WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Tuesday, as the wars involving Iran and Ukraine enter what officials describe as a decisive and highly sensitive phase.

The two leaders are in Washington to attend a memorial service for Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican ally of Trump and a strong advocate of military support for Ukraine. However, the diplomatic spotlight has shifted to their separate meetings with the US president, which are expected to focus on two of the world’s most volatile conflicts.

Trump’s relationship with Zelensky has improved significantly in recent months as Ukrainian forces have slowed Russian advances and intensified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Ahead of his meeting, Zelensky said strengthening anti-ballistic missile defence and expanding strategic cooperation with the United States were his top priorities, stressing that efforts to bring peace closer must continue.

Despite renewed diplomatic contacts, there is little indication that either the Ukraine war or the widening confrontation involving Iran is nearing an end. Following the collapse of a ceasefire linked to the Iran conflict, Trump has said he paused US airstrikes to allow diplomacy another opportunity, while continuing consultations with regional allies.

Netanyahu arrives in Washington amid signs of growing frustration within theWhite House over the lack of progress toward a broader settlement related to Iran. Tensions between Trump and the Israeli leader have become more visible in recent weeks, including reports of a heated phone conversation in June that was later publicly acknowledged by Trump.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, Netanyahu is also seeking to reinforce his political standing ahead of Israel’s October 27 election. A public display of close coordination with Trump could help him domestically, where he has faced pressure in opinion polls.

Before departing for Washington, Netanyahu said the talks would focus primarily on Iran, while also addressing regional security and efforts to expand peace agreements with Arab states. A White House official said Trump plans to discuss the Iran conflict, tensions between Israel and Lebanon, and the future of the Abraham Accords.

The administration is reportedly continuing efforts to encourage Saudi Arabia to join the accords, although Riyadh has maintained that any normalisation with Israel would require a credible pathway toward Palestinian statehood.

Trump struck a notably warmer tone when speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, describing Netanyahu as a strong wartime leader and saying the two had worked well together.Zelensky is expected to hold a brief private meeting with Trump, likely without media present. Ukrainian officials say securing additional Patriot missile interceptors is their most urgent request, as Russian missile and drone attacks continue almost daily.

The Ukrainian president is also expected to push for expanded air-defence cooperation, progress on a drone agreement with the United States, and discussions on Trump’s proposal to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptors under licence.

White House officials said the meeting with Zelensky would focus on the ongoing peace process between Russia and Ukraine and reiterated that the administration believes the time has come to seek an end to the war.

After the White House talks, Zelensky is expected to visit Capitol Hill for meetings with all 100 US senators, underscoring the continuing bipartisan interest in Ukraine’s defence despite growing debate over the pace and delivery of American military assistance.

The system will also replace conventional paperwork for departmental digital notes, approval of visiting faculty payments, purchase requests and meeting agendas. As a result, the traditional practice of physically moving files from one office to another will be eliminated. Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Umar Chaudhry described the move as an important milestone in the university’s digital transformation. He said paperless administration was not merely an environmental initiative but represented a structural shift towards greater transparency, efficiency and accountability. He added that eliminating administrative delays and manual file tracking would allow faculty members and heads of departments to devote more time and attention to teaching and research. He said the initiative could position GCU as a leading example of digital transformation among public-sector universities in Punjab. According to a university spokesperson, the paperless system is part of a broader digitalisation programme launched under the vice chancellor’s leadership during the previous academic year. The university had already introduced online approval mechanisms for student society events and digital billing for payments to visiting faculty. GCU is also preparing to launch a comprehensive e-Services Portal aimed at improving campus facilities. The upcoming platform will enable staff to submit maintenance requests and seek other support services digitally, helping resolve infrastructure-related issues more efficiently without disrupting academic activities. The university’s digital transformation is also extending beyond the campus. Work is underway to digitise the records of its alumni, further expanding the institution’s efforts to establish a modern, technology-based administrative system.

      Lahore, July 2026: HomeNet Pakistan, in partnership with AwazCDS/PDA, organized a high-level policy dialogue with Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), including members of the Standing Committee on Local Government, to discuss legislative reforms aimed at promoting a stronger, more inclusive, and constitutionally compliant local government system in Punjab. The dialogue brought together parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and governance experts to exchange views on the future of local governance and explore ways to strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots level. The session focused on ensuring political continuity, enhancing public participation, and improving the effectiveness of elected local governments.   Opening the event, Mr. Zia ur Rehman, Chief Executive of AwazCDS-Pakistan, highlighted the constitutional importance of Article 140A, which requires the devolution of political, administrative, and financial authority to elected local governments. He stressed that an effective local government system is essential for democratic governance and improved public service delivery. He urged the Punjab Assembly to introduce legal and institutional reforms that would safeguard democratic continuity, ensure the timely conduct of local government elections, and strengthen the autonomy of elected local bodies.   During the session, Ms. Ume Laila Azhar, Executive Director of HomeNet Pakistan, presented a set of policy recommendations designed to reinforce democratic governance at the local level. She emphasized the need for a stable and party-based electoral framework for local governments, noting that frequent legislative changes have weakened institutional continuity. She referred to the replacement of the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 with the Punjab Local Government Act 2025 as an example of policy shifts that have contributed to delays in restoring elected local governments across the province. She called for legal safeguards to prevent repeated delimitations and unnecessary postponements of local government elections. HomeNet Pakistan also recommended a transparent and representative mechanism for filling reserved seats allocated to women, youth, minorities, workers, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. According to the organization, such measures would promote broader democratic participation and ensure that local governments better reflect the diversity of society.   In addition, the organization emphasized the importance of returning key municipal responsibilities—including water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and local infrastructure development—to elected local governments. It proposed that provincial and district administrations should primarily provide technical guidance and institutional support rather than directly managing these essential services. The dialogue was attended by Ms. Sumbal Malik Hussain, Ms. Fizzah Maimona Rao, Ms. Somia Atta, Ms. Rukhsana Kausar, Ms. Farzana Abbas, Ms. Nasreen Riaz, and Ms. Attia Hanif, alongside representatives from civil society organizations and governance experts. Responding to the recommendations, the participating MPAs appreciated the constructive engagement and acknowledged the importance of strengthening democratic local governance. They reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s commitment to transparency, institutional reforms, and democratic accountability, expressing confidence that these principles would continue to guide the ongoing local government reform process. The parliamentarians informed participants that the delimitation process had made substantial progress, with geographical boundaries largely finalized. They stated that the remaining objections were expected to be addressed by the end of July 2026. Following the completion of the statutory process, they expressed optimism that the election schedule would be announced, paving the way for timely local government elections. The MPAs also committed to sharing the recommendations emerging from the dialogue with the Honorable Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and pledged to advocate for legislative reforms that promote constitutional compliance, political continuity, and an empowered local government system capable of responding effectively to citizens’ needs. Concluding the event, HomeNet Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with parliamentarians, government institutions, and civil society partners to advance democratic governance, strengthen inclusive representation, and support the timely restoration of empowered elected local governments across Punjab.
