A partially burnt body discovered inside a car in Karachi’s Surjani Town has been identified through biometric technology after an initial case of mistaken identity complicated the investigation.

According to police, the body was recovered from a vehicle in Shah Beg Goth, located in Karachi’s District West. At first, investigators believed the deceased was 42-year-old Zeeshan Naz, based on documents, a mobile phone, and the vehicle found at the scene. However, when the suspected victim’s family was contacted, they identified the recovered belongings but stated that the body did not belong to their relative.

The conflicting information prompted investigators to expand the scope of their inquiry. Police used biometric verification and other technical methods to establish the victim’s identity. The biometric scan confirmed that the deceased was 38-year-old Qurban Hussain, son of Ghulam Sabir Khan.

After confirming the identity, police traced and contacted the victim’s family. Authorities said Qurban Hussain originally belonged to Muzaffargarh but had been living with his wife in North Karachi Sector 7-A, where he worked as a sanitation worker.

His wife, Sakina Bibi, later identified the body, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding the victim’s identity. Police said the discovery marks significant progress in the investigation, although several questions about the case remain unanswered.

Investigators are now trying to determine how the victim ended up inside the vehicle and the circumstances that led to his death. They are also searching for the individual connected to the documents and mobile phone recovered from the car, as those items do not belong to the deceased. Authorities believe tracing that person could provide important leads in the homicide investigation.

Police have confirmed that a murder case is being registered, and further investigations are underway to identify those responsible. Forensic evidence, digital records, and witness statements are expected to play a key role in uncovering the sequence of events.

The case highlights the importance of biometric technology in criminal investigations, particularly when victims are difficult to identify due to the condition of the body. By combining forensic techniques with technical investigations, law enforcement officials were able to establish the victim’s identity despite the initial confusion.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive or announced any arrests. Investigators say they are pursuing multiple leads and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not address frontline shifts directly in his nightly address, but commended Ukrainian units engaged in heavy combat around Dobropillia, Kostiantynivka, and Kramatorsk.

    US President Donald Trump has signed a executive proclamation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, introducing a 15 per cent tariff and minimum import price floors on products made from polysilicon. The critical raw material forms the foundational supply chain for both semiconductor chips and solar panels, a sector currently dominated by Chinese manufacturing. The executive action establishes clear import price thresholds across key processing stages. Under the new policy, raw polysilicon is set at a minimum price floor of $21 per kilogram, while polysilicon ingots and wafers are capped at a floor of $100 per kilogram. Solar cells face a minimum price of $0.22 per watt, and finished solar modules or panels carry a minimum threshold of $0.38 per watt. The order also directs the Commerce Department to establish targeted incentive programs for domestic companies investing in polysilicon production facilities. While semiconductor manufacturing accounts for roughly 2.4 per cent of global polysilicon demand, the material’s economic viability depends directly on the volume scale maintained by solar manufacturing. US solar manufacturers and polysilicon producers, including Corning, Hemlock Semiconductor, Wacker Chemie, First Solar, and Qcells, welcomed the strategic protections as essential for safeguarding domestic supply chains necessary for advanced computing and renewable energy. The new trade protections take effect on 4 December 2026, granting buyers a four-month window to adjust existing supply contracts before the higher price thresholds apply.

    NCCIA summons Asad Toor over ‘false information?…

    The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned journalist Asad Ali Toor for questioning over allegations of spreading false or misleading information online. According to the notice issued by the agency, the state has been named as the complainant in the case. The inquiry relates to allegations of the dissemination, transmission or public display of information described as false or fake. The proceedings have been initiated under Section 26A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016, which deals with the dissemination of false and fake information. The NCCIA has directed Toor to appear before its Cybercrime Reporting Centre in Islamabad at 11am on July 31. The notice warned that failure to appear without a lawful reason could result in the inquiry continuing in his absence. The agency said non-compliance could also lead to action under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which concerns failure to attend when ordered by a public servant. Toor confirmed receiving the summons through a post on X. He shared an image of the notice and accompanied it with verses by revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. The development has also raised concerns among journalist organisations over press freedom and the treatment of journalists facing legal proceedings. The National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad criticised the notice and expressed concern over what it described as growing pressure on the media. The press club said freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution. It argued that journalists should not face legal pressure or retaliation simply for carrying out their professional responsibilities or expressing critical views. The NPC called on relevant institutions to perform their duties within the framework of the law, the Constitution and fundamental rights. It also stressed that free, responsible and safe journalism is essential for a healthy democratic system. The press body urged authorities to withdraw the notice and ensure that journalists’ constitutional and legal rights are protected. It also warned that measures restricting press freedom could create further insecurity among members of the journalist community. This is not the first time Toor has faced legal action under cybercrime laws. He was arrested in 2024 in a case registered under Peca over allegations of running a campaign against state institutions. His arrest at the time prompted criticism from sections of the journalist community. He was subsequently released.

    EU plans sweeping new sanctions on Russia

    The European Union is preparing its most extensive round of sanctions against Russia since the war in Ukraine began, with the proposed measures aimed primarily at Moscow’s military-industrial complex. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told German newspaper Die Welt that the new sanctions would significantly increase pressure on Russia and could raise the number of sanctioned Russian individuals and entities by about one-third. EU diplomatic sources said the European External Action Service is expected to propose sanctions against around 1,600 people and entities linked to Russia’s defence sector. The proposed measures would include asset freezes as well as travel and transaction restrictions. The EU has already sanctioned nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and companies. According to EU diplomatic sources, the new list could be presented to member states in early September, with formal adoption targeted for October. Unlike broader sanctions packages, the proposed designations are not expected to include new sector-wide restrictions, a move intended to speed up approval. Kallas said the EU would continue increasing economic pressure until Moscow ends its war in Ukraine. However, EU sanctions require unanimous approval from all member states, and previous measures have faced delays because of disagreements among countries. The latest move comes as the EU seeks to strengthen its pressure on Russia while avoiding the lengthy disputes that have complicated previous sanctions packages.
