ECC to review Rs1.34 hike in dealers’ margin

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is set to consider a proposal to increase the margin of petroleum dealers.

The meeting will be held on Friday evening. Federal Finance Minister will chair the session. The meeting is scheduled for 6pm.

According to sources, the increase in petroleum dealers’ margins is the only item on the agenda. The committee will examine a proposal for a Rs1.34 per litre increase.

Petroleum dealers currently receive a margin of Rs8.64 per litre on petroleum products. If approved, the proposed increase will raise the margin to Rs9.98 per litre.

The proposal comes after discussions between the government and representatives of petroleum dealers. During those talks, the government had assured dealers that their margin would be increased.

Dealers have been seeking an adjustment in their margin amid rising operational expenses. They argue that higher costs have affected the profitability of their businesses.

The ECC will review the proposal and decide whether the increase should be approved. The committee’s decision will determine the next steps for implementing the proposed adjustment.

Any increase in the dealers’ margin could also affect the overall pricing structure of petroleum products. The final impact will depend on how the government incorporates the additional margin into the pricing mechanism.

Kuwait keeps bottled water purchase limit to prevent panic buying

Kuwait’s Ministry of Social Affairs has confirmed that restrictions on bottled water purchases will remain in place as part of efforts to discourage panic buying and ensure supplies remain available for everyone. Under the current rules, shoppers can buy no more than five cartons of bottled water per invoice at central markets and cooperative society branches across the country. The ministry said all cooperative societies are required to enforce the purchase limit without exception. Officials have instructed the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies to make sure every branch follows the directive and prevents customers from making unusually large purchases. Authorities believe the measure will help stop unnecessary stockpiling that could leave other shoppers without access to essential supplies. According to officials, the restriction is purely a precaution and should not be seen as a sign of a shortage. The ministry stressed that bottled water production remains stable and factories continue to operate at full capacity. Regular deliveries are being made to markets and cooperative stores, ensuring that supplies remain sufficient to meet consumer demand. Officials explained that the temporary limit is designed to promote fair distribution and prevent panic buying during the current situation. They said excessive purchasing by a small number of customers can quickly create empty shelves, increase crowding at stores and trigger unnecessary public concern even when supplies remain adequate. The ministry also confirmed that it is closely monitoring the implementation of the policy. Cooperative societies that fail to follow the instructions or violate the regulations could face action from the authorities. Officials urged retailers to strictly apply the purchase limit so that bottled water remains available to all consumers. Residents have been encouraged to buy only the amount they genuinely need and avoid hoarding. The ministry also warned against spreading unverified information or rumors that could create unnecessary fear and encourage panic buying among the public. Officials emphasized that responsible purchasing will help maintain steady supplies and prevent disruption in the market. In a separate development, Kuwait’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry has introduced a new legal framework for e-commerce platforms to improve consumer protection and regulate the country’s rapidly growing online marketplace. The regulations were introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 109 of 2026 and officially came into force on July 8. They apply to all digital platforms involved in selling, ordering and delivering products within Kuwait. The new rules clearly define the responsibilities of online platforms, merchants, delivery companies and consumers. Officials said the regulations are intended to create a more transparent business environment while encouraging fair competition and supporting future investment in the digital economy. Under the updated framework, companies operating electronic platforms must obtain the required licences and comply with existing laws. They are also required to strengthen cybersecurity measures and protect their digital systems and customer information from cyberattacks, data breaches and misuse. Authorities believe the updated regulations will help build greater public confidence in online shopping while ensuring higher standards of safety and accountability across Kuwait’s expanding e-commerce sector.

UK government unveils £130m boost for zero-emission vehicle technology

The British government has announced a joint public-private investment package worth nearly £130 million to advance zero-emission vehicle technologies across the United Kingdom. The funding model combines almost £65 million in public investment alongside matching contributions from private automotive industry partners. Under the initiative, nearly £50 million in government grants will go directly to car manufacturers and research institutions to develop and scale clean vehicle tech. An additional £17 million has been allocated to nine projects targeting connected and automated mobility, including advanced sensors, brake-by-wire systems, and artificial intelligence simulation platforms. Industry Minister Blair McDougall stated that the package aims to secure the future of British manufacturing, noting that the country is determined to ensure next-generation vehicles are designed and produced domestically. The financial injection aligns with the UK’s legal mandate to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, ahead of a complete transition to zero-emission new vehicles by 2035.

