The federal government has announced another reduction in petroleum prices, lowering the rates of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) effective August 5 under the recently introduced daily fuel pricing mechanism.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs3.39 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs328.56 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel has also been cut by Rs4.07 per litre, with the revised rate set at Rs385.86 per litre.

The latest reduction follows a similar decrease announced a day earlier, reflecting continued adjustments under the government’s daily fuel price review system.

The new pricing mechanism, introduced on July 17, determines fuel prices using a seven-day average of international oil market rates. The policy aims to align domestic petroleum prices more closely with global market trends and allow quicker adjustments in response to fluctuations in crude oil prices.

Pakistan remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil and refined petroleum products, making local fuel prices highly sensitive to movements in international energy markets. Changes in global oil prices directly affect the country’s import bill, foreign exchange reserves and inflation.

Energy analysts say international petroleum prices continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments, including tensions in the Middle East, decisions by OPEC+ countries, sanctions on major oil producers and disruptions in key global shipping routes. These factors can significantly impact crude oil prices and transportation costs, ultimately affecting domestic fuel prices in Pakistan.

    KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah chaired a high-level meeting on the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), where officials reviewed the province’s security situation, operational performance, investigations, infrastructure and future requirements. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho, Additional IG CTD Zulfiqar Larik and other senior officials attended the meeting. The meeting was informed that banned militant and insurgent organisations continue to pose a security challenge to Sindh. However, officials said terrorist incidents in the province had declined significantly during 2026. According to Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Sindh reported 37 terrorism incidents in 2025. The number fell to nine in 2026, representing a decline of around 76 per cent. The Sindh police chief told the meeting that seven of the nine terrorism cases reported this year had been traced and their investigations completed. Officials said the CTD conducted 918 intelligence-based operations across the province during 2026. These operations resulted in the arrest of 87 suspected terrorists, while four militants were killed in separate encounters. The briefing said the CTD had dismantled several militant networks allegedly involved in attacks on police personnel and sensitive installations. During a follow-up operation in Karachi, the department arrested a key suspect and an associate. Weapons and explosive material were also recovered from their possession. The suspects are allegedly wanted in several cases involving the targeted killing of police officers. According to the IG Sindh, more than 2,000 kilograms of explosive material were recovered during operations against militant networks. Four militants affiliated with banned insurgent organisations were also killed in encounters. The home minister said several planned attacks on law enforcement agencies and important installations had been foiled. He added that the CTD had also dismantled a network allegedly involved in attacks on railway tracks in northern Sindh. The operation helped prevent planned acts of sabotage, officials said. The meeting also reviewed progress in the investigation into the Karachi Training Centre attack. The police chief told the chief minister that nine suspects had so far been arrested in the case. A Joint Investigation Team has also been formed to conduct a detailed probe. Officials said several investigative sessions had been held during the inquiry and a number of alleged facilitators had been identified. The investigation is still under way. The meeting was also briefed on the performance of the CTD Fusion Centre. Officials said the centre had significantly improved the collection and analysis of intelligence as well as digital investigations. Hundreds of social media accounts allegedly linked to extremist activities have also been blocked or reported, according to the briefing. The Sindh home minister proposed additional resources for modern intelligence software and digital forensic tools. He also called for strengthening crime analytics platforms and systems equipped with artificial intelligence to improve the department’s ability to identify and respond to emerging security threats. The meeting was further informed that major projects for the development of CTD infrastructure across Sindh were under way. Officials said construction of a separate CTD complex in Sukkur had also begun under the province’s Annual Development Programme.

However, according to the complaint filed with the police, the dog never returned after being sent after the suspects. The owner believes that the alleged thieves took the animal with them when they fled the scene after failing to steal the tube well. The complainant expressed suspicion that the suspects, unable to accomplish their original objective, decided to take the pet dog instead. He requested the police to investigate the incident and recover the missing animal. Police officials confirmed that a formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered based on the complainant’s statement. Investigators have launched an inquiry into the unusual case and are working to identify the individuals allegedly involved in the incident. Authorities said they are examining all available evidence and gathering information from the surrounding area to determine what exactly happened on the night of the alleged theft. At this stage, police have not confirmed whether the dog was actually stolen or wandered away during the chase. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say further details will emerge once the inquiry is completed. The incident has attracted attention because of its unusual nature. While cases involving the theft of agricultural machinery, livestock, and farm equipment are relatively common in rural parts of Pakistan, allegations involving the theft of a pet dog after an unsuccessful attempt to steal a tube well are highly uncommon.     AJK polls underway as 1.4m voters cast ballots

    MUZAFFARABAD: Polling is underway in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Voting started at 8am and will continue until 5pm. Elections are being held today in 13 constituencies across three districts of Mirpur division — Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Polling has started at several stations. However, voting has yet to begin at some locations because voters have not arrived. In Kotli, polling is underway at Polling Station No. 38 in Aghar Colony. Voting has not started at polling stations 36 and 37 due to the absence of voters. Candidates cast votes Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, contesting from LA-7 in Bhimber, cast his vote at Polling Station No. 161. Speaking after voting, Farooq said voter turnout was expected to be higher in rural areas than in cities. He also urged women to leave their homes after completing household responsibilities and exercise their right to vote. Farooq expressed satisfaction with the law and order situation and the arrangements made for the elections in Bhimber. PPP confident of victory Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Muhammad Humayun Khan said the party was confident of securing a strong victory in the Azad Kashmir elections. He said the party’s electoral symbol, the arrow, represented the Kashmiri people’s rights to governance, ownership and employment. Humayun Khan said the PPP would continue to raise the voice of the people of Kashmir at every forum. He also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, describing it as an important need. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari also expressed confidence that voters in Azad Kashmir would support the PPP. He said the party had played an important role in establishing a parliamentary democratic system in Azad Kashmir. There are 1,401,439 registered voters across the 13 constituencies. The number includes 725,118 male voters and 675,628 female voters. A total of 2,454 polling stations have been established across Mirpur division. Mirpur district has 597 polling stations across four constituencies. Kotli has 1,107 stations across six constituencies, while 608 polling stations have been established in three constituencies of Bhimber. Officials urge voters to participate Mirpur Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz and DIG Kamran Ali visited wards 16 and 17 of LA-3 to review the polling arrangements. Speaking to the media, Commissioner Mumtaz said polling was proceeding peacefully across all three districts from 8am. He urged voters to come out and cast their ballots without fear. He assured the public that the administration had arranged a peaceful environment for voters. Tight security arrangements Authorities have put in place extensive security measures for the elections. Azad Kashmir Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Mustafa Mughal warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the voting process. AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan said the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected groups seeking to create disorder and had shown confidence in the democratic process. He said all state institutions were prepared to ensure peaceful elections.

    The goods transporters strike has been postponed for 40 days after the government and representatives of the transport industry made progress in resolving several key demands. All Pakistan Goods Transport Ittehad President Malik Shehbaz Awan announced the decision on Sunday, saying the strike was being deferred in the “broader national interest”. He said some demands had already been addressed, while issues requiring cabinet approval would be considered within 15 to 20 days. Transporters also received assurances that overloading would be controlled according to legal axle-load limits. Discussions will continue on withholding tax and other industry-related issues. Awan said the Sindh government had agreed to shift truck operations to a new truck stand within a year. He also claimed that six of the association’s eight demands concerning Punjab had been accepted. Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi and Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan welcomed the development and stressed continued dialogue.
