New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail.

The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail.

The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images.

According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases.

Closer look at Sun’s surface

The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured.

In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope.

Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma.

Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed.

Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters?

Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work.

Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear.

The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.

Her career progressed rapidly, leading to a full professorship at Stanford University by the age of 31. Mirzakhani’s work specialized in theoretical areas such as hyperbolic geometry, Riemann surfaces, and moduli spaces. She’s expert in abstract concepts that involve understanding the geometry and dynamic possibilities of complex curved surfaces. While her research was firmly rooted in pure mathematics, it held profound implications for theoretical physics, quantum field theory and cryptography. In 2014, at the age of 37, Mirzakhani achieved a historical milestone. She was awarded the Fields Medal, officially known as the International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics. Widely regarded as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for mathematics, the honor is presented only once every four years to exceptional scholars under 40. Mirzakhani became both the first woman and the first Iranian ever to receive the award since its establishment in 1936. Despite national and international acclaim, Mirzakhani remained famously modest. She often referred to herself as a slow mathematician. She emphasized that true insight comes from patience, resilience, and a willingness to feel lost before finding a breakthrough. To her, mathematics was not about fast calculations, but about deep, enduring understanding. Tragically, her life was cut short. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, she continued her scholarly pursuits while fighting the disease. By 2016, the cancer had spread to her liver and bones. On July 14, 2017, Mirzakhani passed away at Stanford Hospital at the age of 40. Her passing sparked widespread tributes across the globe, with academic institutions, world leaders, and fellow scientists celebrating her contributions.   • Immature Minds Need Nourishment, Not Punishment

    By Tuba Khan A nation’s commitment to justice is not judged by the way it treats its powerful citizens, but the way it treats its vulnerable members of society. One of the most fragile creations of God are the children who need love and care, but when they are punished for their mistakes, abused or exploited for their mischievous acts and left unheard in their hour of need, they tend to become juvenile delinquents. They require guidance and encouragement to learn from their mistakes, so that they can grow into responsible and confident individuals. But unfortunately, in Pakistan, children are the most neglected group in terms of justice. Though Pakistan has juvenile justice laws and is a signatory to several international commitments. However, it fails to honor these obligations. According to the KidsRights Index 2020, Pakistan ranks 147th out of 182 nations in access to justice for children. Juvenile delinquency is not inherent; rather, it is often fueled by social, familial, psychological and environmental conditions. Children being observant and curious by nature are highly adaptable to their surroundings. Family, mentors and the community instill values in a child, shaping children’s behavior. However, factors that lead to juvenile delinquency include parental conflicts or separation, peer pressure, exposure to negative, aggressive and violent environments, deprivation of education, financial resources, affection and other basic necessities, impaired cognitive development, poor reasoning skills and psychological issues, such as impulsiveness, antisocial traits and mental disorders. Moreover, drug addiction, access to harmful content on social media, the dark web and illegal means also exacerbate the growing evil of youth delinquency. Together, these factors shape a child’s social and moral development and provoke delinquent behavior. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) defines a child as one under the age of eighteen. Below this age, children should not be treated with brutality or strict laws. Critics often argue that crime is crime whether it is committed by a child or an adult. However, the philosophy of juvenile justice acknowledges that cognitive development is not yet mature and children have an immense capacity for rehabilitation. A study indicates that the children between 16 and 18 years of age are more likely to commit offences as compared to the younger ones There is always hope for and from every child. Recognizing these realities, the global community embraced a child-centered approach to juvenile justice and adopted basic principles to deal with young offenders. First, it must be made clear that when a child comes into conflict with the law, alternatives should be offered instead of processing him/her through the formal justice system. Second, there needs to be an exclusive juvenile justice system. Third, during the investigation, a juvenile should not be kept in a regular police station and the judicial process needs to be quick. Lastly, it must be ensured that the state gives a message to juveniles that it believes in their potential for reform. International laws promote the reintegration of children into society, but sadly, this approach is missing in the juvenile justice system of Pakistan. Punjab has only two Borstal Institutes & Juvenile Jails at Bahawalpur and Faisalabad, while Sindh has five Youthful Offenders Industrial Schools in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana and Dadu, although the facility in Dadu is non-operational. The KPK has one Borstal in Bannu, whereas Balochistan does not have even a single functional Borstal Institute or juvenile jail. This lack of physical infrastructure causes a considerable number of juveniles to be imprisoned in regular prisons. Placing children in such an overcrowded environment exposes them in proximity to criminals and causes psychological distress, which undermines the rehabilitation capacity of prisoners. No less troubling is the lack of juvenile courts across the country. As a result, most children have continued to go through regular courts that cannot cater to their developmental needs. A joint report by UNICEF and the Commissioner for Children’s Complaint Office of Pakistan has found that as of November 2023, 81% of the total juvenile offenders in Punjab were detained in ordinary jails, and only 144 prisoners were housed in Borstal Institutes. In January 2026, Punjab Prison Department released a report, according to which there are 718 juvenile prisoners in Punjab, while the total capacity is 658 prisoners. The shortage of juvenile institutions further highlights the flaws in the juvenile justice system of Pakistan. It is the state’s responsibility to transform vulnerable children into responsible citizens. Therefore, the Government of Pakistan must move beyond merely passing laws that remain largely unimplemented and instead take concrete and pragmatic steps. The country should develop an implementation plan for the juvenile justice system, allocate adequate financial resources, strengthen the diversion mechanism to resolve minor juvenile cases outside the formal justice system, establish child-friendly rehabilitation centers that promote a sense of responsibility towards society, develop specialized juvenile police units to replace the use of police lock-ups for children, protect juveniles from torture and capital punishment while in detention, recruit trained staff, address the root causes of juvenile delinquency, such as poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, unsafe neighborhoods and the growing number of street children through social welfare programs and introduce a real-time Prison Management Information System (PMIS) to monitor juvenile offenders and support evidence-based decision-making. Every child lost to crime symbolizes not merely an individual failure but a social breakdown and failure of state governance. Invest in the rehabilitation of juvenile offenders to build a safer and stable Pakistan tomorrow. Immature minds need nourishment, not punishment.

