President approves Nishan-i-Imtiaz for Strategic C…

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the conferment of the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) on General Syed Aamer Raza, the newly appointed Commander of the National Strategic Command (NSC).

The announcement was made by the President’s Secretariat through a post on X, stating that the country’s highest civilian office had endorsed the prestigious military honour for General Raza in recognition of his distinguished service.

General Raza has previously received the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-i-Basalat, reflecting a career marked by operational leadership and professional excellence.

His latest recognition comes shortly after his promotion to the rank of four-star general and appointment as Pakistan’s first Commander of the National Strategic Command. The position was created as part of the sweeping reforms introduced under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which reshaped the country’s higher defence structure.

Under the new framework, the office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee was abolished and replaced by the position of Chief of Defence Forces, a role currently held concurrently by Field Marshal Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff.

The National Strategic Command serves as the unified operational headquarters for Pakistan’s strategic forces, bringing together the strategic commands of the Army, Navy and Air Force under one command. Despite this restructuring, the National Command Authority, chaired by the prime minister, remains the country’s highest decision-making body on nuclear policy and strategic employment.

General Raza was appointed to the post by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces. As provided under the amended Army Act, the appointment carries a three-year tenure.

Before assuming his new responsibilities, General Raza served as Chief of General Staff, where he supervised key operational planning and played a central role in implementing military reforms introduced after the constitutional changes. He also oversaw organisational restructuring following last year’s conflict with India, including the establishment of the Army Rocket Force Command.

Commissioned into the 6th Lancers in 1988 after graduating from the Officers Training School (OTS), General Raza has held several important command and staff appointments throughout his military career. These include commanding an armoured regiment, an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, an infantry division and Lahore’s IV Corps. He has also served as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila, Director General Weapons and Equipment, and Chief of Staff at II Corps.

Sonu Nigam opens up on being banned by music companies over copyright fight

Sonu Nigam recently revisited one of the most controversial chapters of his career. He spoke about it during a candid conversation on the YouTube show Game Changers with Komal Nahta. The topic centered on the time music companies banned him after he raised his voice on copyright issues. Nigam began by looking back at how well his career was going before the controversy started. He said albums kept releasing one after another during that time. Audiences loved his work, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. That changed the moment he raised concerns over copyright. Several music companies responded by cutting ties with him entirely. He recalled how people within the industry began labelling him an activist at the time. The tone behind that label, he noted, was often dismissive rather than respectful. Looking back now, he finds it ironic that those same companies eventually started paying him royalties. He added that representatives from these companies now visit his home as guests. Nigam also explained his reasoning behind taking such a bold stand at the time. He said someone had to take the risk, comparing his decision to belling the cat. According to him, he felt he was meant for something bigger than just singing. He believed he was destined to carry forward a movement that legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar had once started. That movement, he said, had never reached its logical conclusion. When asked whether he felt scared during that turbulent period, Nigam said fear was not something he experienced. He admitted he never expected to actually get banned in the first place. He initially believed things would eventually work out on their own. However, as the situation kept worsening and more doors closed around him, he found strength through his live performances instead. He felt confident that nobody could stop him once he stepped on stage. Nigam went on to describe how his relationship with music companies gradually improved over time. He credited changing laws, along with the industry’s eventual realization that his stance had been justified. According to him, this shift slowly repaired his equation with these companies. Today, he said, their interactions feel warm and almost familial in nature. Reflecting on the entire journey, Nigam suggested that everyone involved likely needed to go through that difficult phase for real change to happen. He noted that any bitterness or resentment that once existed between him and the industry has since completely faded away, leaving behind a much healthier relationship.

Terrorism case registered after clash at MQM-P hea…

Karachi police have registered a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act following a violent clash between rival groups at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) headquarters in Bahadurabad that left several people injured and spread panic in the surrounding area. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the case has been registered by the state at New Town Police Station under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including rioting, attempted murder, causing injuries and unlawful assembly, along with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Police have nominated two suspects, identified as Azhar alias Lumba and Zeeshan Habib, while 20 to 25 unidentified individuals have also been named in the case. Investigators said police received reports on the evening of August 2 that two groups had clashed near Choti Market in Bahadurabad. During the violence, a man identified as Amir sustained a bullet injury to his arm, while two others, Asad and Kashir Ali, were also injured. All three were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. The FIR states that both groups allegedly exchanged gunfire and fired into the air, creating fear among residents and disrupting public order. Authorities also noted that Section 144 was in force at the time, prohibiting the display of weapons and public disorder. Police said the suspects fled the scene before law enforcement personnel arrived. The incident reportedly occurred during a party meeting at MQM-P’s central office. Officials said workers belonging to one faction allegedly assaulted members of the rival group and forced them out of the party headquarters. Norris takes pole in Hungary as Hamilton penalty d…

