    GILGIT: Torrential rains have triggered devastating flash floods, mudslides and landslides across Gilgit-Baltistan, leaving a trail of destruction that has damaged hundreds of homes, swept away bridges and disrupted road links in several districts. In Skardu, rising water levels and flash floods destroyed 15 houses and swept away four bridges, the highest number of bridge losses reported in any district. Ghizer witnessed damage to two dozen homes and one bridge due to flash floods, cloudbursts and river erosion, while Ghanche reported damage to 12 houses and the loss of three bridges. Gilgit district also experienced flooding in several valleys, where eight houses were damaged and around 50 livestock perished, accounting for the highest livestock losses in the region. Although Hunza and Nagar escaped major residential damage, road infrastructure in both districts was affected by flooding and erosion. Relief efforts are continuing in the affected areas. Emergency supplies, including tents, food packs, kitchen sets, plastic mats and bedding, have been distributed among displaced families in Diamer and Skardu. Authorities have also dispatched additional relief consignments to flood-hit valleys to support affected communities. Meanwhile, road clearance operations are underway to restore connectivity. Heavy machinery has been deployed to remove landslide debris along the Jaglot-Skardu Road, where restoration work is progressing at multiple locations. Officials said road networks in Ghizer, Hunza, Shiger and Kharmang have been reopened, while emergency teams and equipment remain on high alert as authorities continue monitoring the evolving situation.

He has claimed that he was forced to drink dirty water, which caused stomach problems, and that loud shouting from nearby prisoners prevented him from sleeping. He has also alleged that he was not given his daily opportunity for exercise. Prosecutors in Miami responded in a court filing on August 10, saying the brothers are being kept in the facility’s Special Housing Unit for their own protection. The BOP said repairs were underway, while several other legal-visit rooms remained available. There have also been problems with the facility’s water pressure and cooling system. Officials said a water-pressure problem occurred on July 1 but was resolved the following day, with bottled water supplied to inmates. An air-conditioning chiller also malfunctioned on July 6 and was later repaired. On July 11, some immigrant detainees reportedly resisted orders to remain in their cells because of the heat. According to the BOP, the situation became confrontational and staff used pepper spray in the air to restore order. The incident remains under investigation. The Tate brothers are expected to ask a federal judge in Miami for bail while they challenge their extradition to Britain.

However, he said the biggest concern preventing many from investing is the fear of fraud and uncertainty over whether their investment will be secure. He said overseas Pakistanis need confidence that the promises made to them will be fulfilled, whether that is receiving ownership of a home or achieving the expected returns on their investment. “It is our responsibility, as Pakistanis, together with the Government of Pakistan and the private sector, to ensure their investments are protected,” he said. Akbar revealed that an online property verification service will be launched in Pakistan next month, allowing overseas buyers to verify the legal status and ownership of properties remotely before making a purchase. He said Pakistanis living in countries such as the UK will be able to check online whether a property in Islamabad has any legal, ownership or other issues before investing, helping them make informed decisions with greater peace of mind. He said the initiative is aimed at improving transparency in Pakistan’s real estate market and reducing the risk of fraudulent transactions, which have discouraged some overseas Pakistanis from investing. Highlighting Pakistan’s investment potential, Akbar said his experience over the past decade has convinced him that the country offers significantly greater growth opportunities than more mature economies. Comparing Islamabad with London, he said the Pakistani capital has witnessed remarkable infrastructure development over the past five to ten years, including new roads, underpasses, motorways, airport expansion and major public infrastructure projects. He said Pakistan’s growing population, expanding infrastructure and status as a developing economy continue to create strong long-term investment opportunities. Akbar also urged the Government of Pakistan to prioritise the protection of overseas Pakistanis’ investments by strengthening legal safeguards and providing greater security for investors. He said giving overseas Pakistanis confidence that their investments are safe would encourage them to invest back home with peace of mind. The online property verification service has yet to be launched, and further details regarding its implementation, regulatory oversight and the mechanism for verifying property records have not yet been disclosed.
