Russia, Pakistan advance Moscow-Karachi rail link

Russia and Pakistan are working to launch a new freight railway service connecting Moscow with Pakistan, Russian Ambassador to Islamabad Albert P. Khorev has said.

The proposed rail link is aimed at improving trade connectivity between the two countries and creating a more direct overland route for the movement of goods.

In comments published by the Russian newspaper Izvestia on August 8, Khorev said Moscow and Islamabad were jointly working on launching freight railway services along the Moscow-Faisalabad and Moscow-Karachi corridors.

The proposed routes would operate in both directions, allowing goods to be transported between Russia and Pakistan through a dedicated rail-based trade network.

Khorev said the possibility of including Belarus in the project was also being examined. If the Belarusian side joins the initiative, the route could provide a wider connection across parts of Eastern Europe and South Asia.

The project has faced delays because of changing geopolitical conditions in the region.

According to the Russian ambassador, heightened geopolitical tensions during 2025 and early 2026 resulted in several postponements to the planned launch.

Despite the delays, work on the project is continuing.

Khorev said the countries involved are currently finalising a contract covering the required freight railway services. At the same time, officials are identifying companies in the countries along the proposed route that could use the railway network to transport commercial cargo.

The identification of potential cargo owners is considered an important step before the service can begin. A stable volume of goods would be needed to make the railway corridor commercially viable.

The Moscow-Karachi route could provide Pakistani and Russian businesses with another option for moving goods between the two markets. It could also reduce reliance on traditional maritime routes for certain types of cargo.

The Moscow-Faisalabad corridor would provide a direct connection to one of Pakistan’s major industrial and commercial centres. Faisalabad is an important manufacturing hub, particularly for textiles and other export-oriented industries.

For Russia, improved rail connectivity with Pakistan could open additional opportunities for trade with South Asia. Pakistani businesses could also gain access to wider markets through connections with Russia and potentially Belarus.

The possible involvement of Belarus could further expand the corridor’s geographical reach. It may also strengthen transport cooperation among the countries involved.

However, the project still requires the completion of commercial and logistical arrangements before the first freight service can be launched.

The parties are therefore focusing on finalising the service contract and securing interest from companies that can provide regular cargo for the route.

The proposed railway initiative is part of broader efforts by Russia and Pakistan to strengthen economic and transport cooperation.

Statements attributed to the PTI founder also appeared on his social media accounts following some of these meetings. Sources said several of those statements contained strong criticism of the establishment, increasing tensions over whether family meetings should continue without additional restrictions. Authorities subsequently placed greater emphasis on ensuring that prison visits did not become a channel for political messaging. Under the current understanding, the authorities are expected to maintain the relaxed approach if the family continues to follow the agreed rules. In practical terms, relatives will be expected to avoid post-meeting press conferences, while politically controversial statements attributed to Imran Khan will also need to remain off the public platform following family visits. The development could provide some relief to Imran Khan and his family by allowing more regular contact while reducing the possibility of family meetings becoming a source of renewed political confrontation. It may also establish a framework under which the former prime minister can maintain direct contact with his relatives without triggering a return to the earlier restrictions. However, sources stressed that the continuation of the current arrangement depends largely on compliance with the agreed SOPs.     Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged the people of Mirpur to actively participate in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections. Bilawal asked Kashmiris to come out of their homes and cast their votes. He said the people should use their democratic right to decide their future. He therefore called on voters to take part in the electoral process instead of staying away from polling stations. The PPP chairman said voters should participate if they want their rights to be protected. He specifically mentioned the right to governance and ownership. He also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission for Azad Kashmir. Bilawal said the PPP wanted the people of Kashmir to have a strong voice in decisions affecting their future. He again urged voters to support the party and ensure their participation in the elections. Meanwhile, polling is continuing in the first phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections. Voting began at 8am and is scheduled to continue until 5pm. The first phase covers 13 constituencies in Mirpur Division. The constituencies are located in the districts of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Polling has started at most stations. However, voting could not begin at polling stations 36 and 37 in Aghar Colony, Kotli, because voters had not arrived. Officials are monitoring the polling process across the division. Authorities have also urged citizens to exercise their right to vote peacefully. Mirpur Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz and Deputy Inspector General Kamran Ali visited wards 16 and 17 of LA-3. They reviewed the polling arrangements and assessed the situation at the polling stations. Speaking to journalists, the commissioner said polling had been proceeding peacefully across all three districts since the morning. He appealed to voters to leave their homes without fear and participate in the elections. The commissioner assured citizens that the administration had made security and other necessary arrangements. He said voters would be provided with a peaceful environment to cast their ballots.