McLaren’s Lando Norris took his first grand prix pole position of the season in Hungary, but Lewis Hamilton was denied the chance to make it an all-British front row by a three-place penalty for impeding. Norris beat Hamilton by just 0.012 seconds with the very last lap of the session, securing pole in the upgraded McLaren. The seven-time champion had been fastest on the first runs, by just over 0.1 seconds from Norris, but neither he nor teammate Charles Leclerc could improve on their final attempts. However, Hamilton’s penalty for blocking Norris’s teammate Oscar Piastri dropped him to fifth, promoting Leclerc to second on the grid. Piastri moves up to fourth, while Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will start third, with George Russell seventh. The chaotic end to the session was caused by a spin at the final corner by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, which affected Antonelli and Russell, forcing them to slow. Verstappen had got going again before Norris came around as the last driver on track to clinch pole. Norris said: “Very happy to be back on top, especially at a track where you certainly want to be on pole. I had confidence the whole of today. My laps were good.” All the drivers were battling with a Hungaroring track surface that was breaking up, especially in the final two corners, where Norris said it was especially difficult to judge the grip level. Even before the incident with Verstappen, Russell was afflicted on his final run by a water leak, which was spraying water on to his rear tyres. Mercedes asked him to pull over immediately after crossing the line, and he parked at Turn One, in an attempt to avoid damaging the engine. Antonelli said: “I think we were just slightly out of the window with tyres, then in Q3 we did a good step and the car just felt finally a bit more alive. For sure it was a shame with the yellow flags, but it happens. P3 was on the table today but still not good enough for pole.” The Hungarian Grand Prix promises to be an exciting race, with Norris on pole and Leclerc alongside him on the front row. Hamilton’s penalty has disrupted the grid, but the seven-time champion will be looking to fight his way through the field. The race will be a test of strategy and tyre management, with the track surface likely to play a significant role in the outcome. Fans are eagerly anticipating the action, with the Hungaroring historically producing exciting races. The battle between Norris, Hamilton, and the rest of the field is set to be a thrilling contest, with the championship implications adding to the drama. As the race weekend unfolds, the focus will be on whether Norris can convert his pole position into a victory, or whether Hamilton and the others can challenge for the top step of the podium. The Hungarian Grand Prix promises to be a highlight of the Formula 1 season, with the drivers and teams ready to put on a show for the fans.

LAHORE: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has partnered with the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts & Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) as a strategic partner for the 21st Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS) 2026. The three-day exhibition will take place from September 18 to 20 at the Expo Centre Lahore, bringing together stakeholders from Pakistan’s automotive and engineering sectors as well as potential international business partners. The partnership reflects SMEDA’s continued efforts to strengthen micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in line with the policy direction of the Ministry of Industries and Production and the SMEDA Board of Directors. The initiative aims to help local businesses expand their market reach, develop new partnerships and become part of regional and global industrial supply chains. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan chaired a meeting on SMEDA’s collaboration with PAAPAM. Secretary of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, SMEDA Board members, CEO Nadia Jahangir Seth, Pak Suzuki head Hiroshi Kawamura and representatives of PAAPAM attended the meeting. Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government wanted to transform Pakistan into a competitive manufacturing hub by empowering MSMEs and strengthening domestic industrial value chains. He highlighted the resilience and growth potential of Pakistan’s automotive sector, saying events such as the Pakistan Auto Show could help promote local manufacturing, encourage innovation and attract investment. The SAPM called for the 2026 exhibition to become a major international platform with a strong focus on business-to-business engagement, memorandums of understanding and joint ventures. He also ordered the formation of a private-sector-led committee to prepare a comprehensive plan for making the event a landmark occasion. Khan further directed SMEDA to provide full support to PAAPAM and engage with foreign embassies and local MSMEs to facilitate effective business matchmaking during the exhibition. He said the government wanted to give MSMEs better access to markets, stronger commercial connections and greater opportunities to join regional and international value chains. Secretary MoI&P Saif Anjum said the event should help local auto parts manufacturers gain greater exposure and establish business links with international competitors. He called for SMEDA, PAAPAM, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Engineering Development Board (EDB) to work together to achieve the exhibition’s objectives. SMEDA CEO Nadia Jahangir Seth described the automotive sector as one of Pakistan’s most dynamic industries, with significant potential for SME-driven growth. She said numerous MSMEs play a key role in the country’s auto parts and engineering ecosystem. Through its partnership with PAAPAM, SMEDA aims to help these businesses present their capabilities, establish strategic alliances, adopt modern technologies and explore new opportunities in domestic and international markets. PAPS 2026 Convener Salman Saleem welcomed SMEDA’s participation, saying the partnership would strengthen efforts to present Pakistan’s automotive industry to the global market. He said SMEDA’s support would increase SME participation and reinforce efforts to promote local manufacturing under the “Make in Pakistan” vision. A symposium will also take place on September 19 alongside the exhibition. Organisers expect the session to contribute to discussions on the future of Pakistan’s automotive industry and help develop a roadmap for further growth and collaboration.
