West Indies take 29-run lead after bowling out Pak…

Pakistan were dismissed for 282 runs in their first innings on the third day of the opening Test against the West Indies, leaving the hosts with a 29-run first-innings lead. Despite a determined century from captain Shan Masood, Pakistan failed to build on a solid overnight position as the West Indies bowling attack wrapped up the innings effectively.

Resuming the day at 199 for 3, Pakistan appeared well placed to post a competitive total. However, the batting lineup struggled against disciplined bowling, losing wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq, none of the remaining batters managed to make a significant contribution.

Shan Masood led the innings with a composed 109 runs, anchoring Pakistan’s batting effort with patience and confidence. His century proved to be the standout performance for the visitors and demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure in challenging conditions. Imam-ul-Haq also made an important contribution, scoring 63 runs and sharing a valuable partnership with the captain that gave Pakistan a strong foundation.

After the dismissal of the top-order pair, Pakistan’s middle and lower order failed to capitalize on the platform. Regular breakthroughs from the West Indies bowlers prevented the visitors from reaching a larger total, and the innings came to an end after 80.1 overs.

The West Indies bowling attack was led by Justin Greaves, who delivered an outstanding spell to claim five wickets. His consistent line and length troubled Pakistan’s batters throughout the innings and played a key role in restricting the total. Veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach and pace bowler Shamar Joseph picked up two wickets each, while Jayden Seales added one wicket to complete the innings.

With a 29-run lead, the West Indies gained a slight advantage heading into their second innings. However, the match remains evenly balanced, and Pakistan’s bowlers will now aim to make early breakthroughs to keep the contest alive.

As the Test progresses, both teams will look to capitalize on every opportunity in what promises to be an intriguing battle. Pakistan will be encouraged by Shan Masood’s excellent century but will also recognize the need for stronger contributions from the rest of the batting lineup if they hope to secure victory in the series opener.

Homenet Pakistan urges protection of democratic ma…

Lahore, July 2026: HomeNet Pakistan, in partnership with AwazCDS/PDA, organized a high-level policy dialogue with Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), including members of the Standing Committee on Local Government, to discuss legislative reforms aimed at promoting a stronger, more inclusive, and constitutionally compliant local government system in Punjab. The dialogue brought together parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and governance experts to exchange views on the future of local governance and explore ways to strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots level. The session focused on ensuring political continuity, enhancing public participation, and improving the effectiveness of elected local governments.   Opening the event, Mr. Zia ur Rehman, Chief Executive of AwazCDS-Pakistan, highlighted the constitutional importance of Article 140A, which requires the devolution of political, administrative, and financial authority to elected local governments. He stressed that an effective local government system is essential for democratic governance and improved public service delivery. He urged the Punjab Assembly to introduce legal and institutional reforms that would safeguard democratic continuity, ensure the timely conduct of local government elections, and strengthen the autonomy of elected local bodies.   During the session, Ms. Ume Laila Azhar, Executive Director of HomeNet Pakistan, presented a set of policy recommendations designed to reinforce democratic governance at the local level. She emphasized the need for a stable and party-based electoral framework for local governments, noting that frequent legislative changes have weakened institutional continuity. She referred to the replacement of the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 with the Punjab Local Government Act 2025 as an example of policy shifts that have contributed to delays in restoring elected local governments across the province. She called for legal safeguards to prevent repeated delimitations and unnecessary postponements of local government elections. HomeNet Pakistan also recommended a transparent and representative mechanism for filling reserved seats allocated to women, youth, minorities, workers, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. According to the organization, such measures would promote broader democratic participation and ensure that local governments better reflect the diversity of society.   In addition, the organization emphasized the importance of returning key municipal responsibilities—including water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and local infrastructure development—to elected local governments. It proposed that provincial and district administrations should primarily provide technical guidance and institutional support rather than directly managing these essential services. The dialogue was attended by Ms. Sumbal Malik Hussain, Ms. Fizzah Maimona Rao, Ms. Somia Atta, Ms. Rukhsana Kausar, Ms. Farzana Abbas, Ms. Nasreen Riaz, and Ms. Attia Hanif, alongside representatives from civil society organizations and governance experts. Responding to the recommendations, the participating MPAs appreciated the constructive engagement and acknowledged the importance of strengthening democratic local governance. They reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s commitment to transparency, institutional reforms, and democratic accountability, expressing confidence that these principles would continue to guide the ongoing local government reform process. The parliamentarians informed participants that the delimitation process had made substantial progress, with geographical boundaries largely finalized. They stated that the remaining objections were expected to be addressed by the end of July 2026. Following the completion of the statutory process, they expressed optimism that the election schedule would be announced, paving the way for timely local government elections. The MPAs also committed to sharing the recommendations emerging from the dialogue with the Honorable Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and pledged to advocate for legislative reforms that promote constitutional compliance, political continuity, and an empowered local government system capable of responding effectively to citizens’ needs. Concluding the event, HomeNet Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with parliamentarians, government institutions, and civil society partners to advance democratic governance, strengthen inclusive representation, and support the timely restoration of empowered elected local governments across Punjab.