    Cnergyico, Pakistan’s largest oil refiner, has increased its purchases of US crude as the federal government works to diversify the country’s energy supply following disruptions tied to the war in Iran that exposed how heavily Pakistan depends on Gulf shipping routes. The government is also pushing to expand imports from the United States as part of a broader effort to narrow its trade surplus with Washington and secure relief from tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Cnergyico, which made its first purchase of US crude last year, is now weighing spot purchases alongside longer term supply contracts with Vitol and other suppliers, basing those decisions on pricing, reliability and supply security, Vice Chairman Usama Qureshi said. The refiner imported roughly 8.1 million barrels of US crude over a nine month stretch, including 7.1 million barrels worth about $750 million during the fiscal year that ended in June, according to Qureshi. Central bank data showed Pakistan’s payments for US imports climbed by $914 million to reach $3.27 billion during that fiscal year, meaning Cnergyico’s crude purchases accounted for roughly 80 percent of that overall increase. Qureshi said the refiner could expand its US crude purchases further if Pakistan’s proposed EXIM Bank trade finance facility gets extended to Cnergyico. Islamabad pitched that facility last month as a mechanism allowing Pakistani buyers to delay payments to US exporters for as long as three years. Pakistan has traditionally sourced most of its oil from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, with roughly 90 percent of its oil and liquefied natural gas imports passing through the Strait of Hormuz before the war disrupted that route. Rising fuel costs have added pressure on Islamabad to respond, particularly as fresh protests over inflation and fuel prices broke out this week. The government has also pursued alternative supply routes, including Saudi crude delivered via the Yanbu port on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. Qureshi said Cnergyico is evaluating construction of a second offshore mooring facility linked to its existing storage network, which would allow the company to import and export refined products using large tankers outside Karachi’s congested ports. That project forms part of a broader $1.2 billion upgrade aimed at meeting Euro V fuel standards, reducing furnace oil output and expanding refining capacity to around 200,000 barrels per day. Fawad Basir, head of research at KTrade Securities, said the disruptions in the Middle East have underscored the risks of relying on a single supply corridor. He said using Very Large Crude Carriers to import US oil could reduce freight costs by 25 to 30 percent, while adding a second Single Point Mooring facility would speed up vessel turnaround times. Cnergyico currently processes 156,000 barrels of crude per day and operates Pakistan’s only single point mooring terminal near Karachi, giving it the unique ability among the country’s refiners to handle large tankers directly. The company plans to build a second offshore terminal to accommodate larger or more frequent shipments and intends to upgrade its refinery over the next five to six years. The refiner, which has been running at an average utilization rate of just 30 to 35 percent amid weak domestic demand, is betting that demand for refined oil products will strengthen in the years ahead.

He maintained that legal proceedings related to several properties and other actions are still pending before the relevant courts and forums. Despite this, he alleged that some Bahria Town assets were being taken over and sold before the legal disputes had been fully resolved. The Bahria Town founder also raised concerns over alleged threats against him and members of his family. He claimed that a person accused of threatening him and his family with serious consequences, including death threats, remains free. According to Riaz, an FIR was registered against the alleged individual. He also said that the matter later came before the High Court. However, he claimed that despite the FIR and court intervention, the accused person has not been taken into custody. Riaz urged senior officials to take notice of the situation. He asked them to review the actions being taken against Bahria Town and its properties. He warned that continued freezing, seizure and auction of the company’s assets could have wider economic consequences. The appeal also highlighted the potential impact on ongoing development projects. Riaz claimed that projects worth billions of rupees have been affected by the current situation. He argued that prolonged uncertainty could affect workers, contractors, investors and other parties associated with the projects. Riaz further alleged that the valuation of some assets did not reflect their actual market worth. He claimed that properties were being sold at unusually low prices. He called for the relevant legal procedures to be followed before any further action is taken against the company’s assets. The appeal comes amid ongoing legal and financial disputes involving Bahria Town and its properties. Riaz has asked the authorities to intervene and examine the allegations raised in his appeal.

The clarification came after several manipulated videos appeared online showing seemingly authentic clips of journalists and celebrities announcing that the actor had died. The fabricated reports reportedly claimed that Ashraf had suffered a heart attack. One TikTok account shared multiple AI-generated videos featuring digitally recreated versions of well-known personalities, including actor Bilal Abbas, former cricketer Shahid Afridi and journalist Mansoor Ali Khan. Another fabricated video even appeared to depict a funeral for the popular television host and actor. The incident has once again highlighted the growing problem of artificial intelligence being used to create convincing but completely false celebrity news. Such videos can quickly spread across social media before users have an opportunity to verify their authenticity. Ashraf is also not the first Pakistani celebrity to become the target of false death reports. Singer Tahira Syed faced a similar situation in June when rumours of her death circulated online. She later posted a video confirming that she was alive and well and urged people to verify information before sharing it. Actor Tauseeq Haider also became the subject of AI-generated misinformation when fabricated images circulated claiming that he had married actor Farah Saadia. The two actors jointly rejected the claim and humorously said they were still happily single, while asking the creators to send them wedding gifts if they were going to continue the story. The spread of such fabricated content has raised concerns about the misuse of AI tools to imitate real people and create misleading narratives. With digitally generated videos becoming increasingly realistic, celebrities and public figures are facing greater difficulty in controlling false information about themselves.
