Norway’s ‘People’s King’ dies: What comes next?

Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89 after more than three decades on the throne.

The Norwegian royal palace said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35am local time. He had been receiving treatment after being hospitalised earlier this month with a serious illness and a bacterial infection in his blood.

Harald’s death brings an end to a 35-year reign during which he became one of Norway’s most respected and popular public figures. He was widely regarded as a modernising monarch who helped make the royal institution more open, accessible and closely connected with ordinary citizens.

His son, Crown Prince Haakon, immediately became king following his father’s death. Haakon, 53, is expected to formally address the government and parliament as Norway begins the transition to a new reign.

Born on February 21, 1937, Harald was the first Norwegian-born heir to the throne in almost six centuries. His childhood was shaped by the Second World War. When Nazi Germany invaded Norway in 1940, the young prince left the country with his mother and sisters. The family spent time in Sweden before travelling to the United States, where they lived during the war.

Harald returned to Norway after the war and later completed his education and military service. He studied social sciences, history and economics at Oxford University before becoming increasingly involved in royal duties.

One of the defining moments of his personal life came in 1968, when he married Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of a businessman. The marriage broke with royal tradition because Sonja was a commoner. Harald had reportedly waited years for permission to marry her and eventually made clear that he would rather remain unmarried than give her up.

Queen Sonja remained his partner throughout his nearly six decades of marriage and his entire reign.

Harald became king in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. Over time, he developed a reputation for showing emotion and speaking openly on issues affecting Norwegian society.

His role as a national unifier became particularly important after the 2011 terrorist attacks in Oslo and on Utøya, in which 77 people were killed. Harald’s public response focused on solidarity, compassion and rejecting fear.

He also became known for advocating tolerance and diversity. In a widely remembered speech in 2016, he emphasised that Norway was home to people of different nationalities, religions and sexual orientations.

Outside his official duties, Harald was a passionate sailor and represented Norway at three Olympic Games. He was also interested in environmental conservation and supported efforts to protect nature.

His later years were marked by repeated health problems. In 2024, he was hospitalised while visiting Malaysia and later received a pacemaker. He subsequently reduced his public engagements but rejected calls for abdication, maintaining that his commitment to the throne was lifelong.

Harald’s death also comes at a difficult time for Norway’s royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit has faced scrutiny over her past contacts with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while her son Marius Borg Høiby was convicted this year of rape and domestic violence. Mette-Marit has also undergone a lung transplant after suffering from a serious pulmonary condition.

Despite the controversies surrounding members of his family, Harald himself retained strong personal popularity among Norwegians.

Tributes have poured in from European leaders and fellow monarchs. Britain’s King Charles III described Harald as a much-loved relative and friend, while Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf remembered him as a close friend of his family and Sweden.

Two more air India pilots fail initial drug tests

Two more Air India pilots have failed preliminary drug screening following the incident involving an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi. The airline has temporarily removed both pilots from flying duties while authorities await the results of their final tests. According to Indian media reports, Air India decided to conduct drug screening for all its pilots after the incident. More than 300 pilots have undergone testing so far, with final results generally taking between 24 and 48 hours. The captain of the Phuket-to-Delhi flight also failed two drug-related tests conducted after the aircraft landed. Subsequent testing reportedly detected cannabis in the pilot’s system. Indian media have also reported that a flight attendant complained that the captain had allegedly used cannabis before the flight. The development has raised further questions about safety procedures and pilot fitness at Air India. The airline is now reviewing the results of the wider testing campaign as it seeks to determine whether any other crew members may have violated aviation safety regulations. The Phuket-Delhi flight involved an Airbus A320neo that reportedly experienced a sudden loss of altitude during the journey. The aircraft dropped by around 300 feet before recovering, prompting concerns among passengers and crew. Officials initially described the incident as turbulence. However, detailed information from the aircraft’s systems later prompted closer scrutiny of what happened during the flight and raised questions about possible technical issues as well as the captain’s conduct. Air India has yet to receive the final laboratory results for the two newly identified pilots. Until those results arrive, the airline has kept both pilots off flight operations as a precautionary measure.

Activist urges President to withdraw Civil awards …

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani citizen and activist Ashba Kamran has formally written to President Asif Ali Zardari, calling for the immediate withdrawal of national civil awards announced by the government on August 14, 2026, for serving bureaucrats, federal secretaries and ministers. In her letter addressed to the President, Kamran argued that awarding national honours to salaried bureaucrats and ministers for carrying out their routine official responsibilities amounts to a violation of the Constitution and relevant laws. She maintained that government officials should not receive national awards merely for performing duties for which they are already appointed and paid. According to the letter, Kamran had previously raised similar concerns with the Presidency in August 2025 and had sent a formal reminder regarding the issue. However, she claimed that despite the earlier communication, the administration once again took what she described as an unconstitutional step by including serving government officials among the recipients of civil awards announced on August 14 this year. The activist cited constitutional and legal provisions to support her position. Referring to Article 259(2) of the Constitution of Pakistan, she argued that national awards are intended to recognise exceptional achievements, including acts of bravery, distinguished services by members of the armed forces, academic distinction and extraordinary and selfless public service. She further maintained that the concept of “public service” in the context of national honours should refer to exceptional and self-sacrificing contributions rather than the routine responsibilities performed by bureaucrats and ministers in their official capacities. Such responsibilities, she argued, are already compensated through regular salaries and official benefits. Kamran also referred to the Decorations Act, 1975, and other relevant laws governing national civil awards. According to her interpretation, these legal provisions do not permit civil honours to be linked simply to an individual’s administrative position, seniority or government employment. The letter further raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest. Kamran argued that granting national awards to serving government officials for routine administrative work could encourage a culture of favouritism and preferential treatment. She called for greater transparency and adherence to established legal standards when selecting recipients of national honours. The activist also invoked Article 5(2) of the Constitution, which establishes the obligation to obey the Constitution and the law. She argued that this obligation applies to every citizen, including the head of state and government officials. Kamran presented two key demands in her letter. First, she called for an administrative order to immediately withdraw the awards granted to serving bureaucrats and ministers included in the August 14, 2026 list where the honours were allegedly awarded for performing their routine official responsibilities. Second, she urged the Cabinet Division to issue clear instructions preventing officials who are merely performing their regular administrative and governmental duties from being eligible for future nominations for national civil awards. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Cabinet Secretary and the Cabinet Division in Islamabad for consideration and appropriate action. The matter has raised questions about the criteria used for selecting recipients of national honours and the distinction between exceptional public service and the routine responsibilities associated with government positions.

