The jaded gender talks

 By Saman Aftab

We are so habitual of listening to the gender inequality, women empowerment, and ever growing population talks that now these topics have become an essential subject for the matter of discussing societal issues. But what we people have lacked to unravel is the very essence of these debates. Why gender inequality exists? Why we are still lagging behind in terms of employing more women? Why we are unable to control the growing rate of population in our country? Before addressing the ‘absolutely unavoidable’ questions, let me take the readers down an irksome memory lane of my life. Last year when our maid broke the news of her pregnancy to us, our most obvious question was why now? Considering her age which was 42 years that time and her financial grim along with unsupportive role of her husband in bearing the burden of their five children, this question clicked in every mind. And her answer though not surprising was quite gloomy for the existence of every female in this world; “baji, larka chahye humen” (we need a boy). She had four daughters and a deaf son. Her statement broke my heart because it questioned the capabilities of her daughters who were all physically and mentally sound.

This memory was not worth forgetting because as a female it made me feel inferior. But this Babygirl vs Babyboy thing is not new, in fact it is one of the most deeply rooted concerns of our society. The normalcy of demanding the birth of a boy from a married woman is consolidating with the passage of time. The worst part of this matter – it’s getting acceptance. Ironically, majority of mothers in law showcase such demands to the newly married couple, as if it is in their hands to ‘design’ the genetic make-up of their offspring. The heart wrenching memory got afresh, when Tabassum shared her so called good news with us. Tabassum, 35 years old woman who works as a maid in three houses, a mother of four girls is expecting again for the sake of receiving a son this time. Her good news reminded me of her last fourth delivery when she gave birth to a girl in government hospital and she was made to give her daughter to a rich family on the persuasion of her drug addict husband. Whether they got money in return was dubious but chances of such happening were bright. I really hope and pray that this time she gets a son, otherwise the couple will continue to bring unwanted girls in this world and ruin their lives. For all the existing daughters of this couple are living a dark and disowned life. This brutal reality of life is not constrained to lower class people and it has crossed the demarcation of social groupings based on all classes, religions and races. Let us take an example of my sister’s friend, who is married to a well-established businessman and living in a posh locality. The poor lady who has a rich family, is a mother of two cute little girls. Although the little girls born to riches are living a good life, their mother is undergoing severe mental anxiety and pressure for not having a son. And of course, she for the sake of getting rid of such pressure is planning to have another baby neglecting her present deteriorating health condition. Unfortunately, the instances are innumerable and the rate of their occurrences is increasing day by day.

Why boy child is mostly preferred over girl child? The answer lies in the heart of several burdens tied with bringing up a girl till her marriage. Among so many liabilities, the extra protection needed by the girls in our society and the curse of dowry have aggravated the scenario to such an extent that today girls are seen as “misfortune”. Of course exceptions are always there. Let us shift the focus from this melancholy to addressing those “absolutely unavoidable” questions raised earlier. 1: Gender inequality; Homo sapiens (humans) are generally categorized into three groups namely man, woman and transgender. Men are always ranked superior for enormous reasons but if we see things more pragmatically, it becomes evident that parents are left with sons in their old age while their daughters somehow abandon them and serve in laws for the rest of their lives. Call it our family system, it is the way it is. Then how can girls be loved or demanded? For voicing rights for equality, women should also bear the responsibilities equally. If a woman is capable of doing an employment being educated or skilled, she must pursue it for sake of giving all the best of resources to her parents that are expected of a son. The root cause of inequality among genders is the leverage given to men of being more useful and thus more needed. As long as the share of women in the society is constrained only to domestic chores and family caretaking, this inequality will never fade away. More women should be encouraged to become financially sufficient and independent. But how? This leads to our second question.

2: Women empowerment; there should be more campaigning with regards to educating girls and investing in their skill building. More powerful the educational background of a woman is, more will be the chances of her getting a good job for the sake of financial security. Thus, the number of women working for the betterment of society and raising capital will rise exponentially. And finally once these two milestones are achieved, the third ordeal of our country will evade automatically.