Capital one defends closure of Trump organization accounts

Capital One Financial has responded to a lawsuit filed over its decision to close bank accounts linked to the Trump Organization, arguing that the move was based on internal anti-money laundering reviews rather than political or ideological motivations. The bank, in a legal filing submitted on Friday, stated that it closed the accounts following a detailed assessment conducted by its anti-money laundering (AML) specialists. The company argued that the decision was made after months of analysis and was consistent with its internal policies as well as regulatory requirements. The filing represents the first time a major bank has publicly connected concerns related to money laundering risks with its decision to end a banking relationship involving the Trump family business. However, Capital One clarified that it has never accused the Trump Organization of committing illegal money laundering activities. Instead, the bank said that the account closures were the result of routine compliance procedures. Capital One argued that documents presented in the case, along with the plaintiffs’ own claims, demonstrate that the decision was related to AML concerns rather than any attempt to discriminate against the company because of political beliefs. The dispute began after Capital One informed the Trump Organization in March 2021 that it planned to close more than 300 accounts associated with businesses connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Trump Organization and Eric Trump, Trump’s son, later filed a lawsuit in March 2025 in a Florida federal court, claiming that the bank had unfairly “debanked” them because of political pressure and what they described as the company’s “woke” policies. The lawsuit alleged that Capital One’s decision was influenced by the political environment following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The plaintiffs argued that the bank wanted to distance itself from Trump and his supporters during a period of intense public and political scrutiny. A federal court in Miami has already dismissed two versions of the complaint but allowed the plaintiffs opportunities to revise and submit updated claims. Capital One argued in its latest filing that the amended complaint continues to contain the same weaknesses as earlier versions and fails to establish evidence of unlawful discrimination. The bank accused the Trump Organization of presenting selective information and relying on statements taken out of context. Capital One maintained that the allegations of political motivation were unsupported and ignored the broader circumstances behind the account closures. According to the bank’s filing, certain transaction patterns identified during its review matched types of activities that federal banking authorities commonly recognize as requiring additional examination. Capital One said its AML team followed established procedures before reaching the decision to terminate the accounts. The legal battle comes during a broader political debate in the United States over the issue of “debanking,” with some conservatives accusing financial institutions of unfairly targeting individuals and organizations because of their political views. During his second presidential term, Trump’s administration has criticized such practices and taken steps aimed at preventing what it describes as discriminatory banking decisions. The controversy has also involved other major financial institutions. Trump previously filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, making similar allegations regarding political discrimination. During his first term in office, Trump also took legal action against Capital One and Deutsche Bank in an effort to prevent the release of his financial records to Congress. The case continues to highlight the growing tension between banking compliance practices, political concerns, and the debate over whether financial institutions should have broader restrictions on ending relationships with controversial clients.

Why people are belting Disney tunes at smart-glasses wearers

If you suspect someone is secretly filming you with smart glasses, the internet has come up with an unusual defence. People are being told to start singing a Disney song out loud. The idea is not that singing will actually stop the recording itself. Instead, it relies on platforms’ copyright detection systems flagging the music and quietly taking the video down. Most major platforms scan uploaded videos for any copyrighted audio in the background. If a clip contains protected music, it typically gets muted, deleted, or in rarer cases, flagged for legal action. Copyright protection applies to lyrics, composition and melody alike, which means even a rough, off-key rendition can trigger removal. That loophole is exactly what people online are now trying to exploit. This trick has already spread across social media, with people from different countries picking it up. Reactions online have mostly ranged from disbelief to outright frustration at the whole situation. Many users have pointed out the irony that copyrighted music seems to receive stronger legal protection online than personal privacy does. Being filmed without consent, by comparison, often leaves people with far fewer options. Copyright law tends to apply fairly consistently across different countries, but privacy law is a different story entirely. It varies significantly from place to place, leaving many people, especially women, without a reliable way to get unwanted footage removed. The debate has grown louder alongside the rising popularity of smart glasses in everyday life. Meta’s Ray-Ban models have become the clear frontrunner in this fast-growing product category. As more people walk around with cameras built into their glasses, old arguments about filming strangers without consent have resurfaced. The devices have made it easier than ever to record someone without them even realising it. Meta has responded by saying it takes non-consensual filming seriously as a company. It has also made changes to the indicator light that shows when the glasses are actively recording. The company added that it has been removing certain types of content it considers harassment. This includes unsolicited, “pick-up line” style videos aimed at strangers without their consent.

Verity’ trailer unveils a dark new thriller starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway

The first trailer for Verity has arrived, offering audiences an unsettling glimpse at the upcoming psychological thriller starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. Based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name, the Amazon MGM Studios adaptation follows Lowen Ashleigh, played by Johnson, a struggling writer who receives an unexpected opportunity when she is hired to complete a successful author’s unfinished book series. Hathaway portrays Verity Crawford, the celebrated writer whose life changes dramatically after a serious accident leaves her unable to continue working. Lowen travels to the Crawford family’s secluded home to examine Verity’s notes and research for the books, but what initially appears to be a straightforward writing assignment quickly takes a disturbing turn. As Lowen begins sorting through Verity’s personal papers, she discovers a shocking manuscript containing revelations about the Crawford family. The material forces her to question how much she truly knows about Verity, her marriage and the events surrounding the family’s darkest moments. Hartnett stars as Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband and a grieving father whose relationship with Lowen becomes increasingly complicated as she spends more time inside the family home. Directed by Michael Showalter, the film leans heavily into the novel’s atmosphere of suspense, secrecy and psychological uncertainty. The trailer teases a tense dynamic between Johnson, Hathaway and Hartnett, while the isolated Crawford residence becomes an ominous backdrop for Lowen’s investigation. The film’s promotional artwork mirrors that unsettling tone. Its striking poster is divided by a bold letter “V,” accompanied by the ominous tagline, “There is no light where we’re going.” The adaptation is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 2, bringing Hoover’s controversial and twist-filled story to the big screen. The trailer has already generated anticipation among readers familiar with the novel, particularly over how its major revelations will translate to film. With a high-profile cast, a dark premise and a story built around uncertainty, Verity is positioning itself as one of the season’s most closely watched psychological thrillers. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Db6Akt2K-6c/?igsh=MXNodHQ2bTRoNGVlbg==
