Why you should stop sitting on your wallet

Pain in the lower back hip or leg is often blamed on spine problems.  However doctors say a simple daily habit may also be responsible.

Sitting for long periods with a thick wallet in your back pocket can put pressure on an important nerve causing pain numbness or tingling.

This condition is commonly known as “wallet sciatica” or “fat wallet syndrome.” It is not a disease but a problem caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Because its symptoms are similar to sciatica caused by spine problems many people mistake it for a back condition.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower back and runs through the hips and down each leg.

Sitting on a thick wallet can make one side of the body higher than the other creating an uneven sitting position.  Over time this can put extra pressure on the nerve and lead to discomfort.

Doctors say this constant pressure may reduce blood flow to the nerve cause irritation and lead to inflammation.

In some cases it may also contribute to a condition called piriformis syndrome which can be confused with a spine problem.

Common symptoms include a dull ache in the lower back or hip burning or shooting pain down the back of the leg tingling or numbness in the leg or foot and pain that gets worse after sitting for a long time.

These symptoms usually appear on the same side where the wallet is carried. Experts warn that similar symptoms can also be caused by a slipped disc spinal narrowing or other nerve conditions. For this reason people should not rely on online information to diagnose themselves.

If the pain continues a medical check up is important to find the real cause. People who sit for long hours such as office workers drivers and frequent travelers may face a higher risk.

Carrying a wallet packed with cards receipts and cash makes the problem even more likely.

The good news is that many people improve simply by changing this habit.

Keeping your wallet in a front pocket jacket or bag removing unnecessary items and using digital payments can help reduce pressure on the nerve.

Doctors also recommend standing up and walking for a few minutes every 30 to 45 minutes sitting with good posture and doing gentle stretching exercises with professional guidance.

If pain numbness or difficulty walking continues or becomes severe seek medical care immediately.

Experts say ongoing back or leg pain should never be ignored as it may sometimes be a sign of a more serious nerve or spine problem.

  • Our Women Communicators of Tomorrow

By Mehreen Imambaksh Throughout history, women have possessed powerful thoughts, deep emotions, and creative voices; yet, many of these voices have gone unnoticed. Their experiences were frequently limited to their homes, their abilities were questioned, and their intellectual development was neglected. However, literature, history, and social thought expose that women were capable of uttering knowledge, shaping culture, and influencing society, but patriarchal systems often restricted their visibility. For centuries, women were expected to remain silent in public intellectual areas. Their role was widely limited to household responsibilities, whereas education, authorship, and public speaking were dominated by men. Yet despite these barriers, many women endured to write, think, and challenge the systems that tried to silence them. One beautiful example can be found in the nineteenth century with the eminent novel *Wuthering Heights*, written by Emily Brontë (1847). Today the novel is considered one of the masterpieces in English literature. Moreover, Emily Brontë did not publish it under her original name; rather, she used the pen name Ellis Bell. Similarly, her sisters also adopted the same approaches. Charlotte Brontë published *Jane Eyre* under the name of Currer Bell, and Anne Brontë published *The Tenant of Wildfell Hall* under the name of Acton Bell. The reason behind these pen names was simple but widely revealing: society frequently refused to take women writers seriously. The Brontë sisters were highly imaginative and intellectually able, yet they felt pressured to hide their identities to ensure their work could be approved. Their circumstances examine the huge restrictions placed upon women’s voices during that time. Long before the Brontë sisters, early feminist thinkers had raised concerns about women’s lack of education and freedom. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote *A Vindication of the Rights of Woman*, challenging that women should have equal access to education and intellectual opportunities. She said that women were treated as inferior in society not because they lacked capability, but because they were refused the chance to advance their minds. More than a century later, this problem was discussed again by Virginia Woolf in her masterpiece work *A Room of One’s Own* (1929). She famously argued that women in the past were refused both financial independence and private space, which restricted them from freely uttering knowledge. Therefore, she said a woman needs not merely talent but also freedom and equality to express her feelings and thoughts. Modern scholars have further examined how systems of knowledge can silence subaltern voices. In her essay “Can the Subaltern Speak?” (1988), Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak introduced the idea of epistemic violence, which means how dominant systems of knowledge remove or suppress the voices of certain groups, especially women and colonized communities. When women’s ideas are ignored or removed, their experiences are excluded from the production of knowledge, creating a form of intellectual oppression. These rooted examples depict that women’s silence was never because of a lack of intelligence or creativity. Instead, it was the result of social systems that demotivated or limited their role in participation in intellectual and public life. Even today, this evidence remains visible in many societies. In many cultures, women still hesitate to talk openly, particularly on public platforms or digital spaces. Furthermore, social expectations and fear of judgment frequently create unseen obstacles that prevent women from sharing their thoughts and feelings. This hesitation is not always enforced directly; sometimes it evolves internally due to long-standing social pressures. Moreover, I personally experienced this hesitation in my own life. For many years, I believed in the significance of women’s ability, yet I was not actively immersed in initiatives related to it. One cause for this was my anxiety about visibility on social media platforms to reveal my feelings and ideas because I feared how society, especially as a Baloch student, might react to a woman openly sharing her ideas. This anxiety is not unfamiliar. Many women feel unsure about expressing themselves publicly because they expect critique or misunderstanding. However, personal growth frequently begins with a small step. For me, that step was creating my social media platforms such as Medium, a LinkedIn profile, and starting to share my writings, including poems and reflections based on my experiences. At the start, this act felt common, yet slowly opened new chances. Through this visibility, I became connected with extensive intellectual and professional networks, which ultimately led me to become immersed in women’s ascension. Being involved in this initiative has allowed me to interact with women from various cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. These interactions have been widely improving. They have shown me that when women communicate and share experiences across cultures, they create unique forms of understanding and collective growth. This experience shows that women’s empowerment does not always happen through major changes, but it begins slowly when women start to express themselves, engage in conversations, and share knowledge with others. Communication is one of the influential tools that helps women to connect their personal experiences with global discussions about equality and justice. However, change needs cooperation. Women’s power should not be seen as an effort between men and women. Instead, it should be perceived as a collaborative struggle to create a fair and inclusive society. Both men and women play a major role in supporting and motivating women’s voices. Traditionally, patriarchal societies frequently reduced women to limited roles, especially examining their function as a child-bearing machine. Whereas motherhood is an essential and valuable role, it should never define the entirety of a woman’s identity. Women have intellectual capabilities, creative skills, and leadership qualities that can contribute importantly to society. Education plays an essential role in changing these circumstances. When women receive education, they gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to contribute actively in social, economic, and intellectual life. Educated women are more capable of expressing their thoughts, challenging injustice, and participating in the development of their communities. Furthermore, the impact of women’s education extends beyond the individual. When women are educated, they can brighten their children’s lives and motivate the next generations to learn. Historically, when women

