Why August 12 total solar eclipse is so special?

The last total solar eclipse occurred two years ago and once again millions of people will have the opportunity to witness this rare celestial event.

This year’s eclipse is particularly special because some observers will see the total solar eclipse at sunset making it an exceptionally rare and breathtaking sight.

According to NASA, the total solar eclipse will occur on August 12 but only a limited number of countries will experience totality. People in Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and a small part of Portugal will be able to witness the total eclipse.

In Spain, the eclipse will coincide with sunset creating a spectacular view that is expected to captivate skywatchers. A partial solar eclipse will also be visible across many other parts of Europe and Africa including most European countries and several regions of North Africa.

Russia will enjoy another rare phenomenon as a partial eclipse will be visible at both sunrise and sunset. On the remote Taymyr Peninsula, the partial eclipse will begin at sunrise while in another part of the country it will be seen at sunset.

Solar eclipses occurring at sunset are extremely rare which is one of the reasons why this year’s event is considered so unique.

According to Pakistan Standard Time (PST), the partial solar eclipse will begin at 10:34 PM, the total eclipse will start at 12:12 AM and the event will conclude at 2:58 AM.

McConnell out of hospital but not yet cleared to r…

US Senator Mitch McConnell has been discharged from hospital but is still not “medically cleared” to return to work in the Senate, his doctors have confirmed, as the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican continues intensive physical therapy following a fall and a mild case of pneumonia . “I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders,” McConnell said in a statement shared by his office on Monday . His office released a photo taken on July 26 showing McConnell smiling alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao . McConnell’s office did not provide a timeline for his return, and he remains at a rehabilitation center . The senator will not be able to attend an upcoming celebration in western Kentucky, the statement added . According to a statement from his medical team, McConnell has maintained “a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls” since his discharge from hospital care . The statement noted that “his bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility,” and that he is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office” . Since his admission to hospital in mid-June, there has been limited communication and detail from McConnell and his office about his condition, leading to widespread speculation about his absence in Washington and on social media . McConnell, who holds the title of the longest-serving Senate party leader in US history, has faced a number of health challenges in recent years, including previous falls and episodes of public freezing during press conferences . His extended absence comes at a critical time for Senate Republicans, with key legislative battles and leadership negotiations ongoing .

Israel launches second strike in Syria within a we…

DAMASCUS: Tensions in the region rose again after an Israeli drone strike near the Syrian capital Damascus injured several people, prompting Kuwait to strongly condemn the attack and call for international action to prevent further Israeli operations on Syrian territory. The strike reportedly targeted a civilian vehicle near a village southwest of Damascus. Several people were injured in the attack, according to reports, although the full extent of the casualties was not immediately clear. Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as repeated Israeli aggression against Syrian territory and urged the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to fulfil its responsibilities and work to stop further attacks. In a statement, the ministry said the targeting of a civilian vehicle had resulted in injuries among civilians. Kuwait called for an effective international response to what it described as continuing violations of Syria’s sovereignty. The incident is particularly significant because it marks the second Israeli attack in Syria within a week, raising concerns that the cycle of strikes could further aggravate tensions in an already volatile region. Israel, however, defended the latest operation. Israeli officials said the strike targeted what they described as “terrorists” and was carried out in response to an immediate threat faced by Israeli troops. The competing accounts highlight the broader security dispute surrounding Israel’s military operations in Syria. Israel has repeatedly said that its forces act to prevent threats from armed groups and to protect Israeli personnel and territory. Syrian and Arab officials, meanwhile, have frequently condemned such operations as violations of Syrian sovereignty. The latest strike comes at a time when the wider Middle East remains under intense pressure from overlapping conflicts and security crises. Any further escalation inside Syria could complicate efforts to maintain regional stability and increase diplomatic pressure on neighbouring countries. Kuwait’s appeal to the UN Security Council reflects growing calls from Arab states for greater international scrutiny of military operations on Syrian soil. The Kuwaiti ministry urged global powers to take concrete steps rather than allowing repeated attacks to continue unchecked. For residents near Damascus, the latest incident adds to concerns over the possibility of renewed violence. Although the immediate strike caused injuries rather than a large-scale loss of life, the frequency of military operations has raised fears that a wider confrontation could develop. With Israel maintaining that its actions are necessary for security and Arab governments calling for an end to attacks, Syria remains caught at the centre of a tense regional confrontation. The latest strike could therefore become another flashpoint in an increasingly fragile security environment.

