President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, has summoned an important party meeting in Murree on Saturday, August 15, to discuss the formation of a new government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to party sources, the meeting will focus primarily on the political situation in AJK and the formation of the government following the recent elections to the AJK Legislative Assembly. Senior PML-N leaders are expected to hold detailed consultations on the party’s strategy and discuss possible arrangements for forming the government in the region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, former Punjab Chief Minister and senior PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz, federal ministers and other senior party leaders are expected to attend the meeting in Murree.

All nine newly elected PML-N members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly have also been invited to participate in the meeting, according to sources. Their presence is expected to be particularly important as the party leadership considers its options for government formation and seeks their input on the political situation in AJK.

The meeting is likely to provide the PML-N leadership with an opportunity to assess the election results and discuss the next political steps. Party leaders are expected to deliberate on potential candidates for key positions and determine how the party will proceed with its government-formation efforts.

Nawaz Sharif, as president of the PML-N, is expected to lead the consultations and seek the views of senior party figures as well as the newly elected AJK assembly members. The participation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also indicates the importance the party leadership is attaching to developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

    Karachi Court orders Mir Ali Raza’s exhumation

    KARACHI: A judicial magistrate’s court in Karachi has approved a plea seeking the exhumation of businessman Mir Ali Raza’s body, directing the Sindh Health Secretary to immediately constitute a medical board to oversee the process. The Judicial Magistrate (East) announced the decision on Thursday after reserving its verdict following arguments from both sides. The court instructed the relevant authorities to complete the exhumation as soon as possible to facilitate a fresh medical examination. During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner argued that the police had no legal grounds to object to the exhumation, maintaining that the procedure would be carried out under the supervision of the Police Surgeon and the Medical Legal Officer (MLO), as required under the law. The lawyer further informed the court that the Police Surgeon had identified several deficiencies in the initial post-mortem report. According to the submissions, no X-rays were conducted, the exact cause of death was not conclusively established, and the report was allegedly prepared on assumptions rather than comprehensive medical findings. The court questioned how such an order could be passed without first issuing notice to the investigating officer. In response, the government prosecutor stated that the prosecution had no objection to the exhumation, describing the matter as one involving the search for the truth in a human life. The petitioner’s counsel argued that notifying the investigating officer at this stage could unnecessarily delay the proceedings and affect the timely collection of forensic evidence. After noting the prosecution’s no-objection stance, the court accepted the family’s application and directed the Health Secretary to form a medical board without delay. The board will supervise the exhumation and carry out the necessary medical examination to help determine the cause of death more accurately. The case has drawn public attention following questions raised by the deceased’s family over the circumstances surrounding Mir Ali Raza’s death and the quality of the initial forensic investigation. Qualified instructors from various fields conducted training in Swimming, Judo, Arts and Crafts, Communication Skills, Handwriting and Manners, along with classes on the Holy Quran and Islamic teachings. Sports and recreational activities were also arranged to promote fitness, teamwork and discipline. The concluding ceremony was held at NAB Lahore under the supervision of DG Mirza Faran Baig and attended by children, officers and instructors. Renowned singer Jawad Ahmad also graced the occasion as a Special Guest. The children showcased their learning through speeches, poems, artwork and earned appreciation from the audience. They described the camp as a memorable experience that helped them learn new skills in a positive environment. A video prepared by the Media Cell, NAB Lahore was also screened, highlighting key activities and moments from the camp. In his address, DG NAB Lahore said that such initiatives help develop children’s hidden talents and build confidence. He appreciated the children’s performance and the efforts of instructors and coordinators in making the camp successful. He added that NAB Lahore, in line with the vision of the Chairman NAB, remains committed to support the personality development of the next generation for a brighter future of the country. The ceremony also included a magic show and special Independence Day performances by the children. Singer Jawad Ahmad also performed for the participants, while Zamzam Group, Dubai joined online and distributed prizes during a question-and-answer session. At the end, DG NAB Lahore Mirza Faran Baig distributed certificates and gifts among the children and instructors. The event concluded with a group photograph, marking a memorable end to the camp.