Peshawar High Court orders inquiry into missing ci…

The Peshawar High Court has issued a written order on a petition seeking the recovery of a missing citizen and directed the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. According to the written order, the CCPO has been instructed to appoint an inquiry officer to investigate the disappearance. The court specifically directed that the officer appointed for the inquiry must be of at least the rank of inspector, ensuring that the investigation is conducted by a senior police official. The court also issued several directions regarding the collection of evidence. It ordered the investigating officer to obtain CCTV footage from a private petrol station where the petitioner and his brother were present at the time of the incident. The footage is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the citizen’s disappearance and identify any individuals who may have been involved. The court further directed the authorities to record the statement of the petitioner and collect all available evidence related to the case. The inquiry officer has been instructed to examine the facts thoroughly and ensure that no relevant piece of evidence is overlooked during the investigation. The Peshawar High Court ordered that the inquiry be completed within one month and that a detailed report be submitted to the court after its conclusion. The deadline was set to ensure that the investigation proceeds without unnecessary delay and that the family receives information about the whereabouts of the missing citizen. The written order stated that the petitioner and his brother were present at a private petrol pump when the incident allegedly occurred. According to the petitioner’s account, his brother was taken to an unknown location on May 15. Since then, his whereabouts have reportedly remained unknown, prompting the petitioner to approach the high court seeking his recovery. The court also took note of the position presented by the police during the proceedings. According to the written order, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chamkani Police Station rejected the allegations concerning the disappearance of the petitioner’s brother. Despite the SHO’s denial, the high court considered it necessary to order a formal inquiry and directed senior police authorities to investigate the matter independently. The court’s directions include examining CCTV footage, recording statements and gathering all relevant evidence to determine what happened to the missing citizen. The inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and determine whether further legal action is required. By directing the CCPO to appoint an officer of inspector rank or above, the court has emphasized the need for a serious and transparent investigation. The authorities have been given one month to complete the inquiry and submit their findings before the court. The case will proceed based on the report and evidence collected during the investigation.

Karachi Court orders Mir Ali Raza’s exhumation

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate’s court in Karachi has approved a plea seeking the exhumation of businessman Mir Ali Raza’s body, directing the Sindh Health Secretary to immediately constitute a medical board to oversee the process. The Judicial Magistrate (East) announced the decision on Thursday after reserving its verdict following arguments from both sides. The court instructed the relevant authorities to complete the exhumation as soon as possible to facilitate a fresh medical examination. During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner argued that the police had no legal grounds to object to the exhumation, maintaining that the procedure would be carried out under the supervision of the Police Surgeon and the Medical Legal Officer (MLO), as required under the law. The lawyer further informed the court that the Police Surgeon had identified several deficiencies in the initial post-mortem report. According to the submissions, no X-rays were conducted, the exact cause of death was not conclusively established, and the report was allegedly prepared on assumptions rather than comprehensive medical findings. The court questioned how such an order could be passed without first issuing notice to the investigating officer. In response, the government prosecutor stated that the prosecution had no objection to the exhumation, describing the matter as one involving the search for the truth in a human life. The petitioner’s counsel argued that notifying the investigating officer at this stage could unnecessarily delay the proceedings and affect the timely collection of forensic evidence. After noting the prosecution’s no-objection stance, the court accepted the family’s application and directed the Health Secretary to form a medical board without delay. The board will supervise the exhumation and carry out the necessary medical examination to help determine the cause of death more accurately. The case has drawn public attention following questions raised by the deceased’s family over the circumstances surrounding Mir Ali Raza’s death and the quality of the initial forensic investigation. The court’s decision is expected to pave the way for an independent medical review, with the findings likely to play a significant role in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are now expected to begin the legal and administrative process required to carry out the exhumation under official supervision.

