UN experts urge Canada to protect Sikh Activist

United Nations human rights experts have called on Canada to strengthen security measures for Sikh activist Moninder Singh, citing repeated warnings from Canadian authorities about credible threats to his life.

In a letter sent to the Canadian government on June 3 and released publicly under standard UN procedures, five independent experts expressed concern over allegations of foreign intimidation and reprisals targeting Singh, a Canadian citizen.

The experts noted that since 2022, Canadian authorities have issued Singh four separate “duty to warn” notices, informing him of serious and imminent threats to his safety. They urged Ottawa to ensure his protection, safeguard his family, and provide security for others facing similar risks.

The letter also called on Canadian authorities to speed up investigations, hold those responsible accountable, provide justice to victims, and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The appeal was signed by UN special rapporteurs responsible for issues related to counterterrorism and human rights, freedom of peaceful assembly, human rights defenders, freedom of religion, and democratic international order. A copy of the communication was also shared with the Indian government.

Singh visited Geneva earlier this year to seek international attention over what he described as the targeting of Sikh activists abroad and the broader issue of transnational repression.

The case comes amid longstanding tensions between Canada and India following the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near a Sikh temple in British Columbia. Canadian authorities alleged Indian involvement in the assassination, an accusation New Delhi has consistently denied.

The dispute strained diplomatic relations, leading both countries to expel diplomats in 2024. Although bilateral ties have improved under Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, concerns over the safety of Sikh activists continue to draw international attention.

Singh, who supports the Khalistan movement advocating for an independent Sikh homeland, said the UN experts’ intervention highlights growing concerns over the safety of Sikh voices abroad.

    Weekly inflation rises 0.15% in second week of August

    ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation increased by 0.15% during the second week of August 2026, pushing the year-on-year inflation rate to 9.11%, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks changes in the prices of essential consumer goods, showed a mixed trend during the week. Prices of several food and household items increased, while consumers received some relief from lower prices of petroleum products and selected food commodities. According to the PBS report, prices of 20 out of 51 essential commodities increased during the week under review, while prices of nine items declined. The prices of the remaining 22 commodities remained unchanged. Onion prices surge sharply Among the major price increases, onions recorded the most significant weekly jump, becoming 24.68% more expensive compared with the previous week. The increase is likely to add further pressure on household food budgets, particularly for low-income consumers who are more exposed to fluctuations in basic food prices. The price of gram pulse increased by 3.35%, while chicken became 2.45% more expensive during the week. LPG prices also edged up by 0.67%. Other commodities that recorded weekly price increases included tea, mustard oil, yoghurt and masoor pulse, adding to the overall upward movement in the weekly inflation indicator. Petroleum prices provide some relief The weekly inflation reading was partly offset by declines in the prices of petroleum and several food items. Petrol prices decreased by 2.35% during the week, providing some relief to consumers and transport users. Tomato prices fell by 1.26%, while potatoes became 0.73% cheaper. Diesel prices also declined, though marginally, by 0.29%. Prices of bananas, moong pulse, eggs and sugar also recorded weekly decreases. Despite these reductions, the increase in the prices of several essential food items, particularly onions, pulses and chicken, kept overall weekly inflation in positive territory. Food prices remain major source of annual pressure The year-on-year comparison presents a more pronounced picture of price pressures in several essential commodities. Tomatoes recorded the largest annual increase, with prices rising by 143.77% compared with the same period last year. Onion prices were 125.75% higher, while wheat flour became 77.41% more expensive. LPG prices increased by 55.41% on an annual basis, while diesel recorded a 34.05% increase. Petrol prices were also 23.02% higher than a year earlier. The sharp annual increases in basic food items indicate that consumers continue to face significant pressure in meeting everyday household expenses, even though some commodities have become cheaper compared with last year. Several commodities become cheaper annually The annual data also showed declines in the prices of a number of commodities. Potato prices dropped by 30% compared with a year earlier, marking the largest annual decline among the commodities listed in the report. Sugar prices fell by 17.93%, while chicken became 17.45% cheaper on an annual basis. Gram pulse, eggs and moong pulse also recorded year-on-year declines. The contrasting movements highlight the uneven nature of inflation, with some essential commodities witnessing substantial annual increases while others have recorded notable reductions. The latest PBS figures suggest that although overall inflation remains elevated, price movements continue to vary considerably across different categories. Food, energy and other essential commodities remain key factors influencing household expenditure and the broader cost-of-living situation.

Tarar claimed that evidence of Indian funding for elements associated with the banned Action Committee was now in the public domain. He said numerous Indian social media accounts had emerged with evidence linking them to the campaign. According to the minister, posts shared through these accounts were aimed at provoking people against the state. He alleged that social media platforms were being used to promote groups involved in mob mobilisation and attempts to take the law into their own hands. The minister said efforts had been made to encourage such elements through social media. He alleged that the campaign was designed to create unrest and chaos in Kashmir. Tarar said Pakistan’s recent successes had not been acceptable to its adversaries. He said Pakistan had achieved gains not only on the military front but also on the diplomatic front. The information minister said the government would continue defending Pakistan’s national interests on every front. He stressed that efforts to spread disinformation and destabilise the country would not be allowed to undermine Pakistan’s interests. Tarar’s remarks came amid continued debate over social media campaigns and alleged foreign influence in Pakistan’s internal affairs. The minister urged the public to remain alert to misleading content and propaganda being circulated online.

    Heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread destruction across Punjab over the past 24 hours, leaving at least eight people dead and 37 others injured in a series of weather-related incidents, according to the Emergency Services Department. Rescue Punjab said most of the casualties occurred after roofs, walls, and sheds collapsed due to intense rainfall and powerful windstorms. Emergency teams responded to dozens of incidents across the province and carried out rescue and relief operations. Gujranwala was among the worst-affected districts. Rescue officials reported eight separate incidents of roof and wall collapses. Three people lost their lives, while 14 others suffered injuries. Rescue teams shifted the injured to nearby hospitals and cleared debris from the affected areas. In Kamoke, a tragic incident claimed the life of a child who drowned after falling into rainwater accumulated in an underpass. Authorities urged parents to keep children away from flooded roads and underpasses during heavy rainfall. In Pakpattan, two people were killed and two others injured when the mud roof of a house collapsed following continuous rain. Rescue workers reached the site and recovered the victims from the rubble before shifting the injured for medical treatment. In Sahiwal, a woman died after the roof of a house collapsed in Kot Khadim Ali Shah. In another incident in Harappa, three people were injured when the roof of a shop caved in during the storm. Lahore also witnessed damage as a roof collapsed near Gulshan-e-Ravi on Band Road, injuring four people. Rescue teams provided first aid and transported the injured to hospital. In Mandi Bahauddin, several villages reported roof and wall collapses. Eight people sustained injuries in separate incidents caused by the severe weather. In Bahawalnagar, one person was injured after a shed collapsed near Al-Jannat Chowk on Khan Baba Road. Three more people were injured in Sialkot when the roof of a structure gave way during the rainfall. Rescue officials also reported partial landslides and incidents of fallen trees in the hilly areas of Murree and Kahuta. Emergency teams remained on alert to clear roads and respond to any further emergencies.