    MQM-P groups resume talks after Bahadurabad clash

    Differences between two groups within the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have led to renewed contacts and negotiations between the rival factions, according to party sources. The dispute reportedly surfaced after a party meeting at the MQM-P headquarters in Bahadurabad, Karachi. Tensions escalated during the incident, with members of one group allegedly engaging in a physical confrontation with MPA Ijazul Haq, party leader Zakir, and their supporters. MQM-P leader Aminul Haq claimed that members of the opposing group also resorted to intense aerial firing during the confrontation. He said one party worker sustained injuries in the firing, while several others were hurt as a result of stone-pelting. Following the escalation, senior leaders from both sides have started communicating with each other in an effort to ease tensions and resolve their differences through dialogue. Party sources said the two groups are currently holding discussions and exploring ways to settle the dispute. The sources added that the two factions may hold a joint press conference within the next 48 hours. During the press conference, the leadership is expected to outline the party’s future course of action and announce decisions aimed at addressing the internal differences. The developments come as the party seeks to prevent further escalation and restore unity among its ranks following the clash at the Bahadurabad headquarters.

  • Nikahnama rules face review, registrars could face jail

    Islamabad: Pakistan’s marriage law could face a major review after a parliamentary committee questioned the existing legal provision dealing with second marriage, while a separate proposal seeks jail time and a fine for Nikah registrars who fail to complete a Nikahnama properly. The Council of Islamic Ideology also agreed that the second marriage issue required reconsideration and said it would work towards a new legal framework based on the Quran and Sunnah. The discussion took place during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony. One main issue was a proposed amendment to the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance. The proposal seeks to make it compulsory for every Nikah registrar or Nikah Khawan to accurately fill all columns of the Nikahnama using information given by the bride and groom under oath. Under the proposed law, failure to properly complete the Nikahnama could lead to simple imprisonment of up to one month and a fine of Rs 25,001. The punishment has only been proposed and has not yet become law. The Council of Islamic Ideology supported the proposal requiring Nikah registrars to correctly complete the Nikahnama. However, the council raised objections to some other proposed changes in the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, particularly amendments involving Sections 6 and 7. The CII said those proposed provisions were inconsistent with its understanding of Islamic injunctions. The discussion then moved to one of the most sensitive parts of Pakistan’s marriage law: the existing provision dealing with a second marriage. The committee chairman questioned whether the current legal requirement should continue in its present form and said the provision should be reconsidered according to Shariah principles. The Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology agreed that the matter required another review. He told the committee that the council would work towards proposing a new legal framework based on the Quran and Sunnah. No final change to the second marriage law was approved during the meeting. The issue will require further consideration before any new legal framework can become law. Another major part of the discussion concerned the Nikahnama itself. Senator Sarmad Ali proposed changes to make the Nikahnama easier for people to understand. The proposal aims to remove unclear wording from the headings of different columns so that brides, grooms and Nikah registrars are less likely to misunderstand what information is required. The committee was informed that the government had already discussed implementation of updated Nikahnama forms with the Ministry of Interior and the Islamabad administration. The concerned department was expected to print and circulate the revised Nikahnama forms in Islamabad and provide a report on implementation. However, the committee was told that a response from the concerned authorities was still awaited. The proposed reforms could make the Nikahnama more important than simply being a marriage registration document. If the proposed amendment is approved, Nikah registrars would carry a clear legal responsibility to ensure that every required column is filled correctly according to the information provided by both the bride and groom. The proposed punishment is intended to discourage incomplete forms and incorrect entries. Supporters of the change believe clearer Nikahnama forms could reduce confusion and disputes that may arise when important marriage conditions are left blank or written unclearly. At the same time, the debate over second marriage could become a much larger legal and religious issue. The committee has not recommended the removal or replacement of the existing provision at this stage. Instead, the matter is expected to be examined further with input from the Council of Islamic Ideology. The committee also decided that relevant provisions of the proposed marriage law amendments would be reconsidered after reviewing the CII recommendations. For now, the two major Nikah related developments are clear. Lawmakers are considering stronger responsibility and possible punishment for Nikah registrars who fail to properly complete marriage documents, while the existing law governing second marriage has also been opened for possible review under a new framework based on Islamic principles.
