Spokane wildfires destroy 700 homes, force 64,000 to flee

SPOKANE: Devastating wildfires sweeping across the outskirts of Spokane, Washington, have destroyed more than 700 buildings, displaced 64,000 residents, and prompted fears that fatalities may be discovered as emergency crews struggle to contain the fast-moving infernos.

The cluster of three major wildfires, which erupted over the weekend, has become the highest firefighting priority in the United States, with more than 1,100 firefighters deployed to battle the flames. Despite their efforts, officials confirmed that none of the fires had been contained by Monday.

The blazes have scorched over 8,000 acres (3,200 hectares) on the northern edge of Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city, located near the Idaho border. Thick smoke has blanketed the region, reducing visibility and worsening air quality across large parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Dramatic aerial footage showed firefighting aircraft repeatedly dropping fire retardant over forests as towering flames raced toward residential neighborhoods. Entire communities have been reduced to ashes, with officials warning that another 400 structures may also have been damaged or destroyed.

For many families, the evacuation came with little warning.

Among them was Kami Fehlig, who fled her home with her husband, two daughters and family dog after watching flames leap across the Spokane River and race toward their neighborhood.

“We knew we had to leave immediately,” she recalled. “We grabbed our wedding album, baby books, pet supplies and whatever we could carry before the power went out.”

Hours later, the family learned that their home and surrounding neighborhood had been completely destroyed.

Authorities said thousands more residents remain under mandatory evacuation orders as shifting winds continue to threaten additional communities.

Emergency officials also warned that the full scale of the disaster may not yet be known. Several people have been reported missing, while search teams have been unable to access some of the hardest-hit areas because of intense fire activity.

“There is a high probability that fatalities will be found once crews can safely enter devastated neighborhoods,” incident command spokesperson Benjamin Cossel said.

The cause of the fires remains under investigation.

The Spokane fires are part of an exceptionally severe wildfire season gripping the Pacific Northwest. Washington alone is battling 15 major wildfires, with more than 250,000 acres already burned. Across the United States, officials have recorded over 44,700 wildfires so far this year, consuming nearly 5.2 million acres, making it one of the worst fire seasons in recent years.

Neighboring British Columbia, Canada, is also experiencing intense wildfire activity fueled by record drought conditions and extreme heat.

Fire managers hope a brief period of cooler temperatures and lighter winds will help firefighters make progress before another round of scorching weather arrives later this week.

Scientists say increasingly frequent and intense wildfire seasons across North America and Europe are being driven by prolonged drought, rising temperatures and other effects linked to human-caused climate change, leaving communities facing ever-growing environmental and economic challenges.

Sister reveals shocking details of Imran’s check…

Uzma Khan, sister of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan, said Friday that the PTI founder had complained of health problems that he believed were connected to his prolonged solitary confinement. She made the remarks during a press conference in Islamabad alongside Imran’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, following his transfer to hospital for a medical examination. Uzma said she and Dr Sultan were asked to reach Adiala Jail on Friday evening after receiving a phone call. According to her, they arrived at the prison at around 8pm to 8:30pm. She said they were taken to a room belonging to a deputy superintendent of police. After some time, she alleged, Dr Sultan was asked to leave the room with a police official while she was taken separately by a female police officer. Uzma said police officers did not explain where she was being taken or provide clear information about Dr Sultan. She was eventually taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), despite the Supreme Court directing that Imran be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for a medical checkup. According to Uzma, officials told her the visit to Pims was related to a follow-up examination of Imran’s eye condition. She described the hospital environment as unusually dark and said she was taken through the building with the help of a mobile phone flashlight before being brought to an office. Uzma said she was later taken upstairs, where she unexpectedly saw her brother. She recalled that Imran appeared surprised and shocked to see her after a long period apart. He reportedly introduced her to the doctors as his sister, saying they were meeting after about 10 months. Uzma said she informed Imran that he had been brought for a medical examination and was expected to be taken to Shifa International Hospital afterward. She also asked about Dr Sultan but said she was not given a clear answer. The examination eventually focused on Imran’s eye. Uzma said several doctors were present, although she was familiar with only one of them, whom she identified as Dr Arif. Imran has previously received treatment at Pims following the diagnosis of right central retinal vein occlusion, an eye condition identified earlier this year. The Supreme Court had directed authorities to arrange Imran’s medical examination while also instructing that information about his health should not be used for political purposes.