  • The jaded gender talks

By Saman Aftab We are so habitual of listening to the gender inequality, women empowerment, and ever growing population talks that now these topics have become an essential subject for the matter of discussing societal issues. But what we people have lacked to unravel is the very essence of these debates. Why gender inequality exists? Why we are still lagging behind in terms of employing more women? Why we are unable to control the growing rate of population in our country? Before addressing the ‘absolutely unavoidable’ questions, let me take the readers down an irksome memory lane of my life. Last year when our maid broke the news of her pregnancy to us, our most obvious question was why now? Considering her age which was 42 years that time and her financial grim along with unsupportive role of her husband in bearing the burden of their five children, this question clicked in every mind. And her answer though not surprising was quite gloomy for the existence of every female in this world; “baji, larka chahye humen” (we need a boy). She had four daughters and a deaf son. Her statement broke my heart because it questioned the capabilities of her daughters who were all physically and mentally sound. This memory was not worth forgetting because as a female it made me feel inferior. But this Babygirl vs Babyboy thing is not new, in fact it is one of the most deeply rooted concerns of our society. The normalcy of demanding the birth of a boy from a married woman is consolidating with the passage of time. The worst part of this matter – it’s getting acceptance. Ironically, majority of mothers in law showcase such demands to the newly married couple, as if it is in their hands to ‘design’ the genetic make-up of their offspring. The heart wrenching memory got afresh, when Tabassum shared her so called good news with us. Tabassum, 35 years old woman who works as a maid in three houses, a mother of four girls is expecting again for the sake of receiving a son this time. Her good news reminded me of her last fourth delivery when she gave birth to a girl in government hospital and she was made to give her daughter to a rich family on the persuasion of her drug addict husband. Whether they got money in return was dubious but chances of such happening were bright. I really hope and pray that this time she gets a son, otherwise the couple will continue to bring unwanted girls in this world and ruin their lives. For all the existing daughters of this couple are living a dark and disowned life. This brutal reality of life is not constrained to lower class people and it has crossed the demarcation of social groupings based on all classes, religions and races. Let us take an example of my sister’s friend, who is married to a well-established businessman and living in a posh locality. The poor lady who has a rich family, is a mother of two cute little girls. Although the little girls born to riches are living a good life, their mother is undergoing severe mental anxiety and pressure for not having a son. And of course, she for the sake of getting rid of such pressure is planning to have another baby neglecting her present deteriorating health condition. Unfortunately, the instances are innumerable and the rate of their occurrences is increasing day by day. Why boy child is mostly preferred over girl child? The answer lies in the heart of several burdens tied with bringing up a girl till her marriage. Among so many liabilities, the extra protection needed by the girls in our society and the curse of dowry have aggravated the scenario to such an extent that today girls are seen as “misfortune”. Of course exceptions are always there. Let us shift the focus from this melancholy to addressing those “absolutely unavoidable” questions raised earlier. 1: Gender inequality; Homo sapiens (humans) are generally categorized into three groups namely man, woman and transgender. Men are always ranked superior for enormous reasons but if we see things more pragmatically, it becomes evident that parents are left with sons in their old age while their daughters somehow abandon them and serve in laws for the rest of their lives. Call it our family system, it is the way it is. Then how can girls be loved or demanded? For voicing rights for equality, women should also bear the responsibilities equally. If a woman is capable of doing an employment being educated or skilled, she must pursue it for sake of giving all the best of resources to her parents that are expected of a son. The root cause of inequality among genders is the leverage given to men of being more useful and thus more needed. As long as the share of women in the society is constrained only to domestic chores and family caretaking, this inequality will never fade away. More women should be encouraged to become financially sufficient and independent. But how? This leads to our second question. 2: Women empowerment; there should be more campaigning with regards to educating girls and investing in their skill building. More powerful the educational background of a woman is, more will be the chances of her getting a good job for the sake of financial security. Thus, the number of women working for the betterment of society and raising capital will rise exponentially. And finally once these two milestones are achieved, the third ordeal of our country will evade automatically. 3: Overpopulation: as discussed in the start, demand and desire for the birth of a son has contributed a lot more towards overpopulation. Men are expected to take care of their parents but the same goes for women also. And in this age of compatibility, women should come forward and play a vital part in developing this society. Instead of placing all the

Romania expands brown bear cull as critics highlight enforcement gaps

Romania’s parliament has voted to double the annual hunting quota for brown bears to nearly 900 animals in an effort to manage Europe’s largest population outside Russia, which is estimated at between 10,000 and 13,000. The legislation aims to curb an increasing frequency of human-bear encounters driven by urban sprawl, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. Human deaths caused by bear attacks in Romania have reached nearly 30 over the past two decades, with animals regularly entering mountain towns to scavenge for food. Conservationists and wildlife experts argue the expanded culling quota will fail to solve urban encroachment because trophy hunters target large animals deep within forests. Critics maintain that existing safety measures, including fines for tourists feeding wildlife, subsidised electric fencing, and proper municipal waste management, are not being sufficiently enforced. In addition to state-sanctioned culls, local municipal authorities retain legal powers granted in 2021 to shoot individual bears that intrude directly into private residential properties.

West nile virus cases rise in Israel as two people…

A mosquito-borne disease has resurfaced in Israel, with 13 people reportedly diagnosed with West Nile fever this year and two deaths recorded. According to reports, Israel’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in several areas where cases have been identified. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the Menashe Regional Council, Ramat Hasharon and Eilat. Health officials explained that West Nile virus is generally transmitted through mosquitoes that become infected after feeding on birds carrying the virus. The infected mosquitoes can subsequently transmit the virus to humans through bites. Professor Sigal Sadeski, head of the Public Health Division, said that West Nile fever is mild in most cases and many infected people may not develop noticeable symptoms. However, the infection can become serious in some patients. Health experts warn that the virus can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. The risk of severe illness is reportedly higher among people over the age of 60 and those who already have underlying health conditions. Investigation Underway Israeli authorities have launched epidemiological investigations to determine how and where the affected individuals were exposed to infected mosquitoes. Officials are also examining whether cases reported in different locations are connected and are attempting to identify areas where infected mosquitoes may have come into contact with people. The discovery of infected mosquitoes has also increased the importance of mosquito surveillance and control measures in the affected areas. Environmental authorities are expected to monitor mosquito populations and take steps aimed at reducing the risk of further transmission. Previous Outbreak in 2024 Israel also experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus in 2024. According to an Israeli report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health, 916 human cases had been confirmed by September 2024, with 71 deaths reported. The latest cases have renewed concerns about the seasonal spread of West Nile virus and the potential risks posed by infected mosquitoes. While most infections are mild or may cause no obvious symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur in a small proportion of patients. Health authorities are therefore continuing surveillance and investigating the latest infections to better understand the spread of the virus. The current outbreak highlights the importance of mosquito-control measures, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring affected areas and investigating possible sources of transmission.