3: Overpopulation: as discussed in the start, demand and desire for the birth of a son has contributed a lot more towards overpopulation. Men are expected to take care of their parents but the same goes for women also. And in this age of compatibility, women should come forward and play a vital part in developing this society. Instead of placing all the burdens on the parents’ shoulders, women should lend them an even stronger shoulder to uphold their own worth and value. If we acknowledge the capabilities of a well brought up girl, there will be more gratitude on her birth instead of endless remorse. Once the birth of a girl is validated as much as of a boy then along with awareness of family planning, the threatening issue of overpopulation can be curbed.

Lastly, the lack of respect for women in a patriarchal society is making our environment terrifically suffocating. It’s high time that we should actually work together and dig deeper for cutting the roots of all gender related concerns. If this does not happen, the curse of gender biasness will never break and the jaded gender talks will continue till earth’s doomsday.

  • New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail. The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail. The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images. According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases. Closer look at Sun’s surface The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured. In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope. Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma. Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed. Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters? Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work. Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear. The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.

  • Gym and height myth or fact?

You may have heard people say that going to the gym or lifting weights can stop your height from growing.  Because of this belief some young people avoid exercise and weight training. But is this really true?  Let’s find out. Going to the gym has become very popular among people who want to stay fit and healthy.  Some people exercise to lose weight while others want to gain muscle and strength. Gym workouts are especially popular among young people. However several myths about weight training still create confusion. One common myth is that going to the gym at a young age can stop height growth. This belief is especially common among teenagers and young people between 18 and 20 years old. Can weightlifting stop height growth? Many people believe that lifting heavy weights at a young age can prevent the body from growing taller especially when a person carries heavy weights on their shoulders. However there is no strong scientific evidence that normal strength training stops a person’s height from increasing.  Weightlifting itself does not automatically stop growth. However young people should be careful when doing heavy workouts.  Using too much weight or exercising with the wrong technique can cause injuries.  Younger people should learn proper form and when possible exercise under the guidance of a qualified trainer. What actually affects height? A person’s height is mainly influenced by genetics. Hormones nutrition sleep and overall lifestyle can also play a role in healthy growth.if the body does not produce certain growth related hormones properly it can affect normal development. Poor nutrition can also prevent the body from getting the nutrients it needs for healthy growth. The body also contains growth plates which are areas near the ends of certain bones that help bones grow longer during childhood and adolescence.  These growth plates naturally close as a person reaches physical maturity. Therefore going to the gym does not simply stop height growth.  A healthy diet proper exercise enough sleep and safe workout techniques are more important for overall growth and fitness.

  • Forgotten memories may not be gone

New research suggests that some memories that seem to be forgotten may not completely disappear from the brain.  Instead they may remain stored in a quiet state and can sometimes return when a person receives the right reminder or is placed in a familiar environment. Scientists studied fruit flies and found that memories could become active again when the flies were placed in an environment similar to the one where the memory was first formed. This suggests that some memories may not be erased with time. They may simply become harder for the brain to access. Human memory is a very complex system. Some memories become weaker over time while others may suddenly return after seeing a familiar place, smelling a certain scent or noticing another related signal. However researchers still do not fully understand why the brain sometimes creates false memories along with real ones.  Understanding how the brain brings back true memories and creates inaccurate ones remains an important question for scientists. The findings could  help researchers better understand how memories are stored in the brain and how different surroundings or reminders can help bring forgotten memories back.

