Why you keep opening the fridge

Have you ever opened the fridge looked inside for a few seconds closed it without taking anything and then returned a short time later to do the same thing?

If so you’re not alone.

Psychologists say this habit is usually not caused by hunger.  Instead it is often linked to the way the brain responds to boredom routine and the search for something enjoyable.

Experts explain that when people feel bored or mentally tired the brain looks for something that brings quick pleasure.  Foods high in sugar fat or salt can create a temporary feeling of comfort and satisfaction.

As a result people may walk to the fridge without even realizing why. Opening the fridge can also become part of a daily routine. After spending time working on a computer or taking a short break many people automatically head to the kitchen even if they are not hungry.

Another reason is curiosity. The brain hopes there might be something new or exciting inside such as a favorite dessert leftover food or a snack that was forgotten.

Experts compare this behavior to checking a phone again and again for new messages even when you know there may not be any.

Psychologists say habits often follow a simple pattern: a trigger a routine and a reward. For example feeling bored or finishing a task can trigger the habit of opening the fridge.

Even if no food is eaten the action itself can provide a brief sense of interest or relief.

People who work from home or spend long hours alone may be more likely to develop this habit because boredom can sometimes feel similar to hunger.

Experts also say the environment plays an important role.  A bright kitchen a fridge that is easy to reach or food that is clearly visible can make people more likely to open the fridge.

The next time you find yourself opening the fridge again, ask yourself one simple question “Am I really hungry or am I just looking for something to do?”

According to psychologists the answer may surprise you.

  • Inflation fuels mental health crisis in Pakistan

Rising prices unemployment and ongoing financial pressure are not only reducing people’s buying power in Pakistan but are also affecting their mental and physical health. Mental health experts say that money problems job insecurity growing debt, and uncertainty about the future are leading to higher rates of depression anxiety stress sleep problems irritability family conflicts high blood pressure and heart disease. Clinical psychologist Fatima Tahir explained that when income is lower than household expenses people experience constant stress.  Over time this can develop into depression anxiety anger fear and hopelessness. She warned that without timely mental health support these problems can also lead to physical illness social isolation and family disputes. Psychiatrist and social worker Dr. Ayesha Imran Murtaza who has worked at Fountain House for more than 20 years said inflation unemployment poverty and financial hardship are major reasons behind the growing number of mental health cases in Pakistan. She noted that people with low incomes are more likely to suffer from emotional trauma and mental illness because they often lack family support and cannot afford treatment. According to her poverty and mental illness create a cycle in which each problem makes the other worse. When patients cannot afford medicine their condition often worsens and if the family’s only breadwinner becomes ill the entire household is affected. According to the Pakistan Psychiatric Society National Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (2019–2022) 32.3% of adults in Pakistan are living with a mental health disorder while 37.9% have experienced one at some point in their lives. Anxiety stress and depression are the most common conditions with women low income groups and people living in cities being more affected. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 24 million people in Pakistan need mental health services. However the country faces a severe shortage of specialists. Pakistan has only around 300 to 340 psychiatrists meaning there is roughly one psychiatrist for every 700,000 to 800,000 people. The country also has about 478 psychologists, 3,145 social workers and only 22 occupational therapists working in mental health care. According to Prof. Wajid Ali Akhundzada, one in four young people and one in five children in Pakistan are dealing with mental health issues while around 10% of the population struggles with drug addiction. He stressed that the number of mental health professionals and treatment facilities is far below the country’s growing needs making mental health a national priority. Meanwhile the Punjab government is upgrading the Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH) in Lahore to improve treatment and rehabilitation services. The institute is expanding psychiatric care emergency services addiction treatment rehabilitation programs and professional training under one roof. The government also plans to extend mental health services to district and tehsil level public hospitals so that more patients can receive treatment closer to home.

  • Childhood divorce linked to stroke risk

A new study suggests that people whose parents divorced during their childhood may have a higher risk of having a stroke later in life. The research, published in the journal PLOS One looked at data from more than 13,000 adults aged 65 and older. Researchers found that people whose parents divorced before they turned 18 were about 60% more likely to have experienced a stroke than those who grew up in families where their parents stayed together. Lead researcher Dr. Mary Kate Schilke, a psychology lecturer at Tyndale University in Toronto said the increased risk remained even after taking other factors into account including smoking low physical activity lower income and education levels. She said childhood parental divorce was still linked to a 61% higher risk of stroke in later life. A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.  It can cause brain damage long term disability or even death if not treated quickly. The researchers stressed that this was an observational study meaning it does not prove that parental divorce directly causes strokes. However childhood family stress may be connected to other health conditions that increase stroke risk such as depression diabetes smoking and obesity. Doctors say recognizing the warning signs of a stroke can save lives because early treatment is very important. Common stroke symptoms include. Sudden weakness or numbness in the face arm or leg especially on one side of the body. •Trouble speaking or understanding speech. •Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes. •Difficulty walking dizziness loss of balance or poor coordination. Experts say anyone with these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately as fast treatment can greatly improve recovery.

  • New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail. The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail. The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images. According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases. Closer look at Sun’s surface The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured. In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope. Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma. Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed. Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters? Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work. Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear. The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.

  • Skin Cancer warning signs

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world affecting millions of people every year. It often begins with small changes on the skin that may look harmless causing many people to ignore them.  However spotting these early signs and getting medical advice quickly can help save lives. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) around 330,000 new cases of melanoma the deadliest type of skin cancer were reported worldwide in 2022. About 60,000 people died from the disease that year. Harvard trained dermatologist Dr. Daniel Sugai says people should pay close attention to any unusual skin changes. if a pimple bump or sore on your face does not heal within a month it should be checked by a dermatologist. A spot that keeps bleeding or does not heal can also be a warning sign of skin cancer. Dr. Sugai says these symptoms may point to basal cell carcinoma the most common type of skin cancer. In the United States alone about 3.6 million cases are diagnosed each year. This cancer may appear as a shiny or clear bump a rough or scaly patch or a dark brown black or bluish spot on the skin. He also explained that basal cell carcinoma grows from cells that create new skin cells.  These cancer cells often develop tiny tree like blood vessels which can make the affected area bleed more easily. In people with darker skin tones the cancer may appear as a pigmented or darker colored spot. Experts say any new mole spot sore or skin change that does not heal should never be ignored. Early diagnosis and treatment greatly improve the chances of successful treatment and can help prevent the cancer from becoming more serious.

  • Parents stress linked to giving children smartphones

Many parents give smartphones to their children and a major reason behind this behaviour has now been identified. Parents who experience stress tend to give their children devices to keep them occupied or calm while also being less likely to enforce limits on screen time. A study conducted by the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University included 822 parents raising children between the ages of 4 and 8. The participants provided information through online surveys about their children’s behavior, parental stress and screen-time habits. The findings showed that parents tend to allow their children to use smartphones for longer periods when their children’s behaviour becomes difficult to manage. Researchers said parents should not hesitate to seek support for managing their own stress. They also advised parents to set limits on children’s screen time and provide them with purposeful, age-appropriate content. They emphasized that parents should establish appropriate boundaries and spend quality time with their children to promote a healthy environment. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on children’s excessive smartphone use. A study published in January 2026 explored links between online content and problems related to children’s development. Similarly, research published in BMC Public Health in October 2024 found that spending excessive time in front of screens can have negative effects on mental health. The risk of depression, anxiety, irritability and other problems was particularly higher among children aged 9 and 10. The research found that the more time children spent in front of screens, the more severe their symptoms of depression tended to be. According to the study, activities such as video chatting, watching videos and playing video games were associated with a greater increase in this risk.