    Through the pages of your newspaper, I would like to draw attention to the increasing number of road accidents in our area. Road accidents have become a serious problem, causing injuries, deaths and suffering for many families. Overspeeding, careless driving, dangerous overtaking and ignoring traffic rules are some of the major causes of these accidents. Poor road conditions and the lack of proper traffic control make the situation even worse. The authorities should take strict action against those who violate traffic rules. Speed limits should be enforced, roads should be repaired, and traffic awareness campaigns should be organized in schools and communities. Every life is precious. Drivers must understand that a few minutes saved through reckless driving are never worth risking a human life. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate steps to reduce road accidents and make our roads safer

  • Japan launches cooling shirt with built in fans

    Japan is finding a new way to deal with extreme summer heat.  A Japanese clothing company has introduced a formal looking shirt with built in fans that can help keep people cool while they are outside. The company, Yofuku no Aoyama has launched a short sleeved shirt fitted with two small fans. The fans circulate air inside the shirt helping cool the wearer while walking or traveling. At first glance the shirt looks like a normal office shirt. However it has a small cooling system hidden inside. The fans are placed near the lower back and push air through the shirt to reduce heat and discomfort. Cooling clothes with built in fans have become popular in Japan over the past few years. They were mainly used by construction workers garbage collectors, security staff and other outdoor workers.  Most of these products looked like jackets or work vests rather than regular office clothing. With summers becoming hotter demand for cooling clothes is now growing among office workers and other people who spend time outdoors. To meet this demand Yofuku no Aoyama developed the shirt in partnership with FZN a company that specializes in fan powered clothing. The shirt comes with two fans and a rechargeable battery. The company has tried to keep the cooling system as light as possible. Each fan weighs around 95 grams, while the battery pack weighs about 165 grams. The fans are visible from the back but the designers have kept the rest of the system as discreet as possible so the shirt still looks suitable for an office environment. The company has not provided specific information about how loud the fans are so they may not be  completely silent. The shirt is mainly designed for traveling rather than meetings. Most offices and meeting rooms already have air conditioning so there is little need to use the fans indoors. However the cooling system can be useful when employees walk between meetings travel by public transport or spend time outside in hot weather. It may also help workers arrive at their destination without becoming heavily sweaty reducing the need to change clothes before continuing their work. Price and Availability The Coochowear Short Sleeve Shirt is being sold as a complete cooling package for 17,490 Japanese yen. The package includes the shirt two fans a rechargeable battery pack and a charging cable. The shirt is available in blue and gray with medium large and extra large sizes. For an international student, these seemingly ordinary moments reveal something extraordinary: a place where centuries of cultural heritage and the ambitions of a modern nation exist in harmony. When I first arrived in China from Pakistan, I expected to encounter advanced technology, modern cities, and world-class universities. Those expectations were quickly fulfilled. What I did not anticipate was how naturally tradition and innovation would coexist in everyday life. At Yanshan University, I discovered that China’s progress is not defined by replacing its past but by building upon it. Every day offers new evidence that preserving cultural identity and embracing innovation are not opposing goals—they are complementary forces shaping the country’s future. Walking across campus, I often see students reading beneath ancient-style pavilions before entering laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology. Respect for education, family, community, and tradition continues to shape daily life even as technology transforms industries and society. This combination has challenged many of my previous assumptions about modernization. Rather than viewing tradition and innovation as competing forces, I have come to see them as partners in creating resilient and sustainable progress. As the evening lights illuminate the campus and students gather to discuss assignments, share meals, or simply enjoy a walk with friends, Yanshan University becomes more than a place of higher learning. It becomes a meeting point where cultures, ideas, and aspirations come together. Every conversation, every shared experience, and every lesson contributes to a broader understanding that education is not confined to classrooms—it is found in the relationships we build and the perspectives we gain. For me, studying at Yanshan University has been more than an academic journey. It has been an opportunity to witness how a nation can confidently embrace the future while honoring its past. In an increasingly interconnected world, this balance offers an important lesson: true progress is achieved not by abandoning tradition, but by allowing it to inspire innovation. Here, where tradition meets tomorrow, I have found not only a university but also a deeper appreciation of China’s enduring spirit and its vision for the future.

  • Man returns book He stole 40 years ago

    A US bookstore staff was left surprised when a package arrived containing a book that had been stolen from the store nearly 40 years ago. The package also included an apology letter and $100 in cash as compensation. The package was recently delivered to Bookleggers, a bookstore in Old Town Eureka, California. When the staff opened it, they found a copy of The Unstrung Harp. The letter explained that the sender had stolen the book from the store about four decades ago.  He said he was a student at the time and was struggling with alcohol addiction and financial problems. He also wrote that he found the book recently while cleaning out his garage. After discovering that the bookstore was still operating he decided to return the book and apologize for what he had done. The man included $100 with the book and told the store owners they could contact him if they wanted to take any further action. Bookstore owner Jennifer McPhaiden said she and her staff were deeply touched by the letter. She said it was surprising to see someone return after so many years to admit their mistake and try to make things right.