  • July’s buck moon peaks this week, and wildfire smoke may turn it orange

This week brings July’s full moon, known as the buck moon, which reaches peak illumination at 10:36 a.m. ET on Wednesday, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanack. Even though the exact peak passes quickly, the moon will look full to the naked eye for about a day on either side of that moment, so there is no rush to catch it at the precise minute. Viewing conditions will differ depending on where you are. Those in the Northern Hemisphere will see the moon sitting relatively low in the sky, while Southern Hemisphere viewers get a higher vantage point, though still not as high as what June’s full moon offered, according to EarthSky. Astrologically, this year’s buck moon falls under Aquarius, though it is worth noting that the zodiac sign does not necessarily match the constellation the moon is actually passing through. Noah Petro, who heads the Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Lab at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said there is flexibility in how and where people view it, as long as they find a spot away from bright city lights with a clear line of sight to the sky. Viewers in the Northeast and Upper Midwest may notice something different this time around: the moon appearing more orange or red than usual. That’s being linked to smoke drifting down from wildfires burning in Canada, which has settled into the atmosphere as a haze. Pamela Gay, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, explained that the same smoky layer responsible for dimming daytime skies is also what’s tinting the moon’s color. As for the name itself, “buck moon” refers to the time of year when male deer begin growing new antlers. Other cultures have their own names for this particular full moon. The Dakota call it the moon of ripe chokecherries, while the Cree know it as the feather-moulting moon. Petro also drew a connection to NASA’s Artemis II mission, which sent four astronauts on a flight around the moon back in April, describing moments like this full moon as a reminder of humanity’s ongoing connection to what is happening on the moon itself. Looking ahead, five more full moons remain on the calendar for 2026, with November and December set to bring supermoons, when the moon reaches its closest approach to Earth.

    Bangladesh hints at joining Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiy…

DHAKA: Bangladesh has signalled that it could consider joining the emerging economic or defence framework involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, opening a potentially significant new chapter in regional diplomacy and security cooperation. Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said Dhaka was taking a positive view of the possibility of becoming part of a framework involving the three countries. His comments come only weeks after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. The agreement, signed in Makkah on Aug 7, commits the three countries to strengthening collective security and defence cooperation. It also states that an armed attack against any one of the three signatories would be regarded as an attack against all three. Kabir, speaking to Bangladesh’s state news agency, indicated that Dhaka would examine the idea through the lens of its own national interests and the rapidly changing global economic and trade environment. “The government is following a Bangladesh First policy,” Kabir said, according to reports, stressing that national interests remain at the centre of Dhaka’s foreign policy. The remarks are particularly noteworthy because Bangladesh has recently been working to strengthen practical ties with Pakistan. Kabir said the two countries were seeking greater cooperation in trade and people-to-people contacts, suggesting that economic engagement could form an important part of the relationship. For Pakistan, Bangladesh’s interest could give the Makkah framework a wider South Asian dimension. For Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, Dhaka’s possible participation could also expand the reach of an arrangement that the signatories have described as defensive rather than directed against any particular country. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the agreement is open to other friendly countries seeking peace, prosperity and stability in the region. Turkish officials have also stressed that the pact does not identify a common enemy and is intended to strengthen defence cooperation and collective deterrence. Bangladesh’s possible move comes as Dhaka is also deepening its relationship with Saudi Arabia. Kabir said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit Saudi Arabia following an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The visit could provide an opportunity for discussions on economic cooperation, regional security and Bangladesh’s possible role in broader regional frameworks. For now, Dhaka has not announced any formal decision to join the defence agreement. But its positive signal is already attracting attention, particularly because Bangladesh’s participation could reshape the strategic picture across South Asia and the wider Muslim world. The next step will likely depend on how Dhaka assesses the proposed framework against its national interests, economic priorities and wider foreign-policy objectives.
