He emphasized expanding the authority of Iran’s supreme leadership as a key step toward securing the country’s future. Elsewhere, maritime security concerns remained high. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a commercial tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, damaging its engine room and leaving it temporarily unable to maneuver. Authorities are investigating the incident. In Yemen, the Houthi movement denied reports that it planned to charge commercial vessels for passage through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, insisting that its maritime transit services remain free. However, the group claimed that its blockade had already forced several Saudi oil tankers to reroute around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, underscoring the continuing disruption to regional shipping routes.