    The Sham Shaman

In 1968, a graduate student in anthropology at the University of California, published a book that would reshape the publishing world. Titled The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge. The book purported to be a faithful academic field report by Carlos Castaneda detailing his apprenticeship under an elderly Yaqui shaman named Don Juan Matus in the Mexican desert. Castaneda’s account became an overnight sensation as it blended desert mysticism, hallucinogenic plant rituals, and philosophical paradoxes. It sold millions of copies, earning him a doctorate from UCLA. This success made him a guru to icons like Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Octavio Paz. A Life Built on Fabrications Long before he wrote about desert sorcery, Castaneda had mastered the art of reinventing himself. Born César Carlos Salvador Arana in Peru in 1925—the son of a humble watchmaker—he routinely rewrote his origin story. He claimed to have been born in Brazil, shaved years off his age, and concocted wild tales of fighting as a soldier in North Korea or working as a border spy. In reality, he fled Peru after fathering a child at thirteen, eventually making his way to Los Angeles in the 1950s. Ground-breaking Anthropological Discoveries. Yet beneath the celebrated field notes lay one of the most audacious literary fabrications in modern history. Don Juan Matus was not a real person. The desert apprenticeships never took place. Castaneda was not a devoted field researcher. He was a master illusionist who deceived prestigious academics and eager seekers alike. When Castaneda enrolled at UCLA, he found an academic environment eager for authentic indigenous wisdom and existential insight. Synthesizing disparate ideas into a singular narrative, he assembled Don Juan’s philosophical worldview by freely borrowing from European philosophy, Buddhist theology, ethnomethodology, and popular horror fiction. To his impressionable professors, the resulting texts appeared to be ground-breaking anthropological discoveries. Unraveling the Hoax While Castaneda’s books topped bestseller lists throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, critical cracks in his story soon began to widen into chasms. Skeptical researchers and anthropologists began scrutinizing the timeline and claims in his field notes. Archive Contradictions: UCLA library records revealed that on dates Castaneda claimed to be in the Sonoran desert learning shamanic secrets, he was actually signed into the university library reading room. Botanical and Cultural Errors: Experts on Yaqui culture noted that the spiritual concepts and language attributed to Don Juan bore almost no resemblance to authentic Yaqui traditions or language structures. Philosophical Echoes: Literary sleuths discovered that Don Juan’s most profound dialogues were near-verbatim adaptations of modern academic sociology and Western philosophical texts. Despite being systematically exposed by critics, Castaneda maintained his mystique. He avoided photo shoots, refused interviews, and cultivated an aura of secretive invulnerability. He also assured his devotees that any perceived discrepancies were simply part of a sorcerer’s duty to erase his personal history. The Guru’s Reclusive Cult and Legacy As public acclaim gave way to scholarly embarrassment, Castaneda retreated further into reclusiveness. In the 1990s, he launched a movement called Tensegrity. He promoted a series of physical movements he claimed were ancient Toltec magical passes. Critics quickly noted their striking resemblance to modern martial arts taught by a local Santa Monica instructor. Surrounding himself with a inner circle of devout disciples in Los Angeles, Castaneda governed his group with increasing paranoia until his death from cancer in 1998. Anthropology’s Ultimate Trickster Ultimately, Carlos Castaneda remains a complex figure in cultural history. His anthropological credentials were exposed as entirely fraudulent. His writings captured the yearning of an era desperate for spiritual transcendence beyond traditional structures. He stands as anthropology’s ultimate trickster. He’s a man who turned a fictional thesis into a million-dollar empire and proved that, given the right narrative, millions of people will gladly step through the looking glass.