SUJAWAL:* In a disturbing incident on Wednesday morning, a teacher of Government Boys High School, Begna Mori, within Taluka Jati of District Sujawal, was injured when cement plaster from the staff room fell on him. According to the Senior Head Master of the School, Aziz Allah Dino Khowaja, Junior Elementary School Teacher Fayyaz Zaur was present in the staff room, working on an official assignment, when the roof plaster fell on his head, leaving him critically injured. “As the blood started oozing from his head, we took him to Basic Health Unit Begna Mori for treatment,” said the Senior Head Master, adding that after treatment, the condition of the teacher had become stable. School Teacher Abid Inayat disclosed that the tender for the school’s refurbishment had been passed, and the contractor had demolished a portion of the school comprising three classrooms, but a few months ago he abruptly stopped the renovation work and has been evading resuming work. “Multiple efforts have been made to contact the missing contractor, but he is evading a response,” the teacher said. He further disclosed that the lives of 22 teachers, over a hundred students, and the lower staff had been at stake owing to the ramshackle condition of the building. The school, he said, is one of the schools with high enrollment, and such an incident would leave an adverse effect on the newcomers. The Head Master mentioned that they had approached the District Education Officer (Secondary), Sujawal, and other concerned authorities to ensure the safety of children, but to no avail. He urged the Sindh Minister for Education, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, to take speedy measures for resuming the renovation work of the school and to conduct a thorough probe against the fleeing contractor.

Singer Aima Baig has shared that her upcoming debut album, “Guriya,” is a heartfelt tribute to her late mother and reflects her personal journey through grief, healing and self-discovery. The singer said the album represents a significant milestone in her career and carries deep emotional value because it is inspired by the memory of her mother, who passed away in 2017. She revealed that “Guriya” was her mother’s nickname, making the title a lasting tribute to someone she continues to miss every day. Aima said losing her mother changed her life forever. She explained that grief evolves with time and becomes more meaningful as a person grows older. According to the singer, the absence of her mother remains one of the most difficult realities she continues to face despite achieving success in her career. She added that the album is not a response to criticism or public opinion but rather a reflection of her own experiences and emotions. She described the project as her story, told in her own voice and on her own terms. The singer also spoke about the emotional process of creating the album. She said working on the songs required her to revisit old memories and go through her mother’s belongings, making the experience both painful and therapeutic. She described the creative journey as emotionally intense but one that ultimately helped her heal. The singer also addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video that allegedly showed her and singer Bilal Saeed intoxicated in London. She clarified that the footage was recorded during the filming of a project and said the situation had been widely misunderstood. According to Aima, people often form opinions without knowing the complete context behind such videos. She added that although the controversy attracted significant public attention, it unexpectedly increased interest in an unreleased song linked to the project. However, she stressed that she wants to be recognized for her music and artistic abilities rather than media controversies. Reflecting on her career, Aima said much of her youth has been lived in the public eye, with both her personal struggles and professional achievements closely followed by fans and the media. She acknowledged that many people have misconceptions about her based on headlines rather than her true personality.

Billie Eilish leaves music behind for bold new Hol…

Billie Eilish is proving that her creative journey extends far beyond music. The Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer has officially stepped into the world of feature films, and the first photos from the set of The Bell Jar have left fans doing a double take. Known for her signature oversized outfits and edgy style, Eilish appears almost unrecognizable as she transforms into Esther Greenwood, the troubled yet ambitious writer at the heart of Sylvia Plath’s classic novel.  The newly released set images showcase a dramatic makeover. Eilish sports auburn brown hair styled in a polished 1950s fashion, bold red lipstick, pearl earrings, and elegant vintage-inspired clothing. The striking look is a complete departure from the singer’s everyday appearance, highlighting her commitment to bringing the beloved literary character to life. Fans have praised the transformation, calling it one of the most surprising celebrity makeovers of the year.  Directed and adapted by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley, The Bell Jar marks Eilish’s first leading role in a feature film. The story follows Esther Greenwood, a young aspiring writer navigating ambition, identity, and personal struggles in the 1950s. Widely regarded as Sylvia Plath’s most famous work, the novel remains one of literature’s most influential coming-of-age stories. The film also stars Carey Mulligan as Esther’s mother, adding even more star power to the highly anticipated adaptation.  Although this is Eilish’s feature film debut, she is no stranger to acting. She previously appeared in the television series Swarm, where she surprised audiences with her performance. After dominating the music industry with chart-topping albums, multiple Grammy Awards, and two Oscars for Best Original Song, she is now exploring a different form of storytelling. While fans eagerly await her next musical release, many are equally excited to see whether she can achieve the same success on the big screen.
