LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the Commonwealth during a meeting with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey at Marlborough House in London on Wednesday.

As a founding member of the Commonwealth, Senator Dar reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Secretary-General’s vision to strengthen the organisation and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing the Commonwealth’s agenda on youth empowerment, climate resilience and sustainable economic development.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised the importance of promoting intra-Commonwealth trade through institutionalised cooperation between banking sectors, saying stronger financial connectivity would help unlock greater economic opportunities for member states.

Highlighting Pakistan’s expertise in climate change mitigation and disaster management, Senator Dar said Commonwealth countries could benefit from Pakistan’s experience in responding to natural disasters. He renewed Pakistan’s offer to host the proposed Commonwealth Disaster Resilience Hub at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Islamabad.

Secretary-General Botchwey welcomed Pakistan’s offer and said the Commonwealth Secretariat looked forward to working closely with Islamabad to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience across member states.

The two leaders also agreed to expand cooperation on youth development under Pakistan’s co-chairmanship of the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (CYMM). They underscored the importance of creating greater opportunities for young people through enhanced Commonwealth programmes and initiatives.

During the meeting, Senator Dar briefed the Secretary-General on recent developments in the Middle East, including Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in helping broker peace between the United States and Iran.

Secretary-General Botchwey congratulated Pakistan, particularly Senator Dar, for his sustained diplomatic engagement and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran. She thanked him for helping avert a potentially destructive conflict and for making a significant contribution to regional peace and stability.

The meeting reflected Pakistan’s continued commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation through the Commonwealth while promoting dialogue, disaster resilience, youth development and international peace.

The judge made the remarks during the hearing of a case in which Supreme Court Bar Association President Haroon Rashid appeared before the court. Justice Soomro said he felt deeply disappointed after observing the attitude of some lawyers in Islamabad. He said lawyers were expected to cooperate with the court and maintain a respectful environment during proceedings. The judge observed that lawyers in Islamabad did not provide the level of assistance that he expected. He said the behaviour he had witnessed was painful and disappointing. Justice Soomro also referred to his background. He said he belonged to a village where people did not behave in such a manner. He remarked that even in his hometown, people showed greater respect while communicating with one another. “I came here to learn, but I did not learn anything,” the judge said while expressing his disappointment over the situation. He further criticised the manner in which some people spoke in the courtroom. He said it was regrettable to see people using inappropriate or disrespectful language during legal proceedings. Justice Soomro asked the Supreme Court Bar president to take up the matter with lawyers’ representative bodies. He urged him to visit the bar council and bar association and advise lawyers to maintain professional standards. The judge stressed that Islamabad was the federal capital. He said lawyers practising in the capital should demonstrate responsible and professional conduct. Addressing Haroon Rashid, Justice Soomro said he was the president of one of the country’s largest and most influential bar associations. He asked him to play an active role in guiding lawyers and improving the atmosphere in courts. The judge’s remarks highlighted the importance of discipline, mutual respect and cooperation between lawyers and judges. He said a healthy courtroom environment was essential for the smooth administration of justice.

    MULTAN: In a significant development in a cryptocurrency fraud case, the Lahore High Court’s Multan Bench has granted interim bail to Hammad Ali and other co-petitioners, observing that the prosecution has, at this stage, failed to produce sufficient material linking them to the alleged electronic fraud or the freezing of the complainant’s cryptocurrency accounts. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh issued the detailed 15-page judgment while hearing the interim bail petitions, emphasizing that the investigation remains underway and that the available record does not disclose prima facie evidence of cheating, fraud, or forgery against the petitioners. According to the judgment, the allegations contained in the First Information Report (FIR) do not appear, at first glance, to establish the offences alleged against the accused. The court noted that no evidence had been placed on record demonstrating the petitioners’ involvement in electronic fraud or showing that they played any role in freezing the complainant’s cryptocurrency accounts. The court further observed that it is the responsibility of the investigating officer to independently examine the role of each individual account holder before reaching any conclusion regarding criminal liability. The judgment stressed that investigations must be conducted impartially and based on verifiable evidence rather than assumptions. Justice Sheikh also noted that the petitioners had already provided the investigating officer with the records requested during the course of the investigation. The investigating officer, the court said, remains free to obtain additional documents from relevant financial institutions or other authorities if further verification is required. The judgment also outlines the complainant’s version of events. According to court records, the complainant initially invested Rs5 million in cryptocurrency. He claimed that a subsequent crash in the cryptocurrency market caused him heavy financial losses. The complainant further alleged that, in an effort to recover those losses, he sold household belongings, his vehicle, and gold jewellery to make additional investments in cryptocurrency. He later claimed that his cryptocurrency accounts were frozen, preventing him from accessing his digital assets. According to the FIR, the complainant then began withdrawing funds through the cryptocurrency accounts of friends. He alleged that the accused obtained cryptocurrency through bank accounts but failed to return the corresponding amount owed to him. After reviewing the available material, the Lahore High Court concluded that there was currently insufficient prima facie evidence directly implicating the petitioners in the alleged offences. On that basis, the court allowed their interim bail petitions while making it clear that the investigation would continue in accordance with the law. The ruling highlights the judiciary’s emphasis on evidence-based investigations in complex financial and cryptocurrency-related disputes, while leaving the final determination of criminal responsibility to the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