Taliban seeks improved ties with Pakistan

The Taliban administration has expressed its desire to reduce tensions and improve relations with Pakistan, saying that continued disputes serve the interests of neither country. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said both sides should work to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and cooperation. He noted that the closure of border crossings and restrictions faced by Afghan traders have contributed to strained relations and disrupted bilateral trade. Mujahid said the Taliban wants these issues to be addressed to facilitate smoother cross-border movement and strengthen economic ties between the two neighboring countries. He also acknowledged that trade with Pakistan has been affected in recent months, adding that Afghanistan has increased its economic engagement with Iran while pursuing new projects aimed at developing the country’s mineral resources. However, analysts have raised concerns over the transparency of some of the reported mining agreements and questioned whether sufficient oversight and accountability mechanisms are in place. The remarks come at a time when Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to face challenges in bilateral relations, including border management, trade disruptions and broader security concerns.

Jennifer Aniston’s changing priorities spark con…

Jennifer Aniston is reportedly entering a new chapter in her personal life, but not everyone in her inner circle is convinced it is the right move. According to recent reports, the Friends star has been shifting her priorities away from work and placing a greater focus on her personal relationships, a decision that has reportedly prompted concern among some of those closest to her. While Aniston has not publicly addressed the claims, insiders suggest the actress is embracing a slower pace after years of balancing an intense Hollywood career.  A source claimed that Aniston’s priorities have “completely shifted,” with more of her time now dedicated to her relationship with boyfriend Jim Curtis. The report suggests that some friends have advised the actress to “pump the brakes,” expressing concern that she may be making significant life changes too quickly. However, those close to Aniston also acknowledge that she appears genuinely happy and is making decisions she believes are best for her future.  The reported shift comes after Aniston has openly spoken about the importance of achieving a healthier work-life balance. In previous interviews with People, the Emmy-winning actress admitted that she has long considered herself “a bit of a workaholic” and recognized the need to make time for herself after several demanding years. She explained that she has become more intentional about scheduling breaks and protecting her personal time to avoid burnout.  Over the past few years, Aniston has remained one of Hollywood’s busiest stars. In addition to starring in and executive producing Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, she has continued expanding her successful haircare brand, LolaVie, while also pursuing new film and television projects. Her packed schedule has left little room for downtime, making her recent focus on personal happiness understandable.  Despite speculation that her career could take a back seat, there is no indication that Aniston plans to retire from acting. Instead, reports suggest she is simply becoming more selective about the projects she chooses, allowing herself greater flexibility to enjoy life outside of work. Friends and colleagues may have differing opinions about her changing priorities, but Aniston has consistently emphasized that maintaining balance is essential to both her personal well-being and professional success.  Throughout her decades-long career, Aniston has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected and reliable performers. From her iconic role as Rachel Green on Friends to her award-winning performance in The Morning Show, she has demonstrated remarkable consistency and longevity. That success gives her the freedom to make choices based on fulfillment rather than constant professional ambition. Whether the reported concerns from her inner circle are justified remains unclear, as they are based on anonymous sources rather than public statements from the actress herself. What is evident, however, is that Jennifer Aniston has become increasingly vocal about protecting her peace, valuing meaningful relationships, and creating a healthier balance between work and life. If those priorities continue to shape her future, they may ultimately strengthen both her personal happiness and her enduring career.  Jennifer Aniston is reportedly entering a new chapter in her personal life, but not everyone in her inner circle is convinced it is the right move.