    An alien planet

Imagine living on a world where the start of the day and the end of the day aren’t just different times, but entirely different environments. On one horizon, morning arrives in a chilly mist where vaporized rocks might condense into glittering, mineral clouds. On the opposite horizon, evening sets in as a roaring, hyper-heated furnace hot enough to shred water molecules into raw hydrogen and oxygen. This isn’t sci-fi world-building, it is the reality of WASP-121 b, an extreme exoplanet located roughly 850 light-years from Earth. Astronomers analyzing data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have uncovered unprecedented details about this distant world, proving for the first time that its morning and evening twilight zones are fundamentally different from one another. A World Locked in Perpetual Extremes WASP-121 b belongs to a class of cosmic objects known as hot Jupiters: giant gas planets that orbit extraordinarily close to their parent stars. Because of this extreme proximity, the planet is tidally locked. Just as the Moon always presents the same face to Earth, WASP-121 b always presents the exact same hemisphere to its star. One side endures an unrelenting, eternal day with scorching temperatures topping 2,500 degrees Celsius (4,500 degrees Fahrenheit). The opposite side faces permanent night, staring into cold space. For years, astrophysicists hypothesized that the narrow transition zones between day and night. The planet’s terminators might harbor complex, asymmetrical weather patterns. However, confirming this required measuring subtle variations in starlight as the planet passed in front of its star. How Jet Streams Reshape Alien Skies Using JWST’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), researchers tracked how starlight filtered through different parts of WASP-121 b’s atmosphere. The findings revealed a dramatic contrast between the morning transition and the evening transition. The driver behind this strange weather is a planetary-scale jet stream. Superheated air on the dayside doesn’t stay still; it rushes toward the cooler nightside at extreme speeds. Because the planet rotates toward the east, these violent winds carry thermal energy around the globe and dump the bulk of that heat directly into the evening region. As a result, WASP-121 b’s evening atmosphere grows significantly hotter than its morning counterpart. Heat causes gases to expand, puffing up the evening sky like a inflated balloon. When starlight filters through this swollen atmospheric layer, it reveals an environment so fierce that water molecules cannot survive intact. Clouds of Metal and Torn Molecules In the searing furnace of the evening sky, chemical bonds break. Water vapor brought in from the dayside is torn apart by the heat, leaving behind a sky depleted of chemical stability. As those same winds continue their journey around the cold nightside, the atmosphere gradually cools down. By the time the air sweeps around to form the morning twilight, the story flips. Here, temperatures drop enough for chemical compounds to reassemble. Scientists suspect that in this cooler morning zone, minerals such as silicates condense out of the gas phase. Instead of water clouds like those on Earth, WASP-121 b’s morning sky likely features reflective clouds made of liquid rock or iron droplets. These metallic clouds block radiation from deeper layers, making the morning side appear even cooler to space observatories. A New Era of Exoplanet Meteorology Until recently, studying alien worlds meant treating entire planets as single, uniform points of light. This discovery demonstrates that modern space telescopes can resolve climate dynamics across distinct regions of a world hundreds of light-years away.   By capturing the contrast between a planet’s morning and evening, astronomers are moving from simply discovering exoplanets to mapping their active weather systems. WASP-121 b may be far too hostile for life as we know it, but understanding its violent atmospheric currents brings us one step closer to reading the skies of smaller, cooler, and potentially habitable worlds in the future.

  • Why Popcorn became the ultimate movie snack

Watching TV or a movie often feels incomplete without something to eat. For many people popcorn is the first snack that comes to mind. But have you ever wondered how popcorn became the most popular food at movie theaters? The tradition began in the 19th century when popcorn became a popular snack at fairs festivals and circuses. In those days it was usually sold from small street carts. A major turning point came in 1885 when the first popcorn machine was invented. This made it easier to prepare fresh popcorn quickly and sell it to large crowds. By 1907, the United States had nearly 5,000 movie theaters with tickets costing just 5 cents. Popcorn sellers started placing their carts outside theaters where moviegoers could easily buy popcorn before going inside. As movie theaters became more modern and luxurious many owners banned outside food. However the rule did not last long. By the 1930s theaters began selling popcorn inside and outside their buildings realizing it was a profitable business. Today popcorn is one of the biggest sources of income for many cinemas with some estimates suggesting it accounts for up to 85% of concession stand sales. Another reason popcorn became the perfect movie snack is that it is light easy to eat and does not make much noise allowing people to enjoy their film without disturbing others.