    MEXICO CITY: A dangerous flesh-eating parasite known as the New World screwworm is spreading through parts of Mexico and Central America, with hundreds of human infections reported and growing concern over its potential impact on livestock and animal health. The parasite is the larval stage of a particular fly. Unlike ordinary flies, the female screwworm fly can lay eggs in open wounds or vulnerable areas of living animals and humans. The eggs can hatch within about a day, after which the larvae enter the wound and feed on living tissue. The infection, known as myiasis, can become severe if treatment is delayed. In serious cases, the larvae can damage muscles and even reach deeper tissues and bones. A study published in a medical journal linked to US health authorities examined 202 confirmed human cases recorded in Mexico between April 2025 and March 2026. Researchers found that reported infections increased sharply, rising from roughly three cases a week in 2025 to more than nine cases a week during 2026. More than half of the patients examined had infections involving their legs. Other cases affected the head, neck, nose, mouth and eyes, highlighting the parasite’s ability to invade different parts of the body through wounds or vulnerable tissue. The study reported six deaths among the patients examined, although researchers directly linked only one of those deaths to screwworm infection. The average age of patients was about 61, while 72 per cent were men. Researchers also found that 77 per cent of those infected had at least one pre-existing medical condition, potentially increasing their vulnerability to complications. The parasite is considered particularly dangerous for livestock because its larvae feed on living tissue. Untreated infections can cause serious wounds, weaken animals and, in severe cases, prove fatal. The resurgence has also raised concerns in the United States. The country had previously eliminated the New World screwworm after decades of control efforts, achieving eradication in 1966. However, the parasite returned to the spotlight after an infected calf was confirmed in Texas’s Zavala County in June 2026, according to international reports. The development has heightened fears that the parasite could spread further north, particularly through livestock movement and other routes. Health and agricultural authorities face the difficult task of controlling the parasite while detecting infections early. For people, experts generally stress the importance of seeking medical attention for unusual or worsening wounds, particularly after exposure in areas where screwworm is circulating. The outbreak serves as a reminder that a tiny insect can create a major public-health and agricultural challenge when conditions allow a dangerous parasite to spread.

    Tax ombudsman flags flaw in FBR refund system

    Pakistan’s Federal Tax Ombudsman has identified a major flaw in the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) FASTER sales tax refund system and directed the tax authority to take immediate corrective measures. The ombudsman said the issue is affecting exporters and undermining the effectiveness of the automated sales tax refund mechanism, which was introduced to ensure quicker processing of refund claims. The observations were made in a ruling issued by Federal Tax Ombudsman Zafar Hijazi while deciding complaints filed by a company regarding delays and issues in the refund process. According to the decision, the FASTER system is unable to distinguish between commercial export goods declarations and non-commercial sample exports. As a result, exporters may face unnecessary delays or complications in obtaining legitimate sales tax refunds. The ombudsman directed the FBR to address the technical shortcomings in the system without delay to ensure that genuine exporters receive timely refunds and the automated mechanism functions efficiently. The ruling emphasized that improving the FASTER system is essential for protecting exporters’ interests and maintaining confidence in Pakistan’s tax refund process