Man arrested after allegedly shooting himself to s…

A young man has been arrested in Kasur after allegedly shooting himself in the leg and staging a fake robbery in an attempt to avoid giving his salary to his family, according to police officials. The unusual incident has drawn attention due to the elaborate plan the suspect reportedly carried out to deceive both his relatives and law enforcement authorities. According to the police, the accused, identified as Adnan, had recently received his salary but did not want to hand over the money to his family as expected. Instead, he reportedly intended to use the money to purchase a new mobile phone. Fearing that his family would insist on receiving his earnings, he allegedly came up with a plan to fake a robbery in order to explain the disappearance of his salary. Police said that Adnan allegedly shot himself in the leg to make the fabricated robbery appear genuine. After sustaining the self-inflicted injury, he reportedly claimed that unidentified robbers had intercepted him, stolen his money, and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The incident initially appeared to be a case of armed robbery, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. However, as investigators examined the evidence and questioned the victim, inconsistencies began to emerge in his account of the incident. Police officers carefully reviewed the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery and collected forensic and testimonial evidence. Their investigation eventually led them to conclude that the robbery had never taken place and that the injury had been deliberately self-inflicted as part of a staged incident. During the course of the investigation, police also uncovered the alleged involvement of three of Adnan’s friends. According to officials, the three men are accused of providing him with the firearm that was used in the incident. As a result, they were also taken into custody and are being questioned regarding their role in helping carry out the alleged plan. Police stated that the suspects now face legal action for allegedly misleading law enforcement, staging a false crime, and illegally facilitating the use of a firearm. Authorities emphasized that fabricating criminal incidents wastes valuable police resources and diverts attention away from genuine emergencies and victims who require immediate assistance. The case has generated widespread discussion on social media, where many users expressed surprise at the lengths to which the accused allegedly went to avoid giving his salary to his family. Others noted that personal financial disputes should be resolved honestly rather than through actions that could endanger lives and lead to criminal charges. Law enforcement officials reiterated that filing false reports and creating fake crime scenes are serious offenses that can result in legal consequences. They urged the public to cooperate with authorities by providing truthful information and avoiding actions that interfere with criminal investigations. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are expected to complete the legal process after gathering all relevant evidence and recording statements from those involved. Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details about the charges that will be filed, but they confirmed that both the main suspect and his three friends remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Fuel price hikes spark transgender protest in Kara…

KARACHI: Frustration over soaring inflation and repeated fuel price hikes spilled onto the streets of Karachi on Wednesday as members of the transgender community staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club, urging the government to provide immediate relief from the rising cost of living. Holding placards and chanting slogans, protesters called for a reduction in petroleum prices and stricter measures to curb inflation, saying the financial burden had become unbearable for vulnerable communities already struggling with limited economic opportunities. The demonstrators said increasing prices of fuel and essential household items had significantly affected their ability to meet daily expenses. They argued that every increase in petroleum prices triggered higher transportation costs and pushed the prices of food, medicines and other necessities even further beyond the reach of low-income families. Addressing the gathering, Gender Interactive Alliance spokesperson Zehrish Somroo said the transgender community was facing severe financial hardship as inflation continued to erode incomes and reduce public support. “We have come out to protest because the rising cost of living is affecting everyone, including the transgender community,” she said. “Many of us depend on charity and public donations for survival. If inflation continues unchecked, even those sources of support are shrinking.” Somroo urged the government to take practical steps to reduce inflation, adding that the community had long struggled with limited access to education, employment and equal opportunities. Transgender rights activist Bindiya Rana said the demonstration was not intended to create conflict but to draw attention to the growing economic difficulties affecting ordinary citizens across Pakistan. Protesters said many families were being forced to make painful sacrifices to survive, including selling motorcycles, household belongings and even children’s jewellery to cover basic expenses. They warned that the rising cost of food, electricity, transport and healthcare had left countless households uncertain about how they would meet their daily needs. Participants appealed to policymakers to introduce urgent relief measures, including lowering fuel prices and stabilising the prices of essential commodities. They stressed that immediate action was needed to protect low-income and marginalised communities from further economic hardship. The protesters also issued a warning that if their demands were ignored, members of the transgender community from across Sindh would travel to Karachi to stage a larger province-wide demonstration, intensifying pressure on the government to address the worsening cost-of-living crisis.
